Excitation Spectra of the ${}^{12}{\rm C}(p,d)$ Reaction near the $\eta'$-Meson Emission Threshold Measured in Coincidence with High-Momentum Protons

The missing mass of the ${}^{12}{\rm C}(p,d)$ reaction has been measured near the $\eta'$-meson emission threshold in coincidence with a high-momentum proton to selectively collect $\eta'$-${}^{11}{\rm C}$ mesic nucleus formation events at GSI, Germany. A 2.5 GeV proton excites a carbon nucleus to form an $\eta'$-mesic nucleus emitting a deuteron forward with an energy of $\sim 1.6$ GeV. The deuteron is momentum-analyzed by the Fragment Separator used as a high-resolution spectrometer to deduce the excitation energy of the residual system. The large-acceptance detector WASA surrounding the target identifies high-momentum protons emitted in the decay of the $\eta'$-mesic nucleus. The measured semi-exclusive spectrum exhibits structures below the threshold though the statistical significance is limited. The spectrum is fitted by theoretically calculated spectra varying optical-potential parameters of the $\eta'$-nucleus interaction. The analysis results indicate $\eta'$-mesic nuclei formation for the real potential depth of $\sim -61$ MeV with a local statistical significance of $3.5 \sigma$ and, taking into account the look-elsewhere effect, a global significance of $2.1 \sigma$.

Performance of newly constructed plastic scintillator barrel in the WASA-FRS experiments and evaluation of radiation damage effects on multi-pixel photon counter

A barrel-shaped plastic scintillation counter with Multi-Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC) readout has been developed and operated in the first WASA-FRS experimental campaign at GSI. The detector was used to measure charged particles emitted from reactions induced by a 2.5 GeV proton beam incident on a carbon target, providing particle identification in combination with momentum reconstruction in a 1 T magnetic field. The performance of this detector, particularly its response to energy deposition and time resolution, was systematically investigated as a function of count rate and total number of irradiating protons. A time resolution of 45-75 ps ($\sigma$), depending on the energy deposition, was achieved. Stable performance was maintained under high-rate conditions up to 1.35 MHz per single counter, with no significant degradation in either signal amplitude or timing response. Radiation-induced damage to the MPPCs was observed primarily as a reduction in signal amplitude, with approximately $35\%$ decrease at an estimated 1 MeV neutron-equivalent fluence of $2.4 \times 10^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$.

Hypernuclear spectroscopy of products from 6Li projectiles on a carbon target at 2 AGeV

A novel experiment, aiming at demonstrating the feasibility of hypernuclear spectroscopy with heavy-ion beams, was conducted. Using the invariant mass method, the spectroscopy of hypernuclear products of 6Li projectiles on a carbon target at 2 AGeV was performed. Signals of the \Lambda-hyperon and 3\Lambda H and 4\Lambda H hypernuclei were observed for final states of p+\pi^-, 3He+\pi^- and 4He+\pi^-, respectively, with significance values of 6.7, 4.7 and 4.9\sigma. By analyzing the proper decay time from secondary vertex distribution with the unbinned maximum likelihood fitting method, their lifetime values were deduced to be $262 ^{+56}_{-43} \pm 45$ ps for \Lambda, $183 ^{+42}_{-32} \pm 37$ ps for 3\Lambda H, and $140 ^{+48}_{-33}\pm 35 $ ps for 4\Lambda H.

Evidence for \eta_{c}(2S) in \psi(3686) \to \gamma K_{S}^{0}K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}

We search for the M1 radiative transition \psi(3686) \to \gamma\eta_{c}(2S) by reconstructing the exclusive \eta_{c}(2S) \to K_{S}^{0}K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^{+}\pi^{-} decay using 1.06 \times 10^8 \psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector. The signal is observed with a statistical significance of greater than 4 standard deviations. The measured mass of the \eta_{c}(2S) is 3646.9 \pm 1.6(stat) \pm 3.6(syst) MeV/c^2, and the width is 9.9 \pm 4.8(stat) \pm 2.9(syst) MeV/c^2. The product branching fraction is measured to be B(\psi(3686) \to \gamma\eta_{c}(2S)) \times B(\eta_{c}(2S) \to K_{S}^{0}K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}) = (7.03 \pm 2.10(stat) \pm 0.70(syst)) \times 10^{-6}. This measurement complements a previous BESIII measurement of \psi(3686) \to \gamma\eta_{c}(2S) with \eta_{c}(2S) \to K_{S}^{0} K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp} and K^{+}K^{-}\pi^{0}.

