(Multi)Strangeness Production in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC. HIJING/BBar v2.0 predictions

Strangeness and multi-strangeness particles production can be used to explore the initial transient field fluctuations in heavy ion collisions. We emphasize the role played by Junction anti-Junction (JJbar) loops and strong color electric fields (SCF) in these collisions. Transient field fluctuations of SCF on the baryon production in central (0-5%) Pb+Pb collisions at nucleon-nucleon centre of mass energy of 5.5 TeV will be discussed in the framework of HIJING/BBbar v2.0 model, looking in particular to the predicted evolution of nuclear modification factors R_AA from RHIC to LHC energies. Our results indicate the importance of a good description of the baseline elementary p+p collisions at this energy.

Stopping Power from SPS to LHC energies

We investigate the energy dependence of hadron production and of stopping power based on HIJING/BBbar v2.0 model calculations. Pseudorapidity spectra and transverse momentum distributions for produced charged particles as well as net baryons (per pair of partcipants) and their rapidity loss are compared to data at RHIC and predictions for LHC energies are discussed.

Collisional Energy Loss of Non Asymptotic Jets in a QGP

We calculate the collisional energy loss suffered by a heavy (charm) quark created at a finite time within a Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) in the classical linear response formalism as in Peigne {\it et al.} \cite{peigne}. We pay close attention to the problem of formulating a suitable current and the isolation of binding and radiative energy loss effects. We find that unrealistic large binding effects arising in previous formulations must be subtracted. The finite time correction is shown to be important only for very short length scales on the order of a Debye length. The overall energy loss is similar in magnitude to the energy loss suffered by a charge created in the asymptotic past. This result has significant implications for the relative contribution to energy loss from collisional and radiative sources and has important ramifications for the ``single electron puzzle'' at RHIC.

Transient field fluctuations effects in d+Au and Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_nn} = 200 GeV

The effect of fluctuations of SCF on the baryon production in d+Au and Au+Au collisions at 200A GeV is studied in the framework of HIJING/BB v2.0 model. An increase of the string tension from kappa_0= 1 GeV/fm, to in medium mean values of 1.5 to 2.0 GeV/fm and 2.0 to 3.0 GeV/fm, for d+Au and Au+Au respectively, results in a consistent description of the observed nuclear modification factors R_dAu and R_AuAu(that relates (d)Au+Au and p+p colllisions) and point to the relevance of fluctuations of transient color fields. The differences between nuclear modification factors R_AuAu and R_CP (that relates central and peripheral collisions) are also discussed. The measurement of multi-strange (anti)hyperons (Ξ, Ω) yields would provide a crucial test of the importance of SCF fluctuations at RHIC energies.

Energy Systematics of Jet Tomography

The collision energy dependence of jet tomography is investigated within the GLV formalism. We estimate systematic uncertainties resulting from the interplay of energy loss fluctuations and the rapid increase of the parton transverse momentum slopes as $\sqrt{s}$ decreases from 200 to 62.4 AGeV.

Strong Color Field Baryonic Remnants in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions at 200A GeV

The effects of strong color electric fields (SCF) on the baryon production at RHIC are studied in the framework of HIJING/BB (v2.0) model. The particle species dependence of nuclear modification factors (NMF) are analyzed for Au+Au collisions at 200A GeV. A doubling of the string tension leading to a modification of the strangeness suppression according to Schwinger mechanism is shown to provide an alternate explanation to coalescence models for the interpretation of the observed baryon and meson production at moderate $p_T$ and results in a predicted enhancement in the (multi)strange (anti)hyperon production.

