Two-level Physics in a Model Metallic Break Junction

We consider a model inspired by a metal break-junction hypothetically caught at its breaking point, where the non-adiabatic center-of-mass motion of the bridging atom can be treated as a two-level system. By means of Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) we calculate the influence of the two level system on the ballistic conductance across the bridge atom. The results are shown to be fully consistent with a conformal field theory treatment. We find that the conductance, calculated by coupling Fermi liquid theory to our NRG is always finite and fractional at zero temperature, but drops quite fast as the temperature increases.

Gutzwiller scheme for electrons and phonons: the half-filled Hubbard-Holstein model

We analyze the ground-state properties of strongly-correlated electrons coupled with phonons by means of a generalized Gutzwiller wavefunction which includes phononic degrees of freedom. We study in detail the paramagnetic half-filled Hubbard-Holstein model, where the electron-electron interaction can lead to a Mott transition, and the electron-phonon coupling to a bipolaronic transition. We critically discuss the quality of the proposed wavefunction in describing the various transitions and crossovers that occur as a function of the parameters. Previous variational attempts are recovered as particular choices of the wavefunction, while keeping all the variational freedom allows to access regions of the phase diagram otherwise inaccessible within previous variational approaches.

Strong Correlations in a nutshell

We present the phase diagram of clusters made of two, three and four coupled Anderson impurities. All three clusters share qualitatively similar phase diagrams that include Kondo screened and unscreened regimes separated by almost critical crossover regions reflecting the proximity to barely avoided critical points. This suggests the emergence of universal paradigms that apply to clusters of arbitrary size. We discuss how these crossover regions of the impurity models might affect the approach to the Mott transition within a cluster extension of dynamical mean field theory.

Extended Gutzwiller wavefunction for the Hubbard-Holstein model

We introduce a new type of Gutzwiller variational wavefunction for correlated electrons coupled to phonons, able to treat on equal footing electronic and lattice degrees of freedom. We benchmark the wavefunction in the infinite-$U$ Hubbard-Holstein model away from half-filling on a Bethe lattice, where we can directly compare with exact results by Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. For this model, we find that variational results agree perfectly well with the exact ones. In particular the wavefunction correctly describes the crossover to a heavy polaron gas upon increasing the electron-phonon coupling.

Surprises in the phase diagram of an Anderson impurity model for a single C$_{60}^{n-}$ molecule

We find by Wilson numerical renormalization group and conformal field theory that a three-orbital Anderson impurity model for a C$_{60}^{n-}$ molecule has a very rich phase diagram which includes non-Fermi-liquid stable and unstable fixed points with interesting properties, most notably high sensitivity to doping $n$. We discuss the implications of our results to the conductance behavior of C$_{60}$-based single-molecule transistor devices.

Strongly Correlated Superconductivity and Pseudogap Phase near a multi-band Mott Insulator

Near a Mott transition, strong electron correlations may enhance Cooper pairing. This is demonstrated in the Dynamical Mean Field Theory solution of a twofold-orbital degenerate Hubbard model with inverted Hund's rules on-site exchange, which favors local spin-singlet configurations. Close to the Mott insulator, which is a local version of a valence bond insulator, a pseudogap non-Fermi-liquid metal, a superconductor, and a normal metal appear, in striking similarity with the physics of the cuprates. The strongly correlated superconducting state has a larger Drude weight than the corresponding normal state. The role of the impurity Kondo problem is underscored.

Ordered phases of XXZ-symmetric spin-1/2 zigzag ladder

Using bosonization approach, we derive an effective low-energy theory for XXZ-symmetric spin-1/2 zigzag ladders and discuss its phase diagram by a variational approach. A spin nematic phase emerges in a wide part of the phase diagram, either critical or massive. Possible crossovers between the spontaneously dimerized and spin nematic phases are discussed, and the topological excitations in all phases identified.

Increasing d-wave superconductivity by on site repulsion

We study by Variational Monte Carlo an extended Hubbard model away from half filled band density which contains two competing nearest-neighbor interactions: a superexchange $J$ favoring d-wave superconductivity and a repulsion $V$ opposing against it. We find that the on-site repulsion $U$ effectively enhances the strength of $J$ meanwhile suppressing that of $V$, thus favoring superconductivity. This result shows that attractions which do not involve charge fluctuations are very well equipped against strong electron-electron repulsion so much to get advantage from it.

Strongly Correlated Superconductivity

High temperature superconductivity in doped Mott insulators such as the cuprates contradicts the conventional wisdom that electron repulsion is detrimental to superconductivity. Because doped fullerene conductors are also strongly correlated, the recent discovery of high-critical-temperature, presumably s-wave, superconductivity in C$_{60}$ field effect devices is even more puzzling. We examine a dynamical-mean-field solution of a model for electron doped fullerenes which shows how strong correlations can indeed enhance superconductivity close to the Mott transition. We argue that the mechanism responsible for this enhancement could be common to a wider class of strongly correlated models, including those for cuprate superconductors.

Quantum criticalities in a two-leg antiferromagnetic S=1/2 ladder induced by a staggered magnetic field

We study a two-leg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladder in the presence of a staggered magnetic field. We consider two parameter regimes: strong (weak) coupling along the legs and weak (strong) coupling along the rungs. In both cases, the staggered field drives the Haldane spin-liquid phase of the ladder towards a Gaussian quantum criticality. In a generalized spin ladder with a non-Haldane, spontaneously dimerized phase, the staggered magnetic field induces an Ising quantum critical regime. In the vicinity of the critical lines, we derive low-energy effective field theories and use these descriptions to determine the dynamical response functions, the staggered spin susceptibility and the string order parameter.

