Scaling properties of mono-layer graphene away from the Dirac point

The statistical properties of the carrier density profile of graphene in the ground state in the presence particle-particle interaction and random charged impurity in zero gate voltage has been recently obtained by Najafi \textit{et al.} (Phys. Rev E95, 032112 (2017)). The non-zero chemical potential ($μ$) in gated graphene has non-trivial effects on electron-hole puddles, since it generates mass in the Dirac action and destroys the scaling behaviors of the effective Thomas-Fermi-Dirac theory. We provide detailed analysis on the resulting spatially inhomogeneous system in the framework of the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac theory for the Gaussian (white noise) disorder potential. We show that, the chemical potential in this system as a random surface, destroys the self-similarity, and the charge field is non-Gaussian. We find that the two-body correlation functions are factorized to two terms: a pure function of the chemical potential and a pure function of the distance. The spatial dependence of these correlation functions is double-logarithmic, e.g. the two-point density correlation $D_2(r,μ)\propto μ^2\exp\left[-\left(-a_D\ln\ln r^{β_D}\right)^{α_D} \right]$ ($α_D=1.82$, $β_D=0.263$ and $a_D=0.955$). The Fourier power spectrum function behaves like $\ln(S(q))=-β_S^{-a_S}\left(\ln q \right)^{a_S}+2\ln μ$ ($a_S=3.0\pm 0.1$ and $β_S=2.08\pm 0.03$) in contrast to the ordinary Gaussian rough surfaces for which $a_S=1$ and $β_S=\frac{1}{2}(1+α)^{-1}$, ($α$ being the roughness exponent). The geometrical properties are however similar to the un-gated ($μ=0$) case, with the exponents that are reported in the text.

Gaussian Free Field in the background of correlated random clusters, formed by metallic nanoparticles

The effect of metallic nano-particles (MNPs) on the electrostatic potential of a disordered 2D dielectric media is considered. The disorder in the media is assumed to be white-noise Coulomb impurities with normal distribution. To realize the correlations between the MNPs we have used the Ising model with an artificial temperature $T$ that controls the number of MNPs as well as their correlations. In the $T\rightarrow 0$ limit, one retrieves the Gaussian free field (GFF), and in the finite temperature the problem is equivalent to a GFF in iso-potential islands. The problem is argued to be equivalent to a scale-invariant random surface with some critical exponents which vary with $T$ and correspondingly are correlation-dependent. Two type of observables have been considered: local and global quantities. We have observed that the MNPs soften the random potential and reduce its statistical fluctuations. This softening is observed in the local as well as the geometrical quantities. The correlation function of the electrostatic and its total variance are observed to be logarithmic just like the GFF, i.e. the roughness exponent remains zero for all temperatures, whereas the proportionality constants scale with $T-T_c$. The fractal dimension of iso-potential lines ($D_f$), the exponent of the distribution function of the gyration radius ($τ_r$), and the loop lengths ($τ_l$), and also the exponent of the loop Green function $x_l$ change in terms of $T-T_c$ in a power-law fashion, with some critical exponents reported in the text. Importantly we have observed that $D_f(T)-D_f(T_c)\sim\frac{1}{\sqrt{ξ(T)}}$, in which $ξ(T)$ is the spin correlation length in the Ising model.

Interaction-disorder-driven characteristic momentum in graphene, approach of multi-body distribution functions

