Magnetization process and magnetocaloric effect in geometrically frustrated Ising antiferromagnet and spin ice models on a `Star of David' nanocluster

Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetic Ising (IA) and ferromagnetic spin ice (SI) models on a nanocluster with a `Star of David' topology, including next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interactions, are studied by an exact enumeration. In an external field applied in characteristic directions of the respective models, depending on the NNN interaction sign and magnitude, the ground state magnetization of the IA model is found to display up to three intermediate plateaus at fractional values of the saturation magnetization, while the SI model shows only one zero-magnetization plateau and only for the antiferromagnetic NNN coupling. A giant magnetocaloric effect is revealed in the the IA model with the NNN interaction either absent or equal to the nearest-neighbor coupling. The latter is characterized by abrupt isothermal entropy changes at low temperatures and infinitely fast adiabatic temperature variations for specific entropy values in the processes when the magnetic field either vanishes or tends to the critical values related to the magnetization jumps.

Magnetization curves of geometrically frustrated exchange-biased FM/AFM bilayers

We consider a ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic bilayer on a triangular lattice in the framework of the planar Heisenberg model. The impact of the geometrical frustration in this system on the magnetization curves and the exchange bias phenomenon is studied. The magnetization curves and the phase diagram for such systems are obtained. We observe horizontal plateaus and a split of the hysteresis loop on the magnetization curves. It is shown that the shift of the hysteresis loop (exchange bias) occurs for the systems with a magnetically hard antiferromagnet.

Exact Diagonalization Study of an Extended Hubbard Model for a Cubic Cluster at Quarter Filling

In the paper the thermodynamics of a cubic cluster with 8 sites at quarter filling is characterized by means of exact diagonalization technique. Particular emphasis is put on the behaviour of such response functions as specific heat and magnetic susceptibility. The system is modelled with extended Hubbard model which includes electron hopping between both first and second nearest neighbours as well as coulombic interactions, both on-site and between nearest-neighbour sites. The importance of hopping between second nearest neighbours and coulombic interactions between nearest neighbours for the temperature dependences of thermodynamic response functions is analysed. In particular, the predictions of Schottky model are compared with the calculations based on the full energy spectrum.

Theoretical Study of the Frustrated Ising Antiferromagnet on the Honeycomb Lattice

We study effects of the next-next-nearest-neighbour antiferromagnetic ($J_3 < 0$) interaction on critical properties (or phase diagram) of the frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $J_1-J_2-J_3$ Ising antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice by using the effective-field theory with correlations. Beside the ground-state energy, we find that there is a region of $J_3 < 0$ in which the frustrated honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet exhibits a tricritical point, at which the phase transition changes from the second order to the first one on the line between Néel antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases.

Tricritical behaviour of the frustrated Ising antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice

We use the effective-field theory with correlations based on different cluster sizes to investigate phase diagrams of the frustrated Ising antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice with isotropic interactions of the strength $J_1 < 0$ between nearest-neighbour pairs and $J_2 < 0$ between next-nearest neighbour pairs of spins. We present results for the ground-state energy as a function of the frustration parameter $R = J_2 /|J_1|$. We find that the cluster-size has a considerable effect on the existence and location of a tricritical point in the phase diagram at which the phase transition changes from the second order to the first one.

Tricritical Properties of Antiferromagnetic Ising Model on the Square Lattice

The Ising square lattice model with nearest-neighbor (nn) interactions ($J_1$) is one of the few exactly solvable models [1]. Adding next-neareast- neighbor (nnn) interactions ($J_2$) or a magnetic field (or both) leads to the non solvability of the model and only some approximate solutions are possible. In this brief report we will review some results obtained within effective field theory. We will show that besides second-order transitions there are also lines of first-order transitions and the coordinates of tricritical points are calculated.

Critical behavior of a triangular lattice Ising AF/FM bilayer

We study a bilayer Ising spin system consisting of antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) triangular planes, coupled by ferromagnetic exchange interaction, by standard Monte Carlo and parallel tempering methods. The AF/FM bilayer is found to display the critical behavior completely different from both the single FM and AF constituents as well as the FM/FM and AF/AF bilayers. Namely, by finite-size scaling (FSS) analysis we identify at the same temperature a standard Ising transition from the paramagnetic to FM state in the FM plane that induces a ferrimagnetic state with a finite net magnetic moment in the AF plane. At lower temperatures there is another phase transition, that takes place only in the AF plane, to different ferrimagnetic state with spins on two sublattices pointing parallel and on one sublattice antiparallel to the spins on the FM plane. FSS indicates that the corresponding critical exponents are close to the two-dimensional three-state ferromagnetic Potts model values.

