Carbon and Oxygen Galactic Gradients: Observational Values from HII Region Recombination Lines

We present results of deep echelle spectrophotometry of eight Galactic HII regions located at Galactocentric distances between 6.3 and 10.4 kpc. The data have been taken with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) Ultraviolet Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) in the 3100 to 10360 A range. We have derived C++ and O++ abundances from recombination lines for all the objects, as well as O+ abundances from this kind of lines for three of the nebulae. The intensity of recombination lines is almost independent of the assumed electron temperature as well as of the possible presence of spatial temperature variations or fluctuations inside the nebulae. These data allow the determination of the gas-phase C and O abundance gradients of the Galactic disk, of paramount importance for chemical evolution models. This is the first time the C gradient is derived from such a large number of HII regions and for such a wide range of Galactocentric distances. Abundance gradients are found of the form $Δ$log(O/H) = -0.044$\pm$0.010 dex kpc^-1, $Δ$log(C/H) = -0.103$\pm$0.018 dex kpc^-1, and $Δ$log(C/O) = -0.058$\pm$0.018 dex kpc^-1.

A reappraisal of the chemical composition of the Orion nebula based on VLT echelle spectrophotometry

We present VLT UVES echelle spectrophotometry of the Orion nebula in the 3100 to 10400 A range. We have measured the intensity of 555 emission lines, many of them corresponding to permitted lines of different heavy-element ions. This is the largest set of spectral emission lines ever obtained for a Galactic or extragalactic HII region. We have derived He+, C++, O+, O++ and Ne++ abundances from pure recombination lines. This is the first time that O+ and Ne++ abundances are obtained from this kind of lines in the nebula. We have also derived abundances from collisionally excited lines for a large number of ions of different elements. In all cases, ionic abundances obtained from recombination lines are larger than those derived from collisionally excited lines. We have obtained remarkably consistent independent estimations of the temperature fluctuations parameter, t2, from different methods, which are also similar to other estimates from the literature. This result strongly suggests that moderate temperature fluctuations -t2 between 0.02 and 0.03- are present in the Orion nebula. We have compared the chemical composition of the nebula with those of the Sun and other representative objects. The heavy element abundances in the Orion nebula are only slightly higher than the solar ones, a difference that can be explained by the chemical evolution of the solar vicinity.

Pairing gap and in-gap excitations in trapped fermionic superfluids

We consider trapped atomic Fermi gases with Feshbach-resonance enhanced interactions in pseudogap and superfluid temperatures. We calculate the spectrum of RF(or laser)-excitations for transitions that transfer atoms out of the superfluid state. The spectrum displays the pairing gap and also the contribution of unpaired atoms, i.e. in-gap excitations. The results support the conclusion that a superfluid, where pairing is a many-body effect, was observed in recent experiments on RF spectroscopy of the pairing gap.

Signatures of superfluidity for Feshbach-resonant Fermi gases

We consider atomic Fermi gases where Feshbach resonances can be used to continuously tune the system from weak to strong interaction regime, allowing to scan the whole BCS-BEC crossover. We show how a probing field transferring atoms out of the superfluid can be used to detect the onset of the superfluid transition in the high-$T_c$ and BCS regimes. The number of transferred atoms, as a function of the energy given by the probing field, peaks at the gap energy. The shape of the peak is asymmetric due to the single particle excitation gap. Since the excitation gap includes also a pseudogap contribution, the asymmetry alone is not a signature of superfluidity. Incoherent nature of the non-condensed pairs leads to broadening of the peak. The pseudogap and therefore the broadening decay below the critical temperature, causing a drastic increase in the asymmetry. This provides a signature of the transition.

Chemical abundances of the Galactic H II region NGC 3576 derived from VLT echelle spectrophotometry

We present echelle spectrophotometry of the Galactic H II region NGC 3576. The data have been taken with the VLT UVES echelle spectrograph in the 3100 to 10400 angstroms range. We have measured the intensities of 458 emission lines, 344 are permitted lines of H0, He0, C+, N0, N+, N++, O0, O+, Ne+, S++, Si0, Si+, Ar0 and Ar+; some of them are produced by recombination and others mainly by fluorescence. Electron temperatures and densities have been determined using different continuum and line intensity ratios. We have derived He+, C++, O+, O++ and Ne++ ionic abundances from pure recombination lines. We have also derived abundances from collisionally excited lines for a large number of ions of different elements. Remarkably consistent estimations of t2 have been obtained by comparing Balmer and Paschen to [O III] temperatures, and O++ and Ne++ ionic abundances obtained from collisionally excited and recombination lines. The chemical composition of NGC 3576 is compared with those of other Galactic H II regions and with the one from the Sun. A first approach to the gas-phase Galactic radial abundance gradient of C as well as of the C/O ratio has been made.