Multi-point probability measures along with the dielectric function of Dirac Fermions in mono-layer graphene containing particle-particle and white-noise (out-plane) disorder interactions on an equal footing in the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac approximation is investigated. By calculating the one-body carrier density probability measure of the graphene sheet, we show that the density fluctuation ($ζ^{-1}$) is related to the disorder strength ($n_i$), the interaction parameter ($r_s$) and the average density ($\bar{n}$) via the relation $ζ^{-1}\propto r_sn_i^2\bar{n}^{-1}$ for which $\bar{n}\rightarrow 0$ leads to strong density inhomogeneities, i.e. electron-hole puddles (EHPs), in agreement with the previous works. The general equation governing the two-body distribution probability is obtained and analyzed. We present the analytical solution for some limits which is used for calculating density-density response function. We show that the resulting function shows power-law behaviors in terms of $ζ$ with fractional exponents which are reported. The disorder-averaged polarization operator is shown to be a decreasing function of momentum like ordinary 2D parabolic band systems. It is seen that a disorder-driven momentum $q_{\text{ch}}$ emerges in the system which controls the behaviors of the screened potential. We show that in small densities an instability occurs in which imaginary part of the dielectric function becomes negative and the screened potential changes sign. Corresponding to this instability, some oscillations in charge density along with a screening-anti-screening transition are observed. These effects become dominant in very low densities, strong disorders and strong interactions, the state in which EHPs appear. The total charge probability measure is another quantity which has been investigated in this paper.

Percolation transition in two dimensional electron gas: A quantum cellular automaton model

A new type of disorder-driven electronic percolation transition is found for two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), based on a quantum cellular automaton model. This transition is shown to be accompanied with a metal-insulator transition, as well as a singularity in the electronic compressibility. To this end, the electronic system which is assumed to be in contact with an electronic reservoir, is meshed by using of the phase coherence length $ζ_ϕ$ as an extent which divides the spatial dynamics of the electrons into two separate regimes and controls the localization of electrons. For the scales much smaller than $ζ_ϕ$ the treatment is quantum mechanical, whereas for the scales much larger than $ζ_ϕ$ the picture of semi-classical transport works and the classical Mote Carlo method is used. Thomas-Fermi-Dirac (TFD) theory is employed to find the dependence of the free energy of each cell on the temperature ($T$), the (charged) disorder strength ($Δ$) and the charge content of the cell, and a cellular automaton model for transporting the electrons between the cells is developed. At the transition line (in the $T-Δ$ space) the geometrical (e.g. correlation length) quantities also diverge and some power-law behaviors emerge with some critical exponents in agreement with the Gaussian free field (GFF) and the percolation theory. In the percolating side the spanning cluster probability (SCP) (as a realization of the conductivity) has a decreasing behavior in terms of the temperature which is the characteristics of the metallic phase. Our simple model yields the important features of the experimental observations, e.g. the singularity in the conductivity in some critical density and also the universality (non-universality) of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) for the small (large) disorders in 2DEG.

Power spectrum of rare events in two-dimensional BTW model, violation of $1/f$ noise hypothesis

One of the primitive aims of the two-dimensional BTW model had been to explain the $1/f^α$ noise which is widely seen in the natural systems. In this paper we study some time signals, namely the activity inside an avalanche ($x(t)$), the avalanches sizes ($s(T)$) and the rare events waiting time (REWT) ($τ(n)$ as a new type of noise). The latter is expected to be important in predicting the period and also the vastness of the upcoming large scale events in a sequence of self-organized natural events. Especially we report some exponential anti-correlation behaviors for $s(T)$ and $τ(n)$ which are finite-size effects. Two characteristic time scales $δT_{s}$ and $δT_τ$ emerge in our analysis. It is proposed that the power spectrum of $s(T)$ and $τ(n)$ behave like $\left( b_{s,τ}(L)^2+ω^2\right)^{-\frac{1}{2}}$, in which $b_{s}$ and $b_τ$ are some $L$-dependent parameters and $ω$ is the angular frequency. The $1/f$ noise is therefore obtained in the limit $ω\gg b_{s,τ}$. $b_{s}$ and $b_τ$ decrease also in a power-law fashion with the system size $L$, which signals the fact that in the thermodynamic limit the power spectrum tends to the Dirac delta function.

