Inhomogeneous level splitting in Pr$_{2-x}$Bi$_x$Ru$_2$O$_7$

We report that Bi doping drives Pr$_x$Bi$_{2-x}$Ru$_2$O$_7$ from an antiferromagnetic insulator ($x=2$) to a metallic paramagnet ($x\approx 1$) with a broad low $T$ maximum in $C/T$. Neutron scattering reveals local low energy spin excitations ($\hbarω\approx 1$ meV) with a spectrum that is unaffected by heating to $k_BT>>\hbarω$. We show that a continuous distribution of splittings of the non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ ground state doublet such as might result from various types of lattice strain can account for all the data.

Quantum critical 5f-electrons avoid singularities in U(Ru,Rh)2Si2

We present specific heat measurements of 4% Rh-doped U(Ru,Rh)2Si2 at magnetic fields above the proposed metamagnetic transition field Hm~34 T, revealing striking similarities to the isotructural Ce analog CeRu2Si2, suggesting that strongly renormalized hybridized band models apply equally well to both systems. The vanishing bandwidths as H --> Hm are consistent with a putative quantum critical point close to Hm. The existence of a phase transition into an ordered phase in the vicinity of Hm for 4% Rh-doped U(Ru,Rh)2Si2, but not for CeRu2Si2, is consistent with a stronger super-exchange in the case of the U 5-f system, with irreversible processes at the transition revealing a strong coupling of the 5f orbitals to the lattice, most suggestive of orbital or electric quadrupolar order.

Resistivity and magnetization of U(Ru$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$)$_2$Si$_2$, $x=$ 2, 2.5, 3 and 4 % in magnetic fields of up to 45 T

This posting contains raw data used for extracting features of the phase diagram and quantum criticality versus magnetic field $B$, temperature $T$ and Rh-doping $x$ that will soon appear in Physical Review Letters, 2004. All of the raw resistivity data is shown while only a selection of the magnetization data is shown for which a sample-out background subtraction was made.

High Field behavior of the Spin Gap compound Sr$_2$Cu(BO$_3$)$_2$

We report magnetization and heat capacity measurements of single crystal samples of the spin gap compound Sr$_2$Cu(BO$_3$)$_2$. Low-field data show that the material has a singlet ground state comprising dimers with intradimer coupling J = 100 K. High field data reveal the role of weak interdimer coupling. For fields that are large compared to the spin gap, triplet excitations are observed for significantly smaller fields than predicted for isolated dimers, indicating that weak inter-dimer coupling leads to triplet delocalization. High field magnetization behavior at low temperatures suggests additional cooperative effects.

Magnetic Field-Induced Condensation of Triplons in Han Purple Pigment BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$

Besides being an ancient pigment, BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ is a quasi-2D magnetic insulator with a gapped spin dimer ground state. The application of strong magnetic fields closes this gap creating a gas of bosonic spin triplet excitations called triplons. The topology of the spin lattice makes BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ an ideal candidate for studying the Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons as a function of the external magnetic field, which acts as a chemical potential. In agreement with quantum Monte Carlo numerical simulations, we observe a distinct lambda-anomaly in the specific heat together with a maximum in the magnetic susceptibility upon cooling down to liquid Helium temperatures.

High Field Specific Heat of 2D Quantum Spin System SrCu2(BO3)2

We report measurements of the specific heat of the quantum spin liquid system SrCu2(BO3)2 in continuous magnetic fields H of up to 33 T. The specific heat vs temperature at zero field shows an anomaly at 8 K, marking the opening of a gap in the spin singlet excitations. At fields H~12 T, we clearly see a second anomaly that shifts to lower temperatures as H is increased. We attribute its origin to single triplet excitations of the singlet dimer ground state. This conclusion is supported by calculations of the specific heat, which reproduce the experimental data, made using the finite temperature Lanczos method to solve a Shastry-Sutherland Hamiltonian including nearest and next-nearest neighbor Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions. The parameters used to fit the data are the exchange constants J = 74 K and J'/J = 0.62, and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya coupling constants |D|=6.1K, and $|D'|=2.2K.

