First Observation of an Exotic Reggeon

We present new \compass high-statistics measurements of the peripheral production of $\eta \pi^-$ and $\eta^\prime \pi^-$ pairs in the reactions $\pi^- p \to \eta^{(\prime)}\pi^- p$. For the first time, we perform an unbinned analysis of the high-mass region of the $\eta\pi^-$ and $\eta^\prime\pi^-$ systems, which allows us to disentangle the exchange mechanisms governing their production. We report the first observation in high-energy scattering of an exotic Reggeon with high significance exceeding $5\,\sigma$ for both channels, which is, most likely, related to the exotic $\pi_1(1600)$.8

Dihadron Transverse-Spin Asymmetries in Muon-Deuteron Deep-Inelastic Scattering

In 2022, the COMPASS collaboration performed semi-inclusive measurements of deep-inelastic muon-scattering on a transversely polarised deuteron (6LiD) target. From these data, transverse-spin-dependent dihadron asymmetries are extracted using pairs of oppositely charged hadrons. These asymmetries are directly sensitive to the quark transversity distributions and provide an independent handle on these fundamental quantities with respect to the Collins asymmetries measured in single-hadron production. The present results significantly improve upon the previous COMPASS deuteron measurements, which were the only available deuteron data worldwide, and reach a statistical precision comparable to that of the existing proton results from COMPASS. A small but nonzero asymmetry is observed at large Bjorken-x, consistent with theoretical expectations. A point-by-point extraction of the valence-quark transversity distributions yields, in particular, a substantially improved determination of the d-quark transversity. These measurements represent a major step towards a complete flavour mapping of the transverse-spin structure of the nucleon.

Spectroscopy of Strange Mesons and First Observation of a Strange Crypto-Exotic State with $J^P=0^-$

We measured the strange-meson spectrum in the scattering reaction $K^{-}+p \rightarrow K^{-}\pi^{-}\pi^{-}+p$ with the COMPASS spectrometer at CERN. Using the world's largest sample of this reaction, we performed a comprehensive partial-wave analysis of the mesonic final state. It substantially extends the strange-meson spectrum covering twelve states with masses up to 2.4 GeV/$c^2$. We observe the first candidate for a crypto-exotic strange meson with $J^{P}=0^{-}$ and find $K_3$ and $K_4$ states consistent with predictions for the ground states.

Measurement of the hard exclusive $\pi^{0}$ muoproduction cross section at COMPASS

A new and detailed measurement of the cross section for hard exclusive neutral-pion muoproduction on the proton was performed in a wide kinematic region, with the photon virtuality $Q^2$ ranging from 1 to 8 (GeV/$c$)$^{\rm\, 2}$ and the Bjorken variable $x_{\rm Bj}$ ranging from 0.02 to 0.45. The data were collected at COMPASS at CERN using 160 GeV/$c$ longitudinally polarised $\mu^+$ and $\mu^-$ beams scattering off a 2.5 m long liquid hydrogen target. From the average of the measured $\mu^+$ and $\mu^-$ cross sections, the virtual-photon--proton cross section is determined as a function of the squared four-momentum transfer between the initial and final state proton in the range 0.08 (GeV/$c$)$^{\rm\, 2}$ $< |t| <$ 0.64 (GeV/$c$)$^{\rm\, 2}$. From its angular distribution, the combined contribution of transversely and longitudinally polarised photons are determined, as well as transverse--transverse and longitudinal--transverse interference contributions. They are studied as functions of four-momentum transfer $|t|$, photon virtuality $Q^2$ and virtual-photon energy $\nu$. The longitudinal--transverse interference contribution is found to be compatible with zero. The significant transverse--transverse interference contribution reveals the existence of a dominant contribution by transversely polarized photons. This provides clear experimental evidence for the chiral-odd GPD $\overline{E}_T$. In addition, the existence of a non-negligible contribution of longitudinally polarized photons is suggested by the $|t|$-dependence of the cross section at $x_{\rm Bj} < $ 0.1 . Altogether, these results provide valuable input for future modelling of GPDs and thus of cross sections for exclusive pseudo-scalar meson production. Furthermore, they can be expected to facilitate the study of next-to-leading order corrections and higher-twist contributions.