The ionization equilibrium of iron in H II regions

We study the ionization equilibrium of Fe using photoionization models that incorporate improved values for the ionization and recombination cross-sections and the charge-exchange rates for the Fe ions. The previously available photoionization models predict concentrations of Fe3+ which are a factor of 3-8 higher than the values inferred from emission lines of [Fe III] and [Fe IV]. Our new models reduce these discrepancies to factors of 2-5. We discuss the possible reasons behind the remaining discrepancies and present an updated ionization correction factor for obtaining the Fe abundance from the Fe++ abundance.

Scissors modes of two-component degenerate gases: Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi mixtures

We investigate the scissors modes in binary mixtures of degenerate dilute quantum gases, for both Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi mixtures. For the latter we consider both the superfluid and normal hydrodynamic and collisionless regimes. We analyze the dependence of the frequencies of the scissors modes and their character as a function of the Bose-Fermi coupling and the trap geometry. We show that the scissors mode can reveal a clear trace of the hydrodynamic behavior of the Fermi gas.

Star Formation History and Extinction in the central kpc of M82-like Starbursts

We report on the star formation histories and extinction in the central kpc region of a sample of starburst galaxies that have similar far infrared (FIR), 10 micron and K-band luminosities as those of the archetype starburst M82. Our study is based on new optical spectra and previously published K-band photometric data, both sampling the same area around the nucleus. Model starburst spectra were synthesized as a combination of stellar populations of distinct ages formed over the Hubble time, and were fitted to the observed optical spectra and K-band flux. The model is able to reproduce simultaneously the equivalent widths of emission and absorption lines, the continuum fluxes between 3500-7000 Ang, the K-band and the FIR flux. We require a minimum of 3 populations -- (1) a young population of age < 8 Myr, with its corresponding nebular emission, (2) an intermediate-age population (age < 500 Myr), and (3) an old population that forms part of the underlying disk or/and bulge population. The contribution of the old population to the K-band luminosity depends on the birthrate parameter and remains above 60% in the majority of the sample galaxies. Even in the blue band, the intermediate age and old populations contribute more than 40% of the total flux in all the cases. A relatively high contribution from the old stars to the K-band nuclear flux is also apparent from the strength of the 4000 Ang break and the CaII K line. The extinction of the old population is found to be around half of that of the young population. The contribution to the continuum from the relatively old stars has the effect of diluting the emission equivalent widths below the values expected for young bursts. The mean dilution factors are found to be 5 and 3 for the Halpha and Hbeta lines respectively.

Bloch oscillations in Fermi gases

The possibility of Bloch oscillations for a degenerate and superfluid Fermi gas of atoms in an optical lattice is considered. For a one-component degenerate gas the oscillations are suppressed for high temperatures and band fillings. For a two-component gas the Landau criterion is used for specifying the regime where Bloch oscillations of the superfluid may be observed. We show how the amplitude of Bloch oscillations varies along the BCS-BEC crossover.

Optical Recombination Lines of Heavy-elements in Giant Extragalactic HII Regions

We present high resolution observations of the giant extragalactic H II regions NGC 604, NGC 2363, NGC 5461 and NGC 5471, based on observations taken with the ISIS spectrograph on the William Herschel Telescope. We have detected -by the first time- C II and O II recombination lines in these objects. We find that recombination lines give larger C^{++} and O^{++} abundances than collisionallly excited lines, suggesting that temperature variations can be present in the objects. We detect [Fe IV] lines in NGC 2363 and NGC 5471, the most confident detection of optical lines of this kind in H II regions. Considering the temperature structure we derive their H, He, C, N, O, Ne, S, Ar, and Fe abundances. From the recombination lines of NGC 5461 and NGC 5471 we determine the presence of C/H and O/H gradients in M101. We calculate the Delta Y/Delta O and Delta Y/Delta Z values considering the presence of temperature variations and under the assumption of constant temperature. We obtain a better agreement with models of galactic chemical evolution by considering the presence of temperature variations than by assuming that the temperature is constant in these nebulae.

Josephson effect in superfluid atomic Fermi-gases

We consider an analog of the internal Josephson effect in superfluid atomic Fermi-gases. Four different hyperfine states of the atoms are assumed to be trapped and to form two superfluids via the BCS-type pairing. Weshow that Josephson oscillations can be realized by coupling the superfluids with two laser fields. Choosing the laser detunings in a suitable way leads to an asymmetric below-gap tunneling effect for which there exists no analogue in the context of solid-state superconductivity.