Artificial Kerr effect on the self-focusing of laser in a dissipative suspension of metallic nanoparticles

Self-focusing of laser beam propagating through a dissipative suspension of metallic nanoparticles is studied. Impact of imaginary part of nanoparticle polarizability on the optical force and consequently on the particles rearrangement in the presence of laser fields with an initial Gaussian profile is considered. It is shown that considering absorption of wave, leads to the creation of optical force along the wave travelling direction which can cause longitudinal distribution of nanoparticles density. Considering fifth order nonlinearity of wave amplitude that comes from simultaneous considering of normal Kerr effect produced by the inhomogeneity of refractive index resulted from ponderomotive force acting on electrons and artificial Kerr nonlinearity caused by the polarization optical force acting on particles, set of differential equations describing nonlinear steady-state evolution of laser beam is derived by using a non-paraxial method. Evolution of laser spot size for different frequencies is investigated and optimum frequency range for improving focusing property is determined. It is shown that the artificial Kerr effect causes concentration of particles near the propagation axis that can reduce threshold power for occurring self-focusing.

Sandpile on uncorrelated site-diluted percolation lattice; From three to two dimensions

The BTW sandpile model is considered on three dimensional percolation lattice which is tunned with the occupation parameter $p$. Along with the three-dimensional avalanches, we study the energy propagation in two-dimensional cross-sections. We use the moment analysis to extract the exponents for two separate cases: the critical ($p=p_c\equiv p_c^{3D}$) and the off-critical ($p_c<p\leq 1$) cases. The three-dimensional avalanches at $p=p_c$ has exponents like the regular 2D BTW model, whereas the exponents for the 2D cross-sections have serious similarities with the 2D critical Ising model. The moment analysis show that finite size scaling theory is the fulfilled, and some hyper-scaling relations are confirmed. For the off-critical lattice, the exponents change logarithmically with $p-p_c$, for which the cut-off exponents $ν$ drop discontinuously from $p=p_c$ to the other values. The analysis for the 2D cross-sections show a singular behavior at some $p_0\approx p_c^{2D}$ ($p_c^{3D}$ and $p_c^{2D}$ being three- and two-dimensional percolation thresholds). We argue that there are two separate phases in the cross-sections, namely $p_c^{3D}\leq p<p_c^{2D}$ which, due to lack of 2D percolation cluster, has no thermodynamic limit, and $p\geq p_c^{2D}$ having the chance to involve percolated clusters.

Coupling of $c=-2$ and $c=\frac{1}{2}$ and $c=0$ conformal field theories: The geometrical point of view

The coupling of the $c=-2$, $c=\frac{1}{2}$ and $c=0$ conformal field theories are numerically considered in this paper. As the prototypes of the couplings, $(c_1=-2)\oplus (c_2=0)$ and $(c_1=-2)\oplus (c_2=\frac{1}{2})$, we consider the BTW model on the 2D square critical site-percolation and the BTW model on Ising-correlated percolation lattices respectively. Some geometrical techniques are used to characterize the presumable conformal symmetry of the resultant systems. Using the Schramm-Loewrner evolution (SLE), we find that the algebra of the central charges of the coupled models is closed, namely the former case results to two-dimensional self-avoiding walk (SAW) fixed point corresponding to $c=0$ conformal field theory, whereas the latter one results to the two-dimensional critical Ising fixed point corresponding to the $c=\frac{1}{2}$ conformal field theory.

Statistical Investigation of Avalanches of Three Dimensional Small-World Networks and their Boundary and Bulk Cross-Sections

In many situations we are interested in the propagation of energy in some portions of a three dimensional system with dilute long-range links. In this paper sandpile model is defined on the three-dimensional small world network with real dissipative boundaries and the energy propagation is studied in three-dimensions as well as the two-dimensional cross sections. Two types of cross section are defined in the system, one in the bulk and another in the system boundary. The motivation of this is to make clear how the statistics of the avalanches in the bulk cross section tend to the statistics of the dissipative avalanches, defined in the boundaries as the concentration of long range links ($α$) increases. This trend is numerically shown to be power law in a manner described in the paper. Two regimes of $α$ are considered in this work. For sufficiently small $α$s the dominant behavior of the system is just like that of the regular BTW, whereas for the intermediate values the behavior is non-trivial with some exponents that are reported in the paper. It is shown that the spatial extent up to which the statistics is similar to the regular BTW model scales with $α$ just like the dissipative BTW model with the dissipation factor (mass in the corresponding ghost model) $m^2\sim α$ for the three-dimensional system as well as its two-dimensional cross-sections.

