The changing optical and X-ray emission of the dormant $\gamma$ Cas star HD 45314

$\gamma$ Cas stars are Oe/Be stars that exhibit bright and hard X-ray emission. HD45314 belonged to this category, but lost its $\gamma$ Cas characteristics as its circumstellar disc started to fade away. The star was monitored in optical spectroscopy, optical photometry, and X-ray spectroscopy to follow its variability on timescales of hours to years. Time series of magnitudes, colours, line equivalent widths and violet over red peak intensity ratios were analysed with Fourier methods to uncover possible periodicities. For five years, HD45314 exhibited oscillations of its magnitude and line strengths on a timescale of 230 d. It then declined towards a nearly disc-free stage and is now slowly rebuilding its disc. During these phases, the violet over red peak intensity ratio exhibited a modulation on a timescale of about 1190 d. Over the whole campaign, prominent short-term photometric variations, notably at a frequency of 3.369 d$^{-1}$, were probably due to $\beta$ Cep-type pulsations. The amplitude of these pulsations was stronger during phases of overall brightness changes. In parallel, the X-ray spectrum switched to a low state at the onset of the oscillation phase and has remained in this low state since then. Some residual hard emission is nonetheless observed. HD45314's long-term optical variations bear resemblance with the predictions of smooth particle hydrodynamics calculations, although a close look does reveal some inconsistencies. Unlike some other $\gamma$ Cas stars, where the X-ray emission remained nearly constant despite major changes of the circumstellar disc, HD45314's X-ray properties changed dramatically as the disc begun to dissipate. These differences might arise from a wider orbital separation between the Oe star and its putative white dwarf companion or from the ablation of the disc by the radiation field of the Oe star.

Evidence of orbital mixing upon ionization via Cooper minimum photoelectron dynamics in epichlorohydrin. Experiment and Theory

A peculiar electron correlation effect, leading to orbital rotation upon ionization, theoretically predicted long ago, was never experimentally characterized. The effect is expected to appear prominently in the photoionization of chiral molecules, due to the lack of symmetry constraints to wave-functions mixing. This is observed to have a profound effect on the photoelectron dynamics, as here demonstrated by investigating \b{eta} asymmetry parameters and partial cross-section observables in the Cl 3p Cooper minimum region of epichlorohydrin, a chiral prototype system. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with tunable synchrotron radiation allowed measuring Cooper minimum $\beta$ oscillations, which were observed for solely two valence photoionization channels. The nature and number of channels exhibiting such dynamical behavior, along with the extent of the observed oscillation amplitudes, could not be accounted for by predictions based on Hartree-Fock (HF) and Density Functional Theory (DFT). These features could only be explained by incorporating correlation effects, which mix single-hole configurations of identical symmetry, in the characterization of the four lowest-lying molecular cation states, via equation-of-motion coupled cluster singles and doubles Dyson orbitals.

Observations of UX Ori in deep minima with the Nordic Optical Telescope. I. Analysis of spectral lines

UX Orionis stars are the most active young stars; they undergo sporadic fadings of 2 - 4 magnitudes in the V-band, due to variable circumstellar extinction caused by a nearly edge-on star-disc system. The long-lasting monitoring of a number of stars of this type with the Nordic Optical Telescope from 2019 to 2024 has given a rich collection of material of high-resolution (R ~ 25000) spectra obtained during different brightness states of the stars. In this paper, we present the results of observations for UX Ori itself. Until now only one spectrum of high resolution had been obtained for this star during brightness minimum, making it difficult to do a comprehensive analysis. Our aim is to analyse how different spectral lines change during such irregular fading events, when the star is going in and out of eclipses, obscured by dust along the line of sight. For this purpose we provide a comparative analysis of the profiles and equivalent widths of the spectral lines belonging to the different atoms and ions. In addition we compare the results for UX Ori with those made for another target in our sample: RR Tau. Common features of variability are revealed: 1) a strengthening of the H-alpha line relatively to the continuum during eclipses; 2) the appearance of additional emission on the frequencies of photospheric lines (e.g. Fe II, Ca II, Si II). The different behaviour of the spectral lines during fading found for UX Ori and RR Tau may be caused by two effects: a different contribution of the scattered light to the stellar flux during eclipses or a less intense disc wind of UX Ori.

