Anomalous Anti-proton to Negative Pion Ratio as Revealed by Jet Quenching at RHIC

We study the apparent discrepancy between the standard PQCD predictions for the meson and baryon ratios and multiplicities at moderate high $p_{T} > 2$ GeV and recent experimental measurements in $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}_{NN}=130$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We show that the differences, most pronounced in central collisions, can be explained by a strong non-perturbative baryon Junction component, which dominates the currently accessible experimental $p_{T}$ window and the non-abelian energy loss of fast partons propagating through hot and dense medium. The recently introduced two component hybrid model, which combines a quenched jet PQCD calculation in the Gyulassy-Levai-Vitev (GLV) formalism and a phenomenological "soft" part, is further elaborated to take into account the full 3D expansion in the pre-hadronization phase and include particle flavor dependent "soft" inverse slopes as suggested by the baryon Junction picture. We show that such approach can resolve what seems to be a factor of $\simeq 2$ difference in the moderate high $p_{T}$ suppression of $π^0$ and $h^-$ as recently reported by the PHENIX collaboration. The observed quenching of the high $p_{T}$ particle spectra and the large $\bar{p}/π^-$ and $p/π^+$ ratios as a function of $p_{T}$ are found to be consistent with a creation of a deconfined phase and non-abelian energy loss of fast partons in a plasma of initial gluon rapidity density $dN^g/dy \sim 1000$.

Discovery of Jet Quenching at RHIC and the Opacity of the Produced Gluon Plasma

The predicted quenching of jets in A+A at RHIC energies has been discovered by STAR and PHENIX in preliminary data reported at this conference. We apply the GLV theory of QCD radiative energy loss to estimate the opacity, L/λ_g, of the gluon plasma produced in Au+Au collisions at 130 AGeV. We show that (in contrast to the factor of two Cronin enhancement of π^0 found at the SPS by WA98) the factor of 5-8 suppression of p_T \sim 2-4 GeV π^0 reported by PHENIX can be accounted for with an effective static plasma opacity L/λ_g \approx 3-4.

Buckyballs of QCD: gluon junction networks

We propose that femto scale QCD analogs of Fullerene type excitations may exist with ``magic numbers'' 8,24,48, and 120. These ``J-balls'' are the most symmetrical closed networks of gluonic baryon junctions and anti-junctions with zero net baryon number. CP odd J-Moebii and other femto-tubes and tori gluonic structures may also exist. We estimate the relative binding energies and discuss possible experimental signatures of the formation of these new topological gluonic states.

Reaction Operator Approach to Non-Abelian Energy Loss

A systematic expansion of the induced inclusive gluon radiation associated with jet production in a dense QCD plasma is derived using a reaction operator formalism. Analytic expressions for the transverse momentum and light-cone momentum distributions are derived to all orders in powers of the gluon opacity of the medium, $Nσ_g/A=L/λ_g$. The reaction operator approach also leads to a simple algebraic proof of the ``color triviality'' of single inclusive distributions and to a solvable set of recursion relations. The analytic solution generalizes previous continuum solutions (BDMPS) for applications to mesoscopic QCD plasmas. The solution is furthermore not restricted to uncorrelated geometries and allows for evolving screening scales as well as the inclusion of finite kinematic constraints. The later is particularly important because below LHC energies the kinematic constraints significantly decrease the non-abelian energy loss. Our solution for the inclusive distribution also generalizes the finite order exclusive (tagged) distribution case studied previously (GLV1). The form of the analytic solution is well suited for numerical implementation in Monte Carlo event generators to enable more accurate calculations of jet quenching in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions. Numerical results illustrating the constributions of the first three orders in opacity are compared to the ``self-quenching'' hard radiation intensity. A surprising result is that the induced gluon radiation intensity is dominated by the (quadratic in $L$) first order opacity contribution for realistic geometries and jet energies in nuclear collisions.

Non-Abelian Energy Loss at Finite Opacity

A systematic expansion in opacity, $L/λ$, is used to clarify the non-linear behavior of induced gluon radiation in quark-gluon plasmas. The inclusive differential gluon distribution is calculated up to second order in opacity and compared to the zeroth order (factorization) limit. The opacity expansion makes it possible to take finite kinematic constraints into account that suppress jet quenching in nuclear collisions below RHIC ($\sqrt{s}=200$ AGeV) energies.

Back-to-Back Correlations for Bosons Modified by Medium

Novel back-to-back correlations are shown to arise for thermal ensembles of squeezed bosonic states associated with medium-modified mass-shifts. The strength of these correlations could become unexpectedly large in heavy ion collisions.

Correlations for Mass-Shifted Bosons

We discuss a new kind of correlation, the correlation of particle-antiparticle pairs emitted back-to-back in the local rest frame of a medium, if medium effects cause mass modification of the quanta. The theory of these new correlations is summarized for relativistically expanding, locally thermalized sources.

Signatures of Quark-Gluon-Plasma formation in high energy heavy-ion collisions: A critical review

A critical review on signatures of Quark-Gluon-Plasma formation is given and the current (1998) experimental status is discussed. After giving an introduction to the properties of QCD matter in both, equilibrium- and non-equilibrium theories, we focus on observables which may yield experimental evidence for QGP formation. For each individual observable the discussion is divided into three sections: first the connection between the respective observable and QGP formation in terms of the underlying theoretical concepts is given, then the relevant experimental results are reviewed and finally the current status concerning the interpretation of both, theory and experiment, is discussed. A comprehensive summary including an outlook towards RHIC is given in the final section.