Study of the near-threshold $\omega\phi$ mass enhancement in doubly OZI suppressed $J/\psi \to \gamma\omega\phi$ decays

A 2.25$\times10^8$ $\jpsi$ event sample accumulated with the BESIII detector is used to study the doubly OZI suppressed decay modes $\jpsi\to\gamma\of$, $\omega\to\ppp$, $\phi\to\kk$. A strong deviation ($>$ 30$\sigma$) from three-body $\jpsi\to\gamma\omega\phi$ phase space is observed near the $\omega\phi$ mass threshold that is consistent with a previous observation reported by the BESII experiment. A partial wave analysis with a tensor covariant amplitude that assumes that the enhancement is due to the presence of a resonance, the X(1810), is performed, and confirms that the spin-parity of the X(1810) is $0^{++}$. The mass and width of the X(1810) are determined to be $M=1795\pm7$(stat)$^{+13}_{-5}$(syst)$\pm$19(mod) MeV/$c^2$ and $\Gamma=95\pm10$(stat)$^{+21}_{-34}$(syst)$\pm$75(mod) MeV/$c^2$, respectively, and the product branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}(\jpsi\to\gamma X(1810))\times{\cal B}(X(1810)\to\of)=(2.00\pm0.08$(stat)$^{+0.45}_{-1.00}$(syst)$\pm$1.30(mod))$\times10^{-4}$. %where the first error is the statistical error and the second the systematical error. These results are consistent within errors with those of the BESII experiment.

Measurements of Baryon Pair Decays of $\chi_{cJ}$ Mesons

Using 106 $\times 10^{6}$ $\psi^{\prime}$ decays collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII, three decays of $\chi_{cJ}$ ($J=0,1,2$) with baryon pairs ($\llb$, $\ssb$, $\SSB$) in the final state have been studied. The branching fractions are measured to be $\cal{B}$$(\chi_{c0,1,2}\rightarrow\Lambda\bar\Lambda) =(33.3 \pm 2.0 \pm 2.6)\times 10^{-5}$, $(12.2 \pm 1.1 \pm 1.1)\times 10^{-5}$, $(20.8 \pm 1.6 \pm 2.3)\times 10^{-5}$; $\cal{B}$$(\chi_{c0,1,2}\rightarrow\Sigma^{0}\bar\Sigma^{0})$ = $(47.8 \pm 3.4 \pm 3.9)\times 10^{-5}$, $(3.8 \pm 1.0 \pm 0.5)\times 10^{-5}$, $(4.0 \pm 1.1 \pm 0.5) \times 10^{-5}$; and $\cal{B}$$(\chi_{c0,1,2}\rightarrow\Sigma^{+}\bar\Sigma^{-})$ = $(45.4 \pm 4.2 \pm 3.0)\times 10^{-5}$, $(5.4 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.5)\times 10^{-5}$, $(4.9 \pm 1.9 \pm 0.7)\times 10^{-5}$, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. Upper limits on the branching fractions for the decays of $\chi_{c1,2}\rightarrow\Sigma^{0}\bar\Sigma^{0}$, $\Sigma^{+}\bar\Sigma^{-}$, are estimated to be $\cal{B}$$(\chi_{c1}\rightarrow\Sigma^{0}\bar\Sigma^{0}) < 6.2\times 10^{-5}$, $\cal{B}$$(\chi_{c2}\rightarrow\Sigma^{0}\bar\Sigma^{0}) < 6.5\times 10^{-5}$, $\cal{B}$$(\chi_{c1}\rightarrow\Sigma^{+}\bar\Sigma^{-}) < 8.7\times 10^{-5}$ and $\cal{B}$$(\chi_{c2}\rightarrow\Sigma^{+}\bar\Sigma^{-}) < 8.8\times 10^{-5}$ at the 90% confidence level.

