Critical currents in vicinal YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ films

Most measurements of critical current densities in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ thin films to date have been performed on films where the \textit{c}-axis is grown normal to the film surface. With such films, the analysis of the dependence of $j_c$ on the magnetic field angle is complex. The effects of extrinsic contributions to the angular field dependence of $j_c$, such as the measurement geometry and disposition of pinning centres, are convoluted with those intrinsically due to the anisotropy of the material. As a consequence of this, it is difficult to distinguish between proposed FLL structure models on the basis of angular critical current density measurements on \textit{c}-axis films. Films grown on mis-cut (vicinal) substrates have a reduced measurement symmetry and thus provide a greater insight into the critical current anisotropy. In this paper previous descriptions of the magnetic field angle dependence of $j_c$ in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ are reviewed. Measurements on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ thin films grown on a range of vicinal substrates are presented and the results interpreted in terms of the structure and dimensionality of the FLL in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$. There is strong evidence for a transition in the structure of the flux line lattice depending on magnetic field magnitude, orientation and temperature. As a consequence, a simple scaling law can not, by itself, describe the observed critical current anisotropy in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$. The experimentally obtained $j_c(θ)$ behaviour of YBCO is successfully described in terms of a kinked vortex structure for fields applied near parallel to the \textit{a-b} planes.

Scanning Raman spectroscopy for characterizing compositionally spread films

Composition-spread La1-xSrxMnO3 thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition technique from LaMnO3 and SrMnO3 targets. The films were epitaxial with a continuous variation of the out of plane lattice parameter along the direction of composition gradient. Scanning Raman spectroscopy has been employed as a non-destructive tool to characterize the composition-spread films. Raman spectra showed the variation of the structural, Jahn Teller distortions and the presence of coexisting phases at particular compositions that are in agreement with the previous observation on the single crystal samples. Raman spectra on the continuous composition-spread film also reveal the effect of disorder and strain on the compositions.

Enhancement of Critical Current Density in low level Al-doped MgB2

Two sets of MgB2 samples doped with up to 5 at. % of Al were prepared in different laboratories using different procedures. Decreases in the a and c lattice parameters were observed with Al doping confirming Al substitution onto the Mg site. The critical temperature (Tc) remained largely unchanged with Al doping. For 1 - 2.5 at.% doping, at 20K the in-field critical current densities (Jc's) were enhanced, particularly at lower fields. At 5K, in-field Jc was markedly improved, e.g. at 5T Jc was enhanced by a factor of 20 for a doping level of 1 at.% Al. The improved Jcs correlate with increased sample resistivity indicative of an increase in the upper critical field, Hc2, through alloying.

High Curie temperatures in ferromagnetic Cr-doped AlN thin films

Al1-xCrxN thin films with $0.02\le x \le 0.1$ were deposited by reactive co-sputtering onto c-plane (001) sapphire. Room-temperature ferromagnetism with a coercive field of 85 Oe was observed in samples with chromium contents as low as x = 0.027 (2.7%). With increasing Cr content the mean magnetic moment is strongly suppressed, with a maximum saturation moment of 0.62 and 0.71 $μ_B$ per Cr atom at 300 and 50 K respectively. We show that the Curie temperature of Al1-xCrxN for x = 0.027 is greater than 900 K.

The Normal State Resistivity of Grain Boundaries in YBa2Cu3O7-delta

Using an optimized bridge geometry we have been able to make accurate measurements of the properties of YBa2Cu3O7-delta grain boundaries above Tc. The results show a strong dependence of the change of resistance with temperature on grain boundary angle. Analysis of our results in the context of band-bending allows us to estimate the height of the potential barrier present at the grain boundary interface.

Direct Observation of a Temperature Dependent 0-pi Junction Transition in a Mesoscopic High Critical Temperature Grain Boundary Junction

We have observed, for the first time, a temperature dependent 0-pi junction crossover in a 45 symmetric [001] tilt grain boundary junction. Experimental data, obtained by a double phase-sensitive test based on a low inductance dc SQUID, show an anomalous nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the Josephson current, clear evidence of a critical current sign change at a temperature T*. At the same temperature, the SQUID undergoes a transition from a 0-SQUID to a pi-SQUID. Results are in good agreement with theoretical models taking into account mid-gap states in low transparency junctions.