Frustrated mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising ferrimagnets on a triangular lattice

Mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising ferrimagnets on a triangular lattice with sublattices A, B and C are studied for two spin value distributions $(S_{\rm A},S_{\rm B},S_{\rm C})=(1/2,1/2,1)$ and $(1/2,1,1)$ by Monte Carlo simulations. The non-bipartite character of the lattice induces geometrical frustration in both systems, which leads to the critical behavior rather different from their ferromagnetic counterparts. We confirm second-order phase transitions belonging to the standard Ising universality class occurring at higher temperatures, however, in both models these change at tricritical points (TCP) to first-order transitions at lower temperatures. In the model $(1/2,1/2,1)$, TCP occurs on the boundary between paramagnetic and ferrimagnetic $(\pm 1/2,\pm 1/2,\mp 1)$ phases. The boundary between two ferrimagnetic phases $(\pm 1/2,\pm 1/2,\mp 1)$ and $(\pm 1/2,\mp 1/2,0)$ at lower temperatures is always first order and it is joined by a line of second-order phase transitions between the paramagnetic and the ferrimagnetic $(\pm 1/2,\mp 1/2,0)$ phases at a critical endpoint. The tricritical behavior is also confirmed in the model $(1/2,1,1)$ on the boundary between the paramagnetic and ferrimagnetic $(0,\pm 1,\mp 1)$ phases.

Short-range correlations in modified planar rotator model

We introduce a model inspired from statistical physics that is shown to display flexible short-range spatial correlations which are potentially useful in geostatistical modeling. In particular, we consider a suitably modified planar rotator or XY model, traditionally used for modeling continuous spin systems in magnetism, and we demonstrate that it can capture spatial correlations typically present in geostatistical data. The empirical study of the spin configurations produced by Monte Carlo simulations at various temperatures and stages in the nonequilibrium regime shows that their spatial variability can be modeled by the flexible class of Matérn covariance functions. The correlation range and the smoothness of these functions vary significantly in the parameter space that consists of the temperature and the simulation time. We briefly discuss the potential of the model for efficient and automatic prediction of spatial data with short-range correlations, such as commonly encountered in geophysical and environmental applications.

Phase transitions in a frustrated Ising antiferromagnet on a square lattice

The phase transitions occurring in the frustrated Ising square antiferromagnet with first- ($J_1 < 0$) and second- ($J_2 < 0$) nearest-neighbor interactions are studied within the framework of the effective-field theory with correlations based on the different cluster sizes and for a wide range of $R = J_2/|J_1|$. Despite the simplicity of the model, it has proved difficult to precisely determine the order of the phase transitions. In contrast to the previous effective-field study, we have found a first-order transition line in the region close to $R = -0.5$ not only between the superantiferromagnetic and paramagnetic ($R<-0.5$) but also between antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic ($R>-0.5$) phases.

Thermodynamic description of the Ising antiferromagnet on triangular lattice with selective dilution by modified Pair Approximation method

The Pair Approximation method is modified in order to describe the systems with geometrical frustration. The Ising antiferromagnet on triangular lattice with selective dilution (Kaya-Berker model) is considered and a self-consistent thermodynamic description of this model is obtained. For this purpose, the Gibbs free-energy as a function of temperature, concentration of magnetic atoms on the selected sublattice, and external magnetic field is derived. In particular, the phase diagram is constructed and a comparison of different methods is presented. The thermodynamic quantities are discussed in the context of their physical validity and the improvement in the description introduced by modified method is emphasized.