Time-dependent condensate formation in ultracold atoms with energy-dependent transport coefficients

Time-dependent Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) formation in ultracold atoms is investigated in a nonlinear diffusion model. For constant transport coefficients, the model has been solved analytically. Here, we extend it to include energy-dependent transport coeffcients and numerically solve the nonlinear equation. Our results are compared with the earlier analytical model for constant transport coeffcients, and with recent deep-quench data for K-39 at various scattering lengths. Some non-physical predictions from the constant-coefficient model are resolved using energy-dependent drift and diffusion.

Modelling UX Ori Star Eclipses based on Spectral Observations with the Nordic Optical Telescope. I. RR Tau

Based on observations obtained with the Nordic Optical Telescope we investigate the spectral variability of the Herbig Ae star RR Tau. This star belongs to the UX Ori family, characterized by very deep fadings caused by the screening of the star with opaque fragments (clouds) of the protoplanetary discs. At the moments of such minima one observes strong spectral variability due to the fact that the dust cloud occults, for an observer, not only the star but also a part of the region where the emission spectrum originates. We calculated a series of obscuration models to interpret the observed variability of the H-alpha line parameters. We consider two main obscuration scenarios: (1) the dust screen rises vertically above the circumstellar disc, and (2) the screen intersects the line-of-sight moving azimuthally with the disc. In both cases the model of the emission region consists of a compact magnetosphere and a magneto-centrifugal disc wind. Comparison with observations shows that the first scenario explains well the variability of the radiation flux, the equivalent width, as well as the asymmetry of the H-alpha line during eclipses, while the second scenario explains them only partly. This permits us to suggest that in the case of RR Tau, the main causes of the eclipses are either a structured disc wind, or the charged dust lifted along the field lines of the poloidal component of the magnetic field of the circumstellar disc.

Ion Coulomb Crystals in Storage Rings for Quantum Information Science

Quantum information science is a growing field that promises to take computing into a new age of higher performance and larger scale computing as well as being capable of solving problems classical computers are incapable of solving. The outstanding issue in practical quantum computing today is scaling up the system while maintaining interconnectivity of the qubits and low error rates in qubit operations to be able to implement error correction and fault-tolerant operations. Trapped ion qubits offer long coherence times that allow error correction. However, error correction algorithms require large numbers of qubits to work properly. We can potentially create many thousands (or more) of qubits with long coherence states in a storage ring. For example, a circular radio-frequency quadrupole, which acts as a large circular ion trap and could enable larger scale quantum computing. Such a Storage Ring Quantum Computer (SRQC) would be a scalable and fault tolerant quantum information system, composed of qubits with very long coherence lifetimes. With computing demands potentially outpacing the supply of high-performance systems, quantum computing could bring innovation and scientific advances to particle physics and other DOE supported programs. Increased support of R$\&$D in large scale ion trap quantum computers would allow the timely exploration of this exciting new scalable quantum computer. The R$\&$D program could start immediately at existing facilities and would include the design and construction of a prototype SRQC. We invite feedback from and collaboration with the particle physics and quantum information science communities.

First storage of ion beams in the Double Electrostatic Ion-Ring Experiment - DESIREE

We report on the first storage of ion beams in the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment; DESIREE, at Stockholm University. We have produced beams of atomic carbon anions and small carbon anion molecules (C$_n^-$, $n=1,2,3,4$) in a sputter ion source. The ion beams were accelerated to 10 keV kinetic energy and stored in an electrostatic ion storage ring enclosed in a vacuum chamber at 13 K. For 10 keV C$_2^-$ molecular anions we measure the residual-gas limited beam storage lifetime to be 448 s $\pm$ 18 s with two independent detector systems. Using the measured storage lifetimes we estimate that the residual gas pressure is in the 10$^{-14}$ mbar range. When high current ion beams are injected, the number of stored particles does not follow a single exponential decay law as would be expected for stored particles lost solely due to electron detachment in collision with the residual-gas. Instead, we observe a faster initial decay rate, which we ascribe to the effect of the space charge of the ion beam on the storage capacity. %The latter effect becomes insignificant after longer storage times of typically 100-150 seconds and we then observe a constant decay rate due to residual-gas collisions.

