Hidden itinerant-spin phase in heavily-overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 revealed by dilute Fe doping: A combined neutron scattering and angle-resolved photoemission study

We demonstrated experimentally a direct way to probe a hidden propensity to the formation of spin density wave (SDW) in a non-magnetic metal with strong Fermi surface nesting. Substituting Fe for a tiny amount of Cu (1%) induced an incommensurate magnetic order below 20 K in heavily-overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO). Elastic neutron scattering suggested that this order cannot be ascribed to the localized spins on Cu or doped Fe. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), combined with numerical calculations, revealed a strong Fermi surface nesting inherent in the pristine LSCO that likely drives this order. The heavily-overdoped Fe-doped LSCO thus represents the first plausible example of the long-sought "itinerant-spin extreme" of cuprates, where the spins of itinerant doped holes define the magnetic ordering ground state. This finding complements the current picture of cuprate spin physics that highlights the predominant role of localized spins at lower dopings. The demonstrated set of methods could potentially apply to studying hidden density-wave instabilities of other "nested" materials on the verge of density wave ordering.

Inelastic neutron scattering study of the magnetic fluctuations in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

By performing time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on a large amount of single crystals of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, we studied detailed structure of the imaginary part of the dynamic spin susceptibility over a wide range of phase space. In the normal state at T=5 K, strong incommensurate (IC) peaks were clearly observed at around $\mathbf{Q}_\text{c}=(0.3,0.3)$ up to at least $\hbarω=80$ meV. In addition, our data also show strong magnetic fluctuations that exist on the ridges connecting the IC peaks around the $(π,π)$ point rather than around the $Γ$ point. Our results are consistent with the semi-mean-field random phase approximation calculation for a two dimensional Fermi liquid with a characteristic energy of 5.0 meV. Furthermore, the IC fluctuations were observed even at room temperature.

Doping dependence of the $(π,π)$ shadow band in La-based cuprates studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The $(π,π)$ shadow band (SB) in La-based cuprate family (La214) was studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) over a wide doping range from $x=0.01$ to $x=0.25$. Unlike the well-studied case of the Bi-based cuprate family, an overall strong, monotonic doping dependence of the SB intensity at the Fermi level ($E_F$) was observed. In contrast to a previous report for the presence of the SB only close to $x=1/8$, we found it exists in a wide doping range, associated with a doping-independent $(π,π)$ wave vector but strongly doping-dependent intensity: It is the strongest at $x\sim 0.03$ and systematically diminishes as the doping increases until it becomes negligible in the overdoped regime. This SB with the observed doping dependence of intensity can in principle be caused by the antiferromagnetic fluctuations or a particular form of low-temperature orthorhombic lattice distortion known to persist up to $x\sim 0.21$ in the system, with both being weakened with increasing doping. However, a detailed binding energy dependent analysis of the SB at $x=0.07$ does not appear to support the former interpretation, leaving the latter as a more plausible candidate, despite a challenge in quantitatively linking the doping dependences of the SB intensity and the magnitude of the lattice distortion. Our finding highlights the necessity of a careful and global consideration of the inherent structural complications for correctly understanding the cuprate Fermiology and its microscopic implication.

Coupling of spin and orbital excitations in the iron-based superconductor FeSe(0.5)Te(0.5)

We present a combined analysis of neutron scattering and photoemission measurements on superconducting FeSe(0.5)Te(0.5). The low-energy magnetic excitations disperse only in the direction transverse to the characteristic wave vector (1/2,0,0), whereas the electronic Fermi surface near (1/2,0,0) appears to consist of four incommensurate pockets. While the spin resonance occurs at an incommensurate wave vector compatible with nesting, neither spin-wave nor Fermi-surface-nesting models can describe the magnetic dispersion. We propose that a coupling of spin and orbital correlations is key to explaining this behavior. If correct, it follows that these nematic fluctuations are involved in the resonance and could be relevant to the pairing mechanism.