Strange hyperon and antihyperon production from quark and string-rope matter

Hyperon and antihyperon production is investigated using two microscopical models: {\bf (1)} the fast hadronization of quark matter as given by the ALCOR model; {\bf (2)} string formation and fragmentation as in the HIJING/B model. We calculate the particle numbers and momentum distributions for Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS energies in order to compare the two models with each other and with the available experimental data. We show that these two theoretical approaches give similar yields for the hyperons, but strongly differ for antihyperons.

Specific Interactions at Cosmic Ray Energies for Extensive Air Showers Experiments

The HIJING and VENUS models of relativistic hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions are used to study interactions of hadron-hadron, hadron-nitrogen and nucleus-nitrogen collisions, specific for the extensive air shower developments initiated by cosmic rays in the atmosphere. The transverse energy, transverse momenta and spectra of secondary particles as well as their energy and mass dependence have been investigated in detail. Results are presented with particular emphasis on the contributions of minijets in HIJING model and validity of superposition models in this energy range.

Baryon Number Transport in High Energy Nuclear Collisions

Recent SPS data on the rapidity distribution of protons in p+S, p+Au and S+S collisions at 200 AGeV and preliminary Pb+Pb collisions at 160 AGeV are compared to HIJING and VENUS calculations as well as to predictions based on the Multi-Chain Model (MCM). The preliminary Pb data suggest that a linear dependence of the proton rapidity shift as a function of the nuclear thickness, as first observed in p+A reactions, may apply up to Pb+Pb reactions. The observed rapidity dependence of produced hyperons in both p+A and A+A reactions however cannot be explained in terms of such models without introducing additional non-linear effects.

Hot Spots and Turbulent Initial Conditions of Quark-Gluon Plasmas in Nuclear Collisions

As a result of multiple mini-jet production, initial conditions of the QCD plasma formed in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions may be inhomogeneous, with large fluctuations of the local energy density (hot spots), and turbulent, with a chaotic initial transverse velocity field. Assuming rapid local thermalization, the evolution of such plasmas is computed using longitudinal boost-invariant 3+1-dimensional hydrodynamics. We compare the evolution in case that the speed of sound in the plasma is constant to one resulting from an equation of state involving a strong first order transition, with a minimum of the velocity of sound as a function of energy density. We find that azimuthally asymmetric fluctuations and correlations of the transverse energy flow can develop in both cases due to the initial inhomogeneities. Hot spots also enhance significantly high-transverse momenta direct photon yields. In the case with a phase transition, the hadronization surface evolves into an unusual foam-like structure. Also in that case, we find that hadronization is considerably delayed relative to the ideal gas case, just as previous studies have found for homogeneous initial conditions. The time-delay signature of a rapid cross-over transition region in the QCD equation of state (as observable via meson interferometry) is thus found to be remarkably robust to uncertainties in the initial conditions in heavy-ion reactions.

Transverse Shocks in the Turbulent Gluon Plasma Produced in Ultra-Relativistic A+A

Mini-jet production in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions leads to initial conditions characterized by large fluctuations of the local energy density (hot spots) and of the collective flow field (turbulence). Assuming that local equilibrium is reached on a small time scale, $\sim 0.5$ fm/c, the transverse evolution of those initial conditions is computed using hydrodynamics. We find that a new class of collective flow phenomena (hadronic volcanoes) could arise under such conditions. This could be observable via enhanced azimuthal fluctuations of the transverse energy flow, $d^2E_\perp/dϕdy$.

Reply to Comment of Gazdzicki and Heinz on Strangeness Enhancement in $p+A$ and $S+A$

The Comment of Gazdzicki and Heinz is flawed because their assumed baryon stopping power in $pA$ is inconsistent with data and because they ignored half the analysis based on the VENUS model. The Comment continues the misleading presentation of strangeness enhancement by focusing on ratios of integrated yields. Those ratios discard essential experimental information on the rapidity dependence of produced $Λ$ and obscure discrepancies between different data sets. Our conclusion remains that the NA35 minimum bias data on $p+S\rightarrowΛ+X $ indicate an anomalous enhancement of central rapidity strangeness in few nucleon reactions that points to non-equilibrium dynamics as responsible for strangeness enhancement in nuclear reactions.

Strangeness Enhancement in $p+A$ and $S+A$ Interactions at SPS Energies

The systematics of strangeness enhancement is calculated using the HIJING and VENUS models and compared to recent data on $\,pp\,$, $\,pA\,$ and $\,AA\,$ collisions at CERN/SPS energies ($200A\,\, GeV\,$). The HIJING model is used to perform a {\em linear} extrapolation from $pp$ to $AA$. VENUS is used to estimate the effects of final state cascading and possible non-conventional production mechanisms. This comparison shows that the large enhancement of strangeness observed in $S+Au$ collisions, interpreted previously as possible evidence for quark-gluon plasma formation, has its origins in non-equilibrium dynamics of few nucleon systems. % Strangeness enhancement %is therefore traced back to the change in the production dynamics %from $pp$ to minimum bias $pS$ and central $SS$ collisions. A factor of two enhancement of $Λ^{0}$ at mid-rapidity is indicated by recent $pS$ data, where on the average {\em one} projectile nucleon interacts with only {\em two} target nucleons. There appears to be another factor of two enhancement in the light ion reaction $SS$ relative to $pS$, when on the average only two projectile nucleons interact with two target ones.
