Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mass models on a 3D mesh: V. The N2LO extension of the Skyrme EDF

We present BSkG5, the latest entry in the Brussels-Skyrme-on-a-Grid (BSkG) series and the first large-scale nuclear structure model based on next-to-next-to-leading order (N2LO) Skyrme energy density functional (EDF). By extending the traditional Skyrme EDF ansatz with central terms containing up to four gradients, we are able to combine an excellent global description of nuclear ground state properties with a stiff equation of state for pure neutron matter that is consistent with all astronomical observations of neutron stars. More precisely, the new model matches the accuracy of earlier BSkG models but with two parameters less: we achieve root-mean-square deviations of 0.649 MeV for 2457 atomic masses, 0.0267 fm for 810 charge radii, and 0.43 MeV for 45 primary fission barriers of actinide nuclei. We demonstrate that the complexities of N2LO EDFs are not insurmountable, even for demanding many-body calculations.

High-Resolution Laser Spectroscopy on the Hyperfine Structure of $^{255}$Fm (Z=100)

We report on high-resolution laser spectroscopy of $^{255}$Fm ($T_{1/2} = 20$h), one of the heaviest nuclides available from reactor breeding. The hyperfine structures in two different atomic ground-state transitions at 398.4~nm and 398.2~nm were probed by in-source laser spectroscopy at the RISIKO mass separator in Mainz, using the PI-LIST high-resolution ion source. Experimental results were combined with hyperfine fields from various atomic ab-initio calculations, in particular using MultiConfigurational Dirac-Hartree-Fock theory, as implemented in GRASP18. In this manner, the nuclear magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments were derived to be $\mu = -0.75(5)~ \mu_\textrm{N}$ and $Q_\textrm{S} = +5.84(13)$~eb, respectively. The magnetic moment indicates occupation of the $\nu$~7/2[613] Nilsson orbital, while the large quadrupole moment confirms strong, stable prolate deformation consistent with systematics in the heavy actinides. Comparisons with available expectation values from nuclear theory show good agreement, providing a stringent benchmark for the used theoretical models. These results revise earlier data and establish $^{255}$Fm as a reference isotope for future high-resolution studies.

Discovery of a new long-lived isomer in $^{114}$Rh via Penning-trap mass spectrometry

We report on mass measurements of three long-lived states in $^{114}$Rh performed with the JYFLTRAP Penning-trap mass spectrometer: the ground state and two isomers with estimated half-lives of about one second. The used Phase-Imaging Ion-Cyclotron-Resonance technique allowed for the discovery of a so far unknown second long-lived isomer. All three states were produced directly in proton-induced fission on a uranium target, whereas only the isomeric states were populated in the $\beta$ decay of the $^{114}$Ru ground state with spin-parity $0^+$. We propose spin-parity assignments of $(6^-)$ for the ground state, and $(3^+)$ and $(0^-)$ for the isomers. They resolve the puzzle of anomalous fission yields of this isotope despite the existing literature assigning a low angular momentum to the ground state. The experimental evidence is further supported by a detailed analysis based on mean-field calculations with the BSkG3 model. As for many other nuclei in this mass region, considering triaxial shapes is decisive for the interpretation of low-lying states of this nucleus. The discovery of a new isomer in $^{114}$Rh and our theoretical work challenge the currently adopted spin-parity assignments in this and several other odd-odd neutron-rich Rh isotopes.

Precision mass measurements in the zirconium region pin down the mass surface across the neutron midshell at $N=66$

Precision mass measurements of $^{104}$Y, $^{106}$Zr, $^{104,104m,109}$Nb, and $^{111,112}$Mo have been performed with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility. The order of the long-lived states in $^{104}$Nb was unambiguously established. The trend in two-neutron separation energies around the $N=66$ neutron midshell appeared to be steeper with respect to the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2020 extrapolations for the $_{39}$Y and $_{40}$Zr isotopic chains and less steep for the $_{41}$Nb chain, indicating a possible gap opening around $Z=40$. The experimental results were compared to the BSkG2 model calculations performed with and without vibrational and rotational corrections. All of them predict two low-lying minima for $^{106}$Zr. While the unaltered BSkG2 model fails to predict the trend in two-neutron separation energies, selecting the more deformed minima in calculations and removing the vibrational correction, the calculations are more in line with experimental data. The same is also true for the $2^+_1$ excitation energies and differences in charge radii in the Zr isotopes. The results stress the importance of improved treatment of collective corrections in large-scale models and further development of beyond-mean-field techniques.