3D Jet Tomography of Twisted Strongly Coupled Quark Gluon Plasmas

The triangular enhancement of the rapidity distribution of hadrons produced in p+A reactions relative to p+p is a leading order in A^{1/3}/log(s) violation of longitudinal boost invariance at high energies. In A+A reactions this leads to a trapezoidal enhancement of the local rapidity density of produced gluons. The local rapidity gradient is proportional to the local participant number asymmetry, and leads to an effective rotation in the reaction plane. We propose that three dimensional jet tomography, correlating the long range rapidity and azimuthal dependences of the nuclear modification factor, R_{AA}(η,ϕ,p_\perp; b>0), can be used to look for this intrinsic longitudinal boost violating structure of $A+A$ collisions to image the produced twisted strongly coupled quark gluon plasma (sQGP). In addition to dipole and elliptic azimuthal moments of R_{AA}, a significant high p_\perp octupole moment is predicted away from midrapidity. The azimuthal angles of maximal opacity and hence minima of R_{AA} are rotated away from the normal to the reaction plane by an `Octupole Twist' angle, θ_3(η), at forward rapidities.

3D Jet Tomography of the Twisted Color Glass Condensate

Jet Tomography is proposed as a new test of Color Glass Condensate (CGC) initial conditions in non-central $A+A$ collisions. The $k_{T}$ factorized CGC formalism is used to calculate the rapidity twist in the reaction plane of both the bulk low $p_T< 2$ GeV matter as well as the rare high $p_T> 6$ GeV partons. Unlike conventional perturbative QCD, the initial high $p_{T}$ CGC gluons are shown to be twisted even further away from the beam axis than the the low $p_T$ bulk at high rapidities $|η|>2$. Differential directed flow $v_{1}(p_{T}>6,|η|>2)$ is proposed to test this novel high $p_T$ rapidity twist predicted by the CGC model.

Baryon Junction Loops in HIJING/BBv2.0 and the Baryon/Meson Anomaly at RHIC

A new version, v2.0, of the HIJING/BB Monte Carlo nuclear collision event generator is introduced in order to explore further the possible role of baryon junctions loops in the baryon/meson anomaly (2 $< p_{T} <$ 5 GeV/c) observed in 200A GeV Au+Au reactions at RHIC. We show that junction loops with an enhanced intrinsic $k_T\approx 1$ GeV/c transverse momentum kick may provide a partial explanation of the anomaly as well as other important baryon stopping observables.

Jet Tomography Studies in AuAu Collision at RHIC Energies

Recent RHIC results on pion production in AuAu collision at sqrt(s)=130 and 200 AGeV display a strong suppression effect at high p_T. This suppression can be connected to final state effects, namely jet energy loss induced by the produced dense colored matter. Applying our pQCD-based parton model we perform a quantitative analysis of the measured suppression pattern and determine the opacity of the produced deconfined matter.

The Mini-Jet Scale and Energy Loss at RHIC in the HIJING and RQMD Models

The original default mini-jet scale p_0=2 GeV/c and energy loss, dE/dx=2 GeV/fm in HIJING lead to a too rapid growth of the multiplicity with energy. RQMD model without mini-jet leads on the other hand to a too slowly increasing multiplicity with energy. We show that a slight increase of p_0 from the default 2.0 GeV/c at sqrt(s)=130A GeV to 2.2 GeV/c at sqrt{s}=200A GeV is sufficient to account for the bulk observables. Jet quenching of pi^0 above p_T>4 GeV/c at 200A GeV is found to be well reproduced in central Au+Au by the original HIJING default prediction. However, the effective surface emission in the HIJING model formulation of energy loss over-predicts the quenching in more peripheral collisions. Neither HIJING nor HIJING/B{bar}B can account for the observed anomalous excess of moderate p_T<4 GeV/c baryons. The agreement of RQMD with data in this p_T region is shown to be fortuitous because, without mini-jets, it fails to reproduce the p+p spectrum.

Does the Charm Flow at RHIC?

