Formation of exotic baryon clusters in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Recent experiments at RHIC and LHC have demonstrated that there are excellent opportunities to produce light baryonic clusters of exotic matter (strange and anti-matter) in ultra-relativistic ion collisions. Within the hybrid-transport model UrQMD we show that the coalescence mechanism can naturally explain the production of these clusters in the ALICE experiment at LHC. As a consequence of this mechanism we predict the rapidity domains where the yields of such clusters are much larger than the observed one at midrapidity. This new phenomenon can lead to unique methods for producing exotic nuclei.

Influence of the hadronic phase on observables in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions

The hadronic phase in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions has a large influence on final state observables like multiplicity, flow and $p_t$ spectra, as studied in the UrQMD approach. In this model one assumes that a non-equilibrium decoupling phase follows a fluid dynamical description of the high density phase. Hadrons are produced assuming local thermal equilibrium and dynamically decouple during the hadronic rescattering until the particles are registered in the detectors. This rescattering of hadrons modifies every hadronic bulk observable. The apparent multiplicity of resonances is suppressed as compared to a chemical equilibrium freeze-out model, because the decay products rescatter. Therefore the resonances, which decay in the early hadronic phase, cannot be identified anymore by the invariant mass method. Stable and unstable particles change their momentum distribution by more than 30$\%$ through rescattering and their multiplicity is modified by resonance production and annihilation on a similar magnitude. These findings show that it is all but trivial to conclude from the final state observables on the properties of the system at an earlier time where it may have been in local equilibrium.

Sub-threshold charm production in nuclear collisions

We present the first predictions for sub-threshold open charm and charmonium production in nuclear collisions. The production mechanism is driven by multi-step scatterings of nucleons and their resonance states, accumulating sufficient energy for the production of $J/Ψ$, $Λ_c + \overline{D}$ and $D+\overline{D}$. Our results are of particular importance for the CBM experiment at FAIR, as they indicate that already at the SIS100 accelerator one can expect a significant number of charmed hadrons to be produced. This opens new possibilities to explore charm dynamics and the formation of charmed nuclei.

Event simulation based on three-fluid hydrodynamics for collisions at energies available at the Dubna Nuclotron-based Ion Collider Facility and at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Darmstadt

We present a new event generator based on the three-fluid hydrodynamics approach for the early stage of the collision, followed by a particlization at the hydrodynamic decoupling surface to join to a microscopic transport model, UrQMD, to account for hadronic final state interactions. We present first results for nuclear collisions of the FAIR/NICA energy scan program (Au+Au collisions, $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=4-11$ GeV). We address the directed flow of protons and pions as well as the proton rapidity distribution for two model EoS, one with a first order phase transition the other with a crossover type softening at high densities. The new simulation program has the unique feature that it can describe a hadron-to-quark matter transition which proceeds in the baryon stopping regime that is not accessible to previous simulation programs designed for higher energies.

Constraining high energy interaction mechanisms by studying forward hadron production at the LHC

We demonstrate that underlying assumptions concerning the structure of constituent parton Fock states in hadrons make a strong impact on the predictions of hadronic interaction models for forward hadron spectra and for long-range correlations between central and forward hadron production. Our analysis shows that combined studies of proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider by central and forward-looking detectors have a rich potential for discriminating between the main model approaches.

Hadronization conditions in relativistic nuclear collisions and the QCD pseudo-critical line

We compare the reconstructed hadronization conditions in relativistic nuclear collisions in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy range 4.7-2760 GeV in terms of temperature and baryon-chemical potential with lattice QCD calculations, by using hadronic multiplicities. We obtain hadronization temperatures and baryon chemical potentials with a fit to measured multiplicities by correcting for the effect of post-hadronization rescattering. The post-hadronization modification factors are calculated by means of a coupled hydrodynamical-transport model simulation under the same conditions of approximate isothermal and isochemical decoupling as assumed in the statistical hadronization model fits to the data. The fit quality is considerably better than without rescattering corrections, as already found in previous work. The curvature of the obtained "true" hadronization pseudo-critical line kappa is found to be 0.0048 +- 0.0026, in agreement with lattice QCD estimates; the pseudo-critical temperature at vanishing mu_B is found to be 164.3+-1.8 MeV.

