Degenerate soliton solutions and their dynamics in the nonlocal Manakov system: II Interactions between solitons

In this paper, by considering the degenerate two bright soliton solutions of the nonlocal Manakov system, we bring out three different types of energy sharing collisions for two different parametric conditions. Among the three, two of them are new which do not exist in the local Manakov equation. By performing an asymptotic analysis to the degenerate two-soliton solution, we explain the changes which occur in the quasi-intensity/quasi-power, phase shift and relative separation distance during the collision process. Remarkably, the intensity redistribution reveals that in the new types of shape changing collisions, the energy difference of soliton in the two modes is not preserved during collision. In contrast to this, in the other shape changing collision, the total energy of soliton in the two modes is conserved during collision. In addition to this, by tuning the imaginary parts of the wave numbers, we observe localized resonant patterns in both the scenarios. We also demonstrate the existence of bound states in the CNNLS equation during the collision process for certain parametric values.

Harnessing energy sharing collisions of Manakov solitons to implement universal NOR and OR logic gates

The energy sharing collision of bright optical solitons in the Manakov system, governing pulse propagation in high birefringent fiber, is employed theoretically to realize optical logic gates. Especially, for the first time, we successfully construct (theoretically) the universal NOR gate and the OR gate from the energy sharing collisions of just four bright solitons which can be well described by the exact bright four-soliton solution of the Manakov system. This construction procedure has the important merits like realizing the two input gates with a minimal number of soliton collisions and possibilities of multi-state logic. The recent experiments on Manakov solitons suggest the possibility of implementation of this theoretical construction of such gates and ultimately an all optical computer.

Strange nonchaotic attractors for computation

We investigate the response of quasiperiodically driven nonlinear systems exhibiting strange non- chaotic attractors (SNAs) to deterministic input signals. We show that if one uses two square waves in aperiodic manner as input to a quasiperiodically driven double-well Duffing oscillator system, the response of the system can produce logical output controlled by such a forcing. Changing the threshold or biasing of the system changes the output to another logic operation and memory latch. The interplay of nonlinearity and quasiperiodic forcing yields logic behaviour and the emergent out- come of such a system is a logic gate. It is further shown that the logical behaviours persist even for experimental noise floor. Thus the SNA turns out to be an efficient tool for computation.

Exact Intrinsic Localized Excitation of an Anisotropic Ferromagnetic Spin Chain in External Magnetic Field with Gilbert Damping, Spin Current and PT-Symmetry

We obtain the exact one-spin intrinsic localized excitation in an anisotropic Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin chain in a constant/variable external magnetic field with Gilbert damping included. We also point out how an appropriate magnitude spin current term in a spin transfer nano-oscillator (STNO) can stabilize the tendency towards damping. Further, we show how this excitation can be sustained in a recently suggested PT-symmetric magnetic nanostructure. We also briefly consider more general spin excitations.

Distinct collective states due to the trade-off between attractive and repulsive couplings

We investigate the effect of repulsive coupling together with an attractive coupling in a network of nonlocally coupled oscillators. To understand the complex interaction between these two couplings we introduce a control parameter in the repulsive coupling which plays a crucial role in inducing distinct complex collective patterns. In particular, we show the emergence of various cluster chimera death states through a dynamically distinct transition route, namely the oscillatory cluster state and coherent oscillation death state as a function of the repulsive coupling in the presence of the attractive coupling. In the oscillatory cluster state, the oscillators in the network are grouped into two distinct dynamical states of homogeneous and inhomogeneous oscillatory states. Further, the network of coupled oscillators follows the same transition route in the entire coupling range. Depending upon distinct coupling ranges the system displays a different number of clusters in the death state and oscillatory state. We also observe that the number of coherent domains in the oscillatory cluster state exponentially decreases with increase in coupling range and obeys a power law decay. Additionally, we show analytical stability for observed solitary state, synchronized state, and incoherent oscillation death state.

Lie symmetry analysis and group invariant solutions of the nonlinear Helmholtz equation

We consider the nonlinear Helmholtz (NLH) equation describing the beam propagation in a planar waveguide with Kerr-like nonlinearity under non-paraxial approximation. By applying the Lie symmetry analysis, we determine the Lie point symmetries and the corresponding symmetry reductions in the form of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with the help of the optimal systems of one-dimensional subalgebras. Our investigation reveals an important fact that in spite of the original NLH equation being non-integrable, its symmetry reductions are of Painlevé integrable. We study the resulting sets of nonlinear ODEs analytically either by constructing the integrals of motion using the modified Prelle-Singer method or by obtaining explicit travelling wave-like solutions including solitary and symbiotic solitary wave solutions. Also, we carry out a detailed numerical analysis of the reduced equations and obtain multi-peak nonlinear wave trains. As a special case of the NLH equation, we also make a comparison between the symmetries of the present NLH system and that of the standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation for which symmetries are long available in the literature.

