Monte Carlo study of first-order transition in Heisenberg fcc antiferromagnet

Nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a face-centered cubic lattice is studied by extensive Monte Carlo simulations in zero magnetic field. The parallel tempering algorithm is utilized, which allows to overcome a slow relaxation of the magnetic order parameter and fully equilibrate moderate size clusters with up to N ~ 7*10^3 spins. By collecting energy and order parameter histograms on clusters with up to N ~ 2*10^4 sites we accurately locate the first-order transition point at T_c=0.4459(1)J.

Effective quantum dimer model for trimerized kagome antiferromagnet

An effective spin-orbit Hamiltonian is derived for a spin-1/2 trimerized kagome antiferromagnet in the second-order of perturbation theory in the ratio of two coupling constants. Low-energy singlet states of the obtained model are mapped to a quantum dimer model on a triangular lattice. The quantum dimer model is dominated by dimer resonances on a few shortest loops of the triangular lattice. Characteristic energy scale for the dimer model constitutes only a small fraction of the weaker exchange coupling constant.

Magnetocaloric effect in pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd2Ti2O7

An adiabatic demagnetization process is studied in Gd2Ti2O7, a geometrically frustrated antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice. In contrast to conventional paramagnetic salts, this compound can exhibit a temperature decrease by a factor of ten in the temperature range below the Curie-Weiss constant. The most efficient cooling is observed in the field interval between 120 and 60 kOe corresponding to a crossover between saturated and spin-liquid phases. This phenomenon indicates that a considerable part of the magnetic entropy survives in the strongly correlated state. According to the theoretical model, this entropy is associated with a macroscopic number of local modes remaining gapless till the saturation field. Monte Carlo simulations on a classical spin model demonstrate good agreement with the experiment. The cooling power of the process is experimentally estimated with a view to possible technical applications. The results for Gd2Ti2O7 are compared to those for Gd3Ga5O12, a well-known material for low temperature magnetic refrigeration.

Exact low-temperature behavior of kagome antiferromagnet at high fields

Low-energy degrees of freedom of a spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet in the vicinity of the saturation field are mapped to a hard-hexagon model on a triangular lattice. The latter model is exactly solvable. The presented mapping allows to obtain quantitative description of the magnetothermodynamics of a quantum kagome antiferromagnet up to exponentially small corrections as well as predict the critical behavior for the transition into a magnon crystal state. Analogous mapping is presented for the sawtooth chain, which is mapped onto a model of classical hard dimers on a chain.

Magnetocaloric effect in one-dimensional antiferromagnets

An external magnetic field induces large relative changes in the entropy of one-dimensional quantum spin systems at finite temperatures. This leads to a magnetocaloric effect, i.e. a change in temperature during an adiabatic (de)magnetization process. Several examples of one-dimensional spin-1/2 models are studied by employing the Jordan-Wigner transformation and exact diagonalization. During an adiabatic (de)magnetization process temperature drops in the vicinity of a field-induced zero-temperature quantum phase transition. Comparing different levels of frustration, we find that more frustrated systems cool down to lower temperatures. For geometrically frustrated spin models a finite entropy survives down to zero temperature at certain magnetic fields. This property suggests frustrated quantum spin systems as promising alternative refrigerant materials for low-temperature magnetic refrigeration.

Frustrated antiferromagnets at high fields: the Bose-Einstein condensation in degenerate spectra

Quantum phase transition at the saturation field is studied for a class of frustrated quantum antiferromagnets. The considered models include (i) the $J_1$-$J_2$ frustrated square-lattice antiferromagnet with $J_2={1/2}J_1$ and (ii) the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a face centered cubic lattice. In the fully saturated phase the magnon spectra for the two models have lines of degenerate minima. Transition into partially magnetized state is treated via a mapping to a dilute gas of hard core bosons and by complementary spin-wave calculations. Momentum dependence of the exact four-point boson vertex removes the degeneracy of the single-particle excitation spectra and selects the ordering wave-vectors at $(π,π)$ and $(π,0,0)$ for the two models. The asymptotic behavior of the magnetization curve differs significantly from that of conventional antiferromagnet in $d$-spatial dimensions. We predict a unique form for the magnetization curve $ΔM=S-M\simeq μ^{(d-1)/2}(\logμ)^{(d-1)}$, where $μ$ is a distance from the quantum critical point.

Pressure dependence of magnetism in URu2Si2

Neutron-scattering and specific-heat measurements of the heavy-fermion superconductor URu2Si2 under hydrostatic pressure and with Rh-doping [U(Ru{0.98}Rh{0.02})2Si2] show the existence of two magnetic phase transitions. At the second-order phase transition Tm ≈ 17.5 K, a tiny ordered moment is established, while at TM < Tm, a first-order phase transition (under pressure or doping) gives rise to a large moment. The results can be understood in terms of a hidden OP Psi coupled to the ordered moment m, where m and Psi have the same symmetry.

XY checkerboard antiferromagnet in external field

Ordering by thermal fluctuations is studied for the classical XY antiferromagnet on a checkerboard lattice in zero and finite magnetic fields by means of analytical and Monte Carlo methods. The model exhibits a variety of novel broken symmetries including states with nematic ordering in zero field and with triatic order parameter at high fields.

