Large-scale real-time signal processing in physics experiments: The ALICE TPC FPGA pipeline

For LHC Run 3, the ALICE Time Projection Chamber was upgraded to operate in continuous readout mode. Interaction rates of up to 50 kHz in Pb-Pb collisions require real-time processing of more than 3 TB/s of raw detector data. This requirement is met by a custom FPGA-based processing pipeline that performs the complete front-end data treatment fully in-stream, including common-mode correction, pedestal subtraction, ion-tail filtering, zero suppression, and dense data packing. A central element of the design is a highly parallel common-mode correction algorithm operating directly on the streaming data. It robustly identifies signal-free readout channels on a time-bin basis and applies pad-dependent scaling to compensate for local variations in capacitive coupling in the GEM readout. In combination with pedestal subtraction and ion-tail filtering, this enables accurate baseline restoration under extreme high-occupancy conditions, preventing signal loss while efficiently suppressing noise prior to zero suppression. The pipeline operates continuously at the full detector bandwidth and reduces the raw input rate to about 900 GB/s for Pb-Pb collisions at the target interaction rate. Overall, it represents a large-scale FPGA-based real-time signal-processing implementation for high-energy physics detector readout.

Does the suppression shown at LHC in O-O collisions follow the systematics obtained for A-A collisions ?

In this paper we present to what extent recent experimental results obtained for $π^{0}$ suppression in O-O collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=5.36 TeV fit into the systematics for much heavier systems. The systematics with which the comparison is made was published a few years ago \cite{Pet_1} in terms of charged particles suppression $R_{AA}$ as a function of $\langle N_{part} \rangle$ and $\langle dN_{ch}/dη\rangle$. The values of $R_{AA}$ at $\langle dN_{ch}/dη\rangle$ and $\langle N_{part} \rangle$ experimentally measured and estimated by Glauber MC, respectively, for O-O collisions are in good agreement with the systematics obtained for A-A collisions.

Aging suppression in Multistrip Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers for high counting rate experiments

A long term operation of Multi-Strip Multi-Gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MSMGRPC) with gas mixtures based on C2H2F4 and SF6 leads to aging effects, observed as depositions on the surface of the resistive electrodes. Moreover, enhanced depositions and higher noise rates were evidenced around the nylon spacers used for defining the gas gaps between the resistive electrodes. The aging effects are reflected in an increase of the dark current and dark counting rate, with negative impact on the long term performance of the chamber and data volume in a free running readout mode operation. MSMGRPC prototypes designed with a direct gas flow through the gas gaps and minimization of the number of spacers in the active area were developed as mitigation solution. Prototypes with this new design and different granularities were assembled using fishing line as spacers and investigated for aging effects. Although a significant reduction in the dark current and dark counting rate was evidenced, dark counting rate localized around the fishing line spacers remains. In this paper, a new generation of direct flow chambers based on discrete spacers is presented. The results of their aging investigations show that, even at lower gas flows, the aging effects become negligible.

Features of strangeness production in pp and heavy ion collisions

Based on the existing experimental data for A-A collisions starting from the AGS energies up to the LHC ones, various systematics related to strange hadrons and anti-hadrons are presented. The ratio between the average transverse momentum and the square root of the total particle multiplicity per unit rapidity and unit transverse overlap area decreases with collision energy for a given centrality or with centrality for a given collision energy, thus supporting the predictions of CGC and percolation based approaches. The dependence on the square root of the total multiplicity per unit rapidity and unit transverse overlap area of the slope and offset extracted from the $\langle p_T\rangle$-particle mass correlation and of the average transverse expansion velocity and kinetic freeze-out temperature parameters obtained from BGBW fits of the pT spectra for strange hadrons is compared to that for pions, kaons and protons. The detailed study of the entropy density dependence of the ratio of strange hadron yields per unit rapidity to the total particle multiplicity per unit rapidity, at different collision energies and centralities, reveals the necessity to study separately strange hadrons and anti-hadrons. The correlation between the ratio of the single- and multi- strange anti-hadron yield per unit rapidity to the total particle multiplicity per unit rapidity and the entropy density is presented as a function of the fireball size. A maximum is evidenced in the similar correlation established for combined and separate species of strange hadrons, at different centralities, in the region where a transition from the baryon-dominated matter to the meson-dominated one takes place. The position of this maximum does not depend on the mass of the corresponding strange hadron. Comparison with pp experimental data reveals another similarity between pp and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC energies.