Self-Avoiding Walk on the square site-diluted Ising-correlated lattice

The self-avoiding walk on the square site-diluted correlated percolation lattice is considered. The Ising model is employed to realize the spatial correlations of the metric space. As a well-accepted result, the (generalized) Flory's mean field relation is tested to measure the effect of correlation. After exploring a perturbative Fokker-Planck-like equation, we apply an enriched Rosenbluth Monte Carlo method to study the problem. To be more precise, the winding angel analysis is also performed from which the diffusivity parameter of Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) theory ($κ$) is extracted. We find that at the critical Ising (host) system the exponents are in agreement with the Flory's approximation. For the off-critical Ising system we find also a new behavior for the fractal dimension of the walker trace in terms of the correlation length of the Ising system $ξ(T)$, i.e. $D_F^{\text{SAW}}(T)-D_F^{\text{SAW}}(T_c)\sim \frac{1}{\sqrt{ξ(T)}}$.

Conformal symmetry of electron-hole puddles in ungated graphene

In this paper the mono-layer graphene at the charge neutrality point is considered whithin Thomas-Fermi-Dirac theory, treating inhomogeneous external potentials and electron-electron interactions on equal footing. We present some general considerations concerning the probability measure of the ground state charge density. The system shows degrees of self-similarity. By analyzing the ground state carrier density profile, we show that although it is not Gaussian, the critical exponents are consistent with Kondev hyper-scaling relations. Using Schramm-Loewner (SLE) evolution we show that the ungated graphene has conformal invariance and the random zero-charge density contours are SLE$_κ$ with $κ=1.8\pm 0.2$.

Scale-invariant puddles in Graphene: Geometric properties of electron-hole distribution at the Dirac point

We characterize the carrier density profile of the ground state of graphene in the presence of particle-particle interaction and random charged impurity for zero gate voltage. We provide detailed analysis on the resulting spatially inhomogeneous electron gas taking into account the particle-particle interaction and the remote coulomb disorder on an equal footing within the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac theory. We present some general features of the carrier density probability measure of the graphene sheet. We also show that, when viewed as a random surface, the resulting electron-hole puddles at zero chemical potential show peculiar self-similar statistical properties. Although the disorder potential is chosen to be Gaussian, we show that the charge field is non-Gaussian with unusual Kondev relations which can be regarded as a new class of two-dimensional (2D) random-field surfaces.

Fokker-Planck Equation of Schramm-Loewner Evolution

In this paper we statistically analyze the Fokker-Planck (FP) equation of Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) and its variant SLE($κ,ρ_c$). After exploring the derivation and the properties of the Langevin equation of the tip of the SLE trace, we obtain the long and short time behaviors of the chordal SLE traces. We analyze the solutions of the FP and the corresponding Langevin equations and connect it to the conformal field theory (CFT) and present some exact results. We find the perturbative FP equation of the SLE($κ,ρ_c$) traces and show that it is related to the higher order correlation functions. Using the Langevin equation we find the long-time behaviors in this case. The CFT correspondence of this case is established and some exact results are presented.

Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld Model in the Finite Range Random Link Lattice

