Linear conductance of an interacting carbon nanotube ring

Linear transport through a single-walled carbon nanotube ring (CNR), pierced by a magnetic field and capacitively coupled to a gate voltage source, is investigated starting from a model of interacting $p_z$-electrons. The dc-conductance, calculated in the limit of weak tunneling between the ring and the leads, displays a periodic resonance pattern determined by the interplay between Coulomb interactions and quantum interference phenomena. Coulomb blockade effects are manifested in the absence of resonances for any applied flux in some gate voltage regions; the periodicity as a function of the applied flux can be smaller or larger than a flux quantum depending on the nanotube band mismatch.

Bloch's theory in periodic structures with Rashba's spin-orbit interaction

We consider a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba's spin-orbit interaction and two in-plane potentials superimposed along directions perpendicular to each other. The first of these potentials is assumed to be a general periodic potential while the second one is totally arbitrary. A general form for Bloch's amplitude is found and an eigen-value problem for the band structure of the system is derived. We apply the general result to the two particular cases in which either the second potential represents a harmonic in-plane confinement or it is zero. We find that for a harmonic confinement regions of the Brillouin zone with high polarizations are associated with the ones of large group velocity.

Dynamics of a qubit coupled to a broadened harmonic mode at finite detuning

We study the dynamics of a symmetric two-level system strongly coupled to a broadened harmonic mode. Upon mapping the problem onto a spin-boson model with peaked spectral density, we show how analytic solutions can be obtained, at arbitrary detuning and finite temperatures, in the case of large Q-factors of the oscillator. In general {\em two} or more oscillation frequencies of the two-level particle are observed as a consequence of the entanglement with the oscillator. Our approximated analytical solution well agrees with numerical predictions obtained within the non-interacting blip approximation.

Quantum Brownian motion in ratchet potentials: duality relation and its consequences

Quantum Brownian motion in ratchet potentials is investigated by means of an approach based on a duality relation. This relation links the long-time dynamics in a tilted ratchet potential in the presence of dissipation with the one in a driven dissipative tight-binding model. The application to quantum ratchet yields a simple expression for the ratchet current in terms of the transition rates in the tight-binding system.

Spectroscopy of a driven solid-state qubit coupled to a structured environment

We study the asymptotic dynamics of a driven spin-boson system where the environment is formed by a broadened localized mode. Upon exploiting an exact mapping, an equivalent formulation of the problem in terms of a quantum two-state system (qubit) coupled to a harmonic oscillator which is itself Ohmically damped, is found. We calculate the asymptotic population difference of the two states in two complementary parameter regimes. For weak damping and low temperature, a perturbative Floquet-Born-Markovian master equation for the qubit-oscillator system can be solved. We find multi-photon resonances corresponding to transitions in the coupled quantum system and calculate their line-shape analytically. In the complementary parameter regime of strong damping and/or high temperatures, non-perturbative real-time path integral techniques yield analytic results for the resonance line shape. In both regimes, we find very good agreement with exact results obtained from a numerical real-time path-integral approach. Finally, we show for the case of strong detuning between qubit and oscillator that the width of the $n$-photon resonance scales with the $n$-th Bessel function of the driving strength in the weak-damping regime.

Correlated sequential tunneling through a double barrier for interacting one-dimensional electrons

The problem of resonant tunneling through a quantum dot weakly coupled to spinless Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids has been studied. We compute the linear conductance due to sequential tunneling processes upon employing a master equation approach. Besides the previously used lowest-order golden rule rates describing uncorrelated sequential tunneling (UST) processes, we systematically include higher-order correlated sequential tunneling (CST) diagrams within the standard Weisskopf-Wigner approximation. We provide estimates for the parameter regions where CST effects can be important. Focusing mainly on the temperature dependence of the peak conductance, we discuss the relation of these findings to previous theoretical and experimental results.

Entanglement spectroscopy of a driven solid-state qubit and its detector

We study the asymptotic dynamics of a driven quantum two level system coupled via a quantum detector to the environment. We find multi-photon resonances which are due to the entanglement of the qubit and the detector. Different regimes are studied by employing a perturbative Floquet-Born-Markov approach for the qubit+detector system, as well as non-perturbative real-time path integral schemes for the driven spin-boson system. We find analytical results for the resonances, including the red and the blue sidebands. They agree well with those of exact ab-initio calculations.