Investigation of the spin-glass regime between the antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases in Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_x$Te$_{1-x}$

Using bulk magnetization along with elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques, we have investigated the phase diagram of Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_{x}$Te$_{1-x}$ and the nature of magnetic correlations in three nonsuperconducting samples of Fe$_{1.01}$Se$_{0.1}$Te$_{0.9}$, Fe$_{1.01}$Se$_{0.15}$Te$_{0.85}$ and Fe$_{1.02}$Se$_{0.3}$Te$_{0.7}$. A cusp and hysteresis in the temperature dependence of the magnetization for the $x=0.15$ and 0.3 samples indicates spin-glass (SG) ordering below $T_{\rm sg} = 23$K. Neutron scattering measurements indicate that the spin-glass behavior is associated with short-range spin density wave (SDW) ordering characterized by a static component and a low-energy dynamic component with a characteristic incommensurate wave vector of ${\bf Q}_m = (0.46, 0, 0.50)$ and an anisotropy gap of $\sim$ 2.5 meV. Our high ${\bf Q}$-resolution data also show that the systems undergo a glassy structural distortion that coincides with the short-range SDW order.

Gigantic Impact of Magnetic Impurity on Stripe Order in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ ($x$$\sim$1/8)

Precise neutron-scattering experiments on La$_{1.88-y}$Sr$_{0.12+y}$Cu$_{0.99}$R$_{0.01}$O$_4$ ($y$=0 for R=Cu, Zn and $y$=0.01 for R=Ga, Fe) were performed to examine the stability of stripe order in cuprate oxides through impurity substitution effects. For all the impurity-substituted samples a static charge-density-wave order similar to that reported in the low-temperature-tetragonal phase (LTT) was discovered in the low-temperature-orthorhombic (LTO) phase for the first time. Fe substitution significantly enhanced both the charge- and spin-density-wave orders. These results indicate that dynamical charge stripes can be stabilized into static ones around the Cu-site defects regardless of the type of crystal structure. Additionally, large magnetic moments at the Cu-site may induce a decrease in the Cu spin fluctuations around the defects, which in turn, enhances the static charge-density-wave order.

Enhancement of electronic anomalies in iron-substituted La_2-x_Sr_x_Cu_1-y_Fe_y_O_4_ around x=0.22

We have measured the temperature dependences of Rho and Chi for Fe-substituted La_2-x_Sr_x_Cu_1-y_Fe_y_O_4_ in the overdoped regime, in order to investigate Fe-substitution effects on electronic properties around x=0.22. From the Rho measurements, it has been found around x=0.22 that the values of Rho are large at room temperature and that Rho exhibits a pronounced upturn at low temperatures. Moreover, from the Rho and Chi measurements, it has been found that T_c_ is anomalously depressed around x=0.22. These results indicate that the electronic anomalies around x=0.22 are enhanced by Fe substitution, which might be related to the development of stripe correlations by Fe substitution.

Hidden quantum spin gap state in the static stripe phase of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$

Low energy spin excitations were investigated in the static stripe phase of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals. For x = 1/8 in which long-range static stripe order exists, an energy gap of E_g = 4 meV exists in the excitation spectrum in addition to strong quasi-elastic, incommensurate spin fluctuations associated with the static stripes. When x increases, the spectral weight of the spin fluctuations shifts from the quasi-elastic continuum to the excitation spectrum above E_g. The dynamic correlation length as a function of energy and the temperature evolution of the energy spectrum suggest a phase separation of two distinct magnetic phases in real space.

Charge excitations associated with charge stripe order in the 214-type nickelate and superconducting cuprate

Charge excitations were studied for stipe-ordered 214 compounds, La$_{5/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$NiO$_{4}$ and 1/8-doped La$_{2}$(Ba, Sr)$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in hard x-ray regime. We have observed charge excitations at the energy transfer of 1 eV with the momentum transfer corresponding to the charge stripe spatial period both for the diagonal (nikelate) and parallel (cuprates) stripes. These new excitations can be interpreted as a collective stripe excitation or charge excitonic mode to a stripe-related in-gap state.