Thermodynamic properties of excess-oxygen-doped La2CuO4.11 near a simultaneous transition to superconductivity and long-range magnetic order

We have measured the specific heat and magnetization {\it versus} temperature in a single crystal sample of superconducting La$_{2}$CuO$_{4.11}$ and in a sample of the same material after removing the excess oxygen, in magnetic fields up to 15 T. Using the deoxygenated sample to subtract the phonon contribution, we find a broad peak in the specific heat, centered at 50 K. This excess specific heat is attributed to fluctuations of the Cu spins possibly enhanced by an interplay with the charge degrees of freedom, and appears to be independent of magnetic field, up to 15 T. Near the superconducting transition $T_{c}$($H$=0)= 43 K, we find a sharp feature that is strongly suppressed when the magnetic field is applied parallel to the crystallographic c-axis. A model for 3D vortex fluctuations is used to scale magnetization measured at several magnetic fields. When the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the c-axis, the only observed effect is a slight shift in the superconducting transition temperature.

A Hierarchically-Organized Phase Diagram near a Quantum Critical Point in URu2Si2

A comprehensive transport study, as a function of both temperature and magnetic field in continuous magnetic fields up to 45 T reveals that URu2Si2 possesses all the essential hallmarks of quantum criticality at temperatures above 5.5 K and fields around 38 T, but then collapses into multiple low temperature phases in a hierarchically-organized phase diagram as the temperature is reduced. Although certain generic features of the phase diagram are very similar to those in the cuprates and heavy fermion superconductors, the existence of multiple ordered hysteretic phases near the field-tuned quantum critical point is presently unique to URu2Si2. This finding suggests the existence of many competing order parameters separated by small energy difference in URu2Si2.

Hot isostatic pressing of powder in tube MgB2 wires

The critical current density (Jc) of hot isostatic pressed (HIPed) MgB2 wires, measured by d.c. transport and magnetization, is compared with that of similar wires annealed at ambient pressure. The HIPed wires have a higher Jc than the annealed wires, especially at high temperatures and magnetic fields, and higher irreversibility field (Hirr). The HIPed wires are promising for applications, with Jc>106 A/cm2 at 5 K and zero field and >104 A/cm2 at 1.5 T and 26.5 K, and Hirr ~ 17 T at 4 K. The improvement is attributed to a high density of structural defects, which are the likely source of vortex pinning. These defects, observed by transmission electron microscopy, include small angle twisting, tilting, and bending boundaries, resulting in the formation of sub-grains within MgB2 crystallites.

Re-entrant hidden order at a metamagnetic quantum critical end point

Magnetization measurements of URu2Si2 in pulsed magnetic fields of 44 T reveal that the hidden order phase is destroyed before appearing in the form of a re-entrant phase between ~ 36 and 39 T. Evidence for conventional itinerant electron metamagnetism at higher temperatures suggests that the re-entrant phase is created in the vicinity of a quantum critical end point.

High Field Studies of the Hidden Order Transition in URu$_2$Si$_2$

We studied in detail the low temperature/high magnetic field phases of URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ single crystals with specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, and magnetoresistance in magnetic fields up to 45 T. Data obtained down to 0.5 K, and extrapolated to T = 0, show a suppression of the hidden order phase at H$_{o}$(0) = 35.9 $\pm$ 0.35 T and the appearance of a new phase for magnetic fields in excess of H$_{1}$(0) = 36.1 $\pm$ 0.35 T observed \textit{only} at temperatures lower than 6 K. In turn, complete suppression of this high field state is attained at a critical magnetic field H$_{2}$(0) = 39.7 $\pm$ 0.35 T. No phase transitions are observed above 40 T. We discuss our results in the context of itinerant vs. localized \textit{f}-electron behavior and consider the implications for the hidden order phase.

Effects of unreacted Mg impurities on the transport properties of MgB2

We synthesized polycrystalline MgB2 from a stoichiometric mixture of Mg and the 11 B isotope under different conditions. All the samples showed bulk superconductivity with Tc = 38~39 K. The samples containing the least amount of unreacted Mg showed the highest Tc and the sharpest transition width (Delta_Tc). A residual resistivity ratio (RRR) of ~ 5.8, and a magnetoresistance (MR), at 40 K, of 12% were obtained for these samples. Moreover, there was no upturn of resistivity in a low temperature region at 10 Tesla. The samples containing appreciable amounts of unreacted Mg showed quite different behaviors; the values of Delta_Tc, RRR, and MR were much larger. An upturn appeared in resistivity of the samples below about 50 K at 10 T and is thought to be due to the unreacted Mg.

