Strong* convergence of quantum channels

In [arXiv:1712.03219] the existence of a strongly (pointwise) converging sequence of quantum channels that can not be represented as a reduction of a sequence of unitary channels strongly converging to a unitary channel is shown. In this work we give a simple characterization of sequences of quantum channels that have the above representation. The corresponding convergence is called the strong* convergence, since it is related to the convergence of selective Stinespring isometries of quantum channels in the strong* operator topology. Some properties of the strong* convergence of quantum channels are considered. It is shown that for Bosonic Gaussian channels the strong* convergence coincides with the strong convergence.

Uniform finite-dimensional approximation of basic capacities of energy-constrained channels

We consider energy-constrained infinite-dimensional quantum channels from a given system (satisfying a certain condition) to any other systems. We show that dealing with basic capacities of these channels we may assume (accepting arbitrarily small error $\varepsilon$) that all channels have the same finite-dimensional input space -- the subspace corresponding to the $m(\varepsilon)$ minimal eigenvalues of the input Hamiltonian. We also show that for the class of energy-limited channels (mapping energy-bounded states to energy-bounded states) the above result is valid with substantially smaller dimension $m(\varepsilon)$. The uniform finite-dimensional approximation allows to prove the uniform continuity of the basic capacities on the set of all quantum channels with respect to the strong (pointwise) convergence topology. For all the capacities we obtain continuity bounds depending only on the input energy bound and the energy-constrained-diamond-norm distance between quantum channels (generating the strong convergence on the set of quantum channels).

Energy-constrained diamond norms and their use in quantum information theory

We consider the family of energy-constrained diamond norms on the set of Hermitian-preserving linear maps (superoperators) between Banach spaces of trace class operators. We prove that any norm from this family generates the strong (pointwise) convergence on the set of all quantum channels (which is more adequate for describing variations of infinite-dimensional channels than the diamond norm topology). We obtain continuity bounds for information characteristics (in particular, classical capacities) of energy-constrained quantum channels (as functions of a channel) with respect to the energy-constrained diamond norms which imply uniform continuity of these characteristics with respect to the strong convergence topology.

Tight continuity bounds for the quantum conditional mutual information, for the Holevo quantity and for capacities of quantum channels

We start with Fannes' type and Winter's type tight continuity bounds for the quantum conditional mutual information and their specifications for states of special types. Then we analyse continuity of the Holevo quantity with respect to nonequivalent metrics on the set of discrete ensembles of quantum states. We show that the Holevo quantity is continuous on the set of all ensembles of m states with respect to all the metrics if either m or the dimension of underlying Hilbert space is finite and obtain Fannes' type tight continuity bounds for the Holevo quantity in this case. In general case conditions for local continuity of the Holevo quantity for discrete and continuous ensembles are found. Winter's type tight continuity bound for the Holevo quantity under constraint on the average energy of ensembles is obtained and applied to the system of quantum oscillators. The above results are used to obtain tight and close-to-tight continuity bounds for basic capacities of finite-dimensional channels (refining the Leung-Smith continuity bounds).

Lower bounds on distances between a given quantum channel and certain classes of channels

The tight, in a sense, lower estimates of diamond-norm distance from a given quantum channel to the sets of degradable, antidegradable and entanglement-breaking channels are obtained via the tight continuity bounds for quantum mutual information and for relative entropy of entanglement in finite-dimensional case. As an auxiliary result there are established lower bounds of trace-norm distance from a given bipartite state to the set of all separable states.

Upper bounds for the Holevo quantity and their use

We present a family of easily computable upper bounds for the Holevo quantity of ensemble of quantum states depending on a reference state as a free parameter. These upper bounds are obtained by combining probabilistic and metric characteristics of the ensemble. We show that appropriate choice of the reference state gives tight upper bounds for the Holevo quantity which in many cases improve existing estimates in the literature. We also present upper bound for the Holevo quantity of a generalized ensemble of quantum states with finite average energy depending on metric divergence of the ensemble. The specification of this upper bound for the multi-mode quantum oscillator is tight for large energy. The above results are used to obtain tight upper bounds for the Holevo capacity of finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional energy-constrained quantum channels depending on metric characteristics of the channel output.