Features of hadronic and deconfined matter from AGS to LHC energies

Previous extensive studies on the dependence of the average transverse momentum, its slope as a function of the hadron mass and the average transverse expansion on the particle multiplicity per unit rapidity and unit transverse overlap area of the colliding partners are extended to the ratio of the energy density to the entropy density. The behaviour of the ratio between the average transverse momentum and the square root of the particle multiplicity per unit rapidity and unit transverse overlap area $\langle p_T \rangle/\sqrt{\langle dN/dy\rangle/S_{\perp}}$ as a function of collision energy for a given centrality or as a function of centrality for a given collision energy supports the predictions of CGC and percolation based approaches. The dependence of the ratio of the energy density $\langle dE_{T}/dy\rangle/S_{\perp}$ to the entropy density $\langle dN/dy\rangle/S_{\perp}$ at different collision centralities for A-A collisions from AGS, SPS, RHIC and LHC energies is presented. The trend of this ratio towards a plateau at the highest RHIC energies followed by a steep rise at LHC energies is in agreement with theoretical predictions made 40 years ago that indicate this behaviour as a signature of a phase transition. This pattern strongly depends on the collision geometry, converging towards the dependence that characterizes the pp minimum bias (MB) collisions for the most peripheral A-A collisions. Expected similarities between pp and Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies are confirmed.

Geometrical scaling for light flavor hadrons

As it is well known by now, the pre-partonic phase in hadron collisions is successfully described by the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) approach. Previous studies, based on experimental data obtained on a wide range of energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for $π^+$, $K^+$ and $p$, evidenced that observables related to the dynamics of the collision, i.e. the mean transverse momentum ($\langle p_T \rangle$), the slope of the $\langle p_T \rangle$ dependence on the mass of the hadrons and the average transverse flow velocity obtained from the simultaneous fits of the $p_T$ spectra of the particles with the Boltzmann-Gibbs Blast Wave (BGBW) expression, scale rather well as a function of the square root of the ratio of the particle density over unit of rapidity to the overlapping area of the colliding nuclei ($\sqrt{(dN/dy)/S_\perp}$), the relevant scale in the gluon saturation picture. Results of a similar study extended to strange and multi-strange hadrons, for both proton-proton (\textit{pp}) and heavy-ion (\textit{A-A}) collision systems are presented in the present paper. The similarities and differences in the behaviour of strange hadrons relative to non-strange hadrons are discussed.

Ageing studies of Multi-Strip Multi-Gap Resistive Plate Counters based on low resistivity glass electrodes in high irradiation dose

Detailed tests and analysis of ageing effects of high irradiation dose on Multi-Strip Multi-Gap Resistive Plate Counters based on low resistivity glass electrodes were performed. MSMGRPC efficiency and cluster size before irradiation are measured and compared with their values after irradiation in a high irradiation dose accessed at a multi-purpose irradiation facility of IFIN-HH based on $^{60}$Co source. The composition and properties of the deposited layers on the glass electrodes, studied based on a multitude of analysis methods, i.e. SEM, XPS, foil-ERDA, RBS, AFM and THz-TDS, are presented.

Considerations on the suppression of charged particles and $π^0$ in high energy heavy ion collisions

Experimental results related to charged particle and $π^{0}$ suppression obtained at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven for Au-Au (Cu-Cu) collisions and at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN for Pb-Pb (Xe-Xe) collisions are compiled in terms of the usual nuclear modification factors, $R_{AA} $ and $R_{CP}$, and of the newly introduced $R^{N}_{AA}$ and $R^{N}_{CP}$ as a function of $\langle N_{part} \rangle$ and $\langle dN_{ch}/dη\rangle$. The studies are focused on a $p_T$ range in the region of maximum suppression evidenced in the experiments. The core contribution to $R_{AA}$ is presented. Considerations on the missing suppression in high charged particle multiplicity events for pp collisions at 7 TeV are presented. The trends of $R_{CP}$ and $R^N_{CP}$ for charged particles and $R_{AA}^{π^0}$ and $(R_{AA}^N)^{π^0}$ as a function of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$, measured at RHIC in Au-Au collisions and at LHC in Pb-Pb collisions, show a suppression that becomes larger from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 39 GeV up to $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV, followed by a saturation up to the highest energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ =5.02 TeV in Pb-Pb collisions. A clear change in the dependence of $(1-R_{AA}^{π^0})/\langle dN/dy \rangle$ for the most central collisions as a function of collision energy is evidenced in the region of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ =62.4 - 130 GeV.

