Dielectric response in proteins: The proteotronics approach

The dielectric properties of proteins, particularly in their hydrated state, have been extensively studied. Numerous theoretical and experimental investigations have reported values of both the permittivity and the intrinsic dipole moments of specific proteins under well-defined hydration conditions. Since even approximate estimates of these properties are relevant from both fundamental and applied perspectives, we propose a easy-to-use method to calculate the relative permittivity that can be readily integrated into proteotronics workflows. To validate the proposed approach, we compare the results with those obtained using a classical macroscopic method. The outcomes are consistent and contribute further insight into this long-debated issue.

2-loop scattering on superstring and supermembrane in flat space

We consider the S-matrix of transverse scalar excitations on an infinite $D=10$ GS superstring and $D=11$ supermembrane in flat target space. We compute the 4-particle scattering amplitude in the 2-loop approximation and demonstrate that, like in the Nambu string case, the $D=10$ GS string S-matrix does not contain non-trivial 2d UV divergences (UV pole not accompanied by terms with logarithms of momenta is an artifact of dimensional regularization). This is consistent with underlying integrability of this model which is maintaining by adding appropriate local counterterms. In the supermembrane case there are no 1-loop divergences but we find a genuine 2-loop UV pole. This demonstrates non-finiteness of the world-volume S-matrix of the M2 brane theory.

Four-dimensional $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal long circular quivers

We study four-dimensional $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal circular, cyclic symmetric quiver theories which are planar equivalent to $\mathcal N=4$ super Yang-Mills. We use localization to compute nonplanar corrections to the free energy and the circular half-BPS Wilson loop in these theories for an arbitrary number of nodes, and examine their behaviour in the limit of long quivers. Exploiting the relationship between the localization quiver matrix integrals and an integrable Bessel operator, we find a closed-form expression for the leading nonplanar correction to both observables in the limit when the number of nodes and 't Hooft coupling become large. We demonstrate that it has different asymptotic behaviour depending on how the two parameters are compared, and interpret this behaviour in terms of properties of a lattice model defined on the quiver diagram.

Quorum Sensing as a long-range interaction for bacteria growth and bioluminescence

We study the role of Quorum Sensing (QS) in the growth of bacterial colonies and in the bioluminescence produced. These two phenomena are both regulated by QS and the experimental data show a non-trivial correlation between them. It is also known that the specific bacterial substrate potentially modifies the behavior of the colony. In the specific case of the bioluminescent gram-negative bacterium, Vibrio harveyi, we propose a three-autoinducer model in which QS is described in terms of long-range interaction between charged objects placed on a regular network and playing the role of bacteria. The charges spread in the network through fictitious non-linear electrostatic interactions. QS is monitored by analyzing the current flowing within the network. The model parameters are determined by comparing the simulations with the data present in the literature and related to liquid cultures. New colony growth measurements are then performed on Vibrio campbelli (a member of the clade Harveyi) grown on hydroxyapatite (HA) substrates relevant for biomedical applications. Growth on the substrate differs from growth in liquid culture, although the observed bioluminescence is similar. We exploit our model to understand the differences between colonies in liquid culture and on substrate in terms of the relative role and cooperation of the three autoinducers.

Non-planar corrections in orbifold/orientifold $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal theories from localization

We study non-planar corrections in two special $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal $SU(N)$ gauge theories that are planar-equivalent to $\mathcal N=4$ SYM theory: two-nodes quiver model with equal couplings and $\mathcal N=2$ vector multiplet coupled to two hypermultiplets in rank-2 symmetric and antisymmetric representations. We focus on two observables in these theories that admit representation in terms of localization matrix model: free energy on 4-sphere and the expectation value of half-BPS circular Wilson loop. We extend the methods developed in arXiv:2207.11475 to derive a systematical expansion of non-planar corrections to these observables at strong 't Hooft coupling constant $\lambda$. We show that the leading non planar corrections are given by a power series in $\lambda^{3/2}/N^2$ with rational coefficients. Sending $N$ and the coupling constant $\lambda$ to infinity with $\lambda^{3/2}/N^2$ kept fixed corresponds to the familiar double scaling limit in matrix models. We find that in this limit the observables in the two models are related in a remarkably simple way: the free energies differ by the factor of $2$, whereas the Wilson loop expectation values coincide. Surprisingly, these relations hold only at strong coupling, they are not valid in the weak coupling regime. We also discuss a dual string theory interpretation of the leading corrections to the free energy in the double scaling limit suggesting their relation to curvature corrections in type IIB string effective action.