Duality Relation for Quantum Ratchets

A duality relation between the long-time dynamics of a quantum Brownian particle in a tilted ratchet potential and a driven dissipative tight-binding model is reported. It relates a situation of weak dissipation in one model to strong dissipation in the other one, and vice versa. We apply this duality relation to investigate transport and rectification in ratchet potentials: From the linear mobility we infer ground-state delocalization for weak dissipation. We report reversals induced by adiabatic driving and temperature in the ratchet current and its dependence on the potential shape.

Dynamics of the spin-boson model with a structured environment

We investigate the dynamics of the spin-boson model when the spectral density of the boson bath shows a resonance at a characteristic frequency $Ω$ but behaves Ohmically at small frequencies. The time evolution of an initial state is determined by making use of the mapping onto a system composed of a quantum mechanical two-state system (TSS) which is coupled to a harmonic oscillator (HO) with frequency $Ω$. The HO itself is coupled to an Ohmic environment. The dynamics is calculated by employing the numerically exact quasiadiabatic path-integral propagator technique. We find significant new properties compared to the Ohmic spin-boson model. By reducing the TSS-HO system in the dressed states picture to a three-level system for the special case at resonance, we calculate the dephasing rates for the TSS analytically. Finally, we apply our model to experimentally realized superconducting flux qubits coupled to an underdamped dc-SQUID detector.

Quantum ratchet effect for vortices

We have measured a quantum ratchet effect for vortices moving in a quasi-one-dimensional Josephson junction array. In this solid-state device the shape of the vortex potential energy, and consequently the band structure, can be accurately designed. This band structure determines the presence or absence of the quantum ratchet effect, as observed in the presented experiments. In particular, asymmetric structures possessing only one band below the barrier do not exhibit current rectification at low temperatures and bias currents. The quantum nature of transport is also revealed in a universal/non-universal power-law dependence of the measured voltage-current characteristics for samples without/with rectification.

Correlated tunneling in intramolecular carbon nanotube quantum dots

We investigate correlated electronic transport in single-walled carbon nanotubes with two intramolecular tunneling barriers. We suggest that below a characteristic temperature the long range nature of the Coulomb interaction becomes crucial to determine the temperature dependence of the maximum G_max of the conductance peak. Correlated sequential tunneling dominates transport yielding the power-law G_max ~ T^{α_{end-end}-1}, typical for tunneling between the ends of two Luttinger liquids. Our predictions are in agreement with recent measurements.

Multi-band quantum ratchets

We investigate directed motion in non-adiabatically rocked ratchet systems sustaining few bands below the barrier. Upon restricting the dynamics to the lowest M bands, the total system-plus-bath Hamiltonian is mapped onto a discrete tight-binding model containing all the information both on the intra- and inter-well tunneling motion. A closed form for the current in the incoherent tunneling regime is obtained. In effective single-band ratchets, no current rectification occurs. We apply our theory to describe rectification effects in vortex quantum ratchets devices. Current reversals upon variation of the ac-field amplitude or frequency are predicted.

Strong coupling theory for tunneling and vibrational relaxation in driven bistable systems

A study of the dynamics of a tunneling particle in a driven bistable potential which is moderately-to-strongly coupled to a bath is presented. Upon restricting the system dynamics to the Hilbert space spanned by the M lowest energy eigenstates of the bare static potential, a set of coupled non-Markovian master equations for the diagonal elements of the reduced density matrix, within the discrete variale representation, is derived. The resulting dynamics is in good agreement with predictions of ab-initio real-time path integral simulations. Numerous results, analytical as well as numerical, for the quantum relaxation rate and for the asymptotic populations are presented. Our method is particularly convenient to investigate the case of shallow, time-dependent potential barriers and moderate-to-strong damping, where both a semi-classical and a Redfield-type approach are inappropriate.

Strong coupling theory for driven tunneling and vibrational relaxation

We investigate on a unified basis tunneling and vibrational relaxation in driven dissipative multistable systems described by their N lowest lying unperturbed levels. By use of the discrete variable representation we derive a set of coupled non-Markovian master equations. We present analytical treatments that describe the dynamics in the regime of strong system-bath coupling. Our findings are corroborated by ``ab-initio'' real-time path integral calculations.
