Quantum Hall States Stabilized in Semi-magnetic Bilayers of Topological Insulators

By breaking the time-reversal-symmetry in three-dimensional topological insulators with introduction of spontaneous magnetization or application of magnetic field, the surface states become gapped, leading to quantum anomalous Hall effect or quantum Hall effect, when the chemical potential locates inside the gap. Further breaking of inversion symmetry is possible by employing magnetic topological insulator heterostructures that host nondegenerate top and bottom surface states. Here, we demonstrate the tailored-material approach for the realization of robust quantum Hall states in the bilayer system, in which the cooperative or cancelling combination of the anomalous and ordinary Hall responses from the respective magnetic and non-magnetic layers is exemplified. The appearance of quantum Hall states at filling factor 0 and +1 can be understood by the relationship of energy band diagrams for the two independent surface states. The designable heterostructures of magnetic topological insulator may explore a new arena for intriguing topological transport and functionality.

Field-direction control of the type of charge carriers in nonsymmorphic IrO2

In the quest for switching of the charge carrier type in conductive materials, we focus on nonsymmorphic crystals, which are expected to have highly anisotropic folded Fermi surfaces due to the symmetry requirements. Following simple tight-binding model simulation, we prepare nonsymmorphic IrO2 single-crystalline films with various growth orientations by molecular beam epitaxy, and systematically quantify their Hall effect for the corresponding field directions. The results clearly demonstrate that the dominant carrier type can be intrinsically controlled by the magnetic field direction, as also evidenced by first-principles calculations revealing nontrivial momentum dependence of the group velocity and mass tensor on the folded Fermi surfaces and its anisotropic nature for the field direction.

Formation of In-plane Skyrmions in Epitaxial MnSi Thin Films as Revealed by Planar Hall Effect

We investigate skyrmion formation in both a single crystalline bulk and epitaxial thin films of MnSi by measurements of planar Hall effect. A prominent stepwise field profile of planar Hall effect is observed in the well-established skyrmion phase region in the bulk sample, which is assigned to anisotropic magnetoresistance effect with respect to the magnetic modulation direction. We also detect the characteristic planar Hall anomalies in the thin films under the in-plane magnetic field at low temperatures, which indicates the formation of skyrmion strings lying in the film plane. Uniaxial magnetic anisotropy plays an important role in stabilizing the in-plane skyrmions in the MnSi thin film.

Nonreciprocal spin wave propagation in chiral-lattice ferromagnets

Spin current, i.e. the flow of spin angular momentum or magnetic moment, has recently attracted much attention as the promising alternative for charge current with better energy efficiency. Genuine spin current is generally carried by the spin wave (propagating spin precession) in insulating ferromagnets, and should hold the chiral symmetry when it propagates along the spin direction. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that such a spin wave spin current (SWSC) shows nonreciprocal propagation characters in a chiral-lattice ferromagnet. This phenomenon originates from the interference of chirality between the SWSC and crystal-lattice, which is mediated by the relativistic spin-orbit interaction. The present finding enables the design of perfect spin current diode, and highlights the importance of the chiral aspect in SWSC.

Memory functions of magnetic skyrmions

Magnetic skyrmion, a swirling spin texture, in chiral magnets is characterized by (i) nano-scale size ($\sim$1nm -- 100nm), (ii) topological stability, and (iii) gyro-dynamics. These features are shown to be advantageous for (a) high-density data-storage, (b) nonvolatile memory, and (c) ultra-low current and energy cost manipulation, respectively. By the numerical simulations of Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, the elementary functions of skyrmions are demonstrated aiming at the design principles of skyrmionic memory devices.