Formation of hypernuclei in evaporation and fission processes

There are excellent opportunities to produce excited heavy hyper residues in relativistic hadron and peripheral heavy-ion collisions. We investigate the disintegration of such residues into hyper nuclei via evaporation of baryons and light clusters and their fission. Previously these processes were well known for normal nuclei as the decay channels at low excitation energies. We have generalized these models for the case of hyper-matter. In this way we make extension of nuclear reaction studies at low temperature into the strange sector. We demonstrate how the new decay channels can be integrated in the whole disintegration process. Their importance for mass and isotope distributions of produced hyper-fragments is emphasized. New and exotic isotopes obtained within these processes may provide a unique opportunity for investigating hyperon interaction in nuclear matter.

$Λ$ polarization in peripheral collisions at moderate relativistic energies

The polarization of $Λ$ hyperons from relativistic flow vorticity is studied in peripheral heavy ion reactions at FAIR and NICA energies, just above the threshold of the transition to the Quark-Gluon Plasma. Previous calculations at higher energies with larger initial angular momentum, predicted significant $Λ$ polarization based on the classical vorticity term in the polarization, while relativistic modifications decreased the polarization and changed its structure in the momentum space. At the lower energies studied here, we see the same effect namely that the relativistic modifications decrease the polarization arising from the initial shear flow vorticity.

Formation of hypernuclei in heavy-ion collisions around the threshold energies

In relativistic ion collisions there are excellent opportunities to produce and investigate hyper-nuclei. We have systematically studied the formation of hypernuclear spectator residues in peripheral heavy-ion collisions with the transport DCM and UrQMD models. The hyperon capture was calculated within the potential and coalescence approaches. We demonstrate that even at the beam energies around and lower than the threshold for producing Lambda hyperons in binary nucleon-nucleon interactions a considerable amount of hypernuclei, including multi-strange ones, can be produced. This is important for preparation of new experiments on hypernuclei in the wide energy range. The uncertainties of the predictions are investigated within the models, and the comparison with the strangeness production measured in experiments is also performed.

Heavy baryonic resonances, multistrange hadrons, and equilibration at energies available at the GSI Schwerionensynchrotron, SIS18

We study the details and time dependence of particle production in nuclear collisions at a fixed target beam energy of $E_{\mathrm{lab}}= 1.76$ A GeV with the UrQMD transport model. We find that the previously proposed production mechanism for multi strange hadrons, $ϕ$ and $Ξ$, are possible due to secondary interactions of incoming nuclei of the projectile and target with already created nuclear resonances, while the Fermi momenta of the nuclei play only a minor role. We also show how the centrality dependence of these particle multiplicities can be used to confirm the proposed mechanism, as it strongly depends on the number of participants in the reaction. Furthermore we investigate the time dependence of particle production in collisions of Ca+Ca at this beam energy, in order to understand the origins of the apparent chemical equilibration of the measured particle yields. We find that indeed the light hadron yields appear to be in equilibrium already from the very early stage of the collision while in fact no local equilibration, through multi collision processes, takes place. The apparent equilibrium is reached only through the decay of the resonances according to available phase space.

Color transparency in $π^-$-induced dilepton production on nuclei

We argue that the observation of the color transparency effect in the semiexclusive $A(π^-,l^+ l^-)$ process is important for determining whether it is possible to extract the generalized parton distributions of the nucleon from the elementary reaction $π^- p \to l^+ l^- n$ at $p_{\rm lab}=15-20$ GeV/c at small $|t|$ and large invariant mass of the dilepton pair $l^+ l^-$. Assuming that the transverse size of the pionic $q \bar q$ pair in the hard interaction point is similar to the one in the reaction $γ^* p\to π^+ n$ studied at JLab we predict large color transparency effects in the discussed kinematic range. We also suggest that the semiexclusive $ρ^0$ production in $π^-$-induced reactions in the same beam momentum region may provide new information on the dynamics of the interaction in the non-vacuum channel, while the $J/ψ$ production can be used to get information on $J/ψN$ total interaction cross section.,

Effects of EoS in viscous hydro+cascade model for the RHIC Beam Energy Scan

A state-of-the-art 3+1 dimensional cascade + viscous hydro + cascade model vHLLE+UrQMD has been applied to heavy ion collisions in RHIC Beam Energy Scan range $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=7.7\dots 200$ GeV. Based on comparison to available experimental data it was estimated that an effective value of shear viscosity over entropy density ratio $η/s$ in hydrodynamic stage has to decrease from $η/s=0.2$ to $0.08$ as collision energy increases from $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 7.7$ to $39$ GeV, and to stay at $η/s=0.08$ for $39\le\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}\le200$ GeV. In this work we show how an equation of state with first order phase transition affects the hydrodynamic evolution at those collision energies and changes the results of the model as compared to "default scenario" with a crossover type EoS from chiral model.