Wide acceptance measurement of the K$^-$/K$^+$ ratio from Ni+Ni collisions at 1.91A GeV

The FOPI Collaboration at the GSI SIS-18 synchrotron measured charged kaons from central and semi-central collisions of Ni+Ni at a beam energy of 1.91A GeV. We present the distribution of the K$^-$\K$^+$ ratio on the energy vs polar angle plane in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass frame, with and without subtraction of the contribution of $ϕ$(1020) meson decays to the K$^-$ yield. The acceptance of the current experiment is substantially wider compared to the previous measurement of the same colliding system. The ratio of K$^-$ to K$^+$ energy spectra is expected to be sensitive to the in-medium modifications of basic kaon properties like mass. Recent results obtained by the HADES Collaboration at 1.23A and 1.76A GeV indicate that after inclusion of the $ϕ$ meson decay contribution to the K$^-$ production no difference between the slopes of the K$^-$ and K$^+$ energy spectra is observed within uncertainties. For our data a linear fit to this ratio obtained after subtraction of the $ϕ$ meson contribution still shows a decrease with kinetic energy, although a constant value cannot be rejected. The contribution of $Λ(1520) \rightarrow p\text{K}^-$ decays estimated from fitting the thermal model to the experimental yields appears to be another factor of moderate relevance.

Multiplicity dependent $p_T$ distributions of identified particles in pp collisions at 7 TeV within HIJING/$B\bar{B}$ v2.0 model

Effects of strong longitudinal color fields (SCF) on the identified (anti)particle transverse momentum ($p_T$) distributions in $ pp$ collision at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV are investigated within the framework of the {\small HIJING/BB v2.0} model. The comparison with the experiment is performed in terms of the correlation between mean transverse momentum ($\langle p_t\rangle$) and multiplicity (N$_{ch}^*$) of charged particles at central rapidity, as well as the ratios of the $p_T$ distributions to the one corresponding to the minimum bias (MB) pp collisions at the same energy, each of them normalized to the corresponding charged particle density, for high multiplicity $\mbox{(HM, N$_{ch}>100$)}$ and low multiplicity $\mbox{(LM, N$_{ch}<100$)}$ class of events. The theoretical calculations show that an increase of the strength of color fields (as characterized by the effective values of the string tension $κ$), from $κ$ = 2 GeV/fm to $κ$ = 5 GeV/fm from LM to HM class of events, respectively, lead to a ratio at low and intermediate $p_T$ (i.e., \mbox{$ 1$GeV/{\it c} $< p_{T} < 6 $ GeV/{\it c}}) consistent with recent data obtained at LHC by the ALICE Collaboration.

Geometrical scaling for energies available at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider to those at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Based on the recent RHIC and LHC experimental results, the $\langle p_T\rangle$ dependence of identified light flavour charged hadrons on $\sqrt{(\frac{dN}{dy})/S_{\perp}}$, relevant scale in gluon saturation picture, is studied from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=7.7 GeV up to 5.02 TeV. This study is extended to the slopes of the $\langle p_T\rangle$ dependence on the particle mass and the $\langleβ_T\rangle$ parameter from Boltzmann-Gibbs Blast Wave (BGBW) fits of the $p_T$ spectra. A systematic decrease of the slope of the $\langle p_T\rangle$ dependence on $\sqrt{(\frac{dN}{dy})/S_{\perp}}$ from BES to the LHC energies is evidenced. While for the RHIC energies, within the experimental errors, the $\langle p_T\rangle$/$\sqrt{(\frac{dN}{dy})/S_{\perp}}$ does not depend on centrality, at the LHC energies a deviation from a linear behaviour is observed towards the most central collisions. The influence of the corona contribution to the observed trends is discussed. The slopes of the $\langle p_T\rangle$ particle mass dependence and the $\langleβ_T\rangle$ parameter from BGBW fits scale well with $\sqrt{(\frac{dN}{dy})/S_{\perp}}$. Similar systematic trends for pp at $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV are in a good agreement with the ones corresponding to Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=2.76 TeV and 5.02 TeV pointing to a system size independent behaviour.

A method to adjust the impedance of the transmission line in a Multi-Strip Multi-Gap Resistive Plate Counter

While in a triggered experiment the matching of the RPC transmission line impedance with the one of the front-end electronics is less critical, for a trigger-less data recording this becomes mandatory. As expected, impedance matching is not straightforward when other requirements in terms of time and position resolutions, efficiency and granularity, have to be fulfilled in the same time. A method and the very first results obtained with a RPC prototype built based on it, presented in this paper, show that the impedance matching, independent of its granularity, can be achieved using an innovative architecture of the RPC.