Multiplicities of positive and negative pions, kaons and unidentified hadrons from deep-inelastic scattering of muons off a liquid hydrogen target

The multiplicities of positive and negative pions, kaons and unidentified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering are measured in bins of the Bjorken scaling variable $x$, the relative virtual-photon energy $y$ and the fraction of the virtual-photon energy transferred to the final-state hadron $z$. Data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam of both electric charges and a liquid hydrogen target. These measurements cover the kinematic domain with photon virtuality $Q^2 > 1$ (GeV/$c)^2$, $0.004 < x < 0.4$, $0.1 < y < 0.7$ and $0.2 < z < 0.85$, in accordance with the kinematic domain used in earlier published COMPASS multiplicity measurements with an isoscalar target. The calculation of radiative corrections was improved by using the Monte Carlo generator DJANGOH, which results in up to 12\% larger corrections in the low-$x$ region.

High-statistics measurement of Collins and Sivers asymmetries for transversely polarised deuterons

New results are presented on a high-statistics measurement of Collins and Sivers asymmetries of charged hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering of muons on a transversely polarised $^6$LiD target. The data were taken in 2022 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the 160 \gevv\ muon beam at CERN, balancing the existing data on transversely polarised proton targets. The first results from about two-thirds of the new data have total uncertainties smaller by up to a factor of three compared to the previous deuteron measurements. Using all the COMPASS proton and deuteron results, both the transversity and the Sivers distribution functions of the $u$ and $d$ quark, as well as the tensor charge in the measured $x$-range are extracted. In particular, the accuracy of the $d$ quark results is significantly improved.

Final COMPASS results on the transverse-spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetries in the pion-induced Drell-Yan process

The COMPASS Collaboration performed measurements of the Drell-Yan process in 2015 and 2018 using a 190 GeV/c $\pi^{-}$ beam impinging on a transversely polarised ammonia target. Combining the data of both years, we present final results on the amplitudes of the five azimuthal modulations in the dimuon production cross section. Three of these transverse-spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetries (TSAs) probe the nucleon leading-twist Sivers, transversity, and pretzelosity transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs). The other two are induced by subleading effects. These TSAs provide unique new inputs for the study of the nucleon TMD PDFs and their universality properties. In particular, the Sivers TSA observed in this measurement is consistent with the fundamental QCD prediction of a sign change of naive time-reversal-odd TMD PDFs when comparing the Drell-Yan process with semi-inclusive measurements of deep inelastic scattering. Also, within the context of model predictions, the observed transversity TSA is consistent with the expectation of a sign change for the Boer-Mulders function.

Collins and Sivers transverse-spin asymmetries in inclusive muoproduction of $\rho^0$ mesons

The production of vector mesons in deep inelastic scattering is an interesting yet scarsely explored channel to study the transverse spin structure of the nucleon and the related phenomena. The COMPASS collaboration has performed the first measurement of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries for inclusively produced $\rho^0$ mesons. The analysis is based on the data set collected in deep inelastic scattering in $2010$ using a $160\,\,\rm{GeV}/c$ $\mu^+$ beam impinging on a transversely polarized $\rm{NH}_3$ target. The $\rho^{0}$ mesons are selected from oppositely charged hadron pairs, and the asymmetries are extracted as a function of the Bjorken-$x$ variable, the transverse momentum of the pair and the fraction of the energy $z$ carried by the pair. Indications for positive Collins and Sivers asymmetries are observed.

Spin Density Matrix Elements in Exclusive $\rho ^0$ Meson Muoproduction

We report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive $\rho ^0$ meson muoproduction at COMPASS using 160~GeV/$c$ polarised $ \mu ^{+}$ and $ \mu ^{-}$ beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The measurement covers the kinematic range 5.0~GeV/$c^2$ $< W <$ 17.0~GeV/$c^2$, 1.0 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ $< Q^2 <$ 10.0 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ and 0.01 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ $< p_{\rm{T}}^2 <$ 0.5 (GeV/$c$)$^2$. Here, $W$ denotes the mass of the final hadronic system, $Q^2$ the virtuality of the exchanged photon, and $p_{\rm{T}}$ the transverse momentum of the $\rho ^0$ meson with respect to the virtual-photon direction. The measured non-zero SDMEs for the transitions of transversely polarised virtual photons to longitudinally polarised vector mesons ($\gamma^*_T \to V^{ }_L$) indicate a violation of $s$-channel helicity conservation. Additionally, we observe a dominant contribution of natural-parity-exchange transitions and a very small contribution of unnatural-parity-exchange transitions, which is compatible with zero within experimental uncertainties. The results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, they may allow one to evaluate in a model-dependent way the role of parton helicity-flip GPDs in exclusive $\rho ^0$ production.