Exact strong coupling results in $\cal N$=2 $Sp(2N)$ superconformal gauge theory from localization

We apply the localization technique to compute the free energy on four-sphere and the circular BPS Wilson loop in the four-dimensional $\cal N$=2 superconformal $Sp(2N)$ gauge theory containing vector multiplet coupled to four hypermultiplets in fundamental representation and one hypermultiplet in rank-2 antisymmetric representation. This theory is unique among similar $\cal N$=2 superconformal models that are planar-equivalent to $\cal N$=4 SYM in that the corresponding localization matrix model has the interaction potential containing single-trace terms only. We exploit this property to show that, to any order in large $N$ expansion and an arbitrary 't Hooft coupling $\lambda$, the free energy and the Wilson loop satisfy Toda lattice equations. Solving these equations at strong coupling, we find remarkably simple expressions for these observables which include all corrections in $1/N$ and $1/\sqrt{\lambda}$. We also compute the leading exponentially suppressed ${\cal O}(e^{-\sqrt{\lambda}})$ corrections and consider a generalization to the case when the fundamental hypermultiplets have a non-zero mass. The string theory dual of this $\cal N$=2 gauge theory should be a particular orientifold of AdS$_5 \times S^5$ type IIB string and we discuss the string theory interpretation of the obtained strong-coupling results.

Strong coupling expansion in $\mathbf{\mathcal N=2}$ superconformal theories and the Bessel kernel

We consider strong 't Hooft coupling expansion in special four-dimensional $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal models that are planar-equivalent to $\mathcal N=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. Various observables in these models that admit localization matrix model representation can be expressed at large $N$ in terms of a Fredholm determinant of a Bessel operator. The latter previously appeared in the study of level spacing distributions in matrix models and, more recently, in four-point correlation functions of infinitely heavy half-BPS operators in planar $\mathcal N=4$ SYM. We use this relation and a suitably generalized Szego-Akhiezer-Kac formula to derive the strong 't Hooft coupling expansion of the leading corrections to free energy, half-BPS circular Wilson loop, and certain correlators of chiral primaries operators in the $\mathcal N=2$ models. This substantially generalizes partial results in the literature and represents a challenge for dual string theory calculations in AdS/CFT context. We also demonstrate that the resulting strong-coupling expansions suffer from Borel singularities and require adding non-perturbative, exponentially suppressed corrections. As a byproduct of our analysis, we determine the non-perturbative correction to the above mentioned four-point correlator in planar $\mathcal N=4$ SYM.

Exact results in a N=2 superconformal gauge theory at strong coupling

We consider the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYM theory with gauge group SU($N$) and a matter content consisting of one multiplet in the symmetric and one in the anti-symmetric representation. This conformal theory admits a large-$N$ 't Hooft expansion and is dual to a particular orientifold of $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$. We analyze this gauge theory relying on the matrix model provided by localization a la Pestun. Even though this matrix model has very non-trivial interactions, by exploiting the full Lie algebra approach to the matrix integration, we show that a large class of observables can be expressed in a closed form in terms of an infinite matrix depending on the 't Hooft coupling $\lambda$. These exact expressions can be used to generate the perturbative expansions at high orders in a very efficient way, and also to study analytically the leading behavior at strong coupling. We successfully compare these predictions to a direct Monte Carlo numerical evaluation of the matrix integral and to the Pad\'e resummations derived from very long perturbative series, that turn out to be extremely stable beyond the convergence disk $|\lambda|<\pi^2$ of the latter.