Binding energies of ground and isomeric states in neutron-rich ruthenium isotopes: measurements at JYFLTRAP and comparison to theory

We report on precision mass measurements of $^{113,115,117}$Ru performed with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer at the Accelerator Laboratory of University of Jyv\"askyl\"a. The phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance technique was used to resolve the ground and isomeric states in $^{113,115}$Ru and enabled for the first time a measurement of the isomer excitation energies, $E_x(^{113}$Ru$^{m})=100.5(8)$ keV and $E_x(^{115}$Ru$^{m})=129(5)$ keV. The ground state of $^{117}$Ru was measured using the time-of-flight ion-cyclotron-resonance technique. The new mass-excess value for $^{117}$Ru is around 36 keV lower and 7 times more precise than the previous literature value. With the more precise ground-state mass values, the evolution of the two-neutron separation energies is further constrained and a similar trend as predicted by the BSkG1 model is obtained up to the neutron number $N=71$.

The mass of odd-odd nuclei in microscopic mass models

Accurate estimates of the binding energy of nuclei far from stability that cannot be produced in the laboratory are crucial to our understanding of nuclear processes in astrophysical scenarios. Models based on energy density functionals have shown that they are capable of reproducing all known masses with root-mean-square error better than 800 keV, while retaining a firm microscopic foundation. However, it was recently pointed out in [M. Hukkanen et al., arXiv:2210.10674] that the recent BSkG1 model fails to account for a contribution to the binding energy that is specific to odd-odd nuclei, and which can be studied by using appropriate mass difference formulas. We analyse here the (lacking) performance of three recent microscopic mass models with respect to such formulas and examine possibilities to remedy this deficiency in the future.

Odd-odd neutron-rich rhodium isotopes studied with the double Penning trap JYFLTRAP

Precision mass measurements of neutron-rich rhodium isotopes have been performed at the JYFLTRAP Penning trap mass spectrometer at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility. We report results on ground- and isomeric-state masses in $^{110,112,114,116,118}$Rh and the very first mass measurement of $^{120}$Rh. The isomeric states were separated and measured for the first time using the phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance (PI-ICR) technique. For $^{112}$Rh, we also report new half-lives for both the ground state and the isomer. The results are compared to theoretical predictions using the BSkG1 mass model and discussed in terms of triaxial deformation.

Angular analysis of $B^+ \to \rho^+\rho^0$ decays reconstructed in 2019-2020 Belle II data

We report on the first Belle II measurement of the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$) and longitudinal polarization fraction ($f_L$) of $B^+\to \rho^+\rho^0$ decays. We reconstruct $B^+\to \rho^+(\to \pi^+\pi^0(\to \gamma\gamma))\rho^0(\to \pi^+\pi^-)$ decays in a sample of SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019 and 2020 at the $\Upsilon$(4S) resonance and corresponding to $62.8$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We fit the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ candidate energy, continuum-suppression variable, dipion masses, and angular distributions of the resulting samples, to determine a signal yield of $104\pm16$ events. The signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to \rho^+\rho^0) = [20.6 \pm 3.2(\rm stat) \pm 4.0(\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, and $f_L(B^+ \to \rho^+\rho^0) = 0.936 ^{+0.049}_{-0.041}(\rm stat)\pm 0.021(\rm syst)$. This first Belle II $B^+ \to \rho^+\rho^0$ angular analysis yields results compatible with previous determinations, and indicates Belle II performance superior to early Belle results.

