Tunable nonlinear spectra of anti-directional couplers

We produce transmission and reflection spectra of the anti-directional coupler (ADC) composed of linearly-coupled positive- and negative-refractive-index arms, with intrinsic Kerr nonlinearity. Both reflection and transmission feature two highly amplified peaks at two distinct wavelengths in a certain range of values of the gain, making it possible to design a wavelength-selective mode-amplification system. We also predict that a blend of gain and loss in suitable proportions can robustly enhance reflection spectra which are detrimentally affected by the attenuation, in addition to causing red and blue shifts owing to the Kerr effect. In particular, ADC with equal gain and loss coefficients, is considered in necessary detail.

Tailoring inhomogeneous $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric fiber Bragg grating spectra

The unique spectral behavior exhibited by a class of non-uniform Bragg periodic structures, namely chirped and apodized fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) influenced by parity and time reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, is presented. The interplay between the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and nonuniformities brings exceptional functionalities in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase such as wavelength selective amplification and single-mode lasing for a wide range of variations in gain-loss. We observe that the device is no more passive and it undergoes a series of transitions from asymmetric reflection to unidirectional invisibility and multi-mode amplification as a consequence of variation in the imaginary part of the strength of modulation in different apodization profiles, namely Gaussian and raised cosine, at the given value of chirping. The chirping affords bandwidth control as well as control over the magnitude of the reflected (transmitted) light. Likewise, apodization offers additional functionality in the form of suppression of uncontrolled lasing behavior in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime besides moderating the reflected signals outside the band edges of the spectra.

Dynamics of a non-autonomous system with age-structured growth and harvesting of prey and mutually interfering predator with reliance on alternative food

We perform a detailed analysis of the behaviour of a non-autonomous prey-predator model where age based growth with age discriminatory harvesting in prey and predator's reliance upon alternative food in the absence of that particular prey are considered. We begin by deriving certain sufficient conditions for permanence and positive invariance and then proceed to construct a Lyapunov function to derive some constraints for global attractivity. With the help of continuation theorem we arrive at the best fit criterion to prove the occurrence of a positive periodic solution. Moreover, using Arzela-Ascoli theorem we formulate a proof for a unique positive solution to be almost periodic and we carry out numerical simulation to verify the analytical findings. With the aid of graphs and tables we show the nature of the prey-predator system in response to the alternative food and delays.

Interplay between reproduction and age selective harvesting delays of a single population non-autonomous system

This paper is concerned with an analysis of the dynamics of a non-autonomous, single population age based growth model with harvesting formulation. First, we derive sufficient conditions for permanence and positive invariance. Then, by constructing a scalar function, namely the Lyapunov function, we arrive at a suitable criterion for global attractivity. With the help of Brouwer fixed point and continuation theorems, we obtain constraints for the existence of a positive periodic solution. Then we prove that there exists only one solution which is almost periodic in nature that is distinct from every other solution. Further, we carry out a numerical simulation to support the analytical findings.

Nondegenerate soliton solutions in certain coupled nonlinear Schrödinger systems

In this paper, we report a more general class of nondegenerate soliton solutions, associated with two distinct wave numbers in different modes, for a certain class of physically important integrable two component nonlinear Schrödinger type equations through bilinearization procedure. In particular, we consider coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CNLS) equations (both focusing as well as mixed type nonlinearities), coherently coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CCNLS) equations and long-wave-short-wave resonance interaction (LSRI) system. We point out that the obtained general form of soliton solutions exhibit novel profile structures than the previously known degenerate soliton solutions corresponding to identical wave numbers in both the modes. We show that such degenerate soliton solutions can be recovered from the newly derived nondegenerate soliton solutions as limiting cases.

Nonlinear nonuniform $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Bragg grating structures

We explore the consequences of incorporating parity and time reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetries on the dynamics of nonreciprocal light propagation exhibited by a class of nonuniform periodic structures known as chirped $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The interplay among various grating parameters such as chirping, detuning, nonlinearities, and gain/loss gives rise to unique bi- and multi-stable states in the unbroken as well as broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regimes. The role of chirping on the steering dynamics of the hysteresis curve is influenced by the type of nonlinearities and the nature of detuning parameter. Also, incident directions of the input light robustly impact the steering dynamics of bistable and multistable states both in the unbroken and broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regimes. When the light launching direction is reversed, critical stable states are found to occur at very low intensities which opens up a new avenue for an additional way of controlling light with light. We also analyze the phenomenon of unidirectional wave transport and the reflective bi- and multi-stable characteristics at the so-called $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking point.