Footprints of hyperfine, spin-orbit, and decoherence effects in Pauli spin blockade

We detect in real time inter-dot tunneling events in a weakly coupled two electron double quantum dot in GaAs. At finite magnetic fields, we observe two characteristic tunneling times, T_d and T_b, belonging to, respectively, a direct and a blocked (spin-flip-assisted) tunneling. The latter corresponds to lifting of a Pauli spin blockade and the tunneling times ratio eta=T_b/T_d characterizes the blockade efficiency. We find pronounced changes in the behavior of eta upon increasing the magnetic field, with eta increasing, saturating and increasing again. We explain this behavior as due to the crossover of the dominant blockade lifting mechanism from the hyperfine to spin-orbit interactions and due to a change in the contribution of the charge decoherence.

Approximating functions on stratified sets

We investigate smooth approximations of functions, with prescribed gradient behavior on a distinguished stratified subset of the domain. As an application, we outline how our results yield important consequences for a recently introduced class of stochastic processes, called the matrix-valued Bessel processes.

Tuning the electrically evaluated electron Lande g factor in GaAs quantum dots and quantum wells of different well widths

We evaluate the Lande g factor of electrons in quantum dots (QDs) fabricated from GaAs quantum well (QW) structures of different well width. We first determine the Lande electron g factor of the QWs through resistive detection of electron spin resonance and compare it to the enhanced electron g factor determined from analysis of the magneto-transport. Next, we form laterally defined quantum dots using these quantum wells and extract the electron g factor from analysis of the cotunneling and Kondo effect within the quantum dots. We conclude that the Lande electron g factor of the quantum dot is primarily governed by the electron g factor of the quantum well suggesting that well width is an ideal design parameter for g-factor engineering QDs.

Parity independence of the zero-bias conductance peak in a nanowire based topological superconductor-quantum dot hybrid device

We explore the signatures of Majorana fermions in a nanowire based topological superconductor-quantum dot-topological superconductor hybrid device by charge transport measurements. The device is made from an epitaxially grown InSb nanowire with two superconductor Nb contacts on a Si/SiO$_2$ substrate. At low temperatures, a quantum dot is formed in the segment of the InSb nanowire between the two Nb contacts and the two Nb contacted segments of the InSb nanowire show superconductivity due to the proximity effect. At zero magnetic field, well defined Coulomb diamonds and the Kondo effect are observed in the charge stability diagram measurements in the Coulomb blockade regime of the quantum dot. Under the application of a finite, sufficiently strong magnetic field, a zero-bias conductance peak structure is observed in the same Coulomb blockade regime. It is found that the zero-bias conductance peak is present in many consecutive Coulomb diamonds, irrespective of the even-odd parity of the quasi-particle occupation number in the quantum dot. In addition, we find that the zero-bias conductance peak is in most cases accompanied by two differential conductance peaks, forming a triple-peak structure, and the separation between the two side peaks in bias voltage shows oscillations closely correlated to the background Coulomb conductance oscillations of the device. The observed zero-bias conductance peak and the associated triple-peak structure are in line with the signatures of Majorana fermion physics in a nanowire based topological superconductor-quantum dot-topological superconductor system, in which the two Majorana bound states adjacent to the quantum dot are hybridized into a pair of quasi-particle states with finite energies and the other two Majorana bound states remain as the zero-energy modes located at the two ends of the entire InSb nanowire.

Single Photoelectron Detection after Selective Excitation of Electron-Heavy Hole and Electron-Light Hole Pairs in Double Quantum Dots

We demonstrate the real-time detection of single photogenerated electrons in two different lateral double quantum dots made in AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells having a thin or a thick AlGaAs barrier layer. The observed incident laser power and photon energy dependences of the photoelectron detection efficiency both indicate that the trapped photoelectrons are, for the thin barrier sample, predominantly photogenerated in the buffer layer followed by tunneling into one of the two dots, whereas for the thick barrier sample they are directly photogenerated in the well. For the latter, single photoelectron detection after selective excitation of the heavy and light hole state in the dot is well resolved. This ensures the applicability of our quantum well-based quantum dot systems for the coherent transfer from single photon polarization to single electron spin states.