Measurements of branching fractions and CP-violating charge asymmetries in multibody charmless $B$ decays reconstructed in 2019-2020 Belle II data

We report on measurements of branching fractions ($\mathcal{B}$) and CP-violating charge asymmetries ($\mathcal{A}_{\rm CP}$) of multibody charmless $B$ decays reconstructed by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. We use a sample of collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance and corresponding to $62.8$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We use simulation to determine optimized event selections. The $\Delta E$ and $M_{\rm bc}$ distributions of the resulting samples are fit to determine signal yields of approximately 690, 840, and 380 decays for the channels $B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+$, $B^+ \to K^+\pi^-\pi^+$, and $B^0 \to K^+\pi^-\pi^0$, respectively. These yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+) = [35.8 \pm 1.6(\rm stat) \pm 1.4 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K^+\pi^-\pi^+) = [67.0 \pm 3.3 (\rm stat)\pm 2.3 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to K^+\pi^-\pi^0) = [38.1 \pm 3.5 (\rm stat)\pm 3.9 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{A}_{\rm CP}(B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+) = -0.103 \pm 0.042(\rm stat) \pm 0.020 (\rm syst)$, $\mathcal{A}_{\rm CP}(B^+ \to K^+\pi^-\pi^+) = -0.010 \pm 0.050 (\rm stat)\pm 0.021(\rm syst)$, and $\mathcal{A}_{\rm CP}(B^0 \to K^+\pi^-\pi^0) = 0.207 \pm 0.088 (\rm stat)\pm 0.011(\rm syst)$. Results are consistent with previous measurements and demonstrate detector performance comparable with the best Belle results.

Measurement of the branching fraction for $B^{0} \rightarrow \pi^{0} \pi^{0}$ decays reconstructed in 2019-2020 Belle II data

We report the first reconstruction of the $B^{0} \to \pi^{0} \pi^{0}$ decay mode at Belle II using samples of 2019 and 2020 data that correspond to 62.8 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We find $14.0^{+6.8}_{-5.6}$ signal decays, corresponding to a significance of 3.4 standard deviations and determine a branching ratio of $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \rightarrow \pi^{0} \pi^{0}) = [0.98^{+0.48}_{-0.39} \pm 0.27] \times 10^{-6}$. The results agree with previous determinations and contribute important information to an early assessment of detector performance and Belle II's potential for future determinations of $\alpha/\phi_2$ using $B \rightarrow \pi \pi$ modes.

Measurements of branching fractions and direct CP asymmetries in $B^{0}\to K^{+} \pi^{-}$, $B^+ \to K_{\rm S}^0\pi^+$ and $B^0 \to \pi^+\pi^-$ using 2019 and 2020 data

We report updated measurements of branching fractions ($\mathcal{B}$) and CP-violating charge asymmetries ($\mathcal{A_{\rm CP}}$) for charmless $B$ decays at Belle II, which operates on or near the $\Upsilon$(4S) resonance at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We use samples of 2019 and 2020 data corresponding to 62.8 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The samples are analysed using two-dimensional fits in $\Delta E$ and $M_{\it bc}$ to determine signal yields of approximately 568, 103, and 115 decays for the channels $B^0 \to K^+\pi^-$, $B^+ \to K_{\rm S}^0\pi^+$, and $B^0 \to \pi^+\pi^-$, respectively. Signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries for flavour-specific channels. The results are compatible with known determinations and contribute important information to an early assessment of Belle II detector performance.

Measurement of the time-integrated mixing probability $\chi_d$ with a semileptonic double-tagging strategy and $34.6 {\rm fb}^{-1}$ of Belle II collision data

We present the first measurement of the time-integrated mixing probability $\chi_d$ using Belle II data collected at a center-of-mass (CM) energy of 10.58 GeV, corresponding to the mass of the $\Upsilon$(4S) resonance, with an integrated luminosity of $34.6 {\rm fb}^{-1}$ at the SuperKEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. We reconstruct pairs of B mesons both of which decay to semileptonic final states. Using a novel methodology, we measure $\chi_d = 0.187 \pm 0.010 \text{ (stat.)} \pm 0.019 \text{ (syst.)}$, which is compatible with existing indirect and direct determinations.

