Hall coefficient and Hc2 in underdoped LaFeAsO0.95F0.05

The electrical resistivity and Hall coefficient of LaFeAsO0.95F0.05 polycrystalline samples were measured in pulsed magnetic fields up to m0H = 60 T from room temperature to 1.5 K. The resistance of the normal state shows a negative temperature coefficient (dr/dT < 0) below 70 K for this composition, indicating insulating ground state in underdoped LaFeAsO system in contrast to heavily doped compound. The charge carrier density obtained from Hall effect can be described as constant plus a thermally activated term with an energy gap DE = 630 K. Upper critical field, Hc2, estimated from resistivity measurements, exceeds 75 T with zero-field Tc = 26.3 K, suggesting an unconventional nature for superconductivity.

Ordered magnetic phases of the frustrated spin-dimer compound Ba3Mn2O8

Ba3Mn2O8 is a spin-dimer compound based on pairs of S=1, 3d^2, Mn^{5+} ions arranged on a triangular lattice. Antiferromagnetic intradimer exchange leads to a singlet ground state in zero-field. Here we present the first results of thermodynamic measurements for single crystals probing the high-field ordered states of this material associated with closing the spin gap to the excited triplet states. Specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, and torque magnetometry measurements were performed in magnetic fields up to 32 T and temperatures down to 20 mK. For fields above H_{c1} ~ 8.7 T, these measurements reveal a single magnetic phase for H parallel to c, but two distinct phases (approximately symmetric about the center of the phase diagram) for H perpendicular to c. Analysis of the simplest possible spin Hamiltonian describing this system yields candidates for these ordered states corresponding to a simple spiral structure for H parallel to c, and to two distinct modulated phases for H perpendicular to c. Both single-ion anisotropy and geometric frustration play crucial roles in defining the phase diagram.

Spin Dynamics of $Ni Cl_2-4SC(NH_2)_2$ in the Field-Induced Ordered Phase

$Ni Cl_2$-$4SC(NH_2)_2$ (known as DTN) is a spin-1 material with a strong single-ion anisotropy that is regarded as a new candidate for Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of spin degrees of freedom. We present a systematic study of the low-energy excitation spectrum of DTN in the field-induced magnetically ordered phase by means of high-field electron spin resonance measurements at temperatures down to 0.45 K. We argue that two gapped modes observed in the experiment can be consistently interpreted within a four-sublattice antiferromagnet model with a finite interaction between two tetragonal subsystems and unbroken axial symmetry. The latter is crucial for the interpretation of the field-induced ordering in DTN in terms of BEC.

Using magnetostriction to measure the spin-spin correlation function and magnetoelastic coupling in the quantum magnet NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$

We report a method for determining the spatial dependence of the magnetic exchange coupling, $dJ/dr$, from magnetostriction measurements of a quantum magnet. The organic Ni $S = 1$ system NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ exhibits lattice distortions in response to field-induced canted antiferromagnetism between $H_{c1} = 2.1$ T and $H_{c2} = 12.6$ T. We are able to model the magnetostriction in terms of uniaxial stress on the sample created by magnetic interactions between neighboring Ni atoms along the c-axis. The uniaxial strain is equal to $(1/E)dJ_c/dx_c < S_{\bf r} \cdot S_{{\bf r}+ {\bf e}_c} >$, where $E$, $J_c$, $x_c$ and ${\bf e}_c$ are the Young's modulus, the nearest neighbor (NN) exchange coupling, the variable lattice parameter, and the relative vector between NN sites along the c-axis. We present magnetostriction data taken at 25 mK together with Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the NN spin-spin correlation function that are in excellent agreement with each other. We have also measured Young's modulus using resonant ultrasound, and we can thus extract $dJ_c/dx_c = 2.5$ K/$Å$, yielding a total change in $J_c$ between $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$ of 5.5 mK or 0.25% in response to an 0.022% change in length of the sample.

Geometric Frustration and Dimensional Reduction at a Quantum Critical Point

We show that the spatial dimensionality of the quantum critical point associated with Bose--Einstein condensation at T=0 is reduced when the underlying lattice comprises a set of layers coupled by a frustrating interaction. Our theoretical predictions for the critical temperature as a function of the chemical potential correspond very well with recent measurements in BaCuSi$_{2}$O$_{6}$ [S. E. Sebastian \textit{et al}, Nature \textbf{411}, 617 (2006)].

Magnetic Excitations in the Spin-1 Anisotropic Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Chain System NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$

NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN) is a quantum S=1 chain system with strong easy-pane anisotropy and a new candidate for the Bose-Einstein condensation of the spin degrees of freedom. ESR studies of magnetic excitations in DTN in fields up to 25 T are presented. Based on analysis of the single-magnon excitation mode in the high-field spin-polarized phase and previous experimental results [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 077204 (2006)], a revised set of spin-Hamiltonian parameters is obtained. Our results yield $D=8.9$ K, $J_c=2.2$ K, and $J_{a,b}=0.18$ K for the anisotropy, intrachain, and interchain exchange interactions, respectively. These values are used to calculate the antiferromagnetic phase boundary, magnetization and the frequency-field dependence of two-magnon bound-state excitations predicted by theory and observed in DTN for the first time. Excellent quantitative agreement with experimental data is obtained.