Stable amplitude chimera states in a network of locally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators

We investigate the occurrence of collective dynamical states such as transient amplitude chimera, stable amplitude chimera and imperfect breathing chimera states in a \textit{locally coupled} network of Stuart-Landau oscillators. In an imperfect breathing chimera state, the synchronized group of oscillators exhibits oscillations with large amplitudes while the desynchronized group of oscillators oscillates with small amplitudes and this behavior of coexistence of synchronized and desynchronized oscillations fluctuates with time. Then we analyze the stability of the amplitude chimera states under various circumstances, including variations in system parameters and coupling strength, and perturbations in the initial states of the oscillators. For an increase in the value of the system parameter, namely the nonisochronicity parameter, the transient chimera state becomes a stable chimera state for a sufficiently large value of coupling strength. In addition, we also analyze the stability of these states by perturbing the initial states of the oscillators. We find that while a small perturbation allows one to perturb a large number of oscillators resulting in a stable amplitude chimera state, a large perturbation allows one to perturb a small number of oscillators to get a stable amplitude chimera state. We also find the stability of the transient and stable amplitude chimera states as well as traveling wave states for appropriate number of oscillators using Floquet theory. In addition, we also find the stability of the incoherent oscillation death states.

Chimera states in two-dimensional networks of locally coupled oscillators

Chimera state is defined as a mixed type of collective state in which synchronized and desynchronized subpopulations of a network of coupled oscillators coexist and the appearance of such anomalous behavior has strong connection to diverse neuronal developments. Most of the previous studies on chimera states are not extensively done in two-dimensional ensembles of coupled oscillators by taking neuronal systems with nonlinear coupling function into account while such ensembles of oscillators are more realistic from a neurobiological point of view. In this paper, we report the emergence and existence of chimera states by considering locally coupled two-dimensional networks of identical oscillators where each node is interacting through nonlinear coupling function. This is in contrast with the existence of chimera states in two-dimensional nonlocally coupled oscillators with rectangular kernel in the coupling function. We find that the presence of nonlinearity in the coupling function plays a key role to produce chimera states in two-dimensional locally coupled oscillators. We analytically verify explicitly in the case of a network of coupled Stuart - Landau oscillators in two dimensions that the obtained results using Ott-Antonsen approach and our analytical finding very well matches with the numerical results. Next, we consider another type of important nonlinear coupling function which exists in neuronal systems, namely chemical synaptic function, through which the nearest-neighbor (locally coupled) neurons interact with each other. In numerical simulations, we consider two paradigmatic neuronal oscillators, namely Hindmarsh-Rose neuron model and Rulkov map for each node which exhibit bursting dynamics. The existence of chimera states is confirmed by instantaneous angular frequency, order parameter and strength of incoherence.

Chimera at the phase-flip transition of an ensemble of identical nonlinear oscillators

A complex collective emerging behavior characterized by coexisting coherent and incoherent do- mains is termed as a chimera state. We bring out the existence of a new type of chimera in a nonlocally coupled ensemble of identical oscillators driven by a common dynamic environment. The latter facilitates the onset of phase-flip bifurcation/transitions among the coupled oscillators of the ensemble, while the nonlocal coupling induces a partial asynchronization among the out-of-phase synchronized oscillators at this onset. This leads to the manifestation of coexisting out-of-phase synchronized coherent domains interspersed by asynchronous incoherent domains elucidating the existence of a different type of chimera state. In addition to this, a rich variety of other collective behaviors such as clusters with phase-flip transition, conventional chimera, solitary state and com- plete synchronized state which have been reported using different coupling architectures are found to be induced by the employed couplings for appropriate coupling strengths. The robustness of the resulting dynamics is demonstrated in ensembles of two paradigmatic models, namely Rössler oscillators and Stuart-Landau oscillators.