Multifaceted dynamics and gap solitons in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric periodic structures

We report the role of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry in switching characteristics of a highly nonlinear fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with cubic-quintic-septic nonlinearities. We demonstrate that the device shows novel bi-(multi-) stable states in the broken regime as a direct consequence of the shift in the photonic band gap influenced by both $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and higher-order nonlinearities. We also numerically depict that such FBGs provide a productive test bed where the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime can be exploited to set up all-optical applications such as binary switches, multi-level signal processing and optical computing. Unlike optical bistability (OB) in the traditional and unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric FBG, it exhibits many peculiar features such as flat-top stable states and ramp like input-output characteristics before the onset of OB phenomenon in the broken regime. The gain/loss parameter plays a dual role in controlling the switching intensities between the stable states which is facilitated by reversing the direction of light incidence. We also find that the gain/loss parameter tailors the formation of gap solitons pertaining to transmission resonances which clearly indicates that it can be employed to set up optical storage devices. Moreover, the interplay between gain/loss and higher order nonlinearities brings notable changes in the nonlinear reflection spectra of the system under constant pump powers. The influence of each control parameters on the switching operation is also presented in a nutshell to validate that FBG offers more degrees of freedom in controlling light with light.

Nonlinear anti-directional couplers with gain and loss

Following the concept of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric couplers, we propose a linearly coupled system of nonlinear waveguides, made of positive- and negative-index materials, which carry, respectively, gain and loss. We report novel bi- and multi-stability states pertaining to transmitted and reflective intensities, which are controlled by the ratio of the gain and loss coefficients, and phase mismatch between the waveguides. These states offer transmission regimes with extremely low threshold intensities for transitions between coexisting states, and very large amplification ratio between the input and output intensities leading to an efficient way of controlling light with light.

Phase locking of spin transfer nano-oscillators using common microwave sources

In this paper, we study typical nonlinear phenomenon of phase-locking or synchronization in spin-torque nano oscillators (STNOs). To start with the oscillators are considered as uncoupled but interlinked through either a common microwave current or a microwave field. We identify the phase locking of an array of STNOs (first for two and then for 100 oscillators) by means of injection locking which represents locking the oscillations to a common alternating spin current or a common microwave magnetic field. We characterize the locking of STNOs through both first and second harmonic lockings in an array. We find that second harmonic lockings takes lesser value of microwave current and field when compared with the first harmonic lockings. Our results also show that oscillating microwave current can induce integer harmonic locking while microwave field can induce both integer and several fractional harmonic lockings. We also extend our analysis to study locking behavior of two STNOs by introducing time delay feedback and coupling through a current injection and bring out the associated locking characteristics. Finally, we have also analyzed the stability of synchronization of identical array of STNOs with current coupling by using master stability function formalism.

Long-range interaction induced collective dynamical behaviors

Long-range interacting systems are omnipresent in nature. We investigate here the collective dynamical behavior in a long-range interacting system consisting of coupled Stuart-Landau limit cycle oscillators. In particular, we analyze the impact of a repulsive coupling along with symmetry breaking coupling. We report that the addition of repulsive coupling of sufficient strength can induce a swing of the synchronized state which will start disappearing with an increasing disorder as a function of the repulsive coupling. We also deduce analytical stability conditions for the oscillatory states including synchronized state, solitary state, two-cluster state as well as oscillation death state. Finally, we have also analyzed the effect of power-law exponent on the observed dynamical states.

Frustration induced transient chaos, fractal and riddled basins in coupled limit cycle oscillators

This report unravels frustration as a source of transient chaotic dynamics even in a simple array of coupled limit cycle oscillators. The transient chaotic dynamics along with the multistable nature of frustrated systems facilitates the existence of complex basin structures such as fractal and riddled basins. In particular, we report the emergence of transient chaotic dynamics around the chaotic itinerancy region, where the basin of attraction near the chaotic region is riddled and it becomes fractal basin when we move away from this region. Normally the complex basin structures are observed only for oscillatory states but surprisingly it is also observed even for oscillation death states. Interestingly super persistent transient chaos is also shown to emerge in the coupled limit cycle oscillators, which manifests as stable chaos for larger networks.

Chimera patterns in three-dimensional locally coupled systems

The coexistence of coherent and incoherent domains, namely the appearance of chimera states, is being studied extensively in many contexts of science and technology since the past decade, though the previous studies are mostly built on the framework of one-dimensional and two-dimensional interaction topologies. Recently, the emergence of such fascinating phenomena has been studied in three-dimensional (3D) grid formation while considering only the nonlocal interaction. Here we study the emergence and existence of chimera patterns in a three dimensional network of coupled Stuart-Landau limit cycle oscillators and Hindmarsh-Rose neuronal oscillators with local (nearest neighbour) interaction topology. The emergence of different types of spatiotemporal chimera patterns is investigated by taking two distinct nonlinear interaction functions. We provide appropriate analytical explanations in the 3D grid of network formation and the corresponding numerical justifications are given. We extend our analysis on the basis of Ott-Antonsen reduction approach in the case of Stuart-Landau oscillators containing infinite number of oscillators. Particularly, in Hindmarsh-Rose neuronal network the existence of non-stationary chimera states are characterized by instantaneous strength of incoherence and instantaneous local order parameter. Besides, the condition for achieving exact neuronal synchrony is obtained analytically through a linear stability analysis. The different types of collective dynamics together with chimera states are mapped over a wide range of various parameter spaces.

