Robust formation of skyrmions and topological Hall effect in epitaxial thin films of MnSi

Magneto-transport properties have been investigated for epitaxial thin films of B20-type MnSi grown on Si(111) substrates. Both Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and topological Hall effect (THE) clearly point to the robust formation of skyrmions over a wide temperature-magnetic field region. New features distinct from those of bulk MnSi are observed for epitaxial MnSi films: a shorter (nearly half) period of the spin helix and skyrmions, and an opposite sign of THE. These observations suggest versatile features of skyrmion-induced THE beyond the current understanding.

Precise calibration of Mg concentration in MgxZn1-xO thin films grown on ZnO substrates

The growth techniques for MgxZn1-xO thin films have advanced at a rapid pace in recent years, enabling the application of this material to a wide range of optical and electrical applications. In designing structures and optimizing device performances, it is crucial that the Mg content of the alloy be controllable and precisely determined. In this study, we have established laboratory-based methods to determine the Mg content of MgxZn1-xO thin films grown on ZnO substrates, ranging from the solubility limit of x ~ 0.4 to the dilute limit of x < 0.01. For the absolute determination of Mg content, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy is used for the high Mg region above x = 0.14, while secondary ion mass spectroscopy is employed to quantify low Mg content. As a lab-based method to determine the Mg content, c-axis length is measured by X-ray diffraction and is well associated with Mg content. The interpolation enables the determination of Mg content to x = 0.023, where the peak from the ZnO substrate overlaps the MgxZn1-xO peak in standard laboratory equipment, and thus quantitative determination. At dilute Mg contents below x = 0.023, the localized exciton peak energy of the MgxZn1-xO films as measured by photoluminescence is found to show a linear Mg content dependence, which is well resolved from the free exciton peak of ZnO substrate down to x = 0.0043. Our results demonstrate that X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence in combination are appropriate methods to determine Mg content in a wide Mg range from x = 0.004 to 0.40 in a laboratory environment.

Ultrafast optical control of magnetization in EuO thin films

All-optical pump-probe detection of magnetization precession has been performed for ferromagnetic EuO thin films at 10 K. We demonstrate that the circularly-polarized light can be used to control the magnetization precession on an ultrafast time scale. This takes place within the 100 fs duration of a single laser pulse, through combined contribution from two nonthermal photomagnetic effects, i.e., enhancement of the magnetization and an inverse Faraday effect. From the magnetic field dependences of the frequency and the Gilbert damping parameter, the intrinsic Gilbert damping coefficient is evaluated to be α \approx 3\times10^-3.

Ultrafast Time-Resolved Faraday Rotation in EuO Thin Films

We have investigated the ultrafast spin dynamics in EuO thin films by time-resolved Faraday rotation spectroscopy. The photoinduced magnetization is found to be increased in a transient manner, accompanied with subsequent demagnetization. The dynamical magnetization enhancement showed a maximum slightly below the Curie temperature with prolonged tails toward both lower and higher temperatures and dominates the demagnetization counterpart at 55 K. The magnetization enhancement component decays in ~1 ns. The realization of the transient collective ordering is attributable to the enhancement of the f-d exchange interaction.

Ferromagnetism of cobalt-doped anatase TiO$_2$ studied by bulk- and surface-sensitive soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

We have studied magnetism in anatase Ti$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O$_{2-δ}$ ({\it x} = 0.05) thin films with various electron carrier densities, by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Co $L_{2,3}$ absorption edges. For electrically conducting samples, the magnetic moment estimated by XMCD was $<$ 0.3 $μ_B$/Co using the surface-sensitive total electron yield (TEY) mode, while it was 0.3-2.4 $μ_B$/Co using the bulk-sensitive total fluorescence yield (TFY) mode. The latter value is in the same range as the saturation magnetization 0.6-2.1 $μ_B$/Co deduced by SQUID measurement. The magnetization and the XMCD intensity increased with carrier density, consistent with the carrier-induced origin of the ferromagnetism.

Imprinting magnetic information in manganites with X-rays

The effect of x-rays on an orbital and charge ordered epitaxial film of a Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ is presented. As the film is exposed to x-rays, the antiferromagnetic response increases and concomitantly the conductivity of the film improve. These results are discussed in terms of a persistent x-ray induced doping, leading to a modification of the magnetic structure. This effect allows writing electronic and magnetic domains in the film and represents a novel way of manipulating magnetism.

