Normal metal tunnel junction-based superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor: the N-SQUIPT

We report the fabrication and characterization of an alternative design for a superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor (SQUIPT) based on a normal metal (N) probe. The absence of direct Josephson coupling between the proximized metal nanowire and the N probe allows us to observe the full modulation of the wire density of states around zero voltage and current \textit{via} the application of an external magnetic field. This results into a drastic suppression of power dissipation which can be as low as a few $\sim 10^{-17}$ W. In this context the interferometer allows an improvement of up to four orders of magnitude with respect to earlier SQUIPT designs, and makes it ideal for extra-low power cryogenic applications. In addition, the N-SQUIPT has been recently predicted to be the enabling candidate for the implementation of coherent caloritronic devices based on proximity effect.

Performance of the LHCb Outer Tracker

The LHCb Outer Tracker is a gaseous detector covering an area of 5x6 m2 with 12 double layers of straw tubes. The detector with its services are described together with the commissioning and calibration procedures. Based on data of the first LHC running period from 2010 to 2012, the performance of the readout electronics and the single hit resolution and efficiency are presented. The efficiency to detect a hit in the central half of the straw is estimated to be 99.2%, and the position resolution is determined to be approximately 200 um. The Outer Tracker received a dose in the hottest region corresponding to 0.12 C/cm, and no signs of gain deterioration or other ageing effects are observed.

Dirac Strings and Magnetic Monopoles in Spin Ice Dy2Ti2O7

While sources of magnetic fields - magnetic monopoles - have so far proven elusive as elementary particles, several scenarios have been proposed recently in condensed matter physics of emergent quasiparticles resembling monopoles. A particularly simple proposition pertains to spin ice on the highly frustrated pyrochlore lattice. The spin ice state is argued to be well-described by networks of aligned dipoles resembling solenoidal tubes - classical, and observable, versions of a Dirac string. Where these tubes end, the resulting defect looks like a magnetic monopole. We demonstrate, by diffuse neutron scattering, the presence of such strings in the spin-ice Dy2Ti2O7. This is achieved by applying a symmetry-breaking magnetic field with which we can manipulate density and orientation of the strings. In turn, heat capacity is described by a gas of magnetic monopoles interacting via a magnetic Coulomb interaction.

Dimensional crossover in a spin liquid to helimagnet quantum phase transition

Neutron scattering is used to study magnetic field induced ordering in the quasi-1D quantum spin-tube compound Sul--Cu$_2$Cl$_4$ that in zero field has a non-magnetic spin-liquid ground state. The experiments reveal an incommensurate chiral high-field phase stabilized by a geometric frustration of the magnetic interactions. The measured critical exponents $β\approx0.235$ and $ν\approx0.34$ at $H_c\approx3.7$ T point to an unusual sub-critical scaling regime and may reflect the chiral nature of the quantum critical point.

Gap excitations in a four-leg Heisenberg spin tube antiferromagnet

Inelastic neutron scattering is used to investigate magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional quantum spin-liquid system Cu2Cl4 D8C4SO2. Contrary to previously conjectured models that relied on bond-alternating nearest neighbor interactions in the spin chains, the dominant interactions are actually next-nearest-neighbor in-chain antiferromagnetic couplings. The appropriate Heisenberg Hamiltonian is equivalent to that of a S = 1/2 4-leg spin-tube with almost perfect one dimensionality and no bond alternation. A partial geometric frustration of rung interactions induces a small incommensurability of short-range spin correlations.

Drastic Change of Magnetic Phase Diagram in Doped Quantum Antiferromagnet TlCu$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$Cl$_3$

TlCuCl$_3$ is a coupled spin dimer system, which has a singlet ground state with an excitation gap of $Δ/gμ_{\mathrm B}$ = 5.5 T. TlCu$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$Cl$_3$ doped with nonmagnetic Mg$^{2+}$ ions undergoes impurity-induced magnetic ordering. Because triplet excitation with a finite gap still remains, this doped system can also undergo magnetic-field-induced magnetic ordering. By specific heat measurements and neutron scattering experiments under a magnetic field, we investigated the phase diagram in TlCu$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$Cl$_3$ with $x\sim 0.01$, and found that impurity- and field-induced ordered phases are the same. The gapped spin liquid state observed in pure TlCuCl$_3$ is completely wiped out by the small amount of doping.

Magnetization plateaux of S = 1/2 two-dimensional frustrated antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$

The field induced magnetic phase transitions of Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ were investigated by means of magnetization process and neutron scattering experiments. This system undergoes magnetic phase transition at Neél temperature $T_\mathrm{N}=1.4$ K at zero field, and exhibits the magnetization plateau at approximately one third of the saturation magnetization for the field directions $H\parallel b$ and $H\parallel c$. In the present study, additional symptom of the two-third magnetization plateau was found in the field derivative of the magnetization process. The magnetic structure was found to be incommensurate with the ordering vector $\boldsymbol{Q}=(0, 0.575, 0)$ at zero field. With increasing magnetic field parallel to the c-axis, the ordering vector increases continuously and is locked at $\boldsymbol{Q}=(0, 0.662, 0)$ in the plateau field range $13.1 \mathrm{T} < H < 14.4 \mathrm{T}$. This indicates that the collinear \textit{up-up-down} spin structure is stabilized by quantum fluctuation at the magnetization plateau.

Excitations of the field-induced soliton lattice in CuGeO3

Here we report the first inelastic neutron scattering study of the magnetic excitations in the incommensurate phase of a spin-Peierls material. The results on CuGeO3 provide direct evidence of a finite excitation gap, two sharp magnetic excitation branches and a very low-lying excitation which is identified as a phason mode, the Goldstone mode of the incommensurate soliton lattice.
