Accurate near-threshold model for ultracold KRb dimers from interisotope Feshbach spectroscopy

We investigate magnetic Feshbach resonances in two different ultracold K-Rb mixtures. Information on the K(39)-Rb(87) isotopic pair is combined with novel and pre-existing observations of resonance patterns for K(40)-Rb(87). Interisotope resonance spectroscopy improves significantly our near-threshold model for scattering and bound-state calculations. Our analysis determines the number of bound states in singlet/triplet potentials and establishes precisely near threshold parameters for all K-Rb pairs of interest for experiments with both atoms and molecules. In addition, the model verifies the validity of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation at the present level of accuracy.

Degenerate Bose-Bose mixture in a three-dimensional optical lattice

We produce a heteronuclear quantum degenerate mixture of two bosonic species, $^{87}$Rb and $^{41}$K, in a three-dimensional optical lattice. On raising the lattice barriers, we observe the disapperance of the inference pattern of the heavier $^{87}$Rb, shifting toward shallower lattice depths in the presence of a minor fraction of $^{41}$K. This effect is sizable and requires only a marginal overlap between the two species. We compare our results with similar findings reported for Fermi-Bose mixtures and discuss the interpretation scenarios proposed to date, arguing that the explanation may be linked to the increased effective mass due to the interspecies interactions.

Feshbach resonances in ultracold K(39)

We discover several magnetic Feshbach resonances in collisions of ultracold K(39) atoms, by studying atom losses and molecule formation. Accurate determination of the magnetic-field resonance locations allows us to optimize a quantum collision model for potassium isotopes. We employ the model to predict the magnetic-field dependence of scattering lengths and of near-threshold molecular levels. Our findings will be useful to plan future experiments on ultracold potassium atoms and molecules.

39-K Bose-Einstein condensate with tunable interactions

We produce a Bose-Einstein condensate of 39-K atoms. Condensation of this species with naturally small and negative scattering length is achieved by a combination of sympathetic cooling with 87-Rb and direct evaporation, exploiting the magnetic tuning of both inter- and intra-species interactions at Feshbach resonances. We explore tunability of the self-interactions by studying the expansion and the stability of the condensate. We find that a 39-K condensate is interesting for future experiments requiring a weakly interacting Bose gas.

Collisional properties of sympathetically cooled $^{39}$K

We report the experimental evidence of the sympathetic cooling of $^{39}$K with $^{87}$Rb down to 1 $μ$K, obtained in a novel tight confining magnetic trap. This allowed us to perform the first direct measurement of the elastic cross section of $^{39}$K below 50 $μ$K. The result obtained for the triplet scattering length, $a_T = -51(7)$ Bohr radii, agrees with previous results derived from photoassociation spectra and from Feshbach spectroscopy of $^{40}$K.

Towards a Bose-Glass of ultracold atoms in a disordered crystal of light

Starting from one-dimensional Mott Insulators, we use a bichromatic optical lattice to add controlled disorder to an ideal optical crystal where bosonic atoms are pinned by repulsive interactions. Increasing disorder, we observe a broadening of the Mott Insulator resonances and the transition to an insulating state with a flat density of excitations, suggesting the formation of a Bose-Glass.

Effect of interactions on the localization of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a quasi-periodic lattice

The transport properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a 1D incommensurate bichromatic lattice are investigated both theoretically and experimentally. We observe a blockage of the center of mass motion with low atom number, and a return of motion when the atom number is increased. Solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation show how the localization due to the quasi-disorder introduced by the incommensurate bichromatic lattice is affected by the interactions.

Control of the interaction in a Fermi-Bose mixture

We control the interspecies interaction in a two-species atomic quantum mixture by tuning the magnetic field at a Feshbach resonance. The mixture is composed by fermionic 40K and bosonic 87Rb. We observe effects of the large attractive and repulsive interaction energy across the resonance, such as collapse or a reduced spatial overlap of the mixture, and we accurately locate the resonance position and width. Understanding and controlling instabilities in this mixture opens the way to a variety of applications, including formation of heteronuclear molecular quantum gases.

Intense slow beams of bosonic potassium isotopes

We report on an experimental realization of a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap (2D-MOT) that allows the generation of cold atomic beams of 39K and 41K bosonic potassium isotopes. The high measured fluxes up to 1.0x10^11 atoms/s and low atomic velocities around 33 m/s are well suited for a fast and reliable 3D-MOT loading, a basilar feature for new generation experiments on Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute atomic samples. We also present a simple multilevel theoretical model for the calculation of the light-induced force acting on an atom moving in a MOT. The model gives a good agreement between predicted and measured flux and velocity values for our 2D-MOT.