Strong coupling expansion of free energy and BPS Wilson loop in $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal models with fundamental hypermultiplets

As a continuation of the study (in arXiv:2102.07696 and arXiv:2104.12625) of strong-coupling expansion of non-planar corrections in $\mathcal N=2$ 4d superconformal models we consider two special theories with gauge groups $SU(N)$ and $Sp(2N)$. They contain $N$-independent numbers of hypermultiplets in rank 2 antisymmetric and fundamental representations and are planar-equivalent to the corresponding $\mathcal N=4$ SYM theories. These $\mathcal N=2$ theories can be realised on a system of $N$ D3-branes with a finite number of D7-branes and O7-plane; the dual string theories should be particular orientifolds of $AdS_5\times S^5$ superstring. Starting with the localization matrix model representation for the $\mathcal N=2$ partition function on $S^4$ we find exact differential relations between the $1/N$ terms in the corresponding free energy $F$ and the $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS Wilson loop expectation value $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ and also compute their large 't Hooft coupling ($\lambda \gg 1$) expansions. The structure of these expansions is different from the previously studied models without fundamental hypermultiplets. In the more tractable $Sp(2N)$ case we find an exact resummed expression for the leading strong coupling terms at each order in the $1/N$ expansion. We also determine the exponentially suppressed at large $\lambda$ contributions to the non-planar corrections to $F$ and $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ and comment on their resurgence properties. We discuss dual string theory interpretation of these strong coupling expansions.

N=2 Conformal SYM theories at large N

We consider a class of N=2 conformal SU(N) SYM theories in four dimensions with matter in the fundamental, two-index symmetric and anti-symmetric representations, and study the corresponding matrix model provided by localization on a sphere S4, which also encodes information on flat-space observables involving chiral operators and circular BPS Wilson loops. We review and improve known techniques for studying the matrix model in the large-N limit, deriving explicit expressions in perturbation theory for these observables. We exploit both recursive methods in the so-called full Lie algebra approach and the more standard Cartan sub-algebra approach based on the eigenvalue distribution. The sub-class of conformal theories for which the number of fundamental hypermultiplets does not scale with N differs in the planar limit from the N=4 SYM theory only in observables involving chiral operators of odd dimension. In this case we are able to derive compact expressions which allow to push the small 't Hooft coupling expansion to very high orders. We argue that the perturbative series have a finite radius of convergence and extrapolate them numerically to intermediate couplings. This is preliminary to an analytic investigation of the strong coupling behavior, which would be very interesting given that for such theories holographic duals have been proposed.

On induced action for conformal higher spins in curved background

We continue the investigation of the structure of the action for a tower of conformal higher spin fields in non-trivial 4d background metric recently discussed in arXiv:1609.09381. The action is defined as an induced one from path integral of a conformal scalar field in curved background coupled to higher spin fields. We analyse in detail the dependence of the quadratic part of the induced action on the spin 1 and spin 3 fields, determining the presence of a curvature-dependent mixed spin 1 - spin 3 term. One consequence is that the pure spin 3 kinetic term cannot be gauge-invariant on its own beyond the leading term in small curvature expansion. We also compute the non-zero contribution of the 1-3 mixing term to the conformal anomaly c-coefficient. One is thus to determine all such mixing terms before addressing the question of possible vanishing of the total c-coefficient in the conformal higher spin theory.