We consider the BTW model in random link lattices with finite range interaction (RLFRI). The degree distribution for nodes is considered to be uniform in the interval $(0,n_0)$. We numerically calculate the exponents of the distribution functions in terms of $(n_0,R)$ in which $R$ is the range of interactions. Dijkstra radius is utilized to calculate the fractal dimension of the avalanches. Our analysis shows that there is, at least one length scale ($r_0(n_0,R)$) in which the fractal dimension is changed. We find that for the scales smaller than $r_0(n_0,R)$, which is typically one decade, the fractal dimension is nearly independent of $n_0$ and $R$ and is equal to $1.4$, i.e. close to that of the BTW in the regular lattice ($1.25$). Using this fact and other analysis, we conclude that the BTW-type behaviors are dominant for small values of $n_0$ and $R$, whereas for large values of these parameters a new regime is seen in which the exponent of distribution function of avalanche masses is nearly $1.4$. We also numerically calculate the explicit form of the \textit{number of unstable nodes} (NUN) as a time dependent process and show that for regular lattice it is (up to a normalization) proportional to a one dimensional Weiner process and for RLFRI it acquires a drift term. Using this dynamical variable it is numerically shown that we can not continuously approach the regular lattice limit by decreasing $R$.

Water Propagation in the Porous Media, Self-Organized Criticality and Ising Model

In this paper we propose the Ising model to study the propagation of water in 2 dimensional (2D) petroleum reservoir in which each bond between its pores has the probability $p$ of being activated. We analyze the water movement pattern in porous media described by Darcy equations by focusing on its geometrical objects. Using Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) technique we numerically show that at $p=p_c\simeq 0.59$, this model lies within the Ising universality class with the diffusivity parameter $κ=3$ and the fractal dimension $D_f=\frac{11}{8}$. We introduce a self-organized critical model in which the water movement is modeled by a chain of topplings taking place when the amount of water exceeds the critical value and numerically show that it coincides with the numerical reservoir simulation. For this model, the behaviors of distribution functions of the geometrical quantities and the Green function are investigated in terms of $p$. We show that percolation probability has a maximum around $p=0.68$, in contrast to common belief.

Numerical Determination of Boundary Condition Changing Operators

A new numerical method to determine the boundary condition changing (bcc) operators in the statistical models is introduced. This method is based on a variant of Schramm-Loewner Evolution (SLE), namely SLE(κ; ρ). As a prototype, Abelian Sandpile Model (ASM) with a sink on some point on the boundary is considered. Using this method we study the bcc operator corresponding to sink. It is numerically shown that the conformal dimension of the this operator is nearly 0. The most suitable candidate for this operator is the logarithmic partner of the unity operator, as it has been conjectured theoretically.

Left Passage Probability of SLE($κ,ρ$)

SLE($κ,ρ$) is a variant of the Schramm-Loewner Evolution which describes the curves which are not conformal invariant, but are self-similar due to the presence of some other preferred points on the boundary. In this paper we study the left passage probability (LPP) for SLE($κ,ρ$) through field theoretical framework and find the differential equation which govern this probability. This equation is solved (up to two undetermined constants) for the special case $κ= 2$ and $h_ρ= 0$ for large x0 at which the boundary condition changes. This case may be referred to the Abelian sandpile model with a sink on the boundary. As an example, we apply this formalism to SLE($κ,κ-6$) which governs the curves that start from and end on the real axis.

Avalanche frontiers in dissipative abelian sandpile model as off-critical SLE(2)

Avalanche frontiers in Abelian Sandpile Model (ASM) are random simple curves whose continuum limit is known to be a Schramm-Loewner Evolution (SLE) with diffusivity parameter $κ= 2$. In this paper we consider the dissipative ASM and study the statistics of the avalanche and wave frontiers for various rates of dissipation. We examine the scaling behavior of a number of functions such as the correlation length, the exponent of distribution function of loop lengths and gyration radius defined for waves and avalanches. We find that they do scale with the rate of dissipation. Two significant length scales are observed. For length scales much smaller than the correlation length, these curves show properties close to the critical curves and the corresponding diffusivity parameter is nearly the same as the critical limit. We interpret this as the ultra violet (UV) limit where $κ= 2$ corresponding to $c=-2$. For length scales much larger than the correlation length we find that the avalanche frontiers tend to Self-Avoiding Walk, the corresponding driving function is proportional to the Brownian motion with the diffusion parameter $κ=8/3$ corresponding to a field theory with $c = 0$. This is the infra red (IR) limit. Correspondingly the central charge decreases from the IR to the UV point.