Precision measurements of branching fractions for $ \psi'\to\pi^0 J\psi$ and $\eta J\psi$

We present a precision study of the $\psip\to\pi^0 J/\psi$ and $\eta J/\psi$ decay modes. The measurements are obtained using $106\times10^6$ $\psi'$ events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $\ee$ collider operating at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the $\psip$ mass. We obtain $\mathcal{B}(\psip\to\pi^0 J/\psi)=(1.26\pm0.02{\rm (stat.)}\pm0.03{\rm (syst.)})\times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(\psip\to\eta J/\psi)=(33.75\pm0.17{\rm (stat.)}\pm0.86{\rm (syst.)})\times 10^{-3}$. The branching fraction ratio $R=\frac{\mathcal{B}(\psip\to\pi^0 J/\psi)}{\mathcal{B}(\psip\to\eta J/\psi)}$ is determined to be $(3.74\pm0.06 {\rm(stat.)}\pm0.04 {\rm(syst.)})\times 10^{-2}$. The precision of these measurements of $\mathcal{B}(\psip\to\pi^{0} J/\psi)$ and $R$ represent a significant improvement over previously published values.

Observation of $\eta_{c}$ decay into $\Sigma^{+}\bar{\Sigma}^{-}$ and $\Xi^{-}\bar{\Xi}^{+}$ final states

Using a data sample of $2.25\times10^{8}$ $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we present the first observation of the decays of $\eta_{c}$ mesons to $\Sigma^{+}\bar{\Sigma}^{-}$ and $\Xi^{-}\bar{\Xi}^{+}$. The branching fractions are measured to be $(2.11\pm0.28_{\rm stat.}\pm0.18_{\rm syst.}\pm0.50_{\rm PDG})\times10^{-3}$ and $(0.89\pm0.16_{\rm stat.}\pm0.08_{\rm syst.}\pm0.21_{\rm PDG})\times10^{-3}$ for $\eta_{c} \to \Sigma^{+}\bar{\Sigma}^{-}$ and $\Xi^{-}\bar{\Xi}^{+}$, respectively. These branching fractions provide important information on the helicity selection rule in charmonium-decay processes.

Study of $\psi(3686)\to\pi^0 h_c, h_c\to\gamma\eta_c$ via $\eta_c$ exclusive decays

The process $\psi(3686) \to \pi^0 h_c, h_c \to \gamma \eta_c$ has been studied with a data sample of $106 \pm 4$ million $\psi(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The mass and width of the $P$-wave charmonium spin-singlet state $h_c(^1P_1)$ are determined by simultaneously fitting distributions of the $\pi^0$ recoil mass for 16 exclusive $\eta_c$ decay modes. The results, $M(\hc) = 3525.31 \pm 0.11 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.14 {\rm (syst.)}$\,MeV/$c^2$ and $\Gamma(\hc) = 0.70 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.22$\,MeV, are consistent with and more precise than previous measurements. We also determine the branching ratios for the 16 exclusive $\eta_c$ decay modes, five of which have not been measured previously. New measurements of the $\eta_c$ line-shape parameters in the $E1$ transition $h_c\to\gamma\eta_c$ are made by selecting candidates in the $h_c$ signal sample and simultaneously fitting the hadronic mass spectra for the 16 $\eta_c$ decay channels. The resulting $\eta_c$ mass and width values are $M(\eta_c) = 2984.49 \pm 1.16 \pm 0.52$\,MeV/$c^2$ and $\Gamma(\eta_c) = 36.4 \pm 3.2 \pm 1.7$\,MeV.