Partition function of free conformal fields in 3-plet representation

Simplest examples of AdS/CFT duality correspond to free CFTs in d dimensions with fields in vector or adjoint representation of an internal symmetry group dual in the large N limit to a theory of massless or massless plus massive higher spins in AdS_{d+1}. One may also study generalizations when conformal fields belong to higher dimensional representations, i.e. carry more than two internal symmetry indices. Here we consider the case of the 3-fundamental ("3-plet") representation. One motivation is a conjectured connection to multiple M5-brane theory: heuristic arguments suggest that it may be related to an (interacting) CFT of 6d (2,0) tensor multiplets in 3-plet representation of large N symmetry group that has an AdS_7 dual. We compute the singlet partition function Z on S^1 x S^{d-1} for a free field in 3-plet representation of U(N) and analyse its novel large N behaviour. The large N limit of the low temperature expansion of Z which is convergent in the vector and adjoint cases here is only asymptotic, reflecting the much faster growth of the number of singlet operators with dimension, indicating a phase transition at very low temperature. Indeed, while the critical temperatures in the vector (T_c ~ N^a, a >0) and adjoint (T_c ~ 1) cases are finite, we find that in the 3-plet case T_c ~ 1/ log N, i.e. it approaches zero at large N. We discuss some details of large N solution for the eigenvalue distribution. Similar conclusions apply to higher p-plet representations of U(N) or O(N) and also to the free p-tensor theories invariant under [U(N)]^p or [O(N)]^p starting with p=3.

$C_T$ for higher derivative conformal fields and anomalies of (1,0) superconformal 6d theories

In arXiv:1510.02685 we proposed linear relations between the Weyl anomaly $c_1, c_2, c_3$ coefficients and the 4 coefficients in the chiral anomaly polynomial for (1,0) superconformal 6d theories. These relations were determined up to one free parameter $ξ$ and its value was then conjectured using some additional assumptions. A different value for $ξ$ was recently suggested in arXiv:1702.03518 using a different method. Here we confirm that this latter value is indeed the correct one by providing an additional data point: the Weyl anomaly coefficient $c_3$ for the higher derivative (1,0) superconformal 6d vector multiplet. This multiplet contains the 4-derivative conformal gauge vector, 3-derivative fermion and 2-derivative scalar. We find the corresponding value of $c_3$ which is proportional to the coefficient $C_T$ in the 2-point function of stress tensor using its relation to the first derivative of the Renyi entropy or the second derivative of the free energy on the product of thermal circle and 5d hyperbolic space. We present some general results of computation of the Renyi entropy and $C_T$ from the partition function on $S^1 \times \mathbb H^{d-1}$ for higher derivative conformal scalars, spinors and vectors in even dimensions. We also give an independent derivation of the conformal anomaly coefficients of the higher derivative vector multiplet from the Seeley-DeWitt coefficients on an Einstein background.

On triviality of S-matrix in conformal higher spin theory

We consider the conformal higher spin (CHS) theory in d=4 that contains the s=1 Maxwell vector, s=2 Weyl graviton and their higher spin s=3,4,... counterparts with higher-derivative \box^s kinetic terms. The interacting action for such theory can be found as the coefficient of the logarithmically divergent part in the induced action for sources coupled to higher spin currents in a free complex scalar field model. We explicitly determine some cubic and quartic interaction vertices in the CHS action from scalar loop integrals. We then compute the simplest tree-level 4-particle scattering amplitudes 11 -> 11, 22 -> 22 and 11 -> 22 and find that after summing up all the intermediate CHS exchanges they vanish. This generalises the vanishing of the scattering amplitude for external conformal scalars interacting via the exchange of all CHS fields found earlier in arXiv:1512.08896. This vanishing should generalise to all scattering amplitudes in the CHS theory and as in the conformal scalar scattering case should be a consequence of the underlying infinite dimensional higher spin symmetry that extends the standard conformal symmetry.

Iterating free-field AdS/CFT: higher spin partition function relations

We find a simple relation between a free higher spin field partition function on thermal quotient of AdS(d+1) and the partition function of the associated d-dimensional conformal higher spin field on thermal quotient of AdS(d). Starting with a conformal higher spin field defined on AdS(d) one may also associate to it another conformal field in d-1 dimensions, thus "iterating" AdS/CFT. We observe that in the case of d=4 this iteration leads to a "trivial" 3d higher spin conformal theory with parity-even non-local action: it describes zero total number of dynamical degrees of freedom and the corresponding partition function on thermal AdS(3) is equal to 1.