Quantum solvability of a general ordered position dependent mass system: Mathews-Lakshmanan oscillator

In position dependent mass (PDM) problems, the quantum dynamics of the associated systems have been understood well in the literature for particular orderings. However, no efforts seem to have been made to solve such PDM problems for general orderings to obtain a global picture. In this connection, we here consider the general ordered quantum Hamiltonian of an interesting position dependent mass problem, namely the Mathews-Lakshmanan oscillator, and try to solve the quantum problem for all possible orderings including Hermitian and non-Hermitian ones. The other interesting point in our study is that for all possible orderings, although the Schrödinger equation of this Mathews-Lakshmanan oscillator is uniquely reduced to the associated Legendre differential equation, their eigenfunctions cannot be represented in terms of the associated Legendre polynomials with integral degree and order. Rather the eigenfunctions are represented in terms of associated Legendre polynomials with non-integral degree and order. We here explore such polynomials and represent the discrete and continuum states of the system. We also exploit the connection between associated Legendre polynomials with non-integral degree with other orthogonal polynomials such as Jacobi and Gegenbauer polynomials.

Nonstandard bilinearization of $\cal{PT}$-invariant nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation: Bright soliton solutions

In this paper, we succeed to bilinearize the $\cal{PT}$-invariant nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NNLS) equation through a nonstandard procedure and present more general bright soliton solutions. We achieve this by bilinearizing both the NNLS equation and its associated parity transformed complex conjugate equation in a novel way. The obtained one and two soliton solutions are invariant under combined space and time reversal transformations and are more general than the known ones. Further, by considering the two-soliton solution we bring out certain novel interaction properties of the $\cal{PT}$-invariant multi-soliton solutions.

Design and implementation of dynamic logic gates and R-S flip-flop using quasiperiodically driven Murali-Lakshmanan-Chua circuit

We report the propagation of a square wave signal in a quasi-periodically driven Murali-Lakshmanan-Chua (QPDMLC) circuit system. It is observed that signal propagation is possible only above a certain threshold strength of the square wave or digital signal and all the values above the threshold amplitude are termed as 'region of signal propagation'. Then, we extend this region of signal propagation to perform various logical operations like AND/NAND/OR/NOR and hence it is also designated as the 'region of logical operation'. Based on this region, we propose implementing the dynamic logic gates, namely AND/NAND/OR/NOR, which can be decided by the asymmetrical input square waves without altering the system parameters. Further, we show that a single QPDMLC system will produce simultaneously two outputs which are complementary to each other. As a result, a single QPDMLC system yields either AND as well as NAND or OR as well as NOR gates simultaneously. Then we combine the corresponding two QPDMLC systems in a cross-coupled way and report that its dynamics mimics that of fundamental R-S flip-flop circuit. All these phenomena have been explained with analytical solutions of the circuit equations characterizing the system and finally the results are compared with the corresponding numerical and experimental analysis.

Discontinuity Induced Hopf and Neimark-Sacker Bifurcations in a Memristive Murali-Lakshmanan-Chua Circuit

We report using Clarke's concept of generalised differential and a modification of Floquet theory to non-smooth oscillations, the occurrence of discontinuity induced Hopf bifurcations and Neimark-Sacker bifurcations leading to quasiperiodic attractors in a memristive Murali-Lakshmanan-Chua (memristive MLC) circuit. The above bifurcations arise because of the fact that a memristive MLC circuit is basically a nonsmooth system by virtue of having a memristive element as its nonlinearity. The switching and modulating properties of the memristor which we have considered endow the circuit with two discontinuity boundaries and multiple equilibrium points as well. As the Jacobian matrices about these equilibrium points are non-invertible, they are non-hyperbolic, some of these admit local bifurcations as well. Consequently when these equilibrium points are perturbed, they lose their stability giving rise to quasiperiodic orbits. The numerical simulations carried out by incorporating proper discontinuity mappings (DMs), such as the Poincaré discontinuity map (PDM) and zero time discontinuity map (ZDM), are found to agree well with experimental observations.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking due to the trade-off between attractive and repulsive couplings

Spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) is an important phenomenon observed in various fields including physics and biology. In this connection, we here show that the trade-off between attractive and repulsive couplings can induce spontaneous symmetry breaking in a homogeneous system of coupled oscillators. With a simple model of a system of two coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators, we demonstrate how the tendency of attractive coupling in inducing in-phase synchronized (IPS) oscillations and the tendency of repulsive coupling in inducing out-of-phase synchronized (OPS) oscillations compete with each other and give rise to symmetry breaking oscillatory (SBO) states and interesting multistabilities. Further, we provide explicit expressions for synchronized and anti-synchronized oscillatory states as well as the so called oscillation death (OD) state and study their stability. If the Hopf bifurcation parameter ($λ$) is greater than the natural frequency ($ω$) of the system, the attractive coupling favours the emergence of an anti-symmetric OD state via a Hopf bifurcation whereas the repulsive coupling favours the emergence of a similar state through a saddle-node bifurcation. We show that an increase in the repulsive coupling not only destabilizes the IPS state but also facilitates the re-entrance of the IPS state.

