Light-weight sodium alanate thin films grown by reactive sputtering

We report the preparation of sodium alanate, a promising hydrogen storage material, in a thin film form using co-sputtering in a reactive atmosphere of atomic hydrogen. We study the phase formation and distribution, and the hydrogen desorption, with a combination of optical and infrared transmission spectroscopy. We show that the hydrogen desorption, the phase segregation and the role of the dopants in these complex metal hydrides can be monitored with optical measurements. This result shows that a thin film approach can be used for a model study of technologically relevant lightweight metal hydrides.

Local structure of REFeAsO (RE=La, Pr, Nd, Sm) oxypnictides studied by Fe K-edge EXAFS

Local structure of REOFeAs (RE=La, Pr, Nd, Sm) system has been studied as a function of chemical pressure varied due to different rare-earth size. Fe K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements in the fluorescence mode has permitted to compare systematically the inter-atomic distances and their mean square relative displacements (MSRD). We find that the Fe-As bond length and the corresponding MSRD hardly show any change, suggesting the strongly covalent nature of this bond, while the Fe-Fe and Fe-RE bond lengths decrease with decreasing rare earth size. The results provide important information on the atomic correlations that could have direct implication on the superconductivity and magnetism of REOFeAs system, with the chemical pressure being a key ingredient.

Temperature and fluence dependence of ultrafast phase separation dynamics in Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 thin films

Temperature and fluence dependence of the transient photoinduced reflectivity and the magnetooptical Kerr angle was measured in two Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 thin films subject to tensile and compressive substrate-induced strain. A photoinduced transient ferromagnetic metallic (TFM) phase is found to form below ~60K and ~40K in the substrate-strained and substrate-compressed film, respectively. From the hysteresis loops a difference in the TFM cluster sizes and amount of photomodulation is observed at low temperatures and low excitation fluences in the films with different strain. Surprisingly, the characteristic timescale for the TFM phase photomodulation is virtually strain independent. At high excitation fluences, the cluster sizes and amount of photomodulation are independent on the substrate-induced strain.

Isotope effect on the E2g phonon and mesoscopic phase separation near the electronic topological transition in Mg1-xAlxB2

We report the boron isotope effect on the E2g phonon mode by micro-Raman spectroscopy on the ternary Mg1-xAlxB2 system, synthesized with pure isotopes 10B and 11B. The isotope coefficient on the phonon frequency is near 0.5 in the full range decreasing near x = 0. The intraband electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling, for the electrons in the sigma band, has been extracted from the E2g line-width and frequency softening. Tuning the Fermi energy near the electronic topological transition (ETT), where the sigma Fermi surface changes from 2D to 3D topology the E2g mode, shows the known Kohn anomaly on the 2D side of the ETT and a splitting of the E2g phonon frequency into a hard and soft component from x = 0 to x = 0.28. The results suggest a minor role of the intraband phonon mediated pairing in the control of the high critical temperature in Mg1-xAlxB2. The common physical features of diborides with the novel multigap FeAs-based superconductors and cuprates is discussed.

Ultrafast photoinduced phase separation dynamics in Pr(0.6)Ca(0.4)MnO(3) thin films

The time resolved Magnetooptical Kerr effect in the substrate-strain-induced insulating ferromagnetic phase in (Pr$_{0.6}$Ca$_{0.4}$)MnO$_3$ thin films on two different substrates was measured in a magnetic field up to 1.1T. The photoinduced Kerr rotation and ellipticity show remarkably different magnetic-field dependence. From the comparison of the magnetic field dependencies of the photoinduced and static Kerr rotation and ellipticity we conclude that a transient ferromagnetic metallic phase, embedded within the insulating ferromagnetic phase, is created upon the photoexcitation at low temperatures. A comparison of temporal dependence of the photoinduced Kerr signals with the photoinduced reflectivity indicates the change of the fractions of the phases takes place on a timescale of ten picoseconds independent of the substrate.

Two insulating phases in compressed Pr1-xCaxMnO3 thin films

The temperature dependent resistivity of two Pr1-xCaxMnO3 (x=0.5 and 0.4) thin films grown on LaAlO3 has been studied as a function of hydrostatic pressure (up to 2.5 GPa) and magnetic field (up to 9T). Both samples show a monotonic decrease in the resistivity with an increase in pressure, corresponding to a change of -35% at 2.5 GPa. No pressure induced metal-to-insulator transition was observed in the temperature-dependent resistivity. The non-trivial interaction between high pressure and magnetic field reveals that the effect of pressure cannot be simply rescaled to that of a specific field, as has been reported for the corresponding bulk material. We propose an interpretation of the data based on phase separation, where two different insulating phases coexist: the charge ordered phase, which is sensitive to both magnetic field and pressure, and a second insulating phase that can be tuned by magnetic field. Such a result demonstrates that phase separation can be manipulated in thin films by independent application of magnetic field and/or external pressure.

