Electroweak Limits on General New Vector Bosons

We study extensions of the Standard Model with general new vector bosons. The full Standard Model gauge symmetry is used to classify the extra vectors and constrain their couplings. We derive the corresponding effective Lagrangian, valid at energies lower than the mass of the extra vectors, and use it to extract limits from electroweak precision observables, including LEP 2 data. We consider both universal and nonuniversal couplings to fermions. We study the interplay of several extra vectors, which can have the effect of opening new regions in parameter space. In particular, it allows to explain the anomaly in the bottom forward-backward asymmetry with perturbative couplings. Finally, we analyze quantitatively the implications for the Higgs mass.

BSM Benchmarks for Effective Field Theories in Higgs and Electroweak Physics

Effective Field Theories (EFTs) capture effects from heavy dynamics at low energy and represent an essential ingredient in the context of Standard Model (SM) precision tests. This document gathers a number of relevant scenarios for heavy physics beyond the SM and presents explicit expressions for the Wilson coefficients in their low-energy EFT. It includes i) weakly coupled scenarios in which one or a few particles of different spins and quantum numbers interact linearly with the SM and generate EFT effects at tree-level, ii) scenarios where heavy particles interact quadratically whereupon the resulting EFT arises only at loop-level and iii) strongly coupled scenarios where the size of Wilson coefficients is controlled by symmetry arguments. This review aims at motivating experimental EFT studies in which only a subset of all possible EFT interactions is used, as well as facilitating the theoretical interpretation of EFT fits.

Effective description of general extensions of the Standard Model: the complete tree-level dictionary

We compute all the tree-level contributions to the Wilson coefficients of the dimension-six Standard-Model effective theory in ultraviolet completions with general scalar, spinor and vector field content and arbitrary interactions. No assumption about the renormalizability of the high-energy theory is made. This provides a complete ultraviolet/infrared dictionary at the classical level, which can be used to study the low-energy implications of any model of interest, and also to look for explicit completions consistent with low-energy data.

Wilsonian renormalisation of CFT correlation functions: Field theory

We examine the precise connection between the exact renormalisation group with local couplings and the renormalisation of correlation functions of composite operators in scale-invariant theories. A geometric description of theory space allows us to select convenient non-linear parametrisations that serve different purposes. First, we identify normal parameters in which the renormalisation group flows take their simplest form; normal correlators are defined by functional differentiation with respect to these parameters. The renormalised correlation functions are given by the continuum limit of correlators associated to a cutoff-dependent parametrisation, which can be related to the renormalisation group flows. The necessary linear and non-linear counterterms in any arbitrary parametrisation arise in a natural way from a change of coordinates. We show that, in a class of minimal subtraction schemes, the renormalised correlators are exactly equal to normal correlators evaluated at a finite cutoff. To illustrate the formalism and the main results, we compare standard diagrammatic calculations in a scalar free-field theory with the structure of the perturbative solutions to the Polchinski equation close to the Gaussian fixed point.

Dimensional regularization vs methods in fixed dimension with and without $γ_5$

We study the Lorentz and Dirac algebra, including antisymmetric $ε$ tensors and the $γ_5$ matrix, in implicit gauge-invariant regularization/renormalization methods defined in fixed integer dimensions. They include constrained differential, implicit and four-dimensional renormalization. We find that these fixed-dimension methods face the same difficulties as the different versions of dimensional regularization. We propose a consistent procedure in these methods, similar to the consistent version of regularization by dimensional reduction.

Holographic renormalisation group flows and renormalisation from a Wilsonian perspective

From the Wilsonian point of view, renormalisable theories are understood as submanifolds in theory space emanating from a particular fixed point under renormalisation group evolution. We show how this picture precisely applies to their gravity duals. We investigate the Hamilton-Jacobi equation satisfied by the Wilson action and find the corresponding fixed points and their eigendeformations, which have a diagonal evolution close to the fixed points. The relevant eigendeformations are used to construct renormalised theories. We explore the relation of this formalism with holographic renormalisation. We also discuss different renormalisation schemes and show that the solutions to the gravity equations of motion can be used as renormalised couplings that parametrise the renormalised theories. This provides a transparent connection between holographic renormalisation group flows in the Wilsonian and non-Wilsonian approaches. The general results are illustrated by explicit calculations in an interacting scalar theory in AdS space.

Asymmetries in top quark pair production at hadron colliders

We review the asymmetries in top quark pair production at the Tevatron and the LHC. We summarize the experimental measurements and the interpretations of a possible excess in terms of new physics. We also review other top quark properties-emphasizing effects related to the $t \bar t$ asymmetries-as well as other collider signals.

A handbook of vector-like quarks: mixing and single production

We obtain constraints on the mixing of vector-like quarks coupling predominantly to the third generation. We consider all (seven) relevant types of vector-like quarks, individually. The constraints are derived from oblique corrections and Z -> b bbar measurements at LEP and SLC. We investigate the implications of these constraints on LHC phenomenology, concerning the decays of the heavy quarks and their single production. We also explore indirect effects of heavy quark mixing in top and bottom couplings. A remarkable effect is the possibility of explaining the anomalous forward-backward asymmetry in Z -> b bbar at LEP, with a hypercharge -5/6 doublet. We also study the impact of the new quarks on single Higgs production at the LHC and Higgs decay.

