Electroweak constraints on see-saw messengers and their implications for LHC

We review the present electroweak precision data constraints on the mediators of the three types of see-saw mechanisms. Except in the see-saw mechanism of type I, with the heavy neutrino singlets being mainly produced through their mixing with the Standard Model leptons, LHC will be able to discover or put limits on new scalar (see-saw of type II) and lepton (see-saw of type III) triplets near the TeV. If discovered, it may be possible in the simplest models to measure the light neutrino mass and mixing properties that neutrino oscillation experiments are insensitive to.

Effects of new leptons in Electroweak Precision Data

We obtain limits on generic vector-like leptons at the TeV scale from electroweak precision tests. These limits are complementary to the ones obtained from lepton flavour violating processes. In general, the quality of the global electroweak fit is comparable to the one for the Standard Model. In the case of an extra neutrino singlet mixing with the muon or electron, the global fit allows for a relatively large Higgs mass (M_H < 260 GeV at 90 % C.L.), thus relaxing the tension between the direct LEP limit and the Standard Model fit.

Bulk fields with general brane kinetic terms

We analyse the effect of general brane kinetic terms for bulk scalars, fermions and gauge bosons in theories with extra dimensions, with and without supersymmetry. We find in particular a singular behaviour when these terms contain derivatives orthogonal to the brane. This is brought about by $δ(0)$ divergences arising at second and higher order in perturbation theory. We argue that this behaviour can be smoothed down by classical renormalization.

Physics of Brane Kinetic Terms

Models with extra dimensions may give new effects visible at future experiments. In these models, bulk fields can develop localized corrections to their kinetic terms which can modify the phenomenological predictions in a sizeable way. We review the case in which both gauge bosons and fermions propagate in the bulk, and discuss the limits on the parameter space arising from electroweak precision data.

Bulk fields with brane terms

In theories with branes, bulk fields get in general divergent corrections localized on these defects. Hence, the corresponding brane terms are renormalized and should be included in the effective theory from the very beginning. We review the phenomenology associated to brane kinetic terms for different spins and backgrounds, and point out that renormalization is required already at the classical level.

Some consequences of brane kinetic terms for bulk fermions

In theories with extra dimensions there are generically brane kinetic terms for fields living in the bulk. These modify the masses and wave functions of the Kaluza-Klein expansions, and then the effective four dimensional gauge and Yukawa couplings of the corresponding modes. Here, we discuss some phenomenological consequences of fermion brane kinetic terms, emphasizing their implications for models with low compactification scales, whose agreement with experiment can be improved, and observable effects at collider energies, like the production of new fermions.

The beta function of N=1 SYM in Differential Renormalization

Using differential renormalization, we calculate the complete two-point function of the background gauge superfield in pure N=1 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory to two loops. Ultraviolet and (off-shell) infrared divergences are renormalized in position and momentum space respectively. This allows us to reobtain the beta function from the dependence on the ultraviolet renormalization scale in an infrared-safe way. The two-loop coefficient of the beta function is generated by the one-loop ultraviolet renormalization of the quantum gauge field via nonlocal terms which are infrared divergent on shell. We also discuss the connection of the beta function to the flow of the Wilsonian coupling.

Exact calculation of the radiatively-induced Lorentz and CPT violation in QED

Radiative corrections arising from the axial coupling of charged fermions to a constant vector b_μcan induce a Lorentz- and CPT-violating Chern-Simons term in the QED action. We calculate the exact one-loop correction to this term keeping the full b_μdependence, and show that in the physically interesting cases it coincides with the lowest-order result. The effect of regularization and renormalization and the implications of the result are briefly discussed.

Observable contributions of new exotic quarks to quark mixing

Models with new vector-like quarks can produce observable quark mixing effects which are forbidden in the Standard Model. We classify all such models and write down the effective Lagrangian that results from integrating out the new quarks. We study the relations between neutral and charged currents and discuss how to distinguish among the different possibilities.

Effective description of quark mixing

We use the effective Lagrangian formalism to describe quark mixing. The new W, Z and H couplings generalizing the CKM matrix and the GIM mechanism fulfil relations and inequalities which allow to discriminate among different SM extensions. As a by-product we give a useful parametrization of the generalized CKM matrix. We also show that the largest possible departures from the SM predictions result from heavy exotic fermions, which can induce, for example, top FCNC large enough to be observable at future colliders.

Near-extremal correlators and vanishing supergravity couplings in AdS/CFT

We study near-extremal n-point correlation functions of chiral primary operators, in which the maximal scale dimension k is related to the others by k=\sum_i k_i-m with m equal to or smaller than n-3. Through order g^2 in field theory, we show that these correlators are simple sums of terms each of which factors into products of lower-point correlators. Terms which contain only factors of two- and three-point functions are not renormalized, but other terms have non-vanishing order g^2 corrections. We then show that the contributing AdS exchange diagrams neatly match this factored structure. In particular, for n=4,5 precise agreement in form and coefficient is established between supergravity and the non-renormalized factored terms from field theory. On the other hand, contact diagrams in supergravity would produce a non-factored structure. This leads us to conjecture that the corresponding bulk couplings vanish, so as to achieve full agreement between the structure of these correlators in supergravity and weak-coupling field theory.

Non-renormalization of next-to-extremal correlators in N=4 SYM and the AdS/CFT correspondence

We show that next-to-extremal correlators of chiral primary operators in N=4 SYM theory do not receive quantum corrections to first order in perturbation theory. Furthermore we consider next-to-extremal correlators within AdS supergravity. Here the exchange diagrams contributing to these correlators yield results of the same free-field form as obtained within field theory. This suggests that quantum corrections vanish at strong coupling as well.

Differential Renormalization and Dimensional Reduction

We describe the equivalence at one loop between constrained differential renormalization and regularization by dimensional reduction in the MS scheme. To illustrate it, we reexamine the calculation of supergravity corrections to (g-2)_l.

Differential Renormalization of Gauge Theories

The scope of constrained differential renormalization is to provide renormalized expressions for Feynman graphs, preserving at the same time the Ward identities of the theory. It has been shown recently that this can be done consistently at least to one loop for abelian and non-abelian gauge theories. We briefly review these results, evaluate as an example the gluon selfenergy in both coordinate and momentum space, and comment on anomalies.

Automatized One-Loop Calculations in 4 and D dimensions

Two program packages are presented for evaluating one-loop amplitudes. They can work either in dimensional regularization or in constrained differential renormalization. The latter method is found at the one-loop level to be equivalent to regularization by dimensional reduction.

Constraining differential renormalization in abelian gauge theories

We present a procedure of differential renormalization at the one loop level which avoids introducing unnecessary renormalization constants and automatically preserves abelian gauge invariance. The amplitudes are expressed in terms of a basis of singular functions. The local terms appearing in the renormalization of these functions are determined by requiring consistency with the propagator equation. Previous results in abelian theories, with and without supersymmetry, are discussed in this context.