Nondegenerate solitons in Manakov system

It is known that Manakov equation which describes wave propagation in two mode optical fibers, photorefractive materials, etc. can admit solitons which allow energy redistribution between the modes on collision that also leads to logical computing. In this paper, we point out that Manakov system can admit more general type of nondegenerate fundamental solitons corresponding to different wave numbers, which undergo collisions without any energy redistribution. The previously known class of solitons which allows energy redistribution among the modes turns out to be a special case corresponding to solitary waves with identical wave numbers in both the modes and travelling with the same velocity. We trace out the reason behind such a possibility and analyze the physical consequences.

Tailoring $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric soliton switch

We theoretically demonstrate soliton steering in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric coupled nonlinear dimers. We show that if the length of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system is set to $2π$ contrary to the conventional one which operates satisfactorily well only at the half-beat coupling length, the $\mathcal{PT}$ dimer remarkably yields an ideal soliton switch exhibiting almost 99.99% energy efficiency with an ultra-low critical power.

Conjugate coupling induced symmetry breaking and quenched oscillations

Spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) is essential and plays a vital role many natural phenomena, including the formation of Turing pattern in organisms and complex patterns in brain dynamics. In this work, we investigate whether a set of coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators can exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking when the oscillators are interacting through dissimilar variables or conjugate coupling. We find the emergence of SSB state with coexisting distinct dynamical states in the parametric space and show how the system transits from symmetry breaking state to out-of-phase synchronized (OPS) state while admitting multistabilities among the dynamical states. Further, we also investigate the effect of feedback factor on SSB as well as oscillation quenching states and we point out that the decreasing feedback factor completely suppresses SSB and oscillation death states. Interestingly, we also find the feedback factor completely diminishes only symmetry breaking oscillation and oscillation death (OD) states but it does not affect the nontrivial amplitude death (NAD) state. Finally, we have deduced the analytical stability conditions for in-phase and out-of-phase oscillations, as well as amplitude and oscillation death states.

On symmetry preserving and symmetry broken bright, dark and antidark soliton solutions of nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We construct symmetry preserving and symmetry broken N-bright, dark and antidark soliton solutions of a nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation. To obtain these solutions, we use appropriate eigenfunctions in Darboux transformation (DT) method. We present explicit one and two bright soliton solutions and show that they exhibit stable structures only when we combine the field and parity transformed complex conjugate field. Further, we derive two dark/antidark soliton solution with the help of DT method. Unlike the bright soliton case, dark/antidark soliton solution exhibits stable structure for the field and the parity transformed conjugate field separately. In the dark/antidark soliton solution case we observe a contrasting behaviour between the envelope of the field and parity transformed complex conjugate envelope of the field. For a particular parametric choice, we get dark (antidark) soliton for the field while the parity transformed complex conjugate field exhibits antidark (dark) soliton. Due to this surprising result, both the field and PT transformed complex conjugate field exhibit sixteen different combinations of collision scenario. We classify the parametric regions of dark and antidark solitons in both the field and parity transformed complex conjugate field by carrying out relevant asymptotic analysis. Further we present $2N$-dark/antidark soliton solution formula and demonstrate that this solution may have $2^{2N}\times 2^{2N}$ combinations of collisions.

A critique on the soliton solutions of $\cal{PT}$-invariant reverse space nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We point out certain basic misconceptions and incorrect statements given by Gürses and Pekcan in the recent paper {\bf J. Math. Phys. 59, 051501 (2018)}. We re-emphasize the soliton solution derived by us earlier in {\bf Phys. Lett. A. 381, 2380 (2017)} for the reverse space nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation is correct and more general and contains the solutions given by Gürses and Pekcan as special cases.

Degenerate soliton solutions and their dynamics in the nonlocal Manakov system: I Symmetry preserving and symmetry breaking solutions

In this paper, we construct degenerate soliton solutions (which preserve $\cal{PT}$-symmetry/break $\cal{PT}$-symmetry) to the nonlocal Manakov system through a nonstandard bilinear procedure. Here by degenerate we mean the solitons that are present in both the modes which propagate with same velocity. The degenerate nonlocal soliton solution is constructed after briefly indicating the form of nondegenerate one-soliton solution. To derive these soliton solutions, we simultaneously solve the nonlocal Manakov equation and a pair of coupled equations that arise from the zero curvature condition. The later consideration yields general soliton solution which agrees with the solutions that are already reported in the literature under certain specific parametric choice. We also discuss the salient features associated with the obtained degenerate soliton solutions.