Update on the LLRF operations status at the European XFEL

The European XFEL (EuXFEL) is a free-electron laser in the X-ray range for users. Its high availability is one of the key aspects of the machine. In 2022, it entered in the sixth year of operation. The EuXFEL linac is based on the TESLA superconducting RF technology, operating at 1.3 GHz with an RF pulse length of 650 $\mu$s and a repetition rate of 10 Hz. The LLRF system is based on the MicroTCA standard and relies on a high level of automation. In this contribution, we review the LLRF operation at the EuXFEL and the development of new tools and features to improve the monitoring and extend the usability of the LLRF system.

Double $J/\psi$ production in pion-nucleon scattering at COMPASS

We present the study of the production of double $J/\psi$ mesons using COMPASS data collected with a 190 GeV/$c$ $\pi^-$ beam scattering off NH$_{3}$, Al and W targets. Kinematic distributions of the collected double $J/\psi$ events are analysed, and the double $J/\psi$ production cross section is estimated for each of the COMPASS targets. The results are compared to predictions from single- and double-parton scattering models as well as the pion intrinsic charm and the tetraquark exotic resonance hypotheses. It is demonstrated that the single parton scattering production mechanism gives the dominant contribution that is sufficient to describe the data. An upper limit on the double intrinsic charm content of pion is evaluated. No significant signatures that could be associated with exotic tetraquarks are found in the double $J/\psi$ mass spectrum.

Magnetostriction and magnetostructural domains in CoTiO$_3$

We report the magnetostrictive length changes of CoTiO$_3$ studied by means of high-resolution dilatometry in magnetic fields ($B$) up to 15~T. In the long-range antiferromagnetically ordered phase below $T_N$ = 38~K, the easy-plane type spin structure undergoes a spin-reorientation transition in the $ab$ plane in magnetic fields $B || ab \approx 2$~T. We observe pronounced length changes driven by external magnetic field in this field region indicating significant magnetoelastic coupling in CoTiO$_3$. Specifically, we observe anisotropic deformation of the lattice for fields applied in the $ab$ plane. While, for $B \lesssim 2$~T, in-plane magnetostriction shows that the lattice expands (contracts) parallel (perpendicular) to the field direction, the opposite behaviour appear at higher fields. Furthermore, there are remarkable effects of slight changes in the applied uniaxial pressure on the magnetostrictive response of CoTiO$_3$ persisting to temperatures well above $T_N$. The data evidence the presence of magnetic domains below $T_N$ as well as of structural ones in CoTiO$_3$. The presence of magnetic domains in the spin ordered phase is further evidenced by an additional 3-fold magnetic anisotropy appearing below $T_N$. We discuss the effects of rotational magnetic domains on isothermal magnetization and magnetostriction and interpret our results on the basis of a multi-domain phenomenological model.

The exotic meson $\pi_1(1600)$ with $J^{PC} = 1^{-+}$ and its decay into $\rho(770)\pi$

We study the spin-exotic $J^{PC} = 1^{-+}$ amplitude in single-diffractive dissociation of 190 GeV$/c$ pions into $\pi^-\pi^-\pi^+$ using a hydrogen target and confirm the $\pi_1(1600) \to \rho(770) \pi$ amplitude, which interferes with a nonresonant $1^{-+}$ amplitude. We demonstrate that conflicting conclusions from previous studies on these amplitudes can be attributed to different analysis models and different treatment of the dependence of the amplitudes on the squared four-momentum transfer and we thus reconcile their experimental findings. We study the nonresonant contributions to the $\pi^-\pi^-\pi^+$ final state using pseudo-data generated on the basis of a Deck model. Subjecting pseudo-data and real data to the same partial-wave analysis, we find good agreement concerning the spectral shape and its dependence on the squared four-momentum transfer for the $J^{PC} = 1^{-+}$ amplitude and also for amplitudes with other $J^{PC}$ quantum numbers. We investigate for the first time the amplitude of the $\pi^-\pi^+$ subsystem with $J^{PC} = 1^{--}$ in the $3\pi$ amplitude with $J^{PC} = 1^{-+}$ employing the novel freed-isobar analysis scheme. We reveal this $\pi^-\pi^+$ amplitude to be dominated by the $\rho(770)$ for both the $\pi_1(1600)$ and the nonresonant contribution. We determine the $\rho(770)$ resonance parameters within the three-pion final state. These findings largely confirm the underlying assumptions for the isobar model used in all previous partial-wave analyses addressing the $J^{PC} = 1^{-+}$ amplitude.