Lower semicontinuity of the entropic disturbance and its applications in quantum information theory

We prove that for any infinite-dimensional quantum channel the entropic disturbance (defined as difference between the $χ$-quantity of a generalized ensemble and that of the image of the ensemble under the channel) is lower semicontinuous on the natural set of its definition. We establish a number of useful corollaries of this property, in particular, we prove the continuity of the output $χ\textrm{-}$quantity and the existence of $χ$-optimal ensemble for any quantum channel under the energy-type input constraint.

On superactivation of one-shot zero-error quantum capacity and the related property of quantum measurements

We begin with a detailed description of a low dimensional quantum channel ($d_A=4, d_E=3$) demonstrating the symmetric form of superactivation of one-shot zero-error quantum capacity. This means appearance of a noiseless (perfectly reversible) subchannel in the tensor square of a channel having no noiseless subchannels. Then we describe a quantum channel $Φ$ such that $\,\bar{Q}_0(Φ)=0$ and $\,\bar{Q}_0(Φ\otimesΦ)\geq\log n\,$ for any $\,n\leq+\infty$. We also show that the superactivation of one-shot zero-error quantum capacity of a channel can be reformulated in terms of quantum measurements theory as appearance of an indistinguishable subspace for tensor product of two observables having no indistinguishable subspaces.

Continuity bounds for information characteristics of quantum channels depending on input dimension

We show how to use properties of the quantum conditional mutual information to obtain continuity bounds for information characteristics of quantum channels depending on their input dimension. First we prove tight estimates for variation of the output Holevo quantity with respect to simultaneous variations of a channel and of an input ensemble. Then we obtain tight continuity bounds for output conditional mutual information for a single channel and for $n$ copies of a channel. As a result tight and close-to-tight continuity bounds for basic capacities of quantum channels depending on the input dimension are obtained. They complement the Leung-Smith continuity bounds depending on the output dimension.

On discontinuity of information characteristics of quantum systems and channels

Quantitative analysis of discontinuity of basic characteristics of quantum states and channels is presented. First we consider general estimates for discontinuity jump (loss) of the von Neumann entropy for a given converging sequence of states. It is shown, in particular, that for any sequence the loss of entropy is upper bounded by the loss of mean energy (with the coefficient characterizing Hamiltonian of a system). Then we prove that discontinuity jumps of several correlation and entanglement measures in composite quantum systems are upper bounded by loss of one of the marginal entropies (with a corresponding coefficient). We also analyse discontinuity of the output entropy of a quantum operation and of basic information charateristics of a quantum channel with respect to simultaneous variations of an input state and of a channel.

Squashed entanglement in infinite dimensions

We analyse two possible definitions of the squashed entanglement in an infinite-dimensional bipartite system: direct translation of the finite-dimensional definition and its universal extension. It is shown that the both definitions produce the same lower semicontinuous entanglement measure possessing all basis properties of the squashed entanglement on the set of states having at least one finite marginal entropy. Is also shown that the second definition gives an adequate extension of this measure to the set of all states of infinite-dimensional bipartite system. A general condition relating continuity of the squashed entanglement to continuity of the quantum mutual information is proved and its corollaries are considered. Continuity bound for the squashed entanglement under the energy constraint on one subsystem is obtained by using the tight continuity bound for conditional mutual information (proved in the Appendix by using Winter's technique). It is shown that the same continuity bound is valid for the entanglement of formation. As a result the asymptotic continuity of the both entanglement measures under the energy constraint on one subsystem is proved.

Measures of quantum correlations in infinite-dimensional systems

Several important measures of quantum correlations of a state of a finite-dimensional composite system are defined as linear combinations of marginal entropies of this state. This paper is devoted to the infinite-dimensional generalizations of such quantities and to the analysis of their properties. We introduce the notion of faithful extension of a linear combination of marginal entropies and consider several concrete examples starting with the quantum mutual information and the quantum conditional entropy. Then we show that the conditional mutual information can be uniquely defined as a lower semicontinuous function on the set of all states of a tripartite infinite-dimensional system possessing all the basic properties valid in finite dimensions. Infinite-dimensional generalizations of some other measures of quantum correlations in multipartite quantum systems are also considered. It is shown that almost all of these generalized measures are globally lower semicontinuous and possess local continuity properties which essentially simplify their use in analysis of quantum systems. In the second part of the paper we consider applications of the general results of its first part, in particular, to the theory of infinite-dimensional quantum channels and their capacities. We also show the existence of the Fawzi-Renner recovery channel reproducing marginal states for all tripartite states (including states with infinite marginal entropies) starting with the corresponding finite-dimensional result.