Direct transition from a disordered to a multiferroic phase on a triangular lattice

Competing interactions and geometric frustration provide favourable conditions for exotic states of matter. Such competition often causes multiple phase transitions as a function of temperature and can lead to magnetic structures that break inversion symmetry, thereby inducing ferroelectricity [1-4]. Although this phenomenon is understood phenomenologically [3-4], it is of great interest to have a conceptually simpler system in which ferroelectricity appears coincident with a single magnetic phase transition. Here we report the first such direct transition from a paramagnetic and paraelectric phase to an incommensurate multiferroic in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO4)2 (RFMO). A magnetic field extinguishes the electric polarization when the symmetry of the magnetic order changes and ferroelectricity is only observed when the magnetic structure has chirality and breaks inversion symmetry. Multiferroic behaviour in RFMO provides a theoretically tractable example of ferroelectricity from competing spin interactions. A Landau expansion of symmetry-allowed terms in the free energy demonstrates that the chiral magnetic order of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet gives rise to a pseudoelectric field, whose temperature dependence agrees with that observed experimentally.

Correlated enhancement of Hc2 and Jc in carbon nanotube-doped MgB2

The use of MgB2 in superconducting applications still awaits for the development of a MgB2-based material where both current-carrying performance and critical magnetic field are optimized simultaneously. We achieved this by doping MgB2 with double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) as a source of carbon in polycrystalline samples. The optimum nominal DWCNT content for increasing the critical current density, Jc is in the range 2.5-10%at depending on field and temperature. Record values of the upper critical field, Hc2(4K) = 41.9 T (with extrapolated Hc2(0) ~ 44.4 T) are reached in a bulk sample with 10%at DWCNT content. The measured Hc2 vs T in all samples are successfully described using a theoretical model for a two-gap superconductor in the dirty limit first proposed by Gurevich et al.

Magnetostriction in the Bose-Einstein Condensate quantum magnet NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2

The quantum magnet NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ is a candidate for observing Bose-Einstein Condensation of spin degrees of freedom in applied magnetic fields. An XY antiferromagnetic ordered state occurs in a dome-shaped region of the temperature-field phase diagram between H$_{c1}$ = 2.1 T and H$_{c2}$ = 12.6 T and below 1.2 K. BEC corresponds to the field-induced quantum phase transition into the ordered state. We investigate magnetostriction in single crystals of this compound at dilution refrigerator temperatures in magnetic fields up to 18 T, and as a function of magnetic field angle. We show that significant changes in the lattice parameters are induced by magnetic fields, and argue that these result from antiferromagnetic couplings between the Ni spins along the tetragonal c-axis. The magnetic phase diagram as a function of temperature, field, and field angle can be extracted from these data. We discuss the implications of these results to Bose-Einstein Condensation in this system.

Dimensional reduction at a quantum critical point

Competition between electronic ground states near a quantum critical point (QCP) - the location of a zero-temperature phase transition driven solely by quantum-mechanical fluctuations - is expected to lead to unconventional behaviour in low-dimensional systems. New electronic phases of matter have been predicted to occur in the vicinity of a QCP by two-dimensional theories, and explanations based on these ideas have been proposed for significant unsolved problems in condensed-matter physics, such as non-Fermi-liquid behaviour and high-temperature superconductivity. But the real materials to which these ideas have been applied are usually rendered three-dimensional by a finite electronic coupling between their component layers; a two-dimensional QCP has not been experimentally observed in any bulk three-dimensional system, and mechanisms for dimensional reduction have remained the subject of theoretical conjecture. Here we show evidence that the Bose-Einstein condensate of spin triplets in the three-dimensional Mott insulator BaCuSi2O6 provides an experimentally verifiable example of dimensional reduction at a QCP. The interplay of correlations on a geometrically frustrated lattice causes the individual two-dimensional layers of spin-1/2 Cu2+ pairs (spin dimers) to become decoupled at the QCP, giving rise to a two-dimensional QCP characterized by power law scaling distinctly different from that of its three-dimensional counterpart. Thus the very notion of dimensionality can be said to acquire an 'emergent' nature: although the individual particles move on a three-dimensional lattice, their collective behaviour occurs in lower-dimensional space.

Non-local Magnetic Field-tuned Quantum Criticality in Cubic CeIn_{3-x}Sn_x (x=~0.25)

We show that antiferromagnetism in lightly (~8 %) Sn-doped CeIn_3 terminates at a critical field μ_0H_c= 42 \pm 2 T. Electrical transport and thermodynamic measurements reveal that the effective mass $m^\ast$ does not diverge, suggesting that cubic CeIn_3 is representative of a critical spin-density wave (SDW) scenario, unlike the local quantum critical points reported in lower-symmetry systems such as CeCu_{6-x}Au_x and YbRh_2Si_{2-x}Ge_x. The existence of a maximum in m* at a lower field μ_0H_x = 30 \pm 1 T may be interpreted as a field-induced crossover from local moment to SDW behavior as the magnitude of the antiferromagnetic order parameter falls below the Fermi bandwidth.

