Coexistence of antiferromagnetism and dimerization in a disordered spin-Peierls model: exact results

A model of disordered spin-Peierls system is considered, where domain walls are randomly distributed as a telegraph noise. For this realization of the disorder in an XX spin chain, we calculate exactly the density of states as well as several thermodynamic quantities. The resulting physical behavior should be qualitatively unchanged even for an XXZ chain, up to the isotropic XXX point. For weak disorder, besides a high energy regime where the behavior of a pure spin-Peierls system is recovered, there is a cross-over to a low energy regime with singular thermodynamic properties and enhanced antiferromagnetic fluctuations. These regimes are analyzed with the help of exact results, and the relevant energy scales determined. We discuss the possible relevance of such a disorder realization to the doped inorganic spin-Peierls compound CuGeO$_3$.

Electron-phonon coupling close to a metal-insulator transition in one dimension

We consider a one-dimensional system of electrons interacting via a short-range repulsion and coupled to phonons close to the metal-insulator transition at half filling. We argue that the metal-insulator transition can be described as a standard one dimensional incommensurate to commensurate transition, even if the electronic system is coupled to the lattice distortion. By making use of known results for this transition, we prove that low-momentum phonons do not play any relevant role close to half-filling, unless their coupling to the electrons is large in comparison with the other energy scales present in the problem. In other words the effective strength of the low-momentum transferred electron-phonon coupling does not increase close to the metal-insulator transition, even though the effective velocity of the mobile carriers is strongly diminished.

Interacting one dimensional electron gas with open boundaries

We discuss the properties of interacting electrons on a finite chain with open boundary conditions. We extend the Haldane Luttinger liquid description to these systems and study how the presence of the boundaries modifies various correlation functions. In view of possible experimental applications to quantum wires, we analyse how tunneling measurements can reveal the underlying Luttinger liquid properties. The two terminal conductance is calculated. We also point out possible applications to quasi one dimensional materials and study the effects of magnetic impurities.

Anderson-Yuval approach to the multichannel Kondo problem

We analyze the structure of the perturbation expansion of the general multichannel Kondo model with channel anisotropic exchange couplings and in the presence of an external magnetic field, generalizing to this case the Anderson-Yuval technique. For two channels, we are able to map the Kondo model onto a generalized resonant level model. Limiting cases in which the equivalent resonant level model is solvable are identified. The solution correctly captures the properties of the two channel Kondo model, and also allows an analytic description of the cross-over from the non Fermi liquid to the Fermi liquid behavior caused by the channel anisotropy.

Toulouse limit for the overscreened four-channel Kondo problem

We show that the spin dynamics of the 4--channel Kondo model is equivalent to the one of a model with a spin 1/2 impurity coupled to spin 1 conduction electrons. By abelian bosonization of the latter model we find a kind of Toulouse limit analogous to that recently discussed by Emery and Kivelson for the 2--channel case. We analyse the model by exploiting the close analogy to the problem of an impurity in the Luttinger liquid.

Spin-Charge separation in a model of two coupled chains

A model of interacting electrons living on two chains coupled by a transverse hopping $t_\perp$, is solved exactly by bosonization technique. It is shown that $t_\perp$ does modify the shape of the Fermi surface also in presence of interaction, although charge and spin excitations keep different velocities $u_ρ$, $u_σ$. Two different regimes occur: at short distances, $x\ll ξ= (u_ρ- u_σ)/4t_\perp$, the two chain model is not sensitive to $t_\perp$, while for larger separation $x\gg ξ$ inter--chain hopping is relevant and generates further singularities in the electron Green function besides those due to spin-charge decoupling.
