The expectation of cosmic ray proton and helium energy spectrum below 4 PeV measured by LHAASO

Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory(LHAASO) is a composite cosmic ray observatory consisting of three detector arrays: kilometer square array (KM2A) which includes the electromagnetic detector array and muon detector array, water Cherenkov detector array (WCDA) and wide field of view Cherenkov telescope array (WFCTA). One of the main scientific objectives of LHAASO is to precisely measure the cosmic rays energy spectrum of individual components from 1014 eV to 1018 eV. The hybrid observation will be employed by LHAASO experiment, in which the lateral and longitudinal distributions of the extensive air shower can be observed simultaneously. Thus many kinds of parameters can be used for primary nuclei identification. In this paper, high purity cosmic ray simulation samples of light nuclei component are obtained through Multi-Variable Analysis. The apertures of 1/4 LHAASO array for pure proton and mixed proton and helium (H&He) samples are 900 m2Sr and 1800 m2Sr respectively. A prospect of proton and H&He spectra from 100 TeV to 4 PeV is discussed.

Beam Extraction From The Recycler Ring To P1 Line At Fermilab

The transfer line for beam extraction from the Recycler ring to P1 line provides a way to deliver 8 GeV kinetic energy protons from the Booster to the Delivery ring, via the Recycler, using existing beam transport lines, and without the need for new civil construction. It was designed in 2012. The kicker magnets at RR520 and the lambertson magnet at RR522 in the RR were installed in 2014 Summer Shutdown, the elements of RR to P1 Stub (permanent quads, trim quads, correctors, BPMs, the toroid at 703 and vertical bending dipole at V703 (ADCW) were installed in 2015 Summer Shutdown. On Tuesday, June 21, 2016, beam line from the Recycler Ring to P1 line was commissioned. The detailed results will be presented in this report.

Direct focusing error correction with ring-wide TBT beam position data

Turn-By-Turn (TBT) betatron oscillation data is a very powerful tool in studying machine optics. Hundreds and thousands of turns of free oscillations are taken in just few tens of milliseconds. With beam covering all positions and angles at every location TBT data can be used to diagnose focusing errors almost instantly. This paper describes a new approach that observes focusing error collectively over all available TBT data to find the optimized quadrupole strength, one location at a time. Example will be shown and other issues will be discussed.

Observation of one electron charge in an enhancement-mode InAs single electron transistor at 4.2K

We propose and demonstrate experimentally a novel design of single-electron quantum dots. The structure consists of a narrow band gap quantum well that can undergo a transition from the hole accumulation regime to the electron inversion regime in a single-top-gate transistor configuration. We have observed large size quantization and Coulomb charging energies over 10meV. This quantum dot design can be especially important for scalable quantum computing.

Scalable Quantum Computing with "Enhancement" Quantum Dots

We propose a novel scheme of solid state realization of a quantum computer based on single spin "enhancement mode" quantum dots as building blocks. In the enhancement quantum dots, just one electron can be brought into initially empty dot, in contrast to depletion mode dots based on expelling of electrons from multi-electron dots by gates. The quantum computer architectures based on depletion dots are confronted by several challenges making scalability difficult. These challenges can be successfully met by the approach based on ehnancement mode, capable of producing square array of dots with versatile functionalities. These functionalities allow transportation of qubits, including teleportation, and error correction based on straightforward one- and two-qubit operations. We describe physical properties and demonstrate experimental characteristics of enhancement quantum dots and single-electron transistors based on InAs/GaSb composite quantum wells. We discuss the materials aspects of quantum dot quantum computing, including the materials with large spin splitting such as InAs, as well as perspectives of enhancement mode approach in materials such as Si.

On demand single photon source using a nanoscale metal-insulator-semiconductor capacitor

We propose an on-demand single photon source for quantum cryptography using a metal-insulator-semiconductor quantum dot capacitor structure. The main component in the semiconductor is a p-doped quantum well, and the cylindrical gate under consideration is only nanometers in diameter. As in conventional metal-insulator-semiconductor capacitors, our system can also be biased into the inversion regime. However, due to the small gate area, at the onset of inversion there are only a few electrons residing in a quantum dot. In addition, because of the strong size quantization and large Coulomb energy, the number of electrons can be precisely controlled by the gate voltage. After holding just one electron in the inversion layer, the capacitor is quickly biased back to the flat band condition, and the subsequent radiative recombination across the bandgap results in single photon emission. We present numerical simulation results of a semiconductor heterojunction and discuss the merits of this single photon source.

Quantum steering of electron wave function in an InAs Y-branch switch

We report experiments on gated Y-branch switches made from InAs ballistic electron wave guides. We demonstrate that gating modifies the electron wave functions as well as their interference pattern, causing the anti-correlated, oscillatory transconductances. Such previously unexpected phenomenon provides evidence of steering the electron wave function in a multi-channel transistor structure.

Quantum Beating in Ring Conductance: Observation of Spin Chiral States and Berry's phase

Using singly connected rings with a collimating contact to current leads, we have observed the spin quantum beating in the Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations. We demonstrate that the beating is a result of the superposition of two independent interference patterns associated with two orthogonal spin chiral states arising from intrinsic spin-orbit interactions. Our work provides the conclusive evidence of the spin Berry's phase in the conductance of quantum rings.

Characterization of one-dimensional quantum channels in InAs/AlSb

We report the magnetoresistance characteristics of one-dimensional electrons confined in a single InAs quantum well sandwiched between AlSb barriers. As a result of a novel nanofabrication scheme that utilizes a 3nm-shallow wet chemical etching to define the electrostatic lateral confinement, the system is found to possess three important properties: specular boundary scattering, a strong lateral confinement potential, and a conducting channel width that is approximately the lithography width. Ballistic transport phenomena, including the quenching of the Hall resistance, the last Hall plateau, and a strong negative bend resistance, are observed at 4K in cross junctions with sharp corners. In a ring geometry, we have observed Aharonov-Bohm interference that exhibits characteristics different from those of the GaAs counterpart due to the ballistic nature of electron transport and the narrowness of the conducting channel width.