Neutron-scattering study of spin correlations in La1.94-xSrxCe0.06CuO4

We performed a neutron-scattering experiment to investigate the effect of distortion of CuO2 planes on the low-energy spin correlation of La1.94-xSrxCe0.06CuO4 (LSCCO). Due to the carrier-compensation effect by co-doping of Sr and Ce, LSCCO has a smaller orthorhombic lattice distortion compared to La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) with comparable hole concentration p. A clear gap with the edge-energy of 6~7 meV was observed in the energy spectrum of local dynamical susceptibility c"(w) for both x=0.18 (p~0.14) and x=0.24 (p~0.20) samples as observed for optimally-doped LSCO (x=0.15~0.18). For the x=0.14 (p~0.10) sample, in addition to the gap-like structure in c"(w) we observed a low-energy component within the gap which develops below 2~3meV with decreasing the energy. The low-energy component possibly coincides with the static magnetic correlation observed in this sample. These results are discussed from a view point of relationship between the stability of low-energy spin fluctuations and the distortion of CuO2 planes.

NMR study on the local structure in La-based high-Tc cuprates

To date, there has been no evidence for the macroscopic structural phase transition to the low temperature tetragonal structure (LTT) with a space group P42/ncm in high-TC cuprate of rare earth-free La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO). By investigating Cu-NMR on single crystals, we have found that spatially incoherent LTT structure emerges below 50 K in the sample with x=0.12. This incoherent structure is considered to play a key role for the slight depression of the superconductivity around x=1/8.

Magnetic Excitations of the Diagonal Incommensurate Phase in Lightly-Doped La2-xSrxCuO4

We present inelastic neutron scattering experiments on a single-domain crystal of lightly-doped La1.96Sr0.04CuO4. We find that the magnetic excitation spectrum in this insulating phase with a diagonal incommensurate spin modulation is remarkably similar to that in the superconducting regime, where the spin modulation is bond parallel. In particular, we find that the dispersion slope at low energy is essentially independent of doping and temperature over a significant range. The energy at which the excitations cross the commensurate antiferromagnetic wave vector increases roughly linearly with doping through the underdoped regime.

q-Dependence of the giant bond-stretching phonon anomaly in the stripe compound La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4 measured by IXS

Inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) was used to study the Cu-O bond-stretching vibrations in the static stripe phase compound La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4. It was found that the intrinsic width in Q-space of the previously reported huge anomalous phonon softening and broadening is approximately 0.08r.l.u HWHM. A detailed comparison was also made to inelastic neutron scattering (INS) studies, which indicate a two-peak lineshape (with superimposed broad and narrow peaks) in the vicinity of the anomaly. The high resolution IXS data show that the narrow peak is mostly an artifact of the poor transverse Q-resolution of INS. Otherwise the agreement between the INS and IXS was excellent.

Doping Dependence of Low-energy Spin Fluctuations in Electron-Doped Cuprates Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_x$CuO$_4$

The low-energy spin fluctuations in the electron-doped Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ have been investigated over a wide concentration range of 0.07$\leqslant$ $x$ $\leqslant$0.18 that spans from the antiferromagnetic and non-superconducting phase to the superconducting and paramagnetic phase. For all concentrations considered, the low energy excitations exhibit commensurate peaks centered at the ($π$, $π$) position. Our data show that the characteristics of the excitations, such as the relaxation rate and the overall spectral weight, change rapidly when the system enters the superconducting phase. The spin stiffness also decreases with increasing $x$ in the superconducting phase and is extrapolated to zero at $x$ = 0.21 when the superconductivity disappears. These indicate a close relation between the spin fluctuations and the superconductivity in the electron-doped system.