Controllable Josephson current through a pseudo-spin-valve structure

A thin Co/Cu/Permalloy (Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$) pseudo-spin-valve structure is sandwiched between superconducting Nb contacts. When the current is passed perpendicular to the plane of the film a Josephson critical current ($I_C$) is observed at 4.2 K, in addition to a magnetoresistance (MR) of $\sim$ 0.5 % at high bias. The hysteresis loop of the spin-valve structure can be cycled to modulate the zero field $I_C$ of the junction in line with the MR measurements. These modulations of resistance and $I_C$ occur both smoothly and sharply with the applied field. For each type of behaviour there is a strong correlation between shape of the MR loops and the $I_C$ modulation.

Proximity and Josephson effects in superconductor - antiferromagnetic Nb / γ-Fe50Mn50 heterostructures

We study the proximity effect in superconductor (S), antiferromagnetic (AF) bilayers, and report the fabrication and measurement of the first trilayer S/AF/S Josephson junctions. The disordered f.c.c. alloy γ-Fe50Mn50 was used as the AF, and the S is Nb. Micron and sub-micron scale junctions were measured, and the scaling of $J_C (d_AF)$ gives a coherence length in the AF of 2.4 nm, which correlates with the coherence length due to suppression of $T_C$ in the bilayer samples. The diffusion constant for FeMn was found to be 1.7 \times 10$^{-4}$ m$^2$ s$^-1$, and the density of states at the Fermi level was also obtained. An exchange biased FeMn/Co bilayer confirms the AF nature of the FeMn in this thickness regime.

Disorder induced collapse of the electron phonon coupling in MgB$_{2}$ observed by Raman Spectroscopy

The Raman spectrum of the superconductor MgB$_{2}$ has been measured as a function of the Tc of the film. A striking correlation is observed between the $T_{c}$ onset and the frequency of the $E_{2g}$ mode. Analysis of the data with the McMillan formula provides clear experimental evidence for the collapse of the electron phonon coupling at the temperature predicted for the convergence of two superconducting gaps into one observable gap. This gives indirect evidence of the convergence of the two gaps and direct evidence of a transition to an isotropic state at 19 K. The value of the electron phonon coupling constant is found to be 1.22 for films with T$_{c}$ 39K and 0.80 for films with T$_{c}\leq$19K.

The critical current of YBa2Cu3O7-d Low Angle Grain Boundaries

Transport critical current measurements have been performed on 5 degree [001]-tilt thin film YBa2Cu3O7-delta single grain boundaries with magnetic field rotated in the plane of the film, phi. The variation of the critical current has been determined as a function of the angle between the magnetic field and the grain boundary plane. In applied fields above 1 T the critical current, j_c, is found to be strongly suppressed only when the magnetic field is within an angle phi_k of the grain boundary. Outside this angular range the behavior of the artificial grain boundary is dominated by the critical current of the grains. We show that the phi dependence of j_c in the suppressed region is well described by a flux cutting model.

Decoupling of a Current-Biased Intrinsic Josephson Junction from its Environment

We have observed a dissipative phase diffusion branch in arrays of hysteretic high-Tc intrinsic Josephson junctions. By comparing the data with a thermal activation model we extract the impedance seen by the junction in which phase diffusion is occurring. At the plasma frequency this junction is isolated from its environment and it sees its own large (~ kilo Ohm) impedance. Our results suggest that stacks of Josephson junctions may be used for isolation purposes in the development of a solid state quantum computer.

Josephson effects in MgB2 meta masked ion damage junctions

Ion beam damage combined with nanoscale focused ion beam direct milling was used to create manufacturable SNS type Josephson junctions in 100 nm thick MgB$_{2}$ with T$_{C}$ of 38 K. The junctions show non-hysteretic current - voltage characteristics between 36 and 4.2 K. Experimental evidence for the dc and ac Josephson effects in MgB$_{2}$ metal masked ion damage junctions are presented. This technique is particularly useful for prototyping devices due to its simplicity and flexibility of fabrication and has a great potential for high-density integration.