Conformal a-anomaly of some non-unitary 6d superconformal theories

We compute the conformal anomaly a-coefficient for some non-unitary (higher derivative or non-gauge-invariant) 6d conformal fields and their supermultiplets. We use the method based on a connection between 6d determinants on S^6 and 7d determinants on AdS_7. We find, in particular, that (1,0) supermultiplet containing 4-derivative gauge-invariant conformal vector has precisely the value of a-anomaly as attributed in arXiv:1506.03807 (on the basis of R-symmetry and gravitational 't Hooft matching) to the standard (1,0) vector multiplet. We also show that higher derivative (2,0) 6d conformal supergravity coupled to exactly 26 (2,0) tensor multiplets has vanishing a-anomaly. This is the 6d counterpart of the known fact of cancellation of the conformal anomaly in the 4d system of N=4 conformal supergravity coupled to 4 vector N=4 multiplets. In the case when 5 of tensor multiplets are chosen to be ghost-like and the conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken by a quadratic scalar constraint the resulting IR theory may be identified with (2,0) Poincare supergravity coupled to 21=26-5 tensor multiplets. The latter theory is known to be special: it is gravitational anomaly free and results upon compactification of 10d type IIB supergravity on K3.

On higher spin partition functions

We observe that the partition function of the set of all free massless higher spins s=0,1,2,3,... in flat space is equal to one: the ghost determinants cancel against the "physical" ones or, equivalently, the (regularized) total number of degrees of freedom vanishes. This reflects large underlying gauge symmetry and suggests analogy with supersymmetric or topological theory. The Z=1 property extends also to the AdS background, i.e. the 1-loop vacuum partition function of Vasiliev theory is equal to 1 (assuming a particular regularization of the sum over spins); this was noticed earlier as a consistency requirement for the vectorial AdS/CFT duality. We find that Z=1 is also true in the conformal higher spin theory (with higher-derivative d^{2s} kinetic terms) expanded near flat or conformally flat S^4 background. We also consider the partition function of free conformal theory of symmetric traceless rank s tensor field which has 2-derivative kinetic term but only scalar gauge invariance in flat 4d space. This non-unitary theory has a Weyl-invariant action in curved background and corresponds to "partially massless" field in AdS_5. We discuss in detail the special case of s=2 (or "conformal graviton"), compute the corresponding conformal anomaly coefficients and compare them with previously found expressions for generic representations of conformal group in 4 dimensions.

Higher spins in AdS_5 at one loop: vacuum energy, boundary conformal anomalies and AdS/CFT

We consider general-symmetry higher spin fields in AdS_5 and derive expressions for their one-loop corrections to vacuum energy E and the associated 4d boundary conformal anomaly a-coefficient. We a propose a similar expression for the second conformal anomaly c-coefficient. We show that all the three quantities (E, a, c) computed for N=8 gauged 5d supergravity are -1/2 of the values for N=4 conformal 4d supergravity and also twice the values for N=4 Maxwell multiplet. This gives 5d derivation of the fact that the system of N=4 conformal supergravity and four N=4 Maxwell multiplets is anomaly free. The values of (E, a, c) for the states at level p of Kaluza-Klein tower of 10d type IIB supergravity compactified on S^5 turn out to be equal to those for p copies of N=4 Maxwell multiplets. This may be related to the fact that these states appear in the tensor product of p superdoubletons. Under a natural regularization of the sum over p, the full 10d supergravity contribution is then minus that of the Maxwell multiplet, in agreement with the standard adjoint AdS/CFT duality (SU(n) SYM contribution is n^2-1 of one Maxwell multiplet). We also verify the matching of (E, a, c) for spin 0 and 1/2 boundary theory cases of vectorial AdS/CFT duality. The consistency conditions for vectorial AdS/CFT turn out to be equivalent to the cancellation of anomalies in the closely related 4d conformal higher spin theories. In addition, we study novel example of vectorial AdS/CFT duality when the boundary theory is described by free spin 1 fields and is dual to a particular higher spin theory in AdS_5 containing fields in mixed-symmetry representations. We also discuss its supersymmetric generalizations.