Experimental Verification of the Chemical Sensitivity of Two-Site Double Core-Hole States Formed by an X-ray FEL

We have performed X-ray two-photon photoelectron spectroscopy (XTPPS) using the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) in order to study double core-hole (DCH) states of CO2, N2O and N2. The experiment verifies the theory behind the chemical sensitivity of two-site (ts) DCH states by comparing a set of small molecules with respect to the energy shift of the tsDCH state and by extracting the relevant parameters from this shift.

Observation of Majorana Fermions in a Nb-InSb Nanowire-Nb Hybrid Quantum Device

We report on the observation of excitation of Majorana fermions in a Nb-InSb nanowire quantum dot-Nb hybrid system. The InSb nanowire quantum dot is formed between the two Nb contacts by weak Schottky barriers and is thus in the regime of strong couplings to the contacts. Due to the proximity effect, the InSb nanowire segments covered by superconductor Nb contacts turn to superconductors with a superconducting energy gap $Δ^*$. Under an applied magnetic field larger than a critical value for which the Zeeman energy in the InSb nanowire is $E_z\sim Δ^*$, the entire InSb nanowire is found to be in a nontrivial topological superconductor phase, supporting a pair of Majorana fermions, and Cooper pairs can transport between the superconductor Nb contacts via the Majorana fermion states. This transport process will be suppressed when the applied magnetic field becomes larger than a second critical value at which the transition to a trivial topological superconductor phase occurs in the system. This physical scenario has been observed in our experiment. We have found that the measured zero-bias conductance for our hybrid device shows a conductance plateau in a range of the applied magnetic field in quasi-particle Coulomb blockade regions.

Correlation-induced conductance suppression at level degeneracy in a quantum dot

The large, level-dependent g-factors in an InSb nanowire quantum dot allow for the occurrence of a variety of level crossings in the dot. While we observe the standard conductance enhancement in the Coulomb blockade region for aligned levels with different spins due to the Kondo effect, a vanishing of the conductance is found at the alignment of levels with equal spins. This conductance suppression appears as a canyon cutting through the web of direct tunneling lines and an enclosed Coulomb blockade region. In the center of the Coulomb blockade region, we observe the predicted correlation-induced resonance, which now turns out to be part of a larger scenario. Our findings are supported by numerical and analytical calculations.

Dissociative recombination of BeH^+

The cross section for dissociative recombination of BeH^+ is calculated by solution of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation in the local complex potential approximation. The effects of couplings between resonant states and the Rydberg states converging to the ground state of the ion are studied. The relevant potentials, couplings and autoionization widths are extracted using ab initio electron scattering and structure calculations, followed by a diabatization procedure. The calculated cross sections shows a sizable magnitude at low energy, followed by a high-energy peak centered around 1 eV. The electronic couplings between the neutral states induce oscillations in the cross section. Analytical forms for the cross sections at low collision energies are given.

Enhanced cosmic-ray flux toward zeta Persei inferred from laboratory study of H3+ - e- recombination rate

The H3+ molecular ion plays a fundamental role in interstellar chemistry, as it initiates a network of chemical reactions that produce many interstellar molecules. In dense clouds, the H3+ abundance is understood using a simple chemical model, from which observations of H3+ yield valuable estimates of cloud path length, density, and temperature. On the other hand, observations of diffuse clouds have suggested that H3+ is considerably more abundant than expected from the chemical models. However, diffuse cloud models have been hampered by the uncertain values of three key parameters: the rate of H3+ destruction by electrons, the electron fraction, and the cosmic-ray ionisation rate. Here we report a direct experimental measurement of the H3+ destruction rate under nearly interstellar conditions. We also report the observation of H3+ in a diffuse cloud (towards zeta Persei) where the electron fraction is already known. Taken together, these results allow us to derive the value of the third uncertain model parameter: we find that the cosmic-ray ionisation rate in this sightline is forty times faster than previously assumed. If such a high cosmic-ray flux is indeed ubiquitous in diffuse clouds, the discrepancy between chemical models and the previous observations of H3+ can be resolved.