Disorder promotes ferromagnetism: Rounding of the quantum phase transition in Sr_{1-x}Ca_xRuO_3

The subtle interplay of randomness and quantum fluctuations at low temperatures gives rise to a plethora of unconventional phenomena in systems ranging from quantum magnets and correlated electron materials to ultracold atomic gases. Particularly strong disorder effects have been predicted to occur at zero-temperature quantum phase transitions. Here, we demonstrate that the composition-driven ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic quantum phase transition in Sr1-xCaxRuO3 is completely destroyed by the disorder introduced via the different ionic radii of the randomly distributed Sr and Ca ions. Using a magneto-optical technique, we map the magnetic phase diagram in the composition-temperature space. We find that the ferromagnetic phase is significantly extended by the disorder and develops a pronounced tail over a broad range of the composition x. These findings are explained by a microscopic model of smeared quantum phase transitions in itinerant magnets. Moreover, our theoretical study implies that correlated disorder is even more powerful in promoting ferromagnetism than random disorder.

Electronic phase transitions in Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ epitaxial thin films revealed by resonant soft x-ray scattering

We report the study of magnetic and orbital order in Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ epitaxial thin films grown on (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$-(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_3$)$_{0.7}$ (LSAT) (011)$_c$. In a new experimental approach, the polarization and energy dependence of resonant soft x-ray scattering are used to reveal significant modifications of the magnetic order in the film as compared to the bulk, namely (i) a different magnetic ordering wave vector, (ii) a different magnetic easy axis and (iii) an additional magnetic reordering transition at low temperatures. These observations indicate a strong impact of the epitaxial strain on the spin order, which is mediated by the orbital degrees of freedom and which provides a promising route to tune the magnetic properties of manganite films. Our results further demonstrate that resonant soft x-ray scattering is a very suitable technique to study the magnetism in thin films, to which neutron scattering cannot easily be applied due to the small sample volume.

Origin of the large polarization in multiferroic YMnO$_3$ thin films revealed by soft and hard x-ray diffraction

We investigated the magnetic structure of an orthorhombic YMnO3 thin film by resonant soft x-ray and hard x-ray diffraction. We observed a temperature-dependent incommensurate magnetic reflection below 45 K and a commensurate lattice-distortion reflection below 35 K. These results demonstrate that the ground state is composed of coexisting E-type and cycloidal states. Their different ordering temperatures clarify the origin of the large polarization to be caused by the E-type antiferromagnetic states in the orthorhombic YMnO3 thin film.

Ferrimagnetism and spontaneous ordering of transition-metals in La2CrFeO6 double-perovskite films

We report on atomic ordering of B-site transition-metals and magnetic properties of epitaxial La2CrFeO6 double-perovskite films grown by pulsed-laser deposition under various conditions. The highest ordered sample exhibited a fraction of antisite-disorder of only 0.05 and a saturation magnetization of ~2μ_{B} per formula unit at 5 K. The result is consistent with the antiferromagnetic ordering of local spin moment (3d^{3}_{\downarrow}3d^{5}_{\uparrow}; S = -3/2+5/2 = 1). Therefore, the magnetic ground state of La2CrFeO6 double-perovskite that has been long debate is unambiguously revealed to be ferrimagnetic. Our results present a wide opportunity to explore novel magnetic properties of binary transition-metal perovskites upon epitaxial stabilization of the ordered phase.

Insulating phase of a two-dimensional electron gas in MgZnO/ZnO heterostructure below nu = 1/3

We report magnetotransport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas confined at MgZnO/ZnO heterointerface in a high magnetic field up to 26 T. High electron mobility and low charge carrier density enabled the observation of the fractional quantum Hall state nu = 1/3. For an even lower charge carrier density, we observe a transition from quantum Hall liquid to an insulator below the filling factor 1/3. Because of the large electron effective mass in ZnO, we suggest the MgZnO/ZnO heterostructure to be a prototype system for highly correlated quantum Hall physics.

Bulk and Surface Magnetization of Co atoms in Rutile Ti_[1-x]Co_xO_[2-delta] Thin Films Revealed by X-Ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism

We have studied magnetism in Ti_[1-x]Co_xO_[2-δ] thin films with various x and δby soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Co L_[2,3] absorption edges. The estimated ferromagnetic moment by XMCD was 0.15-0.24 μβ/Co in the surface, while in the bulk it was 0.82-2.25 μβ/Co, which is in the same range as the saturation magnetization of 1.0-1.5 μβ/Co. Theseresults suggest that the intrinsic origin of the erromagnetism. The smaller moment of Co atom at surface is an indication of a magnetically dead layer of a few nm thick at the surface of the thin films.