Iron abundance in HII regions

Optical CCD spectra are used to determine the Fe abundances at several positions inside seven bright Galactic HII regions. The observed [FeIII] line ratios are compared with the predictions of different sets of collision strengths and transition probabilities for this ion to select the atomic data providing the best fit to the observations. The values found for the Fe++ and Fe+ abundances, along with ionization correction factors for the contribution of Fe3+, obtained from available grids of photoionized models, imply that the Fe/O ratio in the ionized gas is between 2% and 30% of solar. The Fe abundances derived for each area are correlated both with the degree of ionization and the colour excess. A possible explanation is suggested, namely the presence of a population of small grains, probably originating from the fragmentation of larger grains. These small grains would release Fe atoms into the gas after the absorption of energetic photons; the small grains surviving this destruction process would be swept out of the ionized region by the action of radiation pressure or stellar winds. An indication of a further and more efficient destruction agent is given by the high Fe abundance derived for a position sampling the optical jet H399 in M20, where dust destruction due to shock waves has presumably taken place.

Laser-induced collective excitations in a two-component Fermi gas

We consider the linear density response of a two-component (superfluid) Fermi gas of atoms when the perturbation is caused by laser light. We show that various types of laser excitation schemes can be transformed into linear density perturbations, however, a Bragg spectroscopy scheme is needed for transferring energy and momentum into a collective mode. This makes other types of laser probing schemes insensitive for collective excitations and therefore well suited for the detection of the superfluid order parameter. We show that for the special case when laser light is coupled between the two components of the Fermi gas, density response is always absent in a homogeneous system.

Evidence for binarity in the bipolar planetary nebulae A79, He2-428 and M1-91

We present low and high resolution long-slit spectra of three bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe) with bright central cores: A79, He2-428 and M1-91. He2-428 and M1-91 have high density (from 10^3.3 to 10^6.5 cm^-3) unresolved nebular cores that indicate that strong mass loss/exchange phenomena are occurring close to their central stars. An F0 star is found at the centre of symmetry of A79; its reddening and distance are consistent with the association of the star with the nebula. The spectrum of the core of He2-428 shows indications of the presence of a hot star with red excess emission, probably arising in a late-type companion. A79 is one of the richest PNe in N and He, the abundances of M1-91 are at the lower end of the range spanned by bipolar PNe, and He2-428 shows very low abundances, similar to those measured for halo PNe. The extended nebulae of A79 and He2-428 have inclined equatorial rings expanding at a velocity of approx. 15 km/s, with kinematical ages 10^4 yr. The association of these aged, extended nebulae with a dense nebular core (He2-428) or a relatively late type star (A79) is interpreted as evidence for the binarity of their nuclei.

Cooper-pair coherence in a superfluid Fermi-gas of atoms

We study the coherence properties of a trapped two-component gas of fermionic atoms below the BCS critical temperature. We propose an optical method to investigate the Cooper-pair coherence across different regions of the superfluid. Near-resonant laser light is used to induce transitions between the two coupled hyperfine states. The beam is split so that it probes two spatially separate regions of the gas. Absorption of the light in this interferometric scheme depends on the Cooper-pair coherence between the two regions.

Vortices in Trapped Superfluid Fermi-gases

We consider a superfluid of trapped fermionic atoms and study the single vortex solution in the Ginzburg-Landau regime. We define simple analytical estimates for the main characteristics of the system, such as the vortex core size, temperature regimes for the existence of a vortex, and the effects of rotation and interactions with normal fermions. The parameter dependence of the vortex core size (healing length) is found to be essentially different from that of the healing length in metallic superconductors or in trapped atomic BEC in the Thomas-Fermi limit. This is an indication of the importance of the confining geometry for the properties of fermionic superfluids.

Laser probing of Cooper-paired trapped atoms

We consider a gas of trapped Cooper-paired fermionic atoms which are manipulated by laser light. The laser induces a transition from an internal state with large negative scattering length (superfluid) to one with weaker interactions (normal gas). We show that the process can be used to detect the presence of the superconducting order parameter. Also, we propose a direct way of measuring the size of the gap in the trap. The efficiency and feasibility of this probing method is investigated in detail in different physical situations.

Tailoring of vibrational state populations with light-induced potentials in molecules

We propose a method for achieving highly efficient transfer between the vibrational states in a diatomic molecule. The process is mediated by strong laser pulses and can be understood in terms of light-induced potentials. In addition to describing a specific molecular system, our results show how, in general, one can manipulate the populations of the different quantum states in double well systems.
