A new class of solutions of the DMPK equation

We introduce and discuss a new class of solutions of the DMPK equation in which some of the eigenvalues are grouped into clusters which are conserved in the asymptotic large distance limit (i.e. as the length of the wire increases). We give an explicit expression for the asymptotic expansion of these solutions and suggest some possible applications. In particular these new solution could be useful to avoid the quasi one dimensional constraint in the DMPK equation and to study the crossover between the metallic and insulating phases.

A computational approach to regulatory element discovery in eukaryotes

Gene regulation in Eukaryotes is mainly effected through transcription factors binding to rather short recognition motifs generally located upstream of the coding region. We present a novel computational method to identify regulatory elements in the upstream region of Eukaryotic genes. The genes are grouped in sets sharing an overrepresented short motif in their upstream sequence. For each set, the average expression level from a microarray experiment is determined: if this level is significantly higher or lower than the average taken over the whole genome, then the overrepresented motif shared by the genes in the set is likely to play a role in their regulation. We illustrate the method by applying it to the genome of {\it S. cerevisiae}, for which many datasets of microarray experiments are publicly available. Several known binding motifs are correctly recognized by our algorithm, and a new candidate is suggested for experimental verification.

String effects in the 3d gauge Ising model

We compare the predictions of the effective string description of confinement with a set of Montecarlo data for the 3d gauge Ising model at finite temperature. Thanks to a new algorithm which makes use of the dual symmetry of the model we can reach very high precisions even for large quark-antiquark distances. We are thus able to explore the large R regime of the effective string. We find that for large enough distances and low enough temperature the data are well described by a pure bosonic string. As the temperature increases higher order corrections become important and cannot be neglected even at large distances. These higher order corrections seem to be well described by the Nambu-Goto action truncated at the first perturbative order.

String effects in Polyakov loop correlators

We compare the predictions of the effective string description of confinement in finite temperature gauge theories to high precision Monte Carlo data for the three-dimensional Z(2) gauge theory. We show that string interaction effects become more relevant as the temperature is increased towards the deconfinement one, and are well modeled by a Nambu-Goto string action.

Finite temperature corrections in 2d integrable models

We study the finite size corrections for the magnetization and the internal energy of the 2d Ising model in a magnetic field by using transfer matrix techniques. We compare these corrections with the functional form recently proposed by Delfino and LeClair-Mussardo for the finite temperature behaviour of one-point functions in integrable 2d quantum field theories. We find a perfect agreement between theoretical expectations and numerical results. Assuming the proposed functional form as an input in our analysis we obtain a relevant improvement in the precision of the continuum limit estimates of both quantities.

String effects in Polyakov loop correlators

We compare the predictions of the effective string description of confinement in finite temperature gauge theories to high precision Monte Carlo data for the three-dimensional Z_2 gauge theory. First we review the predictions of the free bosonic string model and their asymptotic behavior in the various regimes of physical interest. Then we show that very good agreement with the Monte Carlo data is obtained, for temperatures not too close to the deconfinement one (typically T<T_c/3). For higher temperatures, higher order effects are not negligible: we show that they are accurately modeled by assuming a Nambu-Goto string action and computing its partition function at next-to-leading order.

Correlating overrepresented upstream motifs to gene expression: a computational approach to regulatory element discovery in eukaryotes

For each set, the average expression level from a microarray experiment is determined: If this level is significantly higher or lower than the average taken over the whole genome, then the overerpresented motif shared by the genes in the set is likely to play a role in their regulation. The method was tested by applying it to the genome of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, using the publicly available results of a DNA microarray experiment, in which expression levels for virtually all the genes were measured during the diauxic shift from fermentation to respiration. Several known motifs were correctly identified, and a new candidate regulatory sequence was determined.

Finding regulatory sites from statistical analysis of nucleotide frequencies in the upstream region of eukaryotic genes

We discuss two new approaches to extract relevant biological information on the Transcription Factors (and in particular to identify their binding sequences) from the statistical distribution of oligonucleotides in the upstream region of the genes. Both the methods are based on the notion of a ``regulatory network'' responsible for the various expression patterns of the genes. In particular we concentrate on families of coregulated genes and look for the simultaneous presence in the upstream regions of these genes of the same set of transcription factor binding sites. We discuss two instances which well exemplify the features of the two methods: the coregulation of glycolysis in Drosophila melanogaster and the diauxic shift in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Bound states in the 3d Ising model and implications for QCD at finite temperature and density

We study the spectrum of bound states of the three dimensional Ising model in the (h,beta) plane near the critical point. We show the existence of an unbinding line, defined as the boundary of the region where bound states exist. Numerical evidence suggests that this line coincides with the beta=beta_c axis. When the 3D Ising model is considered as an effective description of hot QCD at finite density, we conjecture the correspondence between the unbinding line and the line that separates the quark-gluon plasma phase from the superconducting phase. The bound states of the Ising model are conjectured to correspond to the diquarks of the latter phase of QCD.