A Directly Coupled Superconducting Quantum Interference Device Magnetometer Fabricated in Magnesium Diboride by Focused Ion Beam

We report the fabrication of a directly coupled superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer in MgB2 using a focused ion beam (FIB) to create Josephson junctions in a 70 nm thick film of MgB2. The SQUID shows a voltage modulation (deltaV) of 175 mV at a temperature of 10 K and operates over a temperature range from 10 K to 24 K. We find excellent agreement between the measured maximum transfer functions and those predicted by theory. We have measured the magnetic flux noise at 20 K to be as low as 14 micro Phi-0 per root Hz.

Microwave Power, DC Magnetic Field, Frequency and Temperature Dependence of the Surface Resistance of MgB2

The microwave power, dc magnetic field, frequency and temperature dependence of the surface resistance of MgB2 films and powder samples were studied. Sample quality is relatively easy to identify by a number of characteristics, the most clear being the breakdown in the omega squared law for poor quality samples. Analysis of the experimental data suggests the most attractive procedure for high quality film growth for technical applications.

Novel Josephson Junction Geometries in NbCu bilayers fabricated by Focused Ion Beam Microscope

We explore novel junction configurations as an extension of our established Focused Ion Beam-based low TC SNS Junction fabrication technique. By milling a circular trench (diameter 1 micron, width 50 nm) in a 125 nm Nb 75 nm Cu bilayer we define a superconducting island connected to the bulk of the film by a normal metal barrier and entirely enclosed in-plane by the superconducting film. The circular junction properties can be probed by depositing an insulating layer over the device and drilling a 0.3 micron diameter hole down to the island to allow a Nb via to be deposited. Device behavior has been studied at 4.2 K. An SNS-like current voltage characteristic and Shapiro steps are observed. It is in terms of magnetic field behavior that the device exhibits novel characteristics: as the device is entirely enclosed in type II superconductor, when a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plane of the film, only quantized flux can enter the junction. Hence as applied magnetic field is increased the junction critical current is unchanged, then abruptly suppressed as soon as a flux quantum enters (close to the expected value of lower critical field for the film).

Planar Superconductor-Normal-Superconductor Josephson Junctions in MgB2

Since the discovery of superconductivity in MgB2 considerable progress has been made in determining the physical properties of the material, which are promising for bulk conductors. Tunneling studies show that the material is reasonably isotropic and has a well-developed s-wave energy gap (∆), implying that electronic devices based on MgB2 could operate close to 30K. Although a number of groups have reported the formation of thin films by post-reaction of precursors, heterostructure growth is likely to require considerable technological development, making single-layer device structures of most immediate interest. MgB2 is unlike the cuprate superconductors in that grain boundaries do not form good Josephson junctions, and although a SQUID based on MgB2 nanobridges has been fabricated, the nanobridges themselves do not show junction-like properties. Here we report the successful creation of planar MgB2 junctions by localised ion damage in thin films. The critical current (IC) of these devices is strongly modulated by applied microwave radiation and magnetic field. The product of the critical current and normal state resistance (ICRN) is remarkably high, implying a potential for very high frequency applications.

Growth of Strongly Biaxially Aligned MgB2 Thin Films on Sapphire by Post-annealing of Amorphous Precursors

MgB2 thin films were cold-grown on sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), followed by post-annealing in mixed, reducing gas, Mg-rich, Zr gettered, environments. The films had Tcs in the range 29 K to 34 K, Jcs (20K, H=0) in the range 30 kA/cm2 to 300 kA/cm2, and irreversibility fields at 20 K of 4 T to 6.2 T. An inverse correlation was found between Tc and irreversibility field. The films had grain sizes of 0.1-1 micron and a strong biaxial alignment was observed in the 950C annealed film.

Effects of interlayer coupling on the irreversibility lines of NbN/AlN superconducting multilayers

We have studied the temperature dependence of the in-plane resistivity of NbN/AlN multilayer samples with varying insulating layer thickness in magnetic fields up to 7 Tesla parallel and perpendicular to the films. The upper critical field shows a crossover from 2D to 3D behavior in parallel fields. The irreversibility lines have the form (1-T/Tc)^alpha, where alpha varies from 4/3 to 2 with increasing anisotropy. The results are consistent with simultaneous melting and decoupling transitions for low anisotropy sample, and with melting of decoupled pancakes in the superconducting layers for higher anisotropy samples.