On channels with positive quantum zero-error capacity having vanishing n-shot capacity

We show that unbounded number of channel uses may be necessary for perfect transmission of quantum information. For any n we explicitly construct low-dimensional quantum channels ($d_A$=4, $d_E$=2 or 4) whose quantum zero-error capacity is positive but the corresponding n-shot capacity is zero. We give estimates for quantum zero-error capacity of such channels (as a function of n) and show that these channels can be chosen in any small vicinity (in the cb-norm) of a classical-quantum channel. Mathematically, this property means appearance of an ideal (noiseless) subchannel only in sufficiently large tensor power of a channel. Our approach (using special continuous deformation of a maximal commutative *-subalgebra of $M_4$) also gives low-dimensional examples of superactivation of 1-shot quantum zero-error capacity. Finally, we consider multi-dimensional construction which gives channels with greater values of quantum zero-error capacity and vanishing n-shot capacity.

On n-partite superactivation of quantum channel capacities

A generalization of the superactivation of quantum channel capacities to the case of n>2 channels is considered. An explicit example of such superactivation for the 1-shot quantum zero-error capacity is constructed for n=3. Some implications of this example and its reformulation on terms of quantum measurements are described.

Monotonicity of the Holevo quantity: a necessary condition for equality in terms of a channel and its applications

A condition for reversibility (sufficiency) of a channel with respect to a given countable family of states with bounded rank is obtained. This condition shows that a quantum channel preserving the Holevo quantity of at least one (discrete or continuous) ensemble of states with rank $\leq r$ has the r-partially entanglement-breaking complementary channel. Several applications of this result are considered. In particular, it is shown that coincidence of the constrained Holevo capacity and the quantum mutual information of a quantum channel at least at one full rank state implies that this channel is entanglement-breaking.

Reversibility of a quantum channel: general conditions and their applications to Bosonic linear channels

The method of complementary channel for analysis of reversibility (sufficiency) of a quantum channel with respect to families of input states (pure states for the most part) are considered and applied to Bosonic linear (quasi-free) channels, in particular, to Bosonic Gaussian channels. The obtained reversibility conditions for Bosonic linear channels have clear physical interpretation and their sufficiency is also shown by explicit construction of reversing channels. The method of complementary channel gives possibility to prove necessity of these conditions and to describe all reversed families of pure states in the Schrodinger representation. Some applications in quantum information theory are considered. Conditions for existence of discrete classical-quantum subchannels and of completely depolarizing subchannels of a Bosonic linear channel are obtained in the Appendix.

On the entanglement-assisted classical capacity of infinite-dimensional quantum channels

The coding theorem for the entanglement-assisted communication via infinite-dimensional quantum channel with linear constraint is extended to a natural degree of generality. Relations between the entanglement-assisted classical capacity and the $χ$-capacity of constrained channels are obtained and conditions for their coincidence are given. Sufficient conditions for continuity of the entanglement-assisted classical capacity as a function of a channel are obtained. Some applications of the obtained results to analysis of Gaussian channels are considered. A general (continuous) version of the fundamental relation between the coherent information and the measure of privacy of classical information transmission by infinite-dimensional quantum channel is proved.

Reversibility conditions for quantum channels and their applications

A necessary condition for reversibility (sufficiency) of a quantum channel with respect to complete families of states with bounded rank is obtained. A full description (up to isometrical equivalence) of all quantum channels reversible with respect to orthogonal and nonorthogonal complete families of pure states is given. Some applications in quantum information theory are considered. The main results can be formulated in terms of the operator algebras theory (as conditions for reversibility of channels between algebras of all bounded operators).