Correction induced by irrelevant operators in the correlators of the 2d Ising model in a magnetic field

We investigate the presence of irrelevant operators in the 2d Ising model perturbed by a magnetic field, by studying the corrections induced by these operators in the spin-spin correlator of the model. To this end we perform a set of high precision simulations for the correlator both along the axes and along the diagonal of the lattice. By comparing the numerical results with the predictions of a perturbative expansion around the critical point we find unambiguous evidences of the presence of such irrelevant operators. It turns out that among the irrelevant operators the one which gives the largest correction is the spin 4 operator T^2 + \bar T^2 which accounts for the breaking of the rotational invariance due to the lattice. This result agrees with what was already known for the correlator evaluated exactly at the critical point and also with recent results obtained in the case of the thermal perturbation of the model.

Bound states and glueballs in three-dimensional Ising systems

We study the spectrum of massive excitations in three-dimensional models belonging to the Ising universality class. By solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation for 3D $ϕ^4$ theory in the broken symmetry phase we show that recently found non-perturbative states can be interpreted as bound states of the fundamental excitation. We show that duality predicts an exact correspondence between the spectra of the Ising model in the broken symmetry phase and of the Z(2) gauge theory in the confining phase. The interpretation of the glueball states of the gauge theory as bound states of the dual spin system allows us to explain the qualitative features of the glueball spectrum, in particular, its peculiar angular momentum dependence.

Bound states in the three dimensional phi^4 model

We discuss the spectrum of the three dimensional phi^4 theory in the broken symmetry phase. In this phase the effective potential between the elementary quanta of the model is attractive and bound states of two or more of them may exist. We give theoretical and numerical evidence for the existence of these bound states. Looking in particular at the Ising model realization of the phi^4 theory we show, by using duality, that these bound states are in one-to-one correspondence with the glueball states of the gauge Ising model. We discuss some interesting consequences of this identification.

Thermal operators and cluster topology in q-state Potts Model

We discuss a new class of identities between correlation functions which arise from a local Z_2 invariance of the partition function of the q-state Potts model on general graphs or lattices. Their common feature is to relate the thermal operators of the Potts model to some topological properties of the Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters. In particular it turns out that any even correlation function can be expressed in terms of observables which probe the linking properties of these clusters. This generalises a class of analogous relations recently found in the Ising model.

The critical equation of state of the 2D Ising model

We compute the 2n-point coupling constants in the high-temperature phase of the 2d Ising model by using transfer-matrix techniques. This provides the first few terms of the expansion of the effective potential (Helmholtz free energy) and of the equation of state in terms of the renormalized magnetization. By means of a suitable parametric representation, we determine an analytic extension of these expansions, providing the equation of state in the whole critical region in the t,h plane.

Non-analyticity of the Callan-Symanzik beta-function of two-dimensional O(N) model

We discuss the analytic properties of the Callan-Symanzik beta-function beta(g) associated with the zero-momentum four-point coupling g in the two-dimensional phi^4 model with O(N) symmetry. Using renormalization-group arguments, we derive the asymptotic behavior of beta(g) at the fixed point g^*. We argue that beta'(g) = beta'(g^*) + O(|g-g^*|^{1/7}) for N=1 and beta'(g) = beta'(g^*) + O(1/\log |g-g^*|) for N > 2. Our claim is supported by an explicit calculation in the Ising lattice model and by a 1/N calculation for the two-dimensional phi^4 theory. We discuss how these nonanalytic corrections may give rise to a slow convergence of the perturbative expansion in powers of g.

Short distance behaviour of correlators in the 2D Ising model in a magnetic field

We study the spin-spin, spin-energy and energy-energy correlators in the 2d Ising model perturbed by a magnetic field. We compare the results of a set of high precision Montecarlo simulations with the predictions of two different approximations: the Form Factor approach, based on the exact S-matrix description of the model, and a short distance perturbative expansion around the conformal point. Both methods give very good results, the first one performs better for distances larger than the correlation length, while the second one is more precise for distances smaller than the correlation length. In order to improve this agreement we extend the perturbative analysis to the second order in the derivatives of the OPE constants.

Lattice Gauge Theories and the AdS/CFT Correspondence

This is the write-up of a set of lectures on the comparison between Lattice Gauge Theories and AdS/CFT results for the non-perturbative behaviour of non-supersymmetric Yang Mills theories. These notes are intended for students which are assumed not to be experts in L.G.T. For this reason the first part is devoted to a pedagogical introduction to the Lattice regularization of QCD. In the second part we discuss some basic features of the AdS/CFT correspondence and compare the results obtained in the non-supersymmetric limit with those obtained on the Lattice. We discuss in particular the behaviour of the string tension and of the glueball spectrum. Lectures delivered at the School of Theoretical Physics (S.N.F.T.), Parma, September 1999.