Direct Transition Between a Singlet Mott Insulator and a Superconductor

We argue that a normal Fermi liquid and a singlet, spin gapped Mott insulator cannot be continuously connected, and that some intermediate phase must intrude between them. By explicitly working out a case study where the singlet insulator is stabilized by orbital degeneracy and an inverted Hund's rule coupling, mimicking a Jahn-Teller effect, we find that the intermediate phase is a superconductor.

Critical properties of the double-frequency sine-Gordon model with applications

We study the properties of the double-frequency sine--Gordon model in the vicinity of the Ising quantum phase transition displayed by this model. Using a mapping onto a generalised lattice quantum Ashkin-Teller model, we obtain critical and nearly-off-critical correlation functions of various operators. We discuss applications of the double-sine-Gordon model to one-dimensional physical systems, like spin chains in a staggered external field and interacting electrons in a staggered potential.

Theory of the Metal-Paramagnetic Mott-Jahn-Teller Insulator Transition in A_4C_{60}

We study the unconventional insulating state in A_4C_{60} with a variety of approaches, including density functional calculations and dynamical mean-field theory. While the former predicts a metallic state, in disagreement with experiment, the latter yields a (paramagnetic) Mott-Jahn-Teller insulator. In that state, conduction between molecules is blocked by on-site Coulomb repulsion, magnetism is suppressed by intra-molecular Jahn-Teller effect, and important excitations (such as optical and spin gap) should be essentially intra-molecular. Experimental gaps of 0.5 eV and 0.1 eV respectively compare well with molecular ion values, in agreement with this picture.

Phase diagram of doped spin-Peierls systems

The phase diagram of a model describing doped CuGeO$_3$ is derived. The model emphasizes the role of local moments released by the impurities and randomly distributed inside the gaped singlet background. The phase diagram is investigated by two methods: (i) in a mean field treatment of the interchain coupling and (ii) in a real space decimation procedure in a two dimensional model of randomly distributed moments. Both methods lead to similar results, in a qualitative agreement with experiments. In particular, a transition to an inhomogeneous Néel phase is obtained for arbitrary small doping. From the decimation procedure, we interpret this phase at very low doping as a {\sl Griffith antiferromagnet}. Namely, it does not have a true long range order down to zero temperature. Nonetheless, large magnetically ordered clusters appear already at relatively high temperatures. This demonstrates the role of disorder in the theoretical description of doping in CuGeO$_3$. A detailed comparison with other approaches is also given.

Statistical properties of localisation--delocalisation transition in one dimension

We study a one-dimensional model of disordered electrons (also relevant for random spin chains), which exhibits a delocalisation transition at half-filling. Exact probability distribution functions for the Wigner time and transmission coefficient are calculated. We identify and distinguish those features of probability densities that are due to rare, trapping configurations of the random potential from those which are due to the proximity to the delocalisation transition.

A single chain analysis of doped quasi one dimensional spin 1 compounds: paramagnetic versus spin 1/2 doping

We present a numerical study of single chain models of doped spin 1 compounds. We use low energy effective one-dimensional models for both the cases of paramagnetic and spin-1/2 doping. In the case of paramagnetic doping, the effective model is equivalent to the bond disordered spin-1/2 chain model recently analyzed by means of real space renormalization group by Hyman and Yang. By means of exact diagonalizations in the XX limit, we confirm the stability of the Haldane phase for weak disorder. Above a critical amount of disorder, the effective model flows to the so called random singlet fixed point. In the case of spin-1/2 doping, we argue that the Haldane phase should be destabilized even for weak disorder. This picture is not in contradiction with existing experimental data. We also discuss the possible occurrence of (unobserved) antiferromagnetically ordered phases.

Random Mass Dirac Fermions in Doped Spin-Peierls and Spin-Ladder systems: One-Particle Properties and Boundary Effects

Quasi-one-dimensional spin-Peierls and spin-ladder systems are characterized by a gap in the spin-excitation spectrum, which can be modeled at low energies by that of Dirac fermions with a mass. In the presence of disorder these systems can still be described by a Dirac fermion model, but with a random mass. Some peculiar properties, like the Dyson singularity in the density of states, are well known and attributed to creation of low-energy states due to the disorder. We take one step further and study single-particle correlations by means of Berezinskii's diagram technique. We find that, at low energy $ε$, the single-particle Green function decays in real space like $G(x,ε) \propto (1/x)^{3/2}$. It follows that at these energies the correlations in the disordered system are strong -- even stronger than in the pure system without the gap. Additionally, we study the effects of boundaries on the local density of states. We find that the latter is logarithmically (in the energy) enhanced close to the boundary. This enhancement decays into the bulk as $1/\sqrt{x}$ and the density of states saturates to its bulk value on the scale $L_ε\propto \ln^2 (1/ε)$. This scale is different from the Thouless localization length $λ_ε\propto\ln (1/ε)$. We also discuss some implications of these results for the spin systems and their relation to the investigations based on real-space renormalization group approach.

Enhanced magnetic fluctuations in doped spin-Peierls systems: a single-chain model analysis

We analyze by means of real space Renormalization Group (RG) as well as by exact diagonalizations the properties of a single-chain model of a doped spin-Peierls system, where a major role is played by the localized moments created by the impurities. We are able to follow analytically the RG flow, which allows us to determine the relevant cross-over temperatures. In particular, we find an enhancement of magnetic correlations due to disorder, coexisting with an underlying dimerization, in an intermediate temperature range below the spin-Peierls critical temperature and above the coherence temperature of a regular array built by those localized moments (so-called soliton bandwidth). The possible relevance of these results to the doped inorganic spin-Peierls compound CuGeO$_3$ is discussed.