Vector triplets at the LHC

Several popular extensions of the Standard Model predict extra vector fields that transform as triplets under the gauge group SU(2)_L. These multiplets contain Z' and W' bosons, with masses and couplings related by gauge invariance. We review some model-independent results about these new vector bosons, with emphasis on di-lepton and lepton-plus-missing-energy signals at the LHC.

t tbar charge asymmetry, family and friends

We present the current status of the Tevatron charge asymmetry and its sister asymmetry at the LHC. The relation between both is elucidated, using as framework the collider-independent asymmetries they originate from. Other related observables, such as the t tbar differential distribution and top polarisation, are also discussed.

Top couplings and top partners

We review the model-independent description of the couplings of the top quark to the Higgs and gauge bosons in theories beyond the Standard Model. Then we examine these couplings in the case of arbitrary heavy vector-like quarks mixing with the third family. We also discuss the couplings of these top partners, and comment on implications for LHC searches.

Combining searches of Z' and W' bosons

We study in a model-independent way new neutral and charged vector bosons that could give observable signals with leptonic final states at the LHC. We show, in particular, that a charged vector W' decaying into lepton plus neutrino is accompanied by at least an extra neutral vector boson Z', nearly degenerate with the charged one. Conversely, a Z' boson with significant isospin violation cannot exist without a companion W'. To take advantage of these generic correlations, we perform a combined analysis of LHC data in the dilepton and lepton-plus-missing-energy channels, which allows us to improve the limits from independent analyses. We also develop some tools to easily deal with cases in which several heavy vector bosons with similar masses interfere. Finally, we develop a theoretically consistent framework for the study of the sequential Z' and W' benchmarks.

Asymmetries in t tbar production: LHC versus Tevatron

The measurement of a charge asymmetry in t tbar production at LHC constitutes more than an independent confirmation of the forward-backward asymmetry found at Tevatron. Indeed, both measurements together can be used to identify the source of the asymmetry. This is demonstrated for the case of new Z', W' vector bosons and colour-sextet and triplet scalars, exchanged in t, u channels respectively, and a very heavy axigluon in the s channel.

Shaping the top asymmetry

We study different profiles of the distribution of the top forward-backward asymmetry, depending on the invariant mass of the t tbar pair. We show that they can be reproduced by one or more light colour octets, while keeping moderate departures of the t tbar cross section and invariant mass distributions with respect to the Standard Model predictions at Tevatron and LHC.

Simple models for the top asymmetry: constraints and predictions

We perform a comprehensive study of the allowed range for the Tevatron t tbar forward-backward asymmetries in six representative new physics models: a flavour-changing Z' boson, a scalar isodoublet, a W' boson, a heavy axigluon, a colour-triplet and a colour-sextet scalar. We devote special attention to the constraints from the t tbar tail at LHC on the parameter space, which will be dramatic if the measurements agree with the SM prediction, specially for Z' and W' bosons. We also study the predictions for the charge asymmetries at LHC and compare several proposed definitions.

Impact of extra particles on indirect Z' limits

We study the possibility of relaxing the indirect limits on extra neutral vector bosons by their interplay with additional new particles. They can be systematically weakened, even below present direct bounds at colliders, by the addition of more vector bosons and/or scalars designed for this purpose. Otherwise, they appear to be robust.

No like-sign tops at Tevatron: Constraints on extended models and implications for the t tbar asymmetry

We use a recent upper limit from CDF on like-sign top pair production to place constraints on general new vector bosons and scalars mediating u u -> t t. The possible vector bosons comprise neutral colour singlets or octets, and charge 4/3 colour triplets or sextets, whereas the new scalars can be neutral colour singlets or octets and charge 4/3 colour sextets. We also estimate the expected bounds from like-sign top pair production at LHC in the near future. Then, we address the implications of these limits for the forward-backward asymmetry in t tbar production measured at Tevatron. In particular, we find that models explaining the observed asymmetry by the exchange of a single t-channel heavy Z' boson are already excluded. On the other hand, light Z' bosons with a mass M_Z' ~ 150 GeV, which could also account for a recent CDF dijet excess in W+jet production, are barely allowed.

Probing the Tevatron t tbar asymmetry at LHC

We use an effective operator framework to study the contributions to the Tevatron t tbar asymmetry from arbitrary vector bosons and scalars, and compare with their effect on the t tbar tail at LHC. Our study shows, for example, that models reproducing the t tbar asymmetry by exchange of Z' and W' bosons or colour-triplet scalars lead to a large enhancement in the t tbar tail at LHC. This fact can be used to exclude these models as the sole explanation for the asymmetry, using the data already collected by CMS and ATLAS. Our analysis is model independent in the sense that we scan over all possible extra particles contributing to the asymmetry, and allow for general couplings. We also explore a class of Standard Model extensions which can accommodate the Tevatron asymmetry without contributing to the total t tbar cross section at first order, so that the enhancement of the tail at Tevatron and LHC is moderate.
