Field-induced decay dynamics in square-lattice antiferromagnet

Dynamical properties of the square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet in applied magnetic field are studied for arbitrary value S of the spin. Above the threshold field for two-particle decays, the standard spin-wave theory yields singular corrections to the excitation spectrum with logarithmic divergences for certain momenta. We develop a self-consistent approximation applicable for S >= 1, which avoids such singularities and provides regularized magnon decay rates. Results for the dynamical structure factor obtained in this approach are presented for S = 1 and S = 5/2.

Interplay of anisotropy and frustration: triple transitions in a triangular-lattice antiferromagnet

The classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice with the single-ion anisotropy of the easy-axis type is theoretically investigated. The mean-field phase diagram in an external magnetic field is constructed. Three finite-temperature Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions are found by the Monte Carlo simulations in zero field. The two upper transitions are related to the breaking of the discrete ${\mathbb Z}_{6}$ symmetry group, while the lowest transition is associated with a quasi-long-range ordering of transverse components. The intermediate collinear phase between first and second transitions is the sliding phase predicted by J. V. José {\it et al}. [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 16}, 1217 (1977)].

Hydrodynamic relation in 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a field

The spin-stiffness ρ_s of a 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnet depends non-analytically on external magnetic field. We demonstrate that the hydrodynamic relation between ρ_s, the uniform susceptibility χ, and the spin-wave velocity $c$ is not violated by such a behavior because similar non-analytic terms from all three quantities mutually cancel out. In this work, explicit expressions for the field-dependent spin stiffness and for the magnon velocity of the 2D square lattice antiferromagnet are obtained by direct calculation to order 1/S and in the whole range of magnetic fields.

Magneto-thermal properties of the spin-s Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the cuboctahedron

We use the example of the cuboctahedron, a highly frustrated molecule with 12 sites, to study the approach to the classical limit. We compute magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and magnetic cooling rate at high magnetic fields and low temperatures for different spin quantum numbers s. Remarkably big deviations of these quantities from their classical counterparts are observed even for values of s which are usually considered to be almost classical.

Octupolar ordering of classical kagome antiferromagnets in two and three dimensions

Classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on two-dimensional kagome and three-dimensional hyperkagome lattices are investigated by Monte Carlo simulations. For both models the symmetry-breaking states at low temperatures are described by non-zero octupole moments or third-rank spin tensor order parameters. In the case of the two-dimensional kagome antiferromagnet, a sharp crossover into a coplanar state takes place at T_k ~ 0.004J, which we attribute to proliferation of fractional vortices. The three-dimensional model exhibits a first-order transition at T_c ~ 0.002J into a phase with critical spin correlations, which possesses a long-range order of octupole moments.

Magnetic excitations in dipolar pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$

The spin dynamics in the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet $\rm Gd_2Sn_2O_7$ is studied by means of the electron spin resonance. In the ordered phase ($T_N = 1$ K), we have detected three gapped resonance modes. Their values agree well with the developed spin-wave theory which takes into account the Heisenberg nearest-neighbor exchange, the single-ion anisotropy and the long-range dipolar interactions. The theory also predicts a fourth lowest-frequency gap, which lies beyond the experimental range of frequencies, but determines the exponential decrease of the specific heat at low temperature.

Quantum fluctuations in high field magnetization of 2D square lattice J1-J2 antiferromagnets

The J1-J2 square lattice Heisenberg model with spin S=1/2 has three phases with long-range magnetic order and two unconventionally ordered phases depending on the ratio of exchange constants. It describes a number of recently found layered vanadium oxide compounds. A simple means of investigating the ground state is the study of the magnetization curve and high-field susceptibility. We discuss these quantities by using the spin-wave theory and the exact diagonalization in the whole J1-J2 plane. We compare both results and find good overall agreement in the sectors of the phase diagram with magnetic order. Close to the disordered regions the magnetization curve shows strong deviations from the classical linear behaviour caused by large quantum fluctuations and spin-wave approximation breaks down. On the FM side (J1<0) where one approaches the quantum gapless spin nematic ground state this region is surprisingly large. We find that inclusion of second order spin-wave corrections does not lead to fundamental improvement. Quantum corrections to the tilting angle of the ordered moments are also calculated. They may have both signs, contrary to the always negative first order quantum corrections to the magnetization. Finally we investigate the effect of the interlayer coupling and find that the quasi-2D picture remains valid up to |J_\perp/J1| ~ 0.3.

Lattice gas description of pyrochlore and checkerboard antiferromagnets in a strong magnetic field

Quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on pyrochlore and checkerboard lattices in a strong external magnetic field are mapped onto hard-core lattice gases with an extended exclusion region. The effective models are studied by the exchange Monte Carlo simulations and by the transfer matrix method. The transition point and the critical exponents are obtained numerically for a square-lattice gas of particles with the second-neighbor exclusion, which describes a checkerboard antiferromagnet. The exact structure of the magnon crystal state is determined for a pyrochlore antiferromagnet.

Magnon Decay in Noncollinear Quantum Antiferromagnets

Instability of the excitation spectrum of an ordered noncollinear Heisenberg antiferromagnet (AF) with respect to spontaneous two-magnon decays is investigated. We use a spin-1/2 AF on a triangular lattice as an example and examine the characteristic long- and short wave-length features of its zero-temperature spectrum within the 1/S-approximation. The kinematic conditions are shown to be crucial for the existence of decays and for overall properties of the spectrum. The XXZ and the J-J' generalizations of the model, as well as the role of higher-order corrections are discussed.