Ginzburg-Landau theory of vortices in a multi-gap superconductor

The Ginzburg-Landau functional for a two-gap superconductor is derived within the weak-coupling BCS model. The two-gap Ginzburg-Landau theory is, then, applied to investigate various magnetic properties of MgB2 including an upturn temperature dependence of the transverse upper critical field and a core structure of an isolated vortex. Orientation of vortex lattice relative to crystallographic axes is studied for magnetic fields parallel to the c-axis. A peculiar 30-degree rotation of the vortex lattice with increasing strength of an applied field observed by neutron scattering is attributed to the multi-gap nature of superconductivity in MgB2.

Modification of the classical Heisenberg helimagnet by weak uniaxial anisotropy and magnetic field

Classical ground state of the isotropic Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian on a primitive Bravais lattice is known to be a single-Q planar spin spiral. A uniaxial anisotropy and external magnetic field distort this structure by generating the higher-order Fourier harmonics at wave-vectors nQ in the spatial spin configuration. These features are not captured in the formalism based on the Luttinger-Tisza theorem, where the classical ground state energy is minimized under the ``weak'' condition on the length of the spins. We discuss why the correct solution is lost in that approach and present an alternative microscopic treatment of the problem. It allows to find the classical ground state for general Q for both easy-axis and easy-plane uniaxial second-order anisotropy, and for any orientation of the magnetic field, by treating the effect of anisotropy (but not the field) as a perturbation to the exchange structure. As a result, the classical ground state energy, the uniform magnetization, and the magnetic Bragg peak intensities that are measured in experiment, are calculated.

Enhanced magnetocaloric effect in frustrated magnets

The magnetothermodynamics of strongly frustrated classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on kagome, garnet, and pyrochlore lattices is examined. The field induced adiabatic temperature change (dT/dH)_S is significantly larger for such systems compared to ordinary non-frustrated magnets and also exceeds the cooling rate of an ideal paramagnet in a wide range of fields. An enhancement of the magnetocaloric effect is related to presence of a macroscopic number of soft modes in frustrated magnets below the saturation field. Theoretical predictions are confirmed with extensive Monte Carlo simulations.

Field induced transitions in a kagome antiferromagnet

The thermal order by disorder effect in magnetic field is studied for a classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice. Using analytical arguments we predict a unique H-T phase diagram for this strongly frustrated magnet: states with a coplanar and a uniaxial triatic order parameters respectively at low and high magnetic fields and an incompressible collinear spin-liquid state at a one-third of the saturation field. We also present the Monte Carlo data which confirm existence of these phases.

Field-Induced Order and Magnetization Plateaux in Frustrated Antiferromagnets

We argue that collinearly ordered states which exist in strongly frustrated spin systems for special rational values of the magnetization are stabilized by thermal as well as quantum fluctuations. These general predictions are tested by Monte Carlo simulations for the classical and Lanczos diagonalization for the S=1/2 frustrated square-lattice antiferromagnet.

Interband proximity effect and nodes of superconducting gap in Sr2RuO4

The power-law temperature dependences of the specific heat, the nuclear relaxation rate, and the thermal conductivity suggest the presence of line nodes in the superconducting gap of Sr2RuO4. These recent experimental observations contradict the scenario of a nodeless (k_x+ik_y)-type superconducting order parameter. We propose that interaction of superconducting order parameters on different sheets of the Fermi surface is a key to understanding the above discrepancy. A full gap exists in the active band, which drives the superconducting instability, while line nodes develop in passive bands by interband proximity effect.

Multiexciton molecules in the hexaborides

We investigate multiexciton bound states in a semiconducting phase of divalent hexaborides. Due to three degenerate valleys in both the conduction and valence bands the binding energy of a 6-exciton molecule is greatly enhanced by the shell effect. The ground state energies of multiexciton molecules are calculated using the density functional formalism. We also show that charged impurities stabilize multiexciton complexes leading to condensation of localized excitons. These complexes can act as nucleation centers of local moments.

Field induced ordering in highly frustrated antiferromagnets

We predict that an external field can induce a spin order in highly frustrated classical Heisenberg magnets. We find analytically stabilization of collinear states by thermal fluctuations at a one-third of the saturation field for kagome and garnet lattices and at a half of the saturation field for pyrochlore and frustrated square lattices. This effect is studied numerically for the frustrated square-lattice antiferromagnet by Monte Carlo simulations for classical spins and by exact diagonalization for $S=1/2$. The field induced collinear states have a spin gap and produce magnetization plateaus.

In this comment we point out several misleading conclusions reached by Rodriguez et al. [PRL 84, 3903 (2000) and cond-mat/0003201] about the details of the band structure in SrB_6 and their role in interpreting the high-temperature weak ferromagnetism, which develops in this material upon doping.

Electron-hole liquid in the hexaborides

We investigate the energetics of the electron-hole liquid in stoichiometric divalent metal hexaborides. The ground state energy of an electron-hole plasma is calculated using RPA and Hubbard schemes and compared to the binding energy of a single exciton. Intervalley scattering processes play an important role in increasing this binding energy and stabilizing a dilute Bose gas of excitons.