Phase-change memory function of correlated electrons in organic conductors

Phase-change memory (PCM), a promising candidate for next-generation non-volatile memories, exploits quenched glassy and thermodynamically stable crystalline states as reversibly switchable state variables. We demonstrate PCM functions emerging from a charge-configuration degree of freedom in strongly correlated electron systems. Non-volatile reversible switching between a high-resistivity charge-crystalline (or charge-ordered) state and a low-resistivity quenched state, charge glass, is achieved experimentally via heat pulses supplied by optical or electrical means in organic conductors $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$$X$. Switching that is one order of magnitude faster is observed in another isostructural material that requires faster cooling to kinetically avoid charge crystallization, indicating that the material's critical cooling rate can be useful guidelines for pursuing a faster correlated-electron PCM function.

Discretized Topological Hall Effect Emerging from Skyrmions in Constricted Geometry

We investigate the skyrmion formation process in nano-structured FeGe Hall-bar devices by measurements of topological Hall effect, which extracts the winding number of a spin texture as an emergent magnetic field. Step-wise profiles of topological Hall resistivity are observed in the course of varying the applied magnetic field, which arise from instantaneous changes in the magnetic nano-structure such as creation, annihilation, and jittering motion of skyrmions. The discrete changes in topological Hall resistivity demonstrate the quantized nature of emergent magnetic flux inherent in each skyrmion, which had been indistinguishable in many-skyrmion systems on a macroscopic scale.

Polarization dependent Landau level crossing in a two-dimensional electron system in MgZnO/ZnO-heterostructure

We report electrical transport measurements in a tilted magnetic field on a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system confined at the MgZnO/ZnO heterointerface. The observation of multiple crossing events of spin-resolved Landau levels (LLs) enables the mapping of the sequence of electronic states. We further measure the renormalization of electron spin susceptibility at zero field and the susceptibility dependence on the electron spin polarization. The latter manifests the deviation from the Pauli spin susceptibility. As the result, the crossing of spin-resolved LLs shifts to smaller tilt angles and the first Landau level coincidence event is absent even when the magnetic field has only a perpendicular component to the 2DES plane.

Quantum Hall Effect on Top and Bottom Surface States of Topological Insulator (Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 Films

The three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) is a novel state of matter as characterized by two-dimensional (2D) metallic Dirac states on its surface. Bi-based chalcogenides such as Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, Sb2Te3 and their combined/mixed compounds like Bi2Se2Te and (Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 are typical members of 3D-TIs which have been intensively studied in forms of bulk single crystals and thin films to verify the topological nature of the surface states. Here, we report the realization of the Quantum Hall effect (QHE) on the surface Dirac states in (Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 films (x = 0.84 and 0.88). With electrostatic gate-tuning of the Fermi level in the bulk band gap under magnetic fields, the quantum Hall states with filling factor ν= \pm 1 are resolved with quantized Hall resistance of Ryx = h/e2 and zero longitudinal resistance, owing to chiral edge modes at top/bottom surface Dirac states. Furthermore, the appearance of a ν= 0 state (σxy = 0) reflects a pseudo-spin Hall insulator state when the Fermi level is tuned in between the energy levels of the non-degenerate top and bottom surface Dirac points. The observation of the QHE in 3D TI films may pave a way toward TI-based electronics.

Trajectory of Anomalous Hall Effect toward the Quantized State in a Ferromagnetic Topological Insulator

Topological insulators are bulk electronic insulators which possess symmetry protected gapless modes on their surfaces. Breaking the symmetries that underlie the gapless nature of the surface modes is predicted to give rise to exotic new states of matter. In particular, it has recently been predicted and shown that breaking of time reversal symmetry in the form of ferromagnetism can give rise to a gapped state characterized by a zero magnetic field quantized Hall response and dissipationless longitudinal transport known as the Quantum Anomalous Hall (QAH) state. A key question that has thus far remained experimentally unexplored is the relationship of this new type of quantum Hall state with the previously known orbitally driven quantum Hall states. Here, we show experimentally that a ferromagnetic topological insulator exhibiting the QAH state is well described by the global phase diagram of the quantum Hall effect. By mapping the behavior of the conductivity tensor in the parameter space of temperature, magnetic field, and chemical potential in the vicinity of the QAH phase, we find evidence for quantum criticality and delocalization behavior that can quantitatively be described by the renormalization group properties of the quantum Hall ground state. This result demonstrates that the QAH state observed in ferromagnetic topological insulators can be understood within the context of the law of corresponding states which governs the quantum Hall state. This suggests a roadmap for studying the QAH effect including transitions to possible adjacent topologically non-trivial states and a possible universality class for the QAH transition.

