Critical amplitudes and mass spectrum of the 2D Ising model in a magnetic field

We compute the spectrum and several critical amplitudes of the two dimensional Ising model in a magnetic field with the transfer matrix method. The three lightest masses and their overlaps with the spin and the energy operators are computed on lattices of a width up to L=21. In extracting the continuum results we also take into account the corrections to scaling due to irrelevant operators. In contrast with previous Monte Carlo simulations our final results are in perfect agreement with the predictions of S-matrix and conformal field theory. We also obtain the amplitudes of some of the subleading corrections, for which no S-matrix prediction has yet been obtained.

Generalized two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory is a matrix string theory

We consider two-dimensional Yang-Mills theories on arbitrary Riemann surfaces. We introduce a generalized Yang-Mills action, which coincides with the ordinary one on flat surfaces but differs from it in its coupling to two-dimensional gravity. The quantization of this theory in the unitary gauge can be consistently performed taking into account all the topological sectors arising from the gauge-fixing procedure. The resulting theory is naturally interpreted as a Matrix String Theory, that is as a theory of covering maps from a two-dimensional world-sheet to the target Riemann surface.

Thermal Operators in Ising Percolation

We discuss a new cluster representation for the internal energy and the specific heat of the d-dimensional Ising model, obtained by studying the percolation mapping of an Ising model with an arbitrary set of antiferromagnetic links. Such a representation relates the thermal operators to the topological properties of the Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters of Ising percolation and is a powerful tool to get new exact relations on the topological structure of FK clusters of the Ising model defined on an arbitrary graph.

Non-perturbative states in the three-dimensional phi^4 theory

We study the spectrum of massive excitations of the three-dimensional phi^4 and Ising models, in the broken-symmetry phase. Using a variational method, we show that the spectrum contains all the 0+ states that one expects from duality with the glueball spectrum of the Z(2) gauge model. From the point of view of continuum phi^4 theory, we show that at least one of the states we find has a non-perturbative origin.

Non-perturbative states in the 3D phi^4 theory

We show that the spectrum of the three dimensional phi^4 theory in the broken symmetry phase contains non-perturbative states. We determine the spectrum using a new variational technique based on the introduction of operators corresponding to different length scales. The presence of non-perturbative states accounts for the discrepancy between Monte Carlo and perturbative results for the universal ratio xi/xi_2nd. We introduce and study some universal amplitude ratios related to the overlap of the spin operator with the states of the spectrum. The analysis is performed for the phi^4 theory regularized on a lattice and for the Ising model. This is a nice verification of the fact that universality reaches far beyond critical exponents. Finally, we show that the spectrum of the model, including non-perturbative states, accurately matches the glueball spectrum in the Z(2) gauge model, which is related to the Ising model through a duality transformation.

2D Yang-Mills Theory as a Matrix String Theory

Quantization of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on a torus in the gauge where the field strength is diagonal leads to twisted sectors that are completely analogous to the ones that originate long string states in Matrix String Theory. If these sectors are taken into account the partition function is different from the standard one found in the literature and the invariance of the theory under modular transformations of the torus appears to hold in a stronger sense. The twisted sectors are in one-to-one correspondence with the coverings of the torus without branch points, so they define by themselves a string theory. A possible duality between this string theory and the Gross-Taylor string is discussed, and the problems that one encounters in generalizing this approach to interacting strings are pointed out. This talk is based on a previous paper by the same authors, but it contains some new results and a better interpretation of the results already obtained.

Matrix string states in pure 2d Yang Mills theories

We quantize pure 2d Yang-Mills theory on a torus in the gauge where the field strength is diagonal. Because of the topological obstructions to a global smooth diagonalization, we find string-like states in the spectrum similar to the ones introduced by various authors in Matrix string theory. We write explicitly the partition function, which generalizes the one already known in the literature, and we discuss the role of these states in preserving modular invariance. Some speculations are presented about the interpretation of 2d Yang-Mills theory as a Matrix string theory.

The stability of the O(N) invariant fixed point in three dimensions

We study the stability of the O(N) fixed point in three dimensions under perturbations of the cubic type. We address this problem in the three cases $N=2,3,4$ by using finite size scaling techniques and high precision Monte Carlo simulations. It is well know that there is a critical value $2<N_c<4$ below which the O(N) fixed point is stable and above which the cubic fixed point becomes the stable one. While we cannot exclude that $N_c<3$, as recently claimed by Kleinert and collaborators, our analysis strongly suggests that $N_c$ coincides with 3.

Universal Amplitude Ratios in the 3D Ising Model

We present a high precision Monte Carlo study of various universal amplitude ratios of the three dimensional Ising spin model. Using state of the art simulation techniques we studied the model close to criticality in both phases. Great care was taken to control systematic errors due to finite size effects and correction to scaling terms. We obtain $C_+/C_-=4.75(3)$, $f_{+,2nd}/f_{-,2nd}=1.95(2)$ and $u^*=14.3(1)$. Our results are compatible with those obtained by field theoretic methods applied to the $ϕ^4$ theory and high and low temperature series expansions of the Ising model.