Low Temperature Thermal Transport in High Temperature Superconducting BSCCO via Y-doped Insulating Analogue

In order to separate electronic and phonon mechanisms of thermal transport in high temperature superconducting Bi2212, we measured thermal conductivity of single crystals of Y-doped Bi2212, an insulating analogue of pure Bi2212, in the temperature range between 40 mK and 2 K. Temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of insulating samples changes from T$^{1.7}$ between 1 and 2 K to $T^{2.6}$ below 200 mK, indicating saturation of the phonon mean free path with decreasing temperature. Overall, thermal conductivity of the insulating samples (which is due entirely to phonons) is strongly suppressed in comparison to that of the superconducting samples. Therefore, a large (and at the lowest temperatures, predominant) part of the total thermal transport in superconducting Bi2212 is due to electrons.

Unusual kondo behavior in the indium-rich heavy fermion antiferromagnet Ce3Pt4In13

We report the thermodynamic, magnetic, and electronic transport properties of the new ternary intermetallic system (Ce,La)3Pt4In13. Ce3Pt4In13 orders antiferromagnetically at 0.95 K while the non-magnetic compound La3Pt4In13 is a conventional 3.3 K superconductor. Kondo lattice effects appear to limit the entropy associated with the Neel transition to (1/4)Rln2 as an electronic contribution to the specific heat of gamma = 1 J/mole-Ce K2 is observed at TN; roughly 35% of this gamma survives the ordering transition. Hall effect, thermoelectric power, and ambient-pressure resistivity measurements confirm this interpretation. These results suggest that RKKY and Kondo interactions are closely balanced in this compound (TN = TK). Contrary to expectations based on the Doniach Kondo necklace model, applied hydrostatic pressure modestly enhances the magnetic ordering temperature with dTN/dP = +23 mK/kbar. As such Ce3Pt4In13 provides a counterexample to Kondo systems with similar Kondo and RKKY energy scales wherein applied pressure enhances TK at the expense of the ordered magnetic state.

On the origin of the zero-resistance anomaly in heavy fermion superconducting Ir: a clue from magnetic field and Rh-doping studies

We present the results of the specific heat and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of $CeIr_{1-x}Rh_xIn_5$ for x from 0 to 0.5. As x is increased from 0 both quantities reflect the competition between two effects. The first is a suppression of superconductivity below the bulk transition temperature of T$_c = 0.4$ K, which is due to the pair breaking effect of Rh impurities. The second is an increase in the volume fraction of the superconducting regions above T$_c$, which we attribute to defect-induced strain. Analysis of the H-T phase diagram for CeIrIn$_5$obtained from the bulk probes and resistance measurements points to the filamentary origin of the inhomogeneous superconductivity at T$_ρ\approx 1.2$ K, where the resistance drops to zero. The identical anisotropies in the magnetic field dependence of the specific heat and the resistance anomalies in CeIrIn$_5$ indicate that the filamentary superconductivity is intrinsic, involving electrons from the part of the Fermi surface responsible for bulk superconductivity.

Anisotropic Superconductivity in Epitaxial MgB2 Films

High-quality epitaxial MgB2 thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition with Tc = 39 K offer the opportunity to study the anisotropy and robustness of the superconducting state in magnetic fields. We measure the in-plane electrical resistivity of the films in magnetic fields to 60T and estimate the superconducting upper critical field Hc(0) = 24 +- 3 T for field oriented along the c-axis, and Hab(0) = 30 +- 2 T for field in the plane of the film. We find the zero-temperature coherence lengths xi_c(0) = 30 A and xi_ab(0) = 37 A to be shorter than the calculated electronic mean free path l = 100 +- 50 A, which places our films in the clean limit. The observation of such large upper critical fields from clean limit samples, coupled with the relatively small anisotropy, provides strong evidence of the viability of MgB2 as a technologically important superconductor.

Unconventional superconductivity in CeIrIn$_5$ and CeCoIn$_5$: Specific heat and thermal conductivity studies

Low temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements on the ambient pressure heavy fermion superconductors CeIrIn5 and CeCoIn5 reveal power law temperature dependences of these quantities below T$_c$. The low temperature specific heat in both CeIrIn5 and CeCoIn5 includes T$^2$ terms, consistent with the presence of nodes in the superconducting energy gap. The thermal conductivity data present a T-linear term consistent with the universal limit (CeIrIn5), and a low temperature T$^3$ variation in the clean limit (CeCoIn5), also in accord with prediction for an unconventional superconductor with lines of nodes.