Magnetic resonance in a pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd2Ti2O7

Electron spin resonance study of frustrated pyrochlore Gd2Ti2O7 is performed in a wide frequency band for a temperature range 0.4-30 K, which covers paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases. The paramagnetic resonance reveals the spectroscopic g-factor about 2.0 and a temperature dependent linewidth. In ordered phases magnetic resonance spectra are distinctive for a nonplanar cubic (or tetrahedral) antiferromagnet with an isotropic susceptibility. In the high-field saturated phase, weakly-dispersive soft modes are observed and their field evolution is traced.

Distorted vortex lattice in a tetrahedral superconductor

Equilibrium shape and orientation of vortex lattice are studied for an s-wave tetrahedral superconductor in the vicinity of the upper critical field. The phase diagram, which includes transitions between rhombic and rectangular lattices, is constructed in the parameter space of the Ginzburg-Landau functional. The developed theory is applied to the heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$. In a wide range of parameters the shape of the vortex lattice is only weakly dependent on temperature. The neutron scattering measurements of the vortex lattice in PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ can be explained by a peculiarities of the tetrahedral symmetry group and are further supported by analysis of the appropriate band structure calculations.

Magnetic ordering in Gd2Sn2O7: the archetypal Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet

Low-temperature powder neutron diffraction measurements are performed in the ordered magnetic state of the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd2Sn2O7. Symmetry analysis of the diffraction data indicates that this compound has the ground state predicted theoretically for a Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet with dipolar interactions. The difference in magnetic structures of Gd2Sn2O7 and of nominally analogous Gd2Ti2O7 is found to be determined by a specific type of third-neighbor superexchange interaction on the pyrochlore lattice between spins across empty hexagons.

Decay of quasiparticles in quantum spin liquids

Magnetic excitations are studied in gapped quantum spin systems, for which spontaneous two-magnon decays are allowed by symmetry. Interaction between one- and two-particle states acquires nonanalytic frequency and momentum dependence near the boundary of two-magnon continuum. This leads to a termination point of single-particle branch for one-dimensional systems and to strong suppression of quasiparticle weight in two dimensions. The momentum dependence of the decay rate is calculated in arbitrary dimensions and effect of external magnetic field is discussed.

Interplay between SDW and induced local moments in URu2Si2

Theoretical model for magnetic ordering in the heavy-fermion metal URu2Si2 is suggested. The 17.5K transition in this material is ascribed to formation of a spin-density wave, which develops due to a partial nesting between electron and hole parts of the Fermi surface and has a negligibly small form-factor. Staggered field in the SDW state induces tiny antiferromagnetic order in the subsystem of localized singlet-singlet levels. Unlike the other models our scenario is based on coexistence of two orderings with the same antiferromagnetic dipole symmetry. The topology of the pressure phase diagram for such a two order parameter model is studied in the framework of the Landau theory. The field dependences of the staggered magnetization and the magnon gap are derived from the microscopic theory and found to be in good quantitative agreement with experiment.

Single-ion anisotropy in the gadolinium pyrochlores studied by an electron paramagnetic resonance

The electron paramagnetic resonance is used to measure the single-ion anisotropy of Gd3+ ions in the pyrochlore structure of (Y{1-x}Gdx)2Ti2O7. A rather strong easy-plane type anisotropy is found. The anisotropy constant D is comparable to the exchange integral J in the prototype Gd2Ti2O7, D~0.75J and exceeds the dipolar energy scale. Physical implications of an easy-plane anisotropy for a pyrochlore antiferromagnet are considered. We calculate the magnetization curves at T=0 and discuss phase transitions in magnetic field.

High field properties of geometrically frustrated magnets

Above the saturation field, geometrically frustrated quantum antiferromagnets have dispersionless low-energy branches of excitations corresponding to localized spin-flip modes. Transition into a partially magnetized state occurs via condensation of an infinite number of degrees of freedom. The ground state below the phase transition is a magnon crystal, which breaks only translational symmetry and preserves spin-rotations about the field direction. We give a detailed review of recent works on physics of such phase transitions and present further theoretical developments. Specifically, the low-energy degrees of freedom of a spin-1/2 kagomé antiferromagnet are mapped to a hard hexagon gas on a triangular lattice. Such a mapping allows to obtain a quantitative description of the magnetothermodynamics of a quantum kagomé antiferromagnet from the exact solution for a hard hexagon gas. In particular, we find the exact critical behavior at the transition into a magnon crystal state, the universal value of the entropy at the saturation field, and the position of peaks in temperature- and field-dependence of the specific heat. Analogous mapping is presented for the sawtooth chain, which is mapped onto a model of classical hard dimers on a chain. The finite macroscopic entropies of geometrically frustrated magnets at the saturation field lead to a large magnetocaloric effect.

Anisotropy of the upper critical field in MgB2: the two-gap Ginzburg-Landau theory

The upper critical field in MgB2 is investigated in the framework of the two-gap Ginzburg-Landau theory. A variational solution of linearized Ginzburg-Landau equations agrees well with the Landau level expansion and demonstrates that spatial distributions of the gap functions are different in the two bands and change with temperature. The temperature variation of the ratio of two gaps is responsible for the upward temperature dependence of in-plane Hc2 as well as for the deviation of its out-of-plane behavior from the standard angular dependence. The hexagonal in-plane modulations of Hc2 can change sign with decreasing temperature.
