Recursion operators and bi-Hamiltonian representations of cubic evolutionary (2+1)-dimensional systems

We construct all (2+1)-dimensional PDEs depending only on 2nd-order derivatives of unknown which have the Euler-Lagrange form and determine the corresponding Lagrangians. We convert these equations and their Lagrangians to two-component forms and find Hamiltonian representations of all these systems using Dirac's theory of constraints. We consider three-parameter integrable equations that are cubic in partial derivatives of the unknown applying our method of skew factorization of the symmetry condition. Lax pairs and recursion relations for symmetries are determined both for one-component and two-component forms. For cubic three-parameter equations in the two-component form we obtain recursion operators in $2\times 2$ matrix form and bi-Hamiltonian representations, thus discovering three new bi-Hamiltonian (2+1) systems.

Lax pairs, recursion operators and bi-Hamiltonian representations of (3+1)-dimensional Hirota type equations

We consider (3+1)-dimensional second-order evolutionary PDEs where the unknown $u$ enters only in the form of the 2nd-order partial derivatives. For such equations which possess a Lagrangian, we show that all of them have a symplectic Monge--Ampère form and determine their Lagrangians. We develop a calculus for transforming the symmetry condition to a "skew-factorized" form from which we immediately extract Lax pairs and recursion relations for symmetries, thus showing that all such equations are integrable in the traditional sense. We convert these equations together with their Lagrangians to a two-component form and obtain recursion operators in a $2\times 2$ matrix form. We transform our equations from Lagrangian to Hamiltonian form by using the Dirac's theory of constraints. Composing recursion operators with the Hamiltonian operators we obtain the second Hamiltonian form of our systems, thus showing that they are bi-Hamiltonian systems integrable in the sense of Magri. By this approach, we obtain five new bi-Hamiltonian multi-parameter systems in (3+1) dimensions.

Recursion operators and bi-Hamiltonian structure of the general heavenly equation

We discover two additional Lax pairs and three nonlocal recursion operators for symmetries of the general heavenly equation introduced by Doubrov and Ferapontov. Converting the equation to a two-component form, we obtain Lagrangian and Hamiltonian structures of the two-component general heavenly system. We study all point symmetries of the two-component system and, using the inverse Noether theorem in the Hamiltonian form, obtain all the integrals of motion corresponding to each variational (Noether) symmetry. We discover that in the two-component form we have only a single nonlocal recursion operator. Composing the recursion operator with the first Hamiltonian operator we obtain second Hamiltonian operator. We check the Jacobi identities for the second Hamiltonian operator and compatibility of the two Hamiltonian structures using P. Olver's theory of functional multi-vectors. Our well-founded conjecture is that P. Olver's method works fine for nonlocal operators. We show that the general heavenly equation in the two-component form is a bi-Hamiltonian system integrable in the sense of Magri. We demonstrate how to obtain nonlocal Hamiltonian flows generated by local Hamiltonians by using formal adjoint recursion operator.

A family of heavenly metrics

This is a corrected and essentially extended version of the previous preprint arXiv:gr-qc/0105088 v4 (2002) by Y. Nutku and M. Sheftel containing new results. It is being published now in honor of Y. Nutku's memory. All responsibility for the additions and changes must be attributed to M. Sheftel. We present new anti-self-dual exact solutions of the Einstein field equations with Euclidean and neutral (ultra-hyperbolic) signatures that admit only one rotational Killing vector. Such solutions of the Einstein field equations are determined by non-invariant solutions of Boyer-Finley ($BF$) equation. For the case of Euclidean signature such a solution of the $BF$ equation was first constructed by Calderbank and Tod. Two years later, Martina, Sheftel and Winternitz applied the method of group foliation to the Boyer-Finley equation and reproduced the Calderbank-Tod solution together with new solutions for the neutral signature. In the case of Euclidean signature we obtain new metrics which asymptotically locally look like a flat space and have a non-removable singular point at the origin. In the case of ultra-hyperbolic signature there exist three inequivalent forms of metric. Only one of these can be obtained by analytic continuation from the Calderbank-Tod solution whereas the other two are new.