Epitaxial-strain effect on charge/orbital order in Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 films

Effect of growth orientation on charge- and orbital-ordering (CO-OO) phenomena has been studied for Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 epitaxial thin films fabricated on (LaAlO3)0.3-(SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3)0.7 (LSAT) substrates by means of resistivity, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and polarized optical microscopy measurements. CO-OO transition is observed around 220 K for a film grown on an LSAT (011) substrate ((011)-film), similarly to a bulk sample, while a film grown on a (001) plane of LSAT ((001)-film) shows much higher transition temperature around 300 K. The domain size of OO is approximately 3 times as large in the (011)-film as in the (001)-film. These results demonstrate that various properties of CO-OO phenomena can be controlled with the growth orientation via the epitaxial strain from the substrate.

Spin susceptibility and effective mass of two-dimensional electrons in MgxZn1-xO/ZnO heterostructures

We report measurements of the spin susceptibility and the electron effective mass for two-dimensional electrons confined at the interfaces of MgxZn1-xO/ZnO single heterostructures (x = 0.05, 0.08, and 0.11), grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on (0001) ZnO substrates. By tuning the built-in polarization through control of the barrier composition, the electron density was systematically varied in the range of 5.6 x 10^11 to 1.6 x 10^12 cm^-2, corresponding to a range of 3.1 < rs < 5.2, where rs is the average electron spacing measured in units of the effective Bohr radius. We used the coincidence technique, where crossings of the spin-split Landau levels occur at critical tilt angles of magnetic field, to evaluate the spin susceptibility. In addition, we determined the effective mass from the temperature dependence of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations measured at the coincidence conditions. The susceptibility and the effective mass both gradually increase with decreasing electron density, reflecting the role of electron-electron interaction.

Complex extension of potentials and trajectories of poles of the S-matrix element in the complex momentum plane

Searching for infrastructure of the quantum mechanical system, we study trajectories of the s-wave poles of the S-matrix element with respect to a real phase $α$ in the complex momentum plane for a complex extension of real potentials by a phase factor $e^{iα}$. This complex extension relates the pole spectrum of the physical system with a potential to the spectrum of another system with the potential of the same shape but of opposite sign. There appear trajectories with the periodicity of $2π$, $4π$, and $\infty$. The appearance of non-recurrent behavior of the trajectory for the change of phase $Δα=2π$ is clearly related with the existence of resonance poles for real repulsive potentials. Dynamical changes of trajectory structure are examined.

Mutual transformation among bound, virtual and resonance states in one-dimensional rectangular potentials

A detailed analysis has been made by R.Zavin and N.Moiseyev(2004 J. Phys. A: Math, Gen, \textbf{37} 4619) for the change of bound states into resonance states via coalescence of virtual states in a one-dimensional symmetric rectangular attractive potential as it becomes shallow, with convergent wave functions of virtual and resonance states by the complex scaling method. As a complement to such an analysis, we discuss some global features of the pole spectrum of the S-matrix by using a complex extension of the real potential $V^{(\mathrm{real})}$ to $e^{iα}V^{(\mathrm{real})}$ with a real phase $α$. We show the structures of trajectories of poles developed for the change of $α$ in the complex momentum plane, which is useful to understand the mutual transformation among the bound, virtual and resonance states.

Inhomogeneous baryogenesis, cosmic antimatter, and dark matter

A model of inhomogeneous baryogenesis based on the Affleck and Dine mechanism is described. A simple coupling of the scalar baryon field to the inflaton allows for formation of astronomically significant bubbles with a large baryon (or antibaryon) asymmetry. During the farther evolution these domains form compact stellar-like objects, or lower density clouds, or primordial black holes of different size. According to the scenario, such high baryonic number objects occupy relatively small fraction of space but despite that they may significantly contribute to the cosmological mass density. For some values of parameters the model allows the possibility the whole dark matter in the universe to be baryonic. Furthermore, the model allows the existence of the antibaryonic B-bubbles, i.e. a significant fraction of the mass density in the universe can be in the form of the compact antimatter objects (e.g. anti-stars).

Bulk-like d band of SrVO3 under a self-protective cap layer

We have performed a detailed angel-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of in-situ prepared SrVO3 thin films. Naturally capped by a ``transparent'' protective layer, contributions from surface states centered at ~ -1.5 eV are dramatically reduced, enabling us to study the bulk V 3d states. We have observed a clear band dispersion not only in the coherent quasiparticle part but also in the incoherent part, which are reproduced by dynamical mean-field theory calculations and the spectral weight of the incoherent part is stronger within the Fermi surface.