Measurements of branching fractions and direct ${\it CP}$-violating asymmetries in $B^+ \to K^+ \pi^0~\mbox{and}~\pi^+ \pi^0$ decays using 2019 and 2020 Belle II data

The results are $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K^+\pi^0) = [11.9 ^{+1.1}_{-1.0} (\rm stat)\pm 1.6(\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to \pi^+\pi^0) = [5.5 ^{+1.0}_{-0.9} (\rm stat)\pm 0.7(\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal A_{\it CP}(B^+ \to K^+\pi^0) = -0.09 \pm 0.09 (\rm stat)\pm 0.03(\rm syst)$, and $\mathcal A_{\it CP}(B^+ \to \pi^+\pi^0) = -0.04 \pm 0.17 (\rm stat)\pm 0.06(\rm syst)$. The results are consistent with previous measurements and show a detector performance comparable with early Belle performance.

First search for direct $CP$-violating asymmetry in $B^0 \to K^0 \pi^0$ decays at Belle II

We report on the first measurement of the direct $CP$-violating asymmetry ($\mathcal{A}$) in the charmless decay $B^0 \to K^0\pi^0$ at Belle II and an updated measurement of its branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$). We use a sample of electron-positron collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance and corresponding to $62.8$ $\text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We reconstruct and select about $50$ $B^0 \to K_S^0 \pi^0$ candidates, and we measure $\mathcal{A}_{{K^0\pi^0}} = -0.40_{-0.44}^{+0.46} (\text{stat}) \pm 0.04 (\text{syst})$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to K^0 \pi^0) = [8.5_{-1.6}^{+1.7} (\text{stat}) \pm 1.2 (\text{syst})] \times 10^{-6}$. This is the first measurement of $CP$ violation in $B^0 \to K^0\pi^0$ decays reported by Belle II. The results agree with previous determinations and show a detector performance comparable with the best Belle results.

Measurement of the branching fractions of $B\to\eta' K$ decays using 2019/2020 Belle II data

This note describes the rediscovery of $B\to\eta' K$ decays in Belle II data, both in the charged and neutral final state: $B_0\to\eta' K_S$ and $B^\pm\to\eta' K^\pm$. The $\eta'$ is searched for in two decay modes: $\eta'\to\eta\pi^+\pi^-$ with $\eta\to\gamma\gamma$, and $\eta'\to\rho\gamma$. The analysis uses data collected in 2019 and 2020 at the SuperKEKB asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider, with an integrated luminosity of $62.8~fb^{-1}$, corresponding to $68.2$ million of $B\bar{B}$ pairs produced. The signal yield is obtained via an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to signal sensitive variables, obtaining branching ratios: $$\mathcal{B}\left(B^\pm\to\eta'K^\pm\right) = \left(63.4~^{+3.4}_{-3.3}\,(stat)\,\pm3.2\,(syst)\,\right) \times10^{-6} $$ $$\mathcal{B}\left(B_0\to\eta'K_S\right) = \left(59.9~^{+5.8}_{-5.5}\,(stat)\,\pm2.9\,(syst)\,\right) \times10^{-6} $$ which are consistent with world average.

Study of $B\to D^{(*)}h$ decays using $62.8~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of Belle II data

We report measurements related to hadronic $B$ decays to final states that contain charm mesons. The analyses are performed on a $62.8~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ data set collected by the Belle II experiment at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the mass of the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. The measurements reported are for the decay modes $B^-\to D^0 h^-$, $B^{-}\to D^{*0}h^-$, $\bar{B}^{0}\to D^{+} h^{-}$ and $\bar{B}^{0}\to D^{*+} h^{-}$, where $h=\pi$ or $K$. These modes are either signal or control channels for measurements related to the unitarity triangle angle $\gamma$ in direct or time-dependent $CP$-violation measurements. The reported observables are the ratios between the $B\to D^{(*)}K$ and $B\to D^{(*)}\pi$ decay rates, which are found to be in agreement with previous measurements.