Anti-self-dual gravity from asymmetric heavenly equation standpoint

In paper [3] on the classification of second-order PDEs with four independent variables that possess partner symmetries, asymmetric heavenly equation appears as one of canonical equations admitting partner symmetries. It was shown that all these canonical equations, together with general heavenly equation of Dubrov and Ferapontov [4], provide potentials for anti-self-dual Ricci-flat vacuum metrics [1,2,5], the asymmetric heavenly equation presenting the only exception so far. Our aim here is to show that the latter equation also governs anti-self-dual vacuum heavenly metric. We present the corresponding basis of null vector fields, null tetrad of coframe 1-forms and a general form of the metric. We obtain a multi-parameter polynomial solution of our equation which yields a family of metrics with the above properties. Riemann curvature 2-forms are also explicitly presented for the cubic solution to modified heavenly equation [4], which is a particular case of the asymmetric heavenly equation.

General heavenly equation governs anti-self-dual gravity

We show that the general heavenly equation, suggested recently by Doubrov and Ferapontov \cite{fer}, governs anti-self-dual (ASD) gravity. We derive ASD Ricci-flat vacuum metric governed by the general heavenly equation, null tetrad and basis of 1-forms for this metric. We present algebraic exact solutions of the general heavenly equation as a set of zeros of homogeneous polynomials in independent and dependent variables. A real solution is obtained for the case of neutral signature.

Bi-Hamiltonian representation, symmetries and integrals of mixed heavenly and Husain systems

In the recent paper by one of the authors (MBS) and A. A. Malykh on the classification of second-order PDEs with four independent variables that possess partner symmetries (J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. Vol. 42 (2009) 395202 (20pp)), mixed heavenly equation and Husain equation appear as closely related canonical equations admitting partner symmetries. Here for the mixed heavenly equation and Husain equation, formulated in a two-component form, we present recursion operators, Lax pairs of Olver-Ibragimov-Shabat type and discover their Lagrangians, symplectic and bi-Hamiltonian structure. We obtain all point and second-order symmetries, integrals and bi-Hamiltonian representations of these systems and their symmetry flows together with infinite hierarchies of nonlocal higher symmetries.

On a class of second-order PDEs admitting partner symmetries

Recently we have demonstrated how to use partner symmetries for obtaining noninvariant solutions of heavenly equations of Plebanski that govern heavenly gravitational metrics. In this paper, we present a class of scalar second-order PDEs with four variables, that possess partner symmetries and contain only second derivatives of the unknown. We present a general form of such a PDE together with recursion relations between partner symmetries. This general PDE is transformed to several simplest canonical forms containing the two heavenly equations of Plebanski among them and two other nonlinear equations which we call mixed heavenly equation and asymmetric heavenly equation. On an example of the mixed heavenly equation, we show how to use partner symmetries for obtaining noninvariant solutions of PDEs by a lift from invariant solutions. Finally, we present Ricci-flat self-dual metrics governed by solutions of the mixed heavenly equation and its Legendre transform.

Friedmann Equation for Brans Dicke Cosmology

In the context of Brans-Dicke scalar tensor theory of gravitation, the cosmological Friedmann equation which relates the expansion rate $H$ of the universe to the various fractions of energy density is analyzed rigorously. It is shown that Brans-Dicke scalar tensor theory of gravitation brings a negligible correction to the matter density component of Friedmann equation. Besides, in addition to $Ω_Λ$ and $Ω_{M}$ in standard Einstein cosmology, another density parameter, $Ω_{_Δ}$, is expected by the theory. This implies that if $Ω_{_Δ}$ is found to be nonzero, data will favor this model instead of the standard Einstein cosmological model with cosmological constant and will enable more accurate predictions for the rate of change of Newtonian gravitational constant in the future.

Self-dual gravity is completely integrable

We discover multi-Hamiltonian structure of complex Monge-Ampere equation (CMA) set in a real first-order two-component form. Therefore, by Magri's theorem this is a completely integrable system in four real dimensions. We start with Lagrangian and Hamiltonian densities and obtain a symplectic form and the Hamiltonian operator that determines the Dirac bracket. We have calculated all point symmetries of two-component CMA system and Hamiltonians of the symmetry flows. We have found two new real recursion operators for symmetries which commute with the operator of a symmetry condition on solutions of the CMA system. These operators form two Lax pairs for the two-component system. The recursion operators, being applied to the first Hamiltonian operator, generate infinitely many real Hamiltonian structures. We show how to construct an infinite hierarchy of higher commuting flows together with the corresponding infinite chain of their Hamiltonians.