Electronic correlations and Hund's coupling effects in SrMoO$_3$ revealed by photoemission spectroscopy

We investigate the electronic structure of a perovskite-type Pauli paramagnet SrMoO3 (t2g2) thin film using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and compare the results to the realistic calculations that combine the density functional theory within the local-density approximation (LDA) with the dynamical-mean field theory (DMFT). Despite the clear signature of electron correlations in the electronic specific heat, the narrowing of the quasiparticle bands is not observed in the photoemission spectrum. This is explained in terms of the characteristic effect of Hund's rule coupling for partially-filled t2g bands, which induces strong quasiparticle renormalization already for values of Hubbard interaction which are smaller than the bandwidth. The interpretation is supported by additional model DMFT calculations including Hund's rule coupling, that show renormalization of low-energy quasiparticles without affecting the overall bandwidth. The photoemission spectra show additional spectral weight around -2 eV that is not present in the LDA+DMFT. We interpret this weight as a plasmon satellite, which is supported by measured Mo, Sr and Oxygen core-hole spectra that all show satellites at this energy.

Conceptual Design of the International Axion Observatory (IAXO)

The International Axion Observatory (IAXO) will be a forth generation axion helioscope. As its primary physics goal, IAXO will look for axions or axion-like particles (ALPs) originating in the Sun via the Primakoff conversion of the solar plasma photons. In terms of signal-to-noise ratio, IAXO will be about 4-5 orders of magnitude more sensitive than CAST, currently the most powerful axion helioscope, reaching sensitivity to axion-photon couplings down to a few $\times 10^{-12}$ GeV$^{-1}$ and thus probing a large fraction of the currently unexplored axion and ALP parameter space. IAXO will also be sensitive to solar axions produced by mechanisms mediated by the axion-electron coupling $g_{ae}$ with sensitivity $-$for the first time$-$ to values of $g_{ae}$ not previously excluded by astrophysics. With several other possible physics cases, IAXO has the potential to serve as a multi-purpose facility for generic axion and ALP research in the next decade. In this paper we present the conceptual design of IAXO, which follows the layout of an enhanced axion helioscope, based on a purpose-built 20m-long 8-coils toroidal superconducting magnet. All the eight 60cm-diameter magnet bores are equipped with focusing x-ray optics, able to focus the signal photons into $\sim 0.2$ cm$^2$ spots that are imaged by ultra-low-background Micromegas x-ray detectors. The magnet is built into a structure with elevation and azimuth drives that will allow for solar tracking for $\sim$12 h each day.

Challenges and opportunities of ZnO-related single crystalline heterostructures

Recent technological advancement in ZnO heterostructures has expanded the possibility of device functionalities to various kinds of applications. In order to extract novel device functionalities in the heterostructures, one needs to fabricate high quality films and interfaces with minimal impurities, defects, and disorder. With employing molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) and single crystal ZnO substrates, the density of residual impurities and defects can be drastically reduced and the optical and electrical properties have been dramatically improved for the ZnO films and heterostructures with MgxZn1-xO. Here, we overview such recent technological advancement from various aspects of application. Towards optoelectronic devices such as a light emitter and a photodetector in an ultraviolet region, the development of p-type ZnO and the fabrication of excellent Schottky contact, respectively, have been subjected to intensive studies for years. For the former, the fine tuning of the growth conditions to make MgxZn1-xO as intrinsic as possible has opened the possibilities of making p-type MgxZn1-xO through NH3 doping method. For the latter, conducting and transparent polymer films spin-coated on MgxZn1-xO was shown to give almost ideal Schottky junctions. The wavelength-selective detection can be realized with varying the Mg content. From the viewpoint of electronic devices, two-dimensional electrons confined at the MgxZn1-xO/ZnO interfaces are promising candidate for quantum devices because of high electron mobility and strong electron-electron correlation effect. These wonderful features and tremendous opportunities in ZnO-based heterostructures make this system unique and promising in oxide electronics and will lead to new quantum functionalities in optoelectronic devices and electronic applications with lower energy consumption and high performance.

