On the values taken by slice torus invariants

We study the space of slice-torus invariants. In particular we characterize the set of values that slice-torus invariants may take on a given knot in terms of the stable smooth slice genus. Our study reveals that the resolution of the local Thom conjecture implies the existence of slice torus invariants without having to appeal to any explicit construction from a knot homology theory.

Almost positive links are strongly quasipositive

We prove that any link admitting a diagram with a single negative crossing is strongly quasipositive. This answers a question of Stoimenow's in the (strong) positive. As a second main result, we give simple and complete characterizations of link diagrams with quasipositive canonical surface (the surface produced by Seifert's algorithm). As applications, we determine which prime knots up to 13 crossings are strongly quasipositive, and we confirm the following conjecture for knots that have a canonical surface realizing their genus: a knot is strongly quasipositive if and only if the Bennequin inequality is an equality.

Average four-genus of two-bridge knots

We prove that the expected value of the ratio between the smooth four-genus and the Seifert genus of two-bridge knots tends to zero as the crossing number tends to infinity.

Untwisting 3-strand torus knots

We prove that the signature bound for the topological 4-genus of 3-strand torus knots is sharp, using McCoy's twisting method. We also show that the bound is off by at most 1 for 4-strand and 6-strand torus knots, and improve the upper bound on the asymptotic ratio between the topological 4-genus and the Seifert genus of torus knots from 2/3 to 14/27.

Homotopy ribbon concordance, Blanchfield pairings, and twisted Alexander polynomials

We establish homotopy ribbon concordance obstructions coming from the Blanchfield form and Levine-Tristram signatures. Then, as an application of twisted Alexander polynomials, we show that for every knot K with nontrivial Alexander polynomial, there exists an infinite family of knots that are all concordant to K and have the same Blanchfield form as K, such that no pair of knots in that family is homotopy ribbon concordant.

Upsilon-like concordance invariants from sl(n) knot cohomology

We construct smooth concordance invariants of knots which take the form of piecewise linear maps from [0,1] to R, one for each n greater than or equal to 2. These invariants arise from sl(n) knot cohomology. We verify some properties which are analogous to those of the invariant Upsilon (which arises from knot Floer homology), and some which differ. We make some explicit computations and give some topological applications. Further to this, we define a concordance invariant from equivariant sl(n) knot cohomology which subsumes many known concordance invariants arising from quantum knot cohomologies.

Khovanov width and dealternation number of positive braid links

We give asymptotically sharp upper bounds for the Khovanov width and the dealternation number of positive braid links, in terms of their crossing number. The same braid-theoretic technique, combined with Ozsváth, Stipsicz, and Szabó's Upsilon invariant, allows us to determine the exact cobordism distance between torus knots with braid index two and six.

Checkerboard graph monodromies

We associate an open book with any connected plane checkerboard graph, thus providing a common extension of the classes of prime positive braid links and positive tree-like Hopf plumbings. As an application, we prove that the link type of a prime positive braid closure is determined by the linking graph associated with that braid.

On classical upper bounds for slice genera

We introduce a new link invariant called the algebraic genus, which gives an upper bound for the topological slice genus of links. In fact, the algebraic genus is an upper bound for another version of the slice genus proposed here: the minimal genus of a surface in the four-ball whose complement has infinite cyclic fundamental group. We characterize the algebraic genus in terms of cobordisms in three-space, and explore the connections to other knot invariants related to the Seifert form, the Blanchfield form, knot genera and unknotting. Employing Casson-Gordon invariants, we discuss the algebraic genus as a candidate for the optimal upper bound for the topological slice genus that is determined by the S-equivalence class of Seifert matrices.

On the topological 4-genus of torus knots

We prove that the topological locally flat slice genus of large torus knots takes up less than three quarters of the ordinary genus. As an application, we derive the best possible linear estimate of the topological slice genus for torus knots with non-maximal signature invariant.

New Quantum Obstructions to Sliceness

It is well-known that generic perturbations of the complex Frobenius algebra used to define Khovanov cohomology each give rise to Rasmussen's concordance invariant s. This gives a concordance homomorphism to the integers and a strong lower bound on the smooth slice genus of a knot. Similar behavior has been observed in sl(n) Khovanov-Rozansky cohomology, where a perturbation gives rise to the concordance homomorphisms s_n for each n >= 2, and where we have s_2 = s. We demonstrate that s_n for n >= 3 does not in fact arise generically, and that varying the chosen perturbation gives rise both to new concordance homomorphisms as well as to new sliceness obstructions that are not equivalent to concordance homomorphisms.

Rasmussen's spectral sequences and the sl(N)-concordance invariants

Combining known spectral sequences with a new spectral sequence relating reduced and unreduced sl(N)-homology yields a relationship between the Homflypt-homology of a knot and its sl(N)-concordance invariants. As an application, some of the sl(N)-concordance invariants are shown to be linearly independent.

On stable sl3-homology of torus knots

The stable Khovanov-Rozansky homology of torus knots has been conjecturally described as the Koszul homology of an explicit non-regular sequence of polynomials. We verify this conjecture against newly available computational data for sl(3)-homology. Special attention is paid to torsion. In addition, explicit conjectural formulae are given for the sl(N)-homology of (3,m)-torus knots for all N and m, which are motivated by higher categorified Jones-Wenzl projectors. Structurally similar formulae are proven for Heegard-Floer homology.

sl3-foam homology calculations

We exhibit a certain infinite family of three-stranded quasi-alternating pretzel knots which are counterexamples to Lobb's conjecture that the sl_3-knot concordance invariant s_3 (suitably normalised) should be equal to the Rasmussen invariant s_2. For this family, |s_3| < |s_2|. However, we also find other knots for which |s_3| > |s_2|. The main tool is an implementation of Morrison and Nieh's algorithm to calculate Khovanov's sl_3-foam link homology. Our C++-program is fast enough to calculate the integral homology of e.g. the (6,5)-torus knot in six minutes. Furthermore, we propose a potential improvement of the algorithm by gluing sub-tangles in a more flexible way.