Lift of Invariant to Non-Invariant Solutions of Complex Monge-Ampère Equations

We show how partner symmetries of the elliptic and hyperbolic complex Monge-Ampère equations (CMA and HCMA) provide a lift of non-invariant solutions of three- and two-dimensional reduced equations, i.e., a lift of invariant solutions of the original CMA and HCMA equations, to non-invariant solutions of the latter four-dimensional equations. The lift is applied to non-invariant solutions of the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation to yield non-invariant solutions of CMA, and to non-invariant solutions of three-dimensional wave equation and three-dimensional hyperbolic Boyer-Finley equation to yield non-invariant solutions of HCMA. By using these solutions as metric potentials, it is possible to construct four-dimensional Ricci-flat metrics of Euclidean and ultra-hyperbolic signatures that have non-zero curvature tensors and no Killing vectors.

Lift of noninvariant solutions of heavenly equations from three to four dimensions and new ultra-hyperbolic metrics

We demonstrate that partner symmetries provide a lift of noninvariant solutions of three-dimensional Boyer-Finley equation to noninvariant solutions of four-dimensional hyperbolic complex Monge-Ampere equation. The lift is applied to noninvariant solutions of the Boyer-Finley equation, obtained earlier by the method of group foliation, to yield noninvariant solutions of the hyperbolic complex Monge-Ampere equation. Using these solutions we construct new Ricci-flat ultra-hyperbolic metrics with non-zero curvature tensor that have no Killing vectors.

Multi-Hamiltonian structure of Plebanski's second heavenly equation

We show that Plebanski's second heavenly equation, when written as a first-order nonlinear evolutionary system, admits multi-Hamiltonian structure. Therefore by Magri's theorem it is a completely integrable system. Thus it is an example of a completely integrable system in four dimensions.

Anti-self-dual Riemannian metrics without Killing vectors, can they be realized on K3?

Explicit Riemannian metrics with Euclidean signature and anti-self dual curvature that do not admit any Killing vectors are presented. The metric and the Riemann curvature scalars are homogenous functions of degree zero in a single real potential and its derivatives. The solution for the potential is a sum of exponential functions which suggests that for the choice of a suitable domain of coordinates and parameters it can be the metric on a compact manifold. Then, by the theorem of Hitchin, it could be a class of metrics on $K3$, or on surfaces whose universal covering is $K3$.

Partner symmetries of the complex Monge-Ampere equation yield hyper-Kahler metrics without continuous symmetries

We extend the Mason-Newman Lax pair for the elliptic complex Monge-Ampère equation so that this equation itself emerges as an algebraic consequence. We regard the function in the extended Lax equations as a complex potential. We identify the real and imaginary parts of the potential, which we call partner symmetries, with the translational and dilatational symmetry characteristics respectively. Then we choose the dilatational symmetry characteristic as the new unknown replacing the Kähler potential which directly leads to a Legendre transformation and to a set of linear equations satisfied by a single real potential. This enables us to construct non-invariant solutions of the Legendre transform of the complex Monge-Ampère equation and obtain hyper-Kähler metrics with anti-self-dual Riemann curvature 2-form that admit no Killing vectors.

Method of group foliation, hodograph transformation and non-invariant solutions of the Boyer-Finley equation

We present the method of group foliation for constructing non-invariant solutions of partial differential equations on an important example of the Boyer-Finley equation from the theory of gravitational instantons. We show that the commutativity constraint for a pair of invariant differential operators leads to a set of its non-invariant solutions. In the second part of the paper we demonstrate how the hodograph transformation of the ultra-hyperbolic version of Boyer-Finley equation in an obvious way leads to its non-invariant solution obtained recently by Manas and Alonso. Due to extra symmetries, this solution is conditionally invariant, unlike non-invariant solutions obtained previously. We make the hodograph transformation of the group foliation structure and derive three invariant relations valid for the hodograph solution, additional to resolving equations, in an attempt to obtain the orbit of this solution.

Group foliation and non-invariant solutions of the heavenly equation

The main physical result of this paper are exact analytical solutions of the heavenly equation, of importance in the general theory of relativity. These solutions are not invariant under any subgroup of the symmetry group of the equation. The main mathematical result is a new method of obtaining noninvariant solutions of partial differential equations with infinite dimensional symmetry groups. The method involves the compatibility of the given equations with a differential constraint, which is automorphic under a specific symmetry subgroup, the latter acting transitively on the submanifold of the common solutions. By studying the integrability of the resulting conditions, one can provide an explicit foliation of the entire solution manifold of the considered equations.
