Environmental Time Series Interpolation Based on Spartan Random Processes

In many environmental applications, time series are either incomplete or irregularly spaced. We investigate the application of the Spartan random process to missing data prediction. We employ a novel modified method of moments (MMoM) for parameter inference. The CPU time of MMoM is shown to be much faster than that of maximum likelihood estimation and almost independent of the data size. We formulate an explicit Spartan interpolator for estimating missing data. The model validation is performed on both synthetic data and real time series of atmospheric aerosol concentrations. The prediction performance is shown to be comparable with that attained by the best linear unbiased (Kolmogorov-Wiener) predictor at reduced computational cost.

Residual entropy of spin-s triangular Ising antiferromagnet

We employ a thermodynamic integration method (TIM) to establish the values of the residual entropy for the geometrically frustrated spin-s triangular Ising antiferromagnet, with the spin values s = 1/2, 1, 3/2, 2 and 5/2. The case of s = 1/2, for which the exact value is known, is used to assess the TIM performance. We also obtain an analytical formula for the lower bound in a general spin-s model and conjecture that it should reasonably approximate the true residual entropy for sufficiently large $s$. Implications of the present results in relation to reliability of the TIM as an indirect method for calculating global thermodynamic quantities, such as the free energy and the entropy, in similar systems involving frustration and/or higher spin values by standard Monte Carlo sampling are briefly discussed.

Monte Carlo simulation of the three-dimensional XY model with bilinear-biquadratic exchange interaction

The three-dimensional XY model with bilinear-biquadratic exchange interactions $J$ and $J'$, respectively, has been studied by Monte Carlo simulations. From the detailed analysis of the thermal variation of various physical quantities, as well as the order parameter and energy histogram analysis, the phase diagram including two different ordered phases has been determined. There is a single phase boundary from a paramagnetic to a dipole-quadrupole ordered phase, which is of second order in a high $J/J'$ ratio region, changing to a first-order one for $0.35 \leq J/J' \leq 0.5$. Below $J/J'=0.35$ there are two separate transitions: the first one to the quadrupole long-range order (QLRO) phase at higher temperatures, followed by another one to the dipole-quadrupole long-range order (DLRO) phase at lower temperatures. The finite-size scaling analysis yields values of the critical exponents for both the DLRO and QLRO transitions close to the values for the conventional XY model which includes no biquadratic exchange.

Monte Carlo investigation of the tricritical point stability in a three-dimensional Ising metamagnet

We use Monte Carlo simulations to study multicritical properties of an Ising metamagnet in an external field. According to the mean field theory predictions, a three-dimensional layered metamagnet is expected to display a tricritical point decomposition to a critical endpoint and a bicritical endpoint, when a ratio between intralayer ferromagnetic and interlayer antiferromagnetic couplings becomes sufficiently small. Our simulations show no evidence of such a decomposition and produce a tricritical behaviour even for a coupling ratio as small as R=0.01.

Histogram Monte Carlo Simulation of the Geometrically Frustrated XY Antiferromagnet with Biquadratic Exchange

Histogram Monte Carlo simulation is used to investigate effects of biquadratic exchange $J_{2}$ on phase transitions of a 3D classical XY antiferromagnet with frustration induced by the antiferromagnetic exchange $J_{1}$ and the stacked triangular lattice geometry. The biquadratic exchange is considered negative (antiferroquadrupolar) within the triangular planes and positive (ferroquadrupolar) between the planes. The phase diagram obtained features a variety of interesting phenomena arising from the presence of both the biquadratic exchange and frustration. In a strong biquadratic exchange limit ($|J_{1}|/|J_{2}| \leq 0.25$), the antiferroquadrupolar phase transition which is of second order is followed by the antiferromagnetic one which can be either first or second order. The separate antiferroquadrupolar and antiferromagnetic second-order transitions are found to belong to the chiral XY and Ising universality classes, respectively. If the biquadratic exchange is reduced both transitions are found to be first order and occur simultaneously in a wide region of $|J_{1}|/|J_{2}|$. However, if $|J_{2}| \rightarrow 0$ the transition changes to the second-order one with the chiral universality class critical behavior.

Effect of biquadratic exchange on phase transitions of a planar classical Heisenberg ferromagnet

Effect of biquadratic exchange on phase transitions of a planar classical Heisenberg (or XY) ferromagnet on a stacked triangular lattice is investigated by Standard Monte Carlo and Histogram Monte Carlo simulations in the region of a bilinear to biquadratic exchange interaction ratio $J_{1}/J_{2} \leq 1$. The biquadratic exchange is found to cause separate second-order phase transitions in a strong biquadratic exchange limit, followed by simultaneous dipole and quadrupole ordering, which is of first order for an intermediate range of the exchange ratio and changes to a second-order one again as $J_{1}/J_{2}$ is further increased. Thus, a phase diagram featuring both triple and tricritical points is obtained. Furthermore, a finite-size scaling analysis is used to calculate the critical indices for both dipole and quadrupole kinds of ordering.

Chiral universality class behavior of a non-chiral antiferroquadrupole system

The planar Heisenberg system with antiferroquadrupolar exchange on 3D stacked triangular lattice is shown to belong to the new "chiral" universality class, predicted for chiral antiferromagnets. The present system, however, displays no such chirality, which, according to the currently widely accepted concept, is supposed to be a key ingredient for the new critical behavior. Our claim that the new universality class should not be limited only to the chiral antiferromagnets is based on a simple mapping between the chiral antiferromagnetic and antiferroquadrupolar systems and supported by actual calculations of the transition temperatures and critical indices from finite-size scaling analysis of data issued from Histogram Monte Carlo simulations. In order to demonstrate the existence of two different universality classes in the behavior of quadrupolar systems, the finite-size scaling is also performed for the system with ferroquadrupolar exchange, which, in contrast to the antiferroquadrupolar exchange system case, produced standard critical behavior, as could also be anticipated from the mapping.