Search for $\eta$ and $\eta'$ Invisible Decays in $J/\psi\to\phi\eta$ and $\phi\eta'$

Using a sample of $(225.3\pm 2.8)\times 10^{6}$ $J/\psi$ decays collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, searches for invisible decays of $\eta$ and $\eta^\prime$ in $J/\psi\to\phi\eta$ and $\phi\eta^\prime$ are performed. Decays of $\phi \to K^{+}K^{-}$ are used to tag the $\eta$ and $\eta^\prime$ decays. No signals above background are found for the invisible decays, and upper limits at the 90% confidence level are determined to be $2.58\times10^{-4}$ for the ratio $\frac{\mathcal{B}(\eta\to\rm{invisible})}{\mathcal{B}(\eta\to\gamma\gamma)}$ and $2.39\times10^{-2}$ for $\frac{\mathcal{B}(\eta^\prime\to\rm{invisible})}{\mathcal{B}(\eta^\prime \to\gamma\gamma)}$.

Search for hadronic transition $\chi_{cJ}\to\eta_{c}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ and observation of $\chi_{cJ}\to K\bar{K}\pi\pi\pi$

Hadronic transitions of $\chi_{cJ}\to \eta_{c}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ (J=0, 1, 2) are searched for using a sample of $1.06\times 10^{8}$ $\psi(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The $\etac$ is reconstructed with $K_{S}^{0}K^{+}\pi^{-}+c.c.$ and $K^{+}K^{-}\pi^{0}$ final states. No signals are observed in any of the three $\chi_{cJ}$ states in either $\etac$ decay mode. At the 90% confidence level, the upper limits are determined to be $\BR(\chi_{c0}\to \eta_{c}\pi^{+}\pi^{-})<0.07%$, $\BR(\chi_{c1}\to \eta_{c}\pi^{+}\pi^{-})<0.32%$, and $\BR(\chi_{c2}\to \eta_{c}\pi^{+}\pi^{-})<0.54%$. The upper limit of $\BR(\chi_{c1}\to \eta_{c}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ is lower than the existing theoretical prediction by almost an order of magnitude. The branching fractions of $\chi_{cJ}\to K_{S}^{0}K^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}+c.c.$, $K^{+}K^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$, $\omega K^{+}K^{-}$ and $\phi\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$ (J=0, 1, 2) are measured for the first time.

Measurement of $\chi_{cJ}$ decaying into $p\bar{n}\pi^{-}$ and $p\bar{n}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$

Using a data sample of $1.06 \times 10^{8}$ $\psip$ events collected with the BESIII detector in 2009, the branching fractions of $\chi_{cJ}\to p\bar{n}\pi^{-}$ and $\chi_{cJ}\to p\bar{n}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$ ($J$=0,1,2) are measured{Throughout the text, inclusion of charge conjugate modes is implied if not stated otherwise.}. The results for $\chi_{c0}\to p\bar{n}\pi^{-}$ and $\chi_{c2}\to p\bar{n}\pi^{-}$ are consistent with, but much more precise than those of previous measurements. The decays of $\chi_{c1}\to p\bar{n}\pi^{-}$ and $\chi_{cJ}\to p\bar{n}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$ are observed for the first time.

Experimental study of psi' decays to K+K- pi^0 and K+K- eta

Using $(106\pm4)\times 10^6$ $\psip$ events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $e^+e^-$ collider, we present measurements of the branching fractions for psi' decays to $K^{+}K^{-}\pi^{0}$ and $K^{+}K^{-}\eta$. In these final states, the decay $\psi'\to K_2^{*}(1430)^+K^-+c.c.$ is observed for the first time, and its branching fraction is measured to be $(7.12\pm{0.62}{\rm (stat.)}^{+1.13}_{-0.61}{\rm (syst.)})\times 10^{-5}$, which indicates a violation of the helicity selection rule in $\psip$ decays. The branching fractions of $\psi'\to K^*(892)^+K^-+c.c., \phi\eta, \phi\pi^0$ are also measured. The measurements are used to test the QCD predictions on charmonium decays.