Effect of optical disorder and single defects on the expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional waveguide

We investigate the one-dimensional expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical guide in the presence of a random potential created with optical speckles. With the speckle the expansion of the condensate is strongly inhibited. A detailed investigation has been carried out varying the experimental conditions and checking the expansion when a single optical defect is present. The experimental results are in good agreement with numerical calculations based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Upper limits on gravitational waves emission in association with the Dec 27 2004 giant flare of SGR1806-20

At the time when the giant flare of SGR1806-20 occurred, the AURIGA "bar" gw detector was on the air with a noise performance close to stationary gaussian. This allows to set relevant upper limits, at a number of frequencies in the vicinities of 900 Hz, on the amplitude of the damped gw wave trains, which, according to current models, could have been emitted, due to the excitation of normal modes of the star associated with the peak in X-rays luminosity.

Unstable regimes for a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

We report on the experimental characterization of energetic and dynamical instability, two mechanisms responsible for the breakdown of Bloch waves in a Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with a 1D optical lattice. A clear separation of these two regimes is obtained performing measurements at different temperatures of the atomic sample. The timescales of the two processes have been determined by measuring the losses induced in the condensate. A simple phenomenological model is introduced for energetic instability while a full comparison is made between the experiment and the 3D Gross-Pitaevskii theory that accounts for dynamical instability.

A Bose-Einstein condensate in a random potential

An optical speckle potential is used to investigate the static and dynamic properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of disorder. For strong disorder the condensate is localized in the deep wells of the potential. With smaller levels of disorder, stripes are observed in the expanded density profile and strong damping of dipole and quadrupole oscillations is seen. Uncorrelated frequency shifts of the two modes are measured for a weak disorder and are explained using a sum-rules approach and by the numerical solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Atom Interferometry in a Vertical Optical Lattice

We have studied the interference of degenerate quantum gases in a vertical optical lattice. The coherence of the atoms leads to an interference pattern when the atoms are released from the lattice. This has been shown for a Bose-Einstein condensate in early experiments. Here we demonstrate that also for fermions an interference pattern can be observed provided that the momentum distribution is smaller then the recoil momentum of the lattice. Special attention is given to the role of interactions which wash out the interference pattern for a condensate but do not affect a spin polarized Fermi gas, where collisions at ultra cold temperatures are forbidden. Comparing the interference of the two quantum gases we find a clear superiority of fermions for trapped atom interferometry.

Collisionally Induced Transport in Periodic Potentials

We study the transport of ultra cold atoms in a tight optical lattice. For identical fermions the system is insulating under an external force while for bosonic atoms it is conducting. This reflects the different collisional properties of the particles and reveals the role of inter-particle collisions in establishing a macroscopic transport in a perfectly periodic potential. Also in the case of fermions we can induce a transport by creating a collisional regime through the addition of bosons. We investigate the transport as a function of the collisional rate and we observe a transition from a regime in which the mobility increases with increasing collisional rate to one in which it decreases. We compare our data with a theoretical model for electron transport in solids introduced by Esaki and Tsu.

Radio Frequency Selective Addressing of Localized Particles in a Periodic Potential

We study the localization and addressability of ultra cold atoms in a combined parabolic and periodic potential. Such a potential supports the existence of localized stationary states and we show that using a radio frequency field allows to selectively address the atoms in these states. This method is used to measure the energy and momentum distribution of the atoms in the localized states. We also discuss possible extensions of this scheme to address and manipulate particles in single lattice sites.

Observation of dynamical instability for a Bose-Einstein condensate in a moving 1D optical lattice

We have experimentally studied the unstable dynamics of a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a 1D moving optical lattice. The lifetime of the condensate in such a potential exhibits a dramatic dependence on the quasimomentum state. This is unambiguously attributed to the onset of dynamical instability, after a comparison with the predictions of the Gross-Pitaevskii theory. Deeply in the unstable region we observe the rapid appearance of complex structures in the atomic density profile, as a consequence of the condensate phase uniformity breakdown.

Atom interferometry with trapped Fermi gases

We realize an interferometer with an atomic Fermi gas trapped in an optical lattice under the influence of gravity. The single-particle interference between the eigenstates of the lattice results in macroscopic Bloch oscillations of the sample. The absence of interactions between fermions allows a time-resolved study of many periods of the oscillations, leading to a sensitive determination of the acceleration of gravity. The experiment proves the superiorness of non interacting fermions with respect to bosons for precision interferometry, and offers a way for the measurement of forces with microscopic spatial resolution.