Critical and compensation phenomena in a mixed-spin ternary alloy: a Monte Carlo study

By means of standard and histogram Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the critical and compensation behaviour of a ternary mixed spin alloy of the type $AB_pC_{1-p}$ on a cubic lattice. We focus on the case with the parameters corresponding to the Prussian blue analog $({\rm Ni}^{\rm II}_p {\rm Mn}^{\rm II}_{1-p})_{1.5}[{\rm Cr^{III}(CN)}_6] \cdot n {\rm H_2O}$ and confront our findings with those obtained by some approximative approaches and the experiments.

Effects of selective dilution on phase diagram and ground-state magnetizations of an Ising antiferromagnet on triangular and honeycomb lattices

We employ an effective-field theory with correlations in order to study the phase diagram and ground-state magnetizations of a selectively diluted Ising antiferromagnet on triangular and honeycomb lattices. Dilution of different sublattices with generally unequal probabilities results in a rather intricate phase diagram in the sublattice dilution parameters space. In the case of the frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet the selective dilution affects the degree of frustration which can lead to some peculiar phenomena, such as reentrant behavior of long-range order or unsaturated sublattice magnetizations at zero temperature. The selectively diluted Ising antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice is obtained as a special case when one sublattice of the triangular lattice is completely removed by dilution.

Phase diagram of a mixed spin-1 and spin-3/2 Ising ferrimagnet

Critical and compensation properties of a mixed spin-1 and spin-3/2 Ising ferrimagnet on a square lattice are investigated by standard and histogram Monte Carlo simulations. The critical temperature is studied as a function of a single-ion anisotropy strength. The second order of the phase transition is established by finite-size scaling for the entire boundary. Some previously obtained results, such as a tricritical point, predicted by the mean field theory (MFT) and effective field theory (EFT), or a first-order transition line separating two different ordered phases, obtained by the cluster variational theory (CVT), are deemed artifacts of the respective approximations. So is a reentrant phenomenon produced by CVT. Nevertheless, the multicompensation behavior predicted by MFT and EFT was confirmed.

Critical and tricritical behavior of a selectively diluted triangular Ising antiferromagnet in a field

We study a geometrically frustrated triangular Ising antiferromagnet in an external magnetic field which is selectively diluted with nonmagnetic impurities employing an effective-field theory with correlations and Monte Carlo simulations. We focus on the frustration-relieving effects of such a selective dilution on the phase diagram and find that it can lead to rather intricate phase diagrams in the dilution-field parameters space. In particular, in a highly (weakly) diluted system the frustration is greatly (little) relieved and such a system is found to display only the second(first)-order phase transitions at any field. On the other hand, for a wide interval of intermediate dilution values the transition remains second order at low fields but it changes to first order at higher fields and the system displays a tricritical behavior. The existence of the first-order transition in the region of intermediate dilution and high fields is verified by Monte Carlo simulations.

Phase Diagram of a Diluted Triangular Lattice Ising Antiferromagnet in a Field

Magnetization processes and phase transitions in a geometrically frustrated triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet in the presence of an external magnetic field and a random site dilution are studied by the use of an effective-field theory with correlations. We find that the interplay between the applied field and the frustration-relieving dilution results in peculiar phase diagrams in the temperature-field-dilution parameter space.

Low-temperature metastable states in a stacked triangular Ising antiferromagnet

We study low-temperature magnetization processes in a stacked triangular Ising antiferromagnet by Monte Carlo simulations. In increasing and decreasing magnetic fields we observe multiple steps and hysteresis corresponding to formation of different metastable states. Besides the equidistant threefold splitting of the 1/3 ferrimagnetic plateau, we additionally confirm a fourth plateau in the field-increasing branch and a sizable remanence when the field is decreased to zero. The newly observed plateau only appears at sufficiently low temperature and sufficiently large exchange interaction in the stacking direction. These observations reasonably reproduce low-temperatures measurements on the spin-chain compound $\rm{Ca}_3\rm{Co}_2\rm{O}_6$.

Ground states of the frustrated Blume-Emery-Griffiths model in a field

Ground-state properties of the Blume-Emery-Griffiths model with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions on a triangular lattice are investigated in the presence of an external magnetic field. In particular, we explore the model's parameter space and identify regions with different degenerate ground states that may give rise to different magnetic phases also at finite temperatures. We demonstrate the presence of such phases by Monte Carlo simulations of magnetization processes for selected values of parameters.

Phase transitions in a triangular Blume-Capel antiferromagnet

We study the critical behavior of a frustrated Blume-Capel (BC) antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice by Monte Carlo simulations. For a reduced single-ion anisotropy strength $-1.47 \lesssim d < 0$ we find two phase transitions. The low-temperature phase is characterized by the antiferromagnetic long-range ordering (LRO) on two sublattices with the third one remaining in a non-magnetic state. At higher temperatures there is a critical region of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type with a power-law decaying spin-correlation function. For $-1.5 \le d \lesssim -1.47$, there is only one phase transition from the LRO to the paramagnetic region and the transition is of first order. The presence of the BKT phase in the current frustrated BC model is a new feature not observed in its non-frustrated counterparts. The values of the decay exponent $η$ of the BKT phase corresponding to upper and lower temperatures appear to be consistent with the theoretical predictions for the six-state clock model.