Core-corona interplay in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=2.76 TeV

A simple approach based on the separation of wounded nucleons in an A-A collision in two categories, those suffering single collisions - corona and the rest - core, estimated within a Glauber Monte-Carlo approach, explains the centrality dependence of the light flavor hadrons production in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=2.76 TeV. The core contribution does not include any dependence of any process on the fireball shape as a function of the impact parameter. Therefore, the ratios of the $p_T$ distributions to the one corresponding to the minimum bias pp collisions at the same energy, each of them normalised to the corresponding charged particle density, the $\langle p_T\rangle$ and transverse energy per unit of rapidity are reproduced less accurate by such an approach. The results show that the corona contribution plays an important role also at LHC energies and it has to be considered in order to evidence the centrality dependence of different observables related to the core properties and dynamics.

Centrality dependence of subthreshold $ϕ$ meson production in Ni+Ni collisions at 1.9A GeV

We analysed the $ϕ$ meson production in central Ni+Ni collisions at the beam kinetic energy of 1.93A GeV with the FOPI spectrometer and found the production probability per event of $[8.6 ~\pm~ 1.6 ~(\text{stat}) \pm 1.5 ~(\text{syst})] \times 10^{-4}$. This new data point allows for the first time to inspect the centrality dependence of the subthreshold $ϕ$ meson production in heavy-ion collisions. The rise of $ϕ$ meson multiplicity per event with mean number of participants can be parameterized by the power function with exponent $α= 1.8 \pm 0.6$. The ratio of $ϕ$ to $\text{K}^-$ production yields seems not to depend within the experimental uncertainties on the collision centrality, and the average of measured values was found to be $0.36 \pm 0.05$.

Predictions for $p+$Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5$ TeV: Comparison with Data

Predictions made in Albacete {\it et al} prior to the LHC $p+$Pb run at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5$ TeV are compared to currently available data. Some predictions shown here have been updated by including the same experimental cuts as the data. Some additional predictions are also presented, especially for quarkonia, that were provided to the experiments before the data were made public but were too late for the original publication are also shown here.

Strange meson production in Al+Al collisions at 1.9A GeV

The production of K$^+$, K$^-$ and $φ$(1020) mesons is studied in Al+Al collisions at a beam energy of 1.9A GeV which is close or below the production threshold in NN reactions. Inverse slopes, anisotropy parameters, and total emission yields of K$^{\pm}$ mesons are obtained. A comparison of the ratio of kinetic energy distributions of K$^-$ and K$^+$ mesons to the HSD transport model calculations suggests that the inclusion of the in-medium modifications of kaon properties is necessary to reproduce the ratio. The inverse slope and total yield of $ϕ$ mesons are deduced. The contribution to K$^-$ production from $ϕ$ meson decays is found to be [17 $\pm$ 3 (stat) $^{+2}_{-7}$ (syst)] %. The results are in line with previous K$^{\pm}$ and $ϕ$ data obtained for different colliding systems at similar incident beam energies.

Time and position resolution of high granularity, high counting rate MRPC for the inner zone of the CBM-TOF wall

Multi-gap RPC prototypes with readout on a multi-strip electrode were developed for the small polar angle region of the CBM-TOF subdetector, the most demanding zone in terms of granularity and counting rate. The prototypes are based on low resistivity ($\sim$10$^{10}$ $Ω$cm) glass electrodes for performing in high counting rate environment. The strip width/pitch size was chosen such to fulfill the impedance matching with the front-end electronics and the granularity requirements of the innermost zone of the CBM-TOF wall. The in-beam tests using secondary particles produced in heavy ion collisions on a Pb target at SIS18 - GSI Darmstadt and SPS - CERN were focused on the performance of the prototype in conditions similar to the ones expected at SIS100/FAIR. An efficiency larger than 98\% and a system time resolution in the order of 70~-~80~ps were obtained in high counting rate and high multiplicity environment.

Influence of $ϕ$ mesons on negative kaons in Ni+Ni collisions at 1.91A GeV beam energy

$ϕ$ and K$^-$ mesons from Ni+Ni collisions at the beam energy of 1.91A GeV have been measured by the FOPI spectrometer, with a trigger selecting central and semi-central events amounting to 51% of the total cross section. The phase space distributions, and the total yield of K$^-$, as well as the kinetic energy distribution and the total yield of $ϕ$ mesons are presented. The $ϕ$\K$^-$ ratio is found to be $0.44 \pm 0.07(\text{stat}) ^{+0.18}_{-0.12} (\text{syst})$, meaning that about 22% of K$^-$ mesons originate from the decays of $ϕ$ mesons, occurring mostly in vacuum. The inverse slopes of direct kaons are up to about 15 MeV larger than the ones extracted within the one-source model, signalling that a considerable share of gap between the slopes of K$^+$ and K$^-$ could be explained by the contribution of $ϕ$ mesons to negative kaons.