Magnetic properties of the insulating ferromagnetic phase in strained Pr_0.6Ca_0.4MnO_3 thin films

Bulk magnetization in Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_3 thin films with tensile (SrTiO_3) and compressive (LaAlO_3) substrate-induced strain is compared to the magnetooptical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements. In the absence of an external magnetic field, in both films, a stable ferromagnetic insulating majority phase coexists with an antiferromagnetic insulating phase below ~120K. MOKE measurements indicate that at 5K a metastable ferromagnetic metallic (FM) phase is formed at the surface of the stretched film in a magnetic field below 1.1T already, while in the bulk the FM phase starts to form in the field above ~4T in both films.

Interfacial contribution to the dielectric response in semiconducting LaBiMn4/3Co2/3O6

Impedance measurements have been performed on a sintered polycrystalline sample of the perovskite LaBiMn4/3Co2/3O6. Colossal dielectric permittivity often is measured in this class of semiconducting materials as a result of extrinsic factors. Our results show that a large offset in the capacitance, measured on a series of samples with different thickness, is due to the interfacial polarization. This contribution then can be removed from the data, creating a general procedure for dielectric measurements in semiconducting samples.

Ferromagnetism and magneto-dielectric effect in insulating LaBiMn4/3Co2/3O6 thin films

High quality epitaxial thin films of LaBiMn4/3Co2/3O6 perovskite were fabricated on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates by the pulsed laser deposition technique. Magnetization measurements reveal a strong magnetic anisotropy and a ferromagnetic behavior that is in agreement with a super-exchange interaction between Mn4+ and Co2+ ions, which are randomly distributed in the B-site. A distinct anomaly is observed in the dielectric measurements at 130K corresponding to the onset of the magnetic ordering, suggesting a coupling. Above this temperature, the extrinsic Maxwell-Wagner effect is dominating. Theses results are explained using the Raman spectroscopic studies indicating a weak spin-lattice interaction around this magnetic transition.

Sc substitution for Mg in MgB2: effects on Tc and Kohn anomaly

Here we report synthesis and characterization of Mg_{1-x}Sc_{x}B_{2} (0.12 T_{c}>6 K. We find that the Sc doping moves the chemical potential through the 2D/3D electronic topological transition (ETT) in the sigma band where the ``shape resonance" of interband pairing occurs. In the 3D regime beyond the ETT we observe a hardening of the E_{2g} Raman mode with a significant line-width narrowing due to suppression of the Kohn anomaly over the range 0<q<2k_{F}.

Early-type Galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field. The -r_e relation and the lack of large galaxies at high redshift

We present the results of the detailed surface photometry of a sample of early-type galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field. Effective radii, surface brightnesses and total V_606 magnitudes have been obtained, as well as U_300, B_450, I_814, J, H and K colors, which are compared with the predictions of chemical-spectrophotometric models of population synthesis. Spectroscopic redshifts are available for 23 objects. For other 25 photometric redshifts are given. In the -r_e plane the early-type galaxies of the HDF, once the appropriate K+E corrections are applied, turn out to follow the `rest frame' Kormendy relation. This evidence, linked to the dynamical information gathered by Steidel et al.(1996), indicates that these galaxies, even at z~2-3, lie in the Fundamental Plane, in a virial equilibrium condition. At the same redshifts a statistically significant lack of large galaxies [i.e. with Log r_e(kpc) > 0.2] is observed.

Surface Photometry of Early-type Galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field

The detailed surface photometry of a sample of early-type galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field is presented as part of a long-term project aimed to settle strong observational constraints to the theories modelling the evolution of elliptical galaxies from the early stages. The sample has been extracted, in the V_606 band, from the catalog by Couch (1996). The analysis of the luminosity and geometrical profiles, carried out on 162 candidates obeying our provisional selection criteria, resulted in a list of 99 'bona fide' early-type galaxies, for which accurate total magnitudes and effective radii were computed. The comparison with the magnitudes given by Williams et al.(1996) indicates that the automated photometry tends to underestimate the total luminosity of the ellipticals. The luminosity profiles of most of galaxies in our sample follow fairly well the deVaucouleurs law (`Normal' profiles). However, a relevant fraction of galaxies, even following the deVaucouleurs law in the main body light distribution, exhibit in the inner region a flattening of the luminosity profile not attributable to the PSF (`Flat' profiles) or, in some cases, a complex (multi-nucleus) structure (`Merger' profiles). The average ellipticity of galaxies belonging to the `Flat' and `Merger' classes is found to be significantly higher than that of the `Normal' galaxies. Moreover, even taken into account the relevant uncertainty of the outer position angle profiles, the amount of isophotal twisting of HDF ellipticals turns out to be significantly larger with respect to that of the local samples.