Spin-Triplet Excitons in the $S=1/2$ Gapped Antiferromagnet BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$: Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Studies

BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$, a $S=1/2$ quantum antiferromagnet with a double-layer structure of Cu$^{2+}$ ions in a distorted planar-rectangular coordination and with a dimerized spin singlet ground state, is studied by means of the electron paramagnetic resonance technique. It is argued that multiple absorptions observed at low temperatures are intimately related to a thermally-activated spin-triplet exciton superstructure. Analysis of the angular dependence of exciton modes in BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ allows us to accurately estimate anisotropy parameters. In addition, the temperature dependence of EPR intensity and linewidth is discussed.

On the Bose-Einstein Condensation of Magnons in Cs2CuCl4

In a recent paper \cite{Radu}, Radu \textit{et al.} report experimental results they claim to support Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnons in Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$. It is true that an experimentally measured critical power law scaling exponent in agreement with the BEC universality class would support the realization of a BEC in magnetic systems that order as a canted antiferromagnet. It can be shown, however, that the claim of Radu {\it et al.} is overstated in this instance, because their determination of the critical exponent $ϕ$ relies on a model-dependent theoretical approximation to the critical field $H_{\textrm{c1}}$ for which the associated errors are neglected. We show that when these errors are included, the uncertainty in the obtained exponent is so large that the available experimental data cannot be used to differentiate between contending universality classes.

Phonon Thermal Transport of URu2Si2: Broken Translational Symmetry and Strong-Coupling of the Hidden Order to the Lattice

A dramatic increase in the total thermal conductivity (k) is observed in the Hidden Order (HO) state of single crystal URu2Si2. Through measurements of the thermal Hall conductivity, we explicitly show that the electronic contribution to k is extremely small, so that this large increase in k is dominated by phonon conduction. An itinerant BCS/mean-field model describes this behavior well: the increase in kappa is associated with the opening of a large energy gap at the Fermi Surface, thereby decreasing electron-phonon scattering. Our analysis implies that the Hidden Order parameter is strongly coupled to the lattice, suggestive of a broken symmetry involving charge degrees of freedom.

Irreversible dynamics of the phase boundary in U(Ru0.9)Rh0.04)2Si2 and implications for ordering

We report measurements and analysis of the specific heat and magnetocaloric effect at the phase boundary into the single magnetic field-induced phase (phase II) of U(Ru{0.96}Rh{0.04})2Si2, which yield striking similarities to the valence transition of Yb{1-x}YxInCu4. To explain these similarities, we propose a bootstrap mechanism by which a structural distortion causes an electric quadrupolar order parameter within phase II to become coupled to the 5f-electron hybridization, giving rise to a valence change at the transition.

Characteristic BEC scaling close to Quantum Critical Point in BaCuSi2O6

We report an experimental determination of the phase boundary between a quantum paramagnetic state and the proposed spin Bose-Einstein condensate of triplons in the spin gap compound BaCuSi2O6. The ordering temperature is related to the proximity to a quantum critical point at the lower critical magnetic field H_c1 = 23.52 +/- 0.03T by a power law parameterized by critical exponent nu. We obtain an experimental estimate of nu = 0.63 +/- 0.03 which is in good agreement with the mean field prediction of nu = 2/3 for the 3D XY model, used to describe the Bose condensation of a 3D dilute interacting Bose gas.

Gamma5 quasiparticles and avoided quantum criticality in U(Ru,Rh)2Si2

We discuss recent specific heat data in high magnetic fields on URu2Si2 and 4% Rh-doped URu2Si2 as well as previously published de Haas-van Alphen data at lower magnetic fields in pure URu2Si2; both of which are consistent with quasiparticle bands formed from a hybridization between 5f-electron Gamma5 doublets and regular conduction electrons. The system exhibits itinerant electron metamagnetism that gives rise to a putative quantum critical point at \~ 34 -37 T (depending on the % of Rh) that is subsequently unstable to field-induced phases

Bose-Einstein Condensation of S = 1 Ni spin degrees of freedom in NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2

It has recently been suggested that the organic compound NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN) exhibits Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) of the Ni spin degrees of freedom for fields applied along the tetragonal c-axis. The Ni spins exhibit 3D XY-type antiferromagnetic order above a field-induced quantum critical point at $H_{c1} \sim 2$ T. The Ni spin fluid can be characterized as a system of effective bosons with a hard-core repulsive interaction in which the antiferromagnetic state corresponds to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of the phase coherent $S = 1$ Ni spin system. We have investigated the the high-field phase diagram and the occurrence of BEC in DTN by means of specific heat and magnetocaloric effect measurements to dilution refrigerator temperatures. Our results indicate that a key prediction of BEC is satisfied; the magnetic field-temperature quantum phase transition line $H_c(T)-H_{c1} \propto T^α$ approaches a power-law at low temperatures, with an exponent $α= 1.47 \pm 0.06$ at the quantum critical point, consistent with the BEC theory prediction of $α= 1.5$.
