Convergence conditions for the quantum relative entropy and other applications of the deneralized quantum Dini lemma

We describe a generalized version of the result called quantum Dini lemma that was used previously for analysis of local continuity of basic correlation and entanglement measures. The generalization consists in considering sequences of functions instead of a single function. It allows us to expand the scope of possible applications of the method. We prove two general dominated convergence theorems and the theorem about preserving local continuity under convex mixtures. By using these theorems we obtain several convergence conditions for the quantum relative entropy and for the mutual information of a quantum channel considered as a function of a pair (channel, input state). A simple convergence criterion for the von Neumann entropy is also obtained.

Continuity of characteristics of composite quantum systems

General methods of quantitative and qualitative continuity analysis of characteristics of composite quantum systems are described. Several modifications of the Alicki-Fannes-Winter method are considered, which make it applicable to a wide class of characteristics in both finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional cases. A new approximation method for obtaining local continuity conditions for various characteristics of quantum systems is proposed and described in detail. This method allows us to prove several general results (Simon-type dominated convergence theorem, the theorem about preserving continuity under convex mixtures, etc.). Uniform continuity bounds and local continuity conditions for basic characteristics of composite quantum systems are presented. Along with the results obtained earlier by different authors, a number of new results proved by the proposed methods are described.

On mutually inverse transforms of functions on a half-line

Two transforms of functions on a half-line are considered. It is proved that their composition gives a concave majorant for every nonnegative function. In particular, this composition is the identity transform on the class of nonnegative concave functions. Applications of this result to some problems of mathematical physics are indicated. Several open questions are formulated.

On quantum states with a finite-dimensional approximation property

We consider a class (convex set) of quantum states containing all finite rank states and infinite rank states with the sufficient rate of decreasing of eigenvalues (in particular, all Gaussian states). Quantum states from this class are characterized by the property (called the FA-property) that allows to obtain several results concerning finite-dimensional approximation of basic entropic and information characteristics of quantum systems and channels. We obtain a simple sufficient condition of the FA-property. We show that this property implies finiteness of the von Neumann entropy, but leave unsolved the question concerning the converse implication. We obtain uniform approximation results for characteristics depending on a pair (channel, input state) and for characteristics depending on a pair (channel, input ensemble). We establish the uniform continuity of the above characteristics as functions of a channel w.r.t. the strong convergence provided that the FA-property holds either for the input state or for the average state of input ensemble.

Uniform continuity bounds for characteristics of multipartite quantum systems

We consider universal methods for obtaining (uniform) continuity bounds for characteristics of multipartite quantum systems. We pay a special attention to infinite-dimensional multipartite quantum systems under the energy constraints. By these methods we obtain continuity bounds for several important characteristics of a multipartite quantum state: the quantum (conditional) mutual information, the squashed entanglement, the c-squashed entanglement and the conditional entanglement of mutual information. The continuity bounds for the multipartite quantum mutual information are asymptotically tight for large dimension/energy. The obtained results are used to prove the asymptotic continuity of the $n$-partite squashed entanglement, c-squashed entanglement and the conditional entanglement of mutual information under the energy constraints.

Operator E-norms and their use

We consider a family of norms (called operator E-norms) on the algebra $B(H)$ of all bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space $H$ induced by a positive densely defined operator $G$ on $H$. Each norm of this family produces the same topology on $B(H)$ depending on $G$. By choosing different generating operator $G$ one can obtain operator E-norms producing different topologies, in particular, the strong operator topology on bounded subsets of $B(H)$. We obtain a generalised version of the Kretschmann-Schlingemann-Werner theorem, which shows continuity of the Stinespring representation of CP linear maps w.r.t. the energy-constrained $cb$-norm (diamond norm) on the set of CP linear maps and the operator E-norm on the set of Stinespring operators. The operator E-norms induced by a positive operator $G$ are well defined for linear operators relatively bounded w.r.t. the operator $\sqrt{G}$ and the linear space of such operators equipped with any of these norms is a Banach space. We obtain explicit relations between the operator E-norms and the standard characteristics of $\sqrt{G}$-bounded operators. The operator E-norms allow to obtain simple upper bounds and continuity bounds for some functions depending on $\sqrt{G}$-bounded operators used in applications.

On quantum channels and operations preserving finiteness of the von Neumann entropy

We describe the class (semigroup) of quantum channels mapping states with finite entropy into states with finite entropy. We show, in particular, that this class is naturally decomposed into three convex subclasses, two of them are closed under concatenations and tensor products. We obtain asymptotically tight universal continuity bounds for the output entropy of two types of quantum channels: channels with finite output entropy and energy-constrained channels preserving finiteness of the entropy.

On lower semicontinuity of the quantum conditional mutual information and its corollaries

It is well known that the quantum mutual information and its conditional version do not increase under local channels. I this paper we show that the recently established lower semicontinuity of the quantum conditional mutual information implies (in fact, is equivalent to) the lower semicontinuity of the loss of the quantum (conditional) mutual information under local channels considered as a function on the Cartesian product of the set of all states of a composite system and the sets of all local channels (equipped with the strong convergence). Some applications of this property are considered. New continuity conditions for the quantum mutual information and for the squashed entanglement in both bipartite and multipartite infinite-dimensional systems are obtained. It is proved, in particular, that the multipartite squashed entanglement of any countably-non-decomposable separable state with finite marginal entropies is equal to zero. Special continuity properties of the information gain of a quantum measurement with and without quantum side information are established that can be treated as robustness (stability) of these quantities w.r.t. perturbation of the measurement and the measured state.

