Insulating Behavior of a Trapped Ideal Fermi Gas

We investigate theoretically and experimentally the center-of-mass motion of an ideal Fermi gas in a combined periodic and harmonic potential. We find a crossover from a conducting to an insulating regime as the Fermi energy moves from the first Bloch band into the bandgap of the lattice. The conducting regime is characterized by an oscillation of the cloud about the potential minimum, while in the insulating case the center of mass remains on one side of the potential.

Optically-induced lensing effect on a Bose-Einstein condensate expanding in a moving lattice

We report the experimental observation of a lensing effect on a Bose-Einstein condensate expanding in a moving 1D optical lattice. The effect of the periodic potential can be described by an effective mass dependent on the condensate quasi-momentum. By changing the velocity of the atoms in the frame of the optical lattice we induce a focusing of the condensate along the lattice direction. The experimental results are compared with the numerical predictions of an effective 1D theoretical model. Besides, a precise band spectroscopy of the system is carried out by looking at the real-space propagation of the atomic wavepacket in the optical lattice.

Expansion of a Fermi gas interacting with a Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the expansion of an atomic Fermi gas interacting attractively with a Bose-Einstein condensate. We find that the interspecies interaction affects dramatically both the expansion of the Fermi gas and the spatial distribution of the cloud in trap. We observe indeed a slower evolution of the radial-to-axial aspect ratio which reveals the importance of the mutual attraction between the two samples during the first phase of the expansion. For large atom numbers, we also observe a bimodal momentum distribution of the Fermi gas, which reflects directly the distribution of the mixture in trap. This effect allows us to extract information on the dynamics of the system at the collapse.

Superfluid current disruption in a chain of weakly coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

We report the experimental observation of the disruption of the superfluid atomic current flowing through an array of weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates. The condensates are trapped in an optical lattice superimposed on a harmonic magnetic potential. The dynamical response of the system to a change of the magnetic potential minimum along the optical lattice axis goes from a coherent oscillation (superfluid regime) to a localization of the condensates in the harmonic trap ("classical" insulator regime). The localization occurs when the initial displacement is larger than a critical value or, equivalently, when the velocity of the wavepacket's center of mass is larger than a critical velocity dependent on the tunnelling rate between adjacent sites.

Superradiant light scattering from a moving Bose-Einstein condensate

We investigate the interaction of a moving BEC with a far detuned laser beam. Superradiant Rayleigh scattering arises from the spontaneous formation of a matter-wave grating due to the interference of two wavepackets with different momenta. The system is described by the CARL-BEC model which is a generalization of the Gross-Pitaevskii model to include the self-consistent evolution of the scattered field. The experiment gives evidence of a damping of the matter-wave grating which depends on the initial velocity of the condensate. We describe this damping in terms of a phase-diffusion decoherence process, in good agreement with the experimental results.

Production of a Fermi gas of atoms in an optical lattice

We prepare a degenerate Fermi gas of potassium atoms by sympathetic cooling with rubidium atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice. In a tight lattice we observe a change of the density of states of the system, which is a signature of quasi two dimensional confinement. We also find that the dipolar oscillations of the Fermi gas along the tight lattice are almost completely suppressed.

Mean-field analysis of the stability of a K-Rb Fermi-Bose mixture

We compare the experimental stability diagram of a Fermi-Bose mixture of K-40 and Rb-87 atoms with attractive interaction to the predictions of a mean-field theoretical model. We discuss how this comparison can be used to give a better estimate of the interspecies scattering length, which is currently known from collisional measurements with larger uncertainty.

Collisional properties of ultracold K-Rb mixtures

We determine the inter-species s-wave triplet scattering length a3 for all K-Rb isotopic mixtures by measuring the cross-section for collisions between 41K and 87Rb in different temperature regimes. The positive value a3=+163(+57,-12)a0 ensures the stability of binary 41K-87Rb Bose-Einstein condensates. For the fermion-boson mixture 40K-87Rb we obtain a large and negative scattering length which implies an efficient sympathetic cooling of the fermionic species down to the degenerate regime.