Hadronic resonance production and interaction in partonic and hadronic matter in EPOS3 with and without the hadronic afterburner UrQMD

We study the production of hadronic resonances and their interaction in the partonic and hadronic medium using the EPOS3 model, which employs the UrQMD model for the description of the hadronic phase. We investigate the centrality dependence of the yields and momentum distributions for various resonances (rho(770),K(892),phi(1020),Delta(1232),Sigma(1385),Lambda(1520),Xi(1530) and their antiparticles) in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN= 2.76 TeV. The predictions for K(892) and phi(1020) will be compared with the experimental data from the ALICE collaboration. The observed signal suppression of the K(892) with increasing centrality will be discussed with respect to the resonance interaction in the hadronic medium. The mean transverse momentum and other particle ratios such as phi(1020)/p and Omega/phi(1020) will be discussed with respect to additional contributions from the hadronic medium interactions.

Estimating $η/s$ of QCD matter at high baryon densities

We report on the application of a cascade + viscous hydro + cascade model for heavy ion collisions in the RHIC Beam Energy Scan range, $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=6.3\dots200$ GeV. By constraining model parameters to reproduce the data we find that the effective(average) value of the shear viscosity over entropy density ratio $η/s$ decreases from 0.2 to 0.08 when collision energy grows from $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}\approx7$ to 39 GeV.

Dileptons in a coarse-grained transport approach

We calculate dilepton spectra in heavy-ion collisions using a coarse-graining approach to the simulation of the created medium with the UrQMD transport model. This enables the use of dilepton-production rates evaluated in equilibrium quantum-field theory at finite temperatures and chemical potentials.

Determination of the structure of the $X(3872)$ in $\bar p A$ collisions

Currently, the structure of the $X(3872)$ meson is unknown. Different competing models of the $c\bar c$ exotic state $X(3872)$ exist, including the possibilities that this state is either a mesonic molecule with dominating $D^0 \bar D^{*0} +c.c.$ composition, a $c \bar c q \bar q$ tetraquark, or a $c \bar c$-gluon hybrid state. It is expected that the $X(3872)$ state is rather strongly coupled to the $\bar p p$ channel and, therefore, can be produced in $\bar p p$ and $\bar pA$ collisions at PANDA. We propose to test the hypothetical molecular structure of $X(3872)$ by studying the $D$ or $\bar D^{*}$ stripping reactions on a nuclear residue.

Estimation of the shear viscosity at finite net-baryon density from A+A collision data at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 7.7-200$ GeV

Hybrid approaches based on relativistic hydrodynamics and transport theory have been successfully applied for many years for the dynamical description of heavy ion collisions at ultrarelativistic energies. In this work a new viscous hybrid model employing the hadron transport approach UrQMD for the early and late non-equilibrium stages of the reaction, and 3+1 dimensional viscous hydrodynamics for the hot and dense quark-gluon plasma stage is introduced. This approach includes the equation of motion for finite baryon number, and employs an equation of state with finite net-baryon density to allow for calculations in a large range of beam energies. The parameter space of the model is explored, and constrained by comparison with the experimental data for bulk observables from SPS and the phase I beam energy scan at RHIC. The favored parameter values depend on energy, but allow to extract the effective value of the shear viscosity coefficient over entropy density ratio $η/s$ in the fluid phase for the whole energy region under investigation. The estimated value of $η/s$ increases with decreasing collision energy, which may indicate that $η/s$ of the quark-gluon plasma depends on baryochemical potential $μ_B$.

Electromagnetic probes in heavy-ion collisions: Messengers from the hot and dense phase

Due to their penetrating nature, electromagnetic probes, i.e., lepton-antilepton pairs (dileptons) and photons are unique tools to gain insight into the nature of the hot and dense medium of strongly-interacting particles created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, including hints to the nature of the restoration of chiral symmetry of QCD. Of particular interest are the spectral properties of the electromagnetic current-correlation function of these particles within the dense and/or hot medium. The related theoretical investigations of the in-medium properties of the involved particles in both the partonic and hadronic part of the QCD phase diagram underline the importance of a proper understanding of the properties of various hadron resonances in the medium.