Phase boundaries of a spin-3/2 Blume-Emery-Griffiths model on a honeycomb lattice

The spin-3/2 Blume-Emery-Griffiths model on a honeycomb lattice is studied by Monte Carlo simulations with the goal to determine phase diagrams for a range of the model parameters and to investigate the nature of the phase transitions between the respective phases. For positive values of the biquadratic to bilinear interaction ratio $α$, we find two ferromagnetically ordered phases, F1 and F2, with the sublattice magnetizations (1/2,1/2) and (3/2,3/2), respectively, and our results confirm the discontinuous character of the order-disorder critical line as a function of the single-ion anisotropy strength, predicted by the effective-field theory (EFT). For negative values of $α$, there is another ferrimagnetic (FRM) phase of the type (1/2,3/2), located between F1 and F2. However, the step-like variation of the order-disorder critical frontier obtained from EFT for large negative $α$ is not reproduced and thus deemed artifact of the EFT approximation. Finite-size scaling analysis performed at various points between the respective identified phases gave the ratio of critical exponents $γ/ν$ consistent with the 2D Ising universality class, except in the vicinity of the boundary intersection, where the results deviated from the standard values beyond the measurement errors.

Entropy of spin clusters with frustrated geometry

Geometrically frustrated clusters of Ising spins of different shapes on a triangular lattice are studied by exact enumeration and Monte Carlo simulation. The focus is laid on the ground-state energy and residual entropy behaviors as functions of the cluster shape and size, as well as the spin value. Depending on the cluster shape, the residual entropy density on approach to the thermodynamic limit can either vanish or remain finite and the dependence can be decreasing, increasing or non-monotonic. Nevertheless, the relative entropies normalized by the respective thermodynamic limit values turn out to be little sensitive to the spin value. Some interesting finite-temperature properties of the clusters are also discussed and attention is drawn to their magnetocaloric properties.

Magnetocaloric properties of a frustrated Blume-Capel antiferromagnet

Low-temperature magnetization processes and magnetocaloric properties of a geometrically frustrated spin-1 Blume-Capel model on a triangular lattice are studied by Monte Carlo simulations. The model is found to display qualitatively different behavior depending on the sign of the single-ion anisotropy D. For positive values of D we observe two magnetization plateaus, similar to the spin-1/2 Ising antiferromagnet, and negative isothermal entropy changes for any field intensity. For a range of small negative values of D there are four magnetization plateaus and the entropy changes can be either negative or positive, depending on the field. If D is negative but large in absolute value then the entropy changes are solely positive.

Thermodynamic properties of a diluted triangular Ising antiferromagnet in a field

Within the framework of the effective-field theory with correlations we investigate effects of an external magnetic field and random site dilution on basic thermodynamic quantities, such as the magnetization and the magnetic susceptibility, of the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet. Behavior of these quantities is presented in the temperaturefield parameter space for selected mild degrees of dilution. It is found that, besides the anomalies associated with phase transitions from the ferrimagnetic to the paramagnetic state, in some regions of the parameter space these functions display some more anomalies and peculiarities, as a result of joint effects of the geometrical frustration, magnetic dilution, thermal fluctuations and the applied magnetic field.

Domain dynamics in nonequilibrium random-field Ising models

We employ Monte Carlo simulations in order to study dynamics of the magnetization and domain growth processes in the random-field Ising models with uniform and Gaussian random field distributions of varying strengths. Domain sizes are determined directly using the Hoshen-Kopelman algorithm. For either case, both the magnetization and the largest domain growth dynamics are found to follow the power law with generally different exponents, which exponentially decay with the random field strength. Moreover, for relatively small random fields the relaxation is confirmed to comply with different regimes at early and later times. No significant differences were found between the results for the uniform and Gaussian distributions, in accordance with the universality assumption.

Low-Temperature Properties of Ising Antiferromagnet on a Stacked Triangular Lattice

An Ising antiferromagnet on a stacked triangular lattice in zero field is studied by Monte Carlo simulations, focusing on the character of the low-temperature phase and the effect of the relative strength of the exchange interaction in the stacking direction α. Our results support the presence of the 3D Wannier phase, with the sublattice magnetization structure (m, -m, 0) and power-law decaying m with the lattice size. The extent of this low-temperature phase shrinks with decreasing α, however, it appears even at very low values if it is accessed from higher temperatures by sufficiently slow cooling.

In the paper the Curie temperatures of selectively diluted planar Ising ferromagnet on the triangular lattice are calculated vs. concentration of magnetic atoms. Various analytical approaches are compared with the exact numerical calculations for finite clusters, as well as with the exact analytical solutions for the triangular and honeycomb lattices.