Magnetic control of the interaction in ultracold K-Rb mixtures

We predict the presence of several magnetic Feshbach resonances in selected Zeeman sublevels of the isotopic pairs K(40)-Rb(87) and K(41)-Rb(87) at magnetic fields up to 1000 G. Positions and widths are determined combining a new measurement of the K(40)-Rb(87) inelastic cross section with recent experimental results on both isotopes. The possibility of driving a K-Rb mixtures from the weak to the strong interacting regime tuning the applied field should allow to achieve the optimal conditions for boson-induced Cooper pairing in a multi component K(40)-Rb(87) atomic gas and for the production of ultracold polar molecules.

Dipolar oscillations in a quantum degenerate Fermi-Bose atomic mixture

We study the dynamics of coupled dipolar oscillations in a Fermi-Bose mixture of $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb atoms. This low-energy collective mode is strongly affected by the interspecies interactions. Measurements are performed in the dynamical and quantum degenerate regimes and evidence the crucial role of the statistical properties of the mixture. At the onset of quantum degeneracy, we investigate the role of Pauli blocking and superfluidity for K and Rb atoms, respectively, resulting in a change in the collisional interactions.

Collective excitations of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a 1D optical lattice

We study low-lying collective modes of a horizontally elongated 87Rb condensate produced in a 3D magnetic harmonic trap with the addition of a 1D periodic potential which is provided by a laser standing-wave along the horizontal axis. While the transverse breathing mode results unperturbed, quadrupole and dipole oscillations along the optical lattice are strongly modified. Precise measurements of the collective mode frequencies at different height of the optical barriers provide a stringent test of the theoretical model recently introduced [M.Kraemer et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 180404 (2002)].

Fermi-Bose quantum degenerate ^40 K - ^87 Rb mixture with attractive interaction

We report on the achievement of simultaneous quantum degeneracy in a mixed gas of fermionic ^40 K and bosonic ^87 Rb. Potassium is cooled to 0.3 times the Fermi temperature by means of an efficient thermalization with evaporatively cooled rubidium. Direct measurement of the collisional cross-section confirms a large interspecies attraction. This interaction is shown to affect the expansion of the Bose-Einstein condensate released form the magnetic trap, where it is immersed in the Fermi sea.

Enhancement of the scissors mode of an expanding Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the time-evolution of the scissors mode of a Bose-Einstein condensate during the ballistic expansion after release from the magnetic trap. We show that despite the nontrivial character of the superfluid expansion, the sinusoidal behavior of the scissor oscillations is recovered after an asymptotic expansion, with an enhancement of the final amplitude. We investigate this phenomenon with a condensate held in an elongated magnetostatic potential, whose particular shape allows for the excitation of the scissors mode.

A two atomic species superfluid

We produce a quantum degenerate mixture composed by two Bose-Einstein condensates of different atomic species, 41 K and 87 Rb. We study the dynamics of the superfluid system in an elongated magnetic trap, where off-axis collisions between the two interacting condensates induce scissors-like oscillation.

Dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate at finite temperature in an atomoptical coherence filter

The macroscopic coherent tunneling through the barriers of a periodic potential is used as an atomoptical filter to separate the condensate and the thermal components of a $^{87}$Rb mixed cloud. We condense in the combined potential of a laser standing-wave superimposed on the axis of a cigar-shape magnetic trap and induce condensate dipole oscillation in the presence of a static thermal component. The oscillation is damped due to interaction with the thermal fraction and we investigate the role played by the periodic potential in the damping process.

Bose-Einstein Condensates in a 1D Optical Lattice

We give an overview on current experiments on Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice. We introduce measurements of ground state, tunnelling and dynamical properties as well as investigations of atom optical applications and thermodynamical properties. Measurements of the coherent atomic current in an array of Josephson junctions and the critical velocity for the breakdown of superfluid motion are discussed in detail.

Quasi 2D Bose-Einstein condensation in an optical lattice

We study the phase transition of a gas of Rb atoms to quantum degeneracy in the combined potential of a harmonically confining magnetic trap and the periodic potential of an optical lattice. For high optical lattice potentials we observe a significant change in the temperature dependency of the population of the ground state of the system. The experimental results are explained by the subsequent formation of quasi 2D condensates in the single lattice sites.