Recent PHENIX Au+Au -> e- + X data from open charm decay are shown to be consistent with two extreme opposite dynamical scenarios of ultra-relativistic nuclear reactions. Perturbative QCD without final state interactions was previously shown to be consistent with the data. However, we show that the data are also consistent with zero mean free path hydrodynamics characterized by a common transverse flow velocity field. The surprising coincidence of both D and B hydrodynamic flow spectra with pQCD up to p_T ~ 3 and 5 GeV, respectively, suggests that heavy quarks may be produced essentially at rest in the rapidly expanding gluon plasma. Possible implications and further tests of collective heavy quark dynamics are discussed.

Jet Energy Loss in Hot and Dense Matter

We discuss the the GLV Reaction Operator formalism for computing the non-abelian energy loss of jets propagating through hot and dense matter. We incorporate our results on induced gluon bremsstrahlung together with the effects of nuclear shadowing and multiple scattering in a two component soft+hard description of heavy ion reactions at RHIC energies. We demonstrate that good agreement between data and theory can be achieved in the measured moderate p_T <= 5 GeV window at root(s)=130 AGeV and we extend our predictions for the high p_T part of the hadronic spectra. We focus on the perspectives of using jet tomographic methods for probing not only the density and geometry of the quark-gluon plasma but also its parton composition at various center of mass energies.

Reaction Operator Approach to Multiple Elastic Scatterings

We apply the GLV Reaction Operator formalism to compute the effects of multiple elastic scatterings of jets propagating through dense matter. We derive the elastic Reaction Operator and demonstrate that the recursion relations have a closed form solution that reduces to the familiar Glauber form. We also investigate the accuracy of the Gaussian dipole approximation for jet transverse momentum broadening.

Jet Tomography of Au+Au Reactions Including Multi-gluon Fluctuations

Jet tomography is the analysis of the attenuation pattern of high transverse momentum hadrons to determine certain line integral transforms of the density profile of the QCD matter produced in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions. In this letter, we calculate the distortion of jet tomography due to multi-gluon fluctuations within the GLV radiative energy loss formalism. We find that fluctuations of the average gluon number, ~ 3 for RHIC initial conditions, reduce the attenuation of pions by approximately a factor Z ~ 0.4-0.5. Therefore the plasma density inferred from jet tomography without fluctuations must be enhanced by a factor 1/Z ~ 2.

K+/pi+ probes of jet quenching in AA collisions

Non-abelian energy loss in quark gluon plasma is shown to lead to novel hadron ratio suppression patterns in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions. We apply recent (GLV) estimates for the gluon radiative energy loss, which increases linearly with the jet energy up to E<20 GeV and depends quadratically on the nuclear radius, R. The K+/π+ ratio is found to be most sensitive to the initial density of the plasma.

Buckyballs and gluon junction networks on the femtometer scale

We explore the possibility that novel geometrical structures analogous to carbon Fullerenes may exist in Nature on the femtometer scale. QCD predicts the existence of special topological gluon field configurations called baryon junctions and anti-junctions. Here we show that femto-scale structures, networks or closed (gluon field) cages, can be constructed in the theory of QCD as tiny cousins of familiar nano-scale structures such as carbonic Fullerenes C_{60}, C_{70}. The most symmetric polyhedra of QCD junctions (J-balls) are characterized by the magic numbers 8, 24, 48, and 120, and zero net baryon number. Tubes, prisms, tori and other topological structures can also be created. In addition, special configurations can be constructed that are odd under charge and parity conjugation (CP), although the QCD Lagrangian is CP even. We provide a semi-classical estimate for the expected mass range of QCD Buckyballs and discuss the possible conditions under which such novel topological excitations of the QCD vacuum may be produced in experiments of high energy physics.

Jet quenching as a probe of gluon plasma formation

We study, in a pQCD calculation augmented by nuclear effects, the jet energy loss needed to reproduce the pi^0 spectra in Au+Au collisions at large p_T, measured by PHENIX at RHIC. The transverse width of the parton momentum distributions (intrinsic-k_T) is used phenomenologically to obtain a reliable baseline pp result. Jet quenching is applied to the nuclear spectra (including shadowing and multiscattering) to fit the data.