Controlling of blow-up responses by a nonlinear $\cal{PT}$ symmetric coupling

We investigate the dynamics of a coupled waveguide system with competing linear and nonlinear loss-gain profiles which can facilitate power saturation. We show the usefulness of the model in achieving unidirectional beam propagation. In this regard, the considered type of coupled waveguide system has two drawbacks, (i) difficulty in achieving perfect isolation of light in a waveguide and (ii) existence of blow-up type behavior for certain input power situations. We here show a nonlinear $\cal{PT}$ symmetric coupling that helps to overcome these two drawbacks. Such a nonlinear coupling has close connection with the phenomenon of stimulated Raman scattering. In particular, we have elucidated the role of this nonlinear coupling using an integrable $\cal{PT}$ symmetric situation. In particular, using the integrals of motion, we have reduced this coupled waveguide problem to the problem of dynamics of a particle in a potential. With the latter picture, we have clearly illustrated the role of the considered nonlinear coupling. The above $\cal{PT}$ symmetric case corresponds to a limiting form of a general equation describing the phenomenon of stimulated Raman scattering. We also point out the ability to transport light unidirectionally even in this general case.

Chimera-like states in two distinct groups of identical populations of coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators

We show the existence of chimera-like states in two distinct groups of identical populations of globally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators. The existence of chimera-like states occurs only for a small range of frequency difference between the two populations and these states disappear for an increase of mismatch between the frequencies. Here the chimera-like states are characterized by the synchronized oscillations in one population and desynchronized oscillations in another population. We also find that such states observed in two distinct groups of identical populations of nonlocally coupled oscillators are different from the above case in which coexisting domains of synchronized and desynchronized oscillations are observed in one population and the second population exhibits synchronized oscillations for spatially prepared initial conditions. Perturbation from such spatially prepared initial condition leads to the existence of imperfectly synchronized states. An imperfectly synchronized state represents the existence of solitary oscillators which escape from the synchronized group in population-I and synchronized oscillations in population-II. Also the existence of chimera state is independent of the increase of frequency mismatch between the populations. We also find the coexistence of different dynamical states with respect to different initial conditions which causes multistability in the globally coupled system. In the case of nonlocal coupling, the system does not show multistability except in the cluster state region.

Emergence of a common generalized synchronization manifold in network motifs of structurally different time-delay systems

We point out the existence of a transition from partial to global generalized synchronization (GS) in symmetrically coupled structurally different time-delay systems of different orders using the auxiliary system approach and the mutual false nearest neighbor method. The present authors have recently reported that there exists a common GS manifold even in an ensemble of structurally nonidentical scalar time-delay systems with different fractal dimensions and shown that GS occurs simultaneously with phase synchronization (PS). In this paper we confirm that the above result is not confined just to scalar one-dimensional time-delay systems alone but there exists a similar type of transition even in the case of time-delay systems with different orders. We calculate the maximal transverse Lyapunov exponent to evaluate the asymptotic stability of the complete synchronization manifold of each of the main and the corresponding auxiliary systems, which in turn ensures the stability of the GS manifold between the main systems. Further we estimate the correlation coefficient and the correlation of probability of recurrence to establish the relation between GS and PS. We also calculate the mutual false nearest neighbor parameter which doubly confirms the occurrence of the global GS manifold.

Two-dimensional isochronous nonstandard Hamiltonian systems

We identify a generic class of two dimensional nonstandard Hamiltonian systems which exhibit isochronous behaviour. This class of systems belongs to the two dimensional mixed Liénard- type equations and is obtained by generalizing the scalar modified Emden equation (MEE) to two dimensions. We show that the generalized class of equations admits a Hamiltonian description and exhibits periodic and quasi-periodic oscillations for suitable choice of parameters and also $\emph PT$ symmetric property.