Magnetic phase diagram, magnetoelastic coupling and Gr\"uneisen scaling in CoTiO$_3$

High-quality single crystals of CoTiO$_3$ are grown and used to elucidate in detail structural and magnetostructural effects by means of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry studies in fields up to 15 T which are complemented by specific heat and magnetization measurements. In addition, we refine the single-crystal structure of the ilmenite ($R\bar{3}$) phase. At the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$, pronounced $\lambda$-shaped anomaly in the thermal expansion coefficients signals shrinking of both the $c$ and $b$ axes, indicating strong magnetoelastic coupling with uniaxial pressure along $c$ yielding six times larger effect on $T_\mathrm{N}$ than the pressure applied in-plane. The hydrostatic pressure dependency derived by means of Gr\"uneisen analysis amounts to $\partial T_\mathrm{N}/ \partial p\approx 2.7(4)$~K/GPa. The high-field magnetization studies in static and pulsed magnetic fields up to 60~T along with high-field thermal expansion measurements facilitate in constructing the complete anisotropic magnetic phase diagram of CoTiO$_3$. While the results confirm the presence of significant magnetodielectric coupling, our data show that magnetism drives the observed structural, dielectric, and magnetic changes both in the short-range ordered regime well-above $T_\mathrm{N}$ as well as in the long-range magnetically ordered phase.

Fluctuation driven height reduction of crosslinked polymer brushes

We study the changes in the conformations of brushes upon the addition of crosslinks between the chains using the bond fluctuation model. The Flory-Rehner model applied to uni-axially swollen networks predicts a collapse for large degrees of crosslinking $q$ proportional to $q^{-1/3}$ in disagreement with our simulation data. We show that the height reduction of the brushes is driven by monomer fluctuations in direction perpendicular to the grafting plane and not due to network elasticity. We observe that the impact of crosslinking is different for reactions between monomers of the same or on different chains. If the length reduction of the effective chain length due to both types of reactions is accounted for in a function $\beta(q)$, the height of the brush can be derived from a Flory approach for the equilibrium brush height leading to $H(q)\approx H_{b}\beta(q)^{1/3}$, whereby $H_{b}$ denotes the height of the non-crosslinked brush.

Topological magnetic materials of the (MnSb$_2$Te$_4$)$\cdot$(Sb$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ van der Waals compounds family

Combining robust magnetism, strong spin-orbit coupling and unique thickness-dependent properties of van der Waals crystals could enable new spintronics applications. Here, using density functional theory, we propose the (MnSb$_2$Te$_4$)$\cdot$(Sb$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ family of stoichiometric van der Waals compounds that harbour multiple topologically-nontrivial magnetic phases. In the groundstate, the first three members of the family, i.e. MnSb$_2$Te$_4$, ($n=0$), MnSb$_4$Te$_7$, ($n=1$), and MnSb$_6$Te$_{10}$, ($n=2$), are 3D antiferromagnetic topological insulators (AFMTIs), while for $n \geq 3$ a special phase is formed, in which a nontrivial topological order coexists with a partial magnetic disorder in the system of the decoupled 2D ferromagnets, whose magnetizations point randomly along the third direction. Furthermore, due to a weak interlayer exchange coupling, these materials can be field-driven into the FM Weyl semimetal ($n=0$) or FM axion insulator states ($n \geq 1$). Finally, in two dimensions we reveal these systems to show intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall and AFM axion insulator states, as well as quantum Hall state, achieved under external magnetic field, but without Landau levels. Our results provide a solid computational proof that MnSb$_2$Te$_4$, is not topologically trivial as was previously believed that opens possibilities of realization of a wealth of topologically-nontrivial states in the (MnSb$_2$Te$_4$)$\cdot$(Sb$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ family.