Spectrum of the gauge Ising model in three dimensions

We present a high precision Monte Carlo study of the spectrum of the Ising gauge theory in three dimensions in the confining phase. Using state of the art Monte Carlo techniques we are able to accurately determine up to three masses in a single channel. We compare our results with the SU(2) spectrum and with the prediction of the Isgur-Paton model. Our data strongly support the conjecture that the glueball spectrum is described by some type of flux tube model. We also compare the spectrum with some recent results for the correlation length in the 3d spin Ising model. This analysis sheds light on some nontrivial features of the duality transformation.

Analytic results in 2+1-dimensional Finite Temperature LGT

In a 2+1-dimensional pure LGT at finite temperature the critical coupling for the deconfinement transition scales as $β_c(n_t) = J_c n_t + a_1$, where $n_t$ is the number of links in the ``time-like'' direction of the symmetric lattice. We study the effective action for the Polyakov loop obtained by neglecting the space-like plaquettes, and we are able to compute analytically in this context the coefficient $a_1$ for any SU(N) gauge group; the value of $J_c$ is instead obtained from the effective action by means of (improved) mean field techniques. Both coefficients have already been calculated in the large N limit in a previous paper. The results are in very good agreement with the existing Monte Carlo simulations. This fact supports the conjecture that, in the 2+1-dimensional theory, space-like plaquettes have little influence on the dynamics of the Polyakov loops in the deconfined phase.

A new classification scheme for Random Matrix Theories

In the last few years several new Random Matrix Models have been proposed and studied. They have found application in various different contexts, ranging from the physics of mesoscopic systems to the chiral transition in lattice gauge theory. These new ensembles can be classified in terms of the same Dynkin diagrams and root lattices which are used in the classification of the Lie algebras.

Finite Temperature Lattice QCD in the Large N Limit

Our aim is to give a self-contained review of recent advances in the analytic description of the deconfinement transition and determination of the deconfinement temperature in lattice QCD at large N. We also include some new results, as for instance in the comparison of the analytic results with Montecarlo simulations. We first review the general set-up of finite temperature lattice gauge theories, using asymmetric lattices, and develop a consistent perturbative expansion in the coupling $β_s$ of the space-like plaquettes. We study in detail the effective models for the Polyakov loop obtained, in the zeroth order approximation in $β_s$, both from the Wilson action (symmetric lattice) and from the heat kernel action (completely asymmetric lattice). The distinctive feature of the heat kernel model is its relation with two-dimensional QCD on a cylinder; the Wilson model, on the other hand, can be exactly reduced to a twisted one-plaquette model via a procedure of the Eguchi-Kawai type. In the weak coupling regime both models can be related to exactly solvable Kazakov-Migdal matrix models. The instability of the weak coupling solution is due in both cases to a condensation of instantons; in the heat kernel case, it is directly related to the Douglas-Kazakov transition of QCD2. A detailed analysis of these results provides rather accurate predictions of the deconfinement temperature. In spite of the zeroth order approximation they are in good agreement with the Montecarlo simulations in 2+1 dimensions, while in 3+1 dimensions they only agree with the Montecarlo results away from the continuum limit.

String Effects in the Wilson Loop: a high precision numerical test

We test numerically the effective string description of the infrared limit of lattice gauge theories in the confining regime. We consider the 3d Z(2) lattice gauge theory, and we define ratios of Wilson loops such that the predictions of the effective string theory do not contain any adjustable parameters. In this way we are able to obtain a degree of accuracy high enough to show unambiguously that the flux--tube fluctuations are described, in the infrared limit, by an effective bosonic string theory.

Effective actions for finite temperature Lattice Gauge Theories

We consider a lattice gauge theory at finite temperature in ($d$+1) dimensions with the Wilson action and different couplings $β_t$ and $β_s$ for timelike and spacelike plaquettes. By using the character expansion and Schwinger-Dyson type equations we construct, order by order in $β_s$, an effective action for the Polyakov loops which is exact to all orders in $β_t$. As an example we construct the first non-trivial order in $β_s$ for the (3+1) dimensional SU(2) model and use this effective action to extract the deconfinement temperature of the model.

The Spectrum of the 2+1 Dimensional Gauge Ising Model

We present a high precision Monte Carlo study of the spectrum of the $Z_2$ gauge theory in $2+1$ dimensions in the strong coupling phase. Using state of the art Monte Carlo techniques we are able to accurately determine up to three masses in a single channel. We compare our results with the strong coupling expansion for the lightest mass and with results for the universal ratio $σ/m^2$ determined for the $ϕ^4$-theory. Finally the whole spectrum is compared with that obtained from the Isgur-Paton flux tube model and the spectrum of the $2+1$ dimensional $SU(2)$ gauge theory. A remarkable agreement between the Ising and SU(2) spectra (except for the lowest mass state) is found.

On the Universality of Certain Non-Renormalizable Contributions in Two-Dimensional Quantum Field Theory

We consider the question of removing the ultraviolet cutoff in a 2D Quantum Field Theory with an interaction term which is non-renormalizable by power counting. This model arises as the first non-trivial correction beyond the Gaussian approximation of the so called Capillary Wave or Drumhead Model, and is rather important from a physical point of view since it correctly describes the finite size effects of two-dimensional interfaces. Despite the fact that the interaction is non-renormalizable, we prove that for a large class of regularization schemes the finite and divergent parts can be separated in a simple way. Furthermore, the finite part is independent of the choice of cutoff prescription used.