High-energy magnetic excitations from dynamic stripes in LBCO (x=1/8)

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the temperature dependence of magnetic excitations (for energies up to 100 meV) in the cuprate La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$. This compound exhibits stripe order below a temperature of ~50 K; previous measurements have shown that the magnetic excitations of the stripe-ordered phase have an hour-glass-like dispersion, with a saddle point at ~50 meV. Here we compare measurements in the disordered phase taken at 65 and 300 K. At energies on the scale of $k_{\rm B}T$, there is substantial momentum-broadening of the signal, and the low-energy incommensurate features can no longer be resolved at 300 K. In contrast, there is remarkably little change in the scattered signal for energies greater than $k_{\rm B}T$. In fact, the momentum-integrated dynamic susceptibility is almost constant with temperature. We suggest that the continuity of higher-energy magnetic excitations is strong evidence for dynamic stripes in the high-temperature, disordered phase. We reconsider the nature of the magnetic dispersion, and we discuss the correspondences between the thermal evolution of magnetic stripe correlations with other electronic properties of the cuprates.

Electron-phonon anomaly related to charge stripes: static stripe phase versus optimally-doped superconducting La1.85Sr0.15CuO4

Inelastic neutron scattering was used to study the Cu-O bond-stretching vibrations in optimally doped La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 (Tc = 35 K) and in two other cuprates showing static stripe order at low temperatures, i.e. La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4 and La1.875Ba0.125CuO4. All three compounds exhibit a very similar phonon anomaly, which is not predicted by conventional band theory. It is argued that the phonon anomaly reflects a coupling to charge inhomogeneities in the form of stripes, which remain dynamic in superconducting La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 down to the lowest temperatures. These results show that the phonon effect indicating stripe formation is not restricted to a narrow region of the phase diagram around the so-called 1/8 anomaly but occurs in optimally doped samples as well.

Effects of Superconductivity and Charge Order on the sub-Terahertz reflectivity of La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125-y}$Sr$_{y}$CuO$_4$

The reflectivity $R (ω)$ of both the $ab$ plane and the c axis of two single crystals of La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125-y}$Sr$_{y}$CuO$_4$ has been measured down to 5 cm$^{-1}$, using coherent synchrotron radiation below 30 cm$^{-1}$. For $y$ = 0.085, a Josephson Plasma Resonance is detected at $T \ll T_c$ = 31 K in $R_{c} (ω)$, and a far-infrared peak (FIP) appears in the optical conductivity below 50 K, where non-static charge ordering (CO) is reported by X-ray scattering. For $y$ = 0.05 ($T_c$ = 10 K), a FIP is observed in the low-temperature tetragonal phase below the ordering temperature $T_{CO}$. At 1/8 doping the peak frequency scales linearly with $T_{CO}$, confirming that the FIP is an infrared signature of CO, either static or fluctuating.

Electron-phonon coupling reflecting dynamic charge inhomogeneity in copper-oxide superconductors

The attempt to understand cuprate superconductors is complicated by the presence of multiple strong interactions. While many believe that antiferromagnetism is important for the superconductivity, there has been revived interest in the role of electron-lattice coupling. The recently studied conventional superconductor MgB2 has a very strong electron-lattice coupling, involving a particular vibrational mode (phonon), that was predicted by standard theory and confirmed quantitatively by experiment. Here we present inelastic scattering measurements that show a similarly strong anomaly in the Cu-O bond-stretching phonon in the cuprate superconductors La2-xSrxCuO4 (with x=0.07, 0.15). This is in contrast to conventional theory, which does not predict such behavior. The anomaly is strongest in La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 and La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4, compounds that exhibit spatially modulated charge and magnetic order, often called stripe order. It occurs at a wave vector corresponding to the charge order. These results suggest that this giant electron-phonon anomaly, which is absent in undoped and over-doped non-superconductors, is associated with charge inhomogeneity. It follows that electron-phonon coupling may be important to our understanding of superconductivity, although its contribution to the mechanism is likely to be indirect.