Observation of $e^{+}e^{-} \to \eta J/\psi$ at center-of-mass energy $sqrt{s}=4.009$ GeV

Using a 478 pb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=4.009$ GeV, the production of $e^{+}e^{-}\to \eta J\psi$ is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of greater than $10\sigma$. The Born cross section is measured to be $(32.1\pm 2.8 \pm 1.3)$ pb, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. Assuming the $\eta J\psi$ signal is from a hadronic transition of the $\psi(4040)$, the fractional transition rate is determined to be ${\cal B}(\psi(4040)\to \eta J\psi)=(5.2\pm 0.5\pm 0.2\pm 0.5)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first, second, and third errors are statistical, systematic, and the uncertainty from the $\psi(4040)$ resonant parameters, respectively. The production of $e^{+}e^{-} \to \pi^0 J\psi$ is searched for, but no significant signal is observed, and ${\cal B}(\psi(4040)\to \pi^0 J\psi) < 2.8 \times 10^{-4}$ is obtained at the 90% confidence level.

Evidence of the direct decay of $\eta_c$ to two photons, $\eta_c\to\gamma\gamma$, is reported, and the product branching fraction is determined to be $\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\to\gamma\eta_c,\eta_c\to \gamma\gamma)=(4.5\pm1.2\pm0.6)\times10^{-6}$, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The branching fraction for $J/\psi\to3\gamma$ is measured to be $(11.3\pm1.8\pm2.0)\times 10^{-6}$ with improved precision.

Observation of chi_{cJ} Decays to \Lambda \Lambda bar\pi^{+}\pi^{-}

Decays of the chi_{cJ} states (J=0,\ 1,\ 2) to \Lambda \Lambda bar\ pi^{+} \pi^{-}, including processes with intermediate \Sigma(1385), are studied through the E1 transition psi'-->\gamma chi_{cJ} using 106 million psi' events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII. This is the first observation of chi_{cJ} decays to the final state \Lambda\Lambda bar \pi^{+}\pi^{-}. The branching ratio of the intermediate process chi_{cJ}-->\Sigma(1385)^{+/-} \bar{\Sigma}(1385)^{-/+} is also measured for the first time, and the results agree with the theoretical predictions based on the color-octet effect.

First observation of the isospin violating decay $J/\psi\rightarrow \Lambda\bar{\Sigma}^{0}+c.c.$

Using a sample of $(225.2\pm 2.8)\times 10^6$ $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we present results of a study of $J/\psi\rightarrow \gamma\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$ and report the first observation of the isospin violating decay $J/\psi\rightarrow\Lambda\bar{\Sigma}^{0}+c.c.$, in which $\bar{\Sigma}^{0}$ decays to $\gamma \bar{\Lambda}$. First observation of the M1 transition $\psi(3686)\to \gamma\eta_c(2S)$

Using a sample of 106 million \psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we have made the first measurement of the M1 transition between the radially excited charmonium S-wave spin-triplet and the radially excited S-wave spin-singlet states: \psi(3686)\to\gamma\eta_c(2S). Analyses of the processes \psi(2S)\to \gamma\eta_c(2S) with \eta_c(2S)\to \K_S^0 K\pi and K^+K^-\pi^0 gave an \eta_c(2S) signal with a statistical significance of greater than 10 standard deviations under a wide range of assumptions about the signal and background properties. The data are used to obtain measurements of the \eta_c(2S) mass (M(\eta_c(2S))=3637.6\pm 2.9_\mathrm{stat}\pm 1.6_\mathrm{sys} MeV/c^2), width (\Gamma(\eta_c(2S))=16.9\pm 6.4_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.8_\mathrm{sys} MeV), and the product branching fraction (\BR(\psi(3686)\to \gamma\eta_c(2S))\times \BR(\eta_c(2S)\to K\bar K\pi) = (1.30\pm 0.20_\mathrm{stat}\pm 0.30_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-5}). Combining our result with a BaBar measurement of \BR(\eta_c(2S)\to K\bar K \pi), we find the branching fraction of the M1 transition to be \BR(\psi(3686)\to\gamma\eta_c(2S)) = (6.8\pm 1.1_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.5_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-4}.