Strong convergence of quantum channels: continuity of the Stinespring dilation and discontinuity of the unitary dilation

We show that a sequence $\{Φ_n\}$ of quantum channels strongly converges to a quantum channel $Φ_0$ if and only if there exist a common environment for all the channels and a corresponding sequence $\{V_n\}$ of Stinespring isometries strongly converging to a Stinespring isometry $V_0$ of the channel $Φ_0$. We also give a quantitative description of the above characterization of the strong convergence in terms of the appropriate metrics on the sets of quantum channels and Stinespring isometries. As a result, the uniform selective continuity of the complementary operation with respect to the strong convergence is established. We show discontinuity of the unitary dilation by constructing a strongly converging sequence of channels which can not be represented as a reduction of a strongly converging sequence of unitary channels. The Stinespring representation of strongly converging sequences of quantum channels allows to prove the lower semicontinuity of the entropic disturbance as a function of a pair (channel, input ensemble). Some corollaries of this property are considered.

Advanced Alicki-Fannes-Winter method for energy-constrained quantum systems and its use

We describe an universal method for quantitative continuity analysis of entropic characteristics of energy-constrained quantum systems and channels. It gives asymptotically tight continuity bounds for basic characteristics of quantum systems of wide class (including multi-mode quantum oscillators) and channels between such systems under the energy constraint. The main application of the proposed method is the advanced version of the uniform finite-dimensional approximation theorem for basic capacities of energy-constrained quantum channels.

On extension of quantum channels and operations to the space of relatively bounded operators

We analyse possibility to extend a quantum operation (sub-unital normal CP linear map on the algebra $B(H)$ of bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space $H$) to the space of all operators on $H$ relatively bounded w.r.t. a given positive unbounded operator. We show that a quantum operation $\,Φ\,$ can be uniquely extended to a bounded linear operator on the Banach space of all $\sqrt{G}$-bounded operators on $H$ provided that the operation $Φ$ is $G$-limited: the predual operation $Φ_*$ maps the set of positive trace class operators $ρ$ with finite $\mathrm{Tr}ρG$ into itself. Assuming that $G$ has discrete spectrum of finite multiplicity we prove that for a wide class of quantum operations the existence of the above extension implies the $G$-limited property. Applications to the theory of Bosonic Gaussian channels are considered.

On completion of the cone of CP linear maps with respect to the energy-constrained diamond norm

For a given positive operator $G$ we consider the cones of linear maps between Banach spaces of trace class operators characterized by the Stinespring-like representation with $\sqrt{G}$-bounded and $\sqrt{G}$-infinitesimal operators correspondingly. We prove the completeness of both cones w.r.t. the energy-constrained diamond norm induced by $G$ (as an energy observable) and the coincidence of the second cone with the completion of the cone of CP linear maps w.r.t. this norm. We show that the sets of quantum channels and quantum operations are complete w.r.t. the energy-constrained diamond norm for any energy observable $G$. Some properties of the maps belonging to the introduced cones are described. In particular, the corresponding generalization of the Kretschmann-Schlingemann-Werner theorem is obtained. We also give a nonconstructive description of the completion of the set of all Hermitian-preserving completely bounded linear maps w.r.t. the ECD norm.

Energy-constrained diamond norms and quantum dynamical semigroups

In the developing theory of infinite-dimensional quantum channels the relevance of the energy-constrained diamond norms was recently corroborated both from physical and information-theoretic points of view. In this paper we study necessary and sufficient conditions for differentiability with respect to these norms of the strongly continuous semigroups of quantum channels (quantum dynamical semigroups). We show that these conditions can be expressed in terms of the generator of the semigroup. We also analyze conditions for representation of a strongly continuous semigroup of quantum channels as an exponential series converging w.r.t. the energy-constrained diamond norm. Examples of semigroups having such a representation are presented.

Relatively bounded operators and the operator E-norms (addition to arXiv:1806.05668)

In this brief note we describe relations between the well known notion of a relatively bounded operator and the operator E-norms considered in [arXiv:1806.05668]. We show that the set of all $\sqrt{G}$-bounded operators equipped with the E-norm induced by a positive operator $G$ is the Banach space of all operators with finite E-norm and that the $\sqrt{G}$-bound is a continuous seminorm on this space. We also show that the set of all $\sqrt{G}$-infinitesimal operators (operators with zero $\sqrt{G}$-bound) equipped with the E-norm induced by a positive operator $G$ is the completion of the algebra $B(H)$ of bounded operators w.r.t. this norm. Some properties of $\sqrt{G}$-infinitesimal operators are considered.

Adaptation of the Alicki-Fannes-Winter method for the set of states with bounded energy and its use

We describe a modification of the Alicki-Fannes-Winter method which allows to prove uniform continuity on the set of quantum states with bounded energy of any locally almost affine function having limited growth with increasing energy. Some applications in quantum information theory are considered. The asymptotic continuity of the relative entropy of entanglement and of its regularization under the energy constraint on one subsystem is proved. Channel-independent continuity bounds for the quantum mutual information at the output of a local channel and for the output Holevo quantity under the input energy constraint are obtained.