Role of doped Ru in coercivity-enhanced La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}MnO$_3$ thin film studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

The coercivity of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ thin films can be enhanced by Ru substitution for Mn. In order to elucidate its mechanism, we performed soft x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism measurements at the Ru M$_{2,3}$ and Mn L$_{2,3}$ edges. We found that the spin direction of Ru and Mn are opposite and that Ru has a finite orbital magnetic moment. Cluster-model analysis indicated that the finite orbital magnetic moment as well as the reduced spin moment of Ru result from local lattice distortion caused by epitaxial strain from the SrTiO$_3$ substrate in the presence of spin-orbit interaction.

Enhanced quantum oscillatory magnetization and non-equilibrium currents in an interacting two-dimensional electron system in MgZnO/ZnO with repulsive scatterers

Torque magnetometry at low temperature and in high magnetic fields B is performed on a MgZnO/ZnO heterostructure incorporating a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system. We find a sawtooth-like quantum oscillatory magnetization M(B), i.e., the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect. At the same time, unexpected spike-like overshoots in M and non-equilibrium currents are observed which allow us to identify the microscopic nature and density of the residual disorder. The acceptor-like scatterers give rise to a magnetic thaw down effect which enhances the dHvA amplitude beyond the electron-electron interaction effects being present in the MgZnO/ZnO heterostructure

Phase competitions in epitaxial Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$/La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ superlattices

We studied the charge-orbital ordering in the superlattice of charge-ordered insulating Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ and ferromagnetic metallic La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ by resonant soft x-ray diffraction. A temperature-dependent incommensurability is found in the orbital order. In addition, a large hysteresis is observed that is caused by phase competition between insulating charge ordered and metallic ferromagnetic states. No magnetic phase transitions are observed in contrast to bulk, confirming the unique character of the superlattice. The deviation from the commensurate orbital order can be directly related to the decrease of ordered-layer thickness that leads to a decoupling of the orbital-ordered planes along the c axis.

IAXO - The International Axion Observatory

The International Axion Observatory (IAXO) is a next generation axion helioscope aiming at a sensitivity to the axion-photon coupling of a few 10^{-12} GeV^{-1}, i.e. 1-1.5 orders of magnitude beyond sensitivities achieved by the currently most sensitive axion helioscope, the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST). Crucial factors in improving the sensitivity for IAXO are the increase of the magnetic field volume together with the extensive use of x-ray focusing optics and low background detectors, innovations already successfully tested at CAST. Electron-coupled axions invoked to explain the white dwarf cooling, relic axions, and a large variety of more generic axion-like particles (ALPs) along with other novel excitations at the low-energy frontier of elementary particle physics could provide additional physics motivation for IAXO.

Magneto-photoluminescence of charged excitons from MgZnO/ZnO heterojunctions

We report on the photoluminescence (PL) properties of MgZnO/ZnO heterojunctions grown by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy. Influence of the applied magnetic field (B) on the radiative recombination of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is investigated up to 54 T. An increase in magnetic field in the range of B <= 20 T results in a redshift in the PL. Abrupt lineshape changes in the PL spectra are observed at higher magnetic fields, in correlation with the integer quantum Hall states. We attempt to interpret these features using the conventional model for the 2DEG-related PL based on the transition between the 2DEG and a hole as well as a model taking a bound state effect into account, i.e., a charged exciton. The comparison about the adequateness of these models was made, being in favor of the charged exciton model.
