Top quark physics at muon and other future colliders

The top quark will be extensively studied at future muon colliders. The threshold cross section can be measured precisely, and the small beam energy spread is especially effective at making the measurement useful. We report on all the activities of the top quark working group, including talks on top quark physics at other future colliders.

Precision measurements of threshold chargino production

We analyze the prospects at a muon collider for measuring chargino masses in the $μ^+μ^-\to \tildeχ^+\tildeχ^-$ processes in the threshold region. We find that a measurement of the lightest chargino mass to better than 200 MeV is possible with 100~fb$^{-1}$ luminosity. The muon sneutrino mass can also be simultaneously measured to a few GeV.

Threshold cross section measurements

Accurate measurements of particles masses, couplings and widths are possible by measuring production cross sections near threshold. We discuss the prospects for performing such measurements at a high luminosity muon collider.

Chargino mass determination at a muon collider

We analyze the prospects at a muon collider for measuring chargino masses in the $μ^+μ^-\to \tildeχ^+\tildeχ^-$ process in the threshold region. We find that for the lighter chargino of a mass $100-200$ GeV, a measurement better than $50-300$ MeV should be possible with 50 fb$^{-1}$ integrated luminosity. The accuracy obtained here is better than with other techniques or at other facilities. The muon sneutrino mass, which enters through the $\tildeν_μ$ exchange diagram, can also be simultaneously measured to a few GeV if it is not too heavy.

Precision W-Boson and Higgs Boson Mass Determinations at Muon Colliders

Precise determinations of the masses of the $W$ boson and of the top quark could stringently test the radiative structure of the Standard Model (SM) or provide evidence for new physics. We analyze the excellent prospects at a muon collider for measuring $M_W$ and $m_t$ in the $W^+W^-$ and $ZH$ threshold regions. With an integrated luminosity of 10 (100) fb$^{-1}$, the W-boson mass could be measured to a precision of 20 (6) MeV, provided that theoretical and experimental systematics are understood. A measurement of $ΔM_W=6$ MeV would constrain the mass of a $\sim 100$ GeV Higgs to about $\pm 10$ GeV. We demonstrate that a measurement at future colliders of the Bjorken process. With an integrated luminosity of $100\fbi$ it is possible to measure the Standard Model Higgs mass to within 45\mev at a $μ^+μ^-$ collider for $\mh=100\gev$.

The Top-Antitop Threshold at Muon Colliders

Muon colliders are expected to naturally have a small spread in beam energy making them an ideal place to study the excitation curve. We present the parameter determinations that are possible from measuring the total cross section near threshold at a $μ^+μ^-$ collider.

The Physics Capabilities of mu^+ mu^- Colliders

We summarize the potential of muon colliders to probe fundamental physics. $W^+W^-$, \bar tt, and $Zh$ threshold measurements could determine masses to precisions $ΔM_W = 6$ MeV, $Δm_t = 70$ MeV, and $Δm_h = 45$ MeV, to test electroweak radiative corrections. With $s$-channel Higgs production, unique to a muon collider, the Higgs mass could be pinpointed ($Δm_h < 1$ MeV) and its width measured. The other Higgs bosons of supersymmetry can be produced and studied by three methods. If instead the $WW$ sector turns out to be strongly interacting, a 4 TeV muon collider is ideally suited to its study.

Precision W-boson and top-quark mass determinations at a muon collider

Precise determinations of the masses of the $W$ boson and of the top quark could stringently test the radiative structure of the Standard Model (SM) or provide evidence for new physics. We analyze the excellent prospects at a muon collider for measuring $M_W$ and $m_t$ in the $W^+W^-$ and $t\bar t$ threshold regions. With an integrated luminosity of 10 (100) fb$^{-1}$, the $W$-boson mass could be measured to a precision of 20 (6) MeV, and the top-quark mass to a precision of 200 (70) MeV, provided that theoretical and experimental systematics are understood. A measurement of $Δm_t=200$ MeV for fixed $M_W$ would constrain a 100 GeV SM Higgs mass within about $\pm 2$ GeV, while $ΔM_W=6$ MeV for fixed $m_t$ would constrain $m_h$ to about $\pm 10$ GeV.

Precision Higgs boson mass determination at lepton colliders

We demonstrate that a measurement of the Bjorken process $e^+e^-, μ^+μ^-\to ZH$ in the threshold region can yield a precise determination of the Higgs boson mass. With an integrated luminosity of $100 fb^{-1}$, it is possible to measure the Higgs mass to within 60 MeV (100 MeV) for m_H=100 GeV (150 GeV).

Discovering New Particles at Colliders

We summarize the activities of the New Particles Subgroup at the 1996 Snowmass Workshop. We present the expectations for discovery or exclusion of leptoquarks at hadron and lepton colliders in the pair production and single production modes. The indirect detection of a scalar lepton quark at polarized $e^+e^-$ and $μ^+μ^-$ colliders is discussed. The discovery prospects for particles with two units of lepton number is discussed. We summarize the analysis of the single production of neutral heavy leptons at lepton colliders.

Indirect Leptoquark Searches at Polarized Lepton Colliders

We examine the utility of employing polarized lepton (electron and muon) beams to perform indirect searches for scalar leptoquarks. We find that polarization can extend the reach in excluding leptoquark masses for both $e^+e^-$ and $μ^+μ^-$ machines. Polarization can also provide a diagnostic tool for determining leptoquark couplings.

Studying a Strongly Interacting Electroweak Sector via Longitudinal Gauge Boson Scattering at a Muon Collider

We discuss the excellent prospects for a detailed study of a strongly interacting electroweak sector at a muon collider with c.m. energy $\rts\sim 4\tev$. For expected luminosity of $L=200-1000\fbi$ per year, $\mup\mum$ and $\mup\mup$ (or $\mum\mum$) collisions can be used to study longitudinal $\wp\wm$ and $\wp\wp$ (or $\wm\wm$) scattering with considerable precision. In particular, detailed measurements of the distribution in the $VV$ pair masses ($V=\wpm,Z$) will be possible. The shape and magnitude of these distributions will provide a powerful tool for determining the nature of strong gauge boson interactions. Event rates will be large enough that projection techniques can be used to directly isolate final states with different polarizations of the $V$'s and verify that the strong interaction cross section excess is mainly in the longitudinal-longitudinal mode.

Particle Physics Opportunities at $μ^+μ^-$ Colliders

We discuss the capabilities of future muon colliders to resolve important particle physics questions. A collider with c.m. energy $\sqrt s = 100$ to 500~GeV offers the unique opportunity to produce Higgs bosons in the $s$-channel and thereby measure the Higgs masses, total widths and several partial widths to high precision. At this same machine, $t\bar t$ and $W^+W^-$ threshold studies would yield superior precision in the determination of $m_t$ and $m_W$. A multi-TeV $μ^+μ^-$ collider would open up the realm of physics above the 1 TeV scale, allowing, for example, copious production of supersymmetric particles up to the highest anticipated masses or a detailed study of the strongly-interacting scenario of electroweak symmetry breaking.

Higgs Boson Physics in the $s$-channel at $μ^+μ^-$ Colliders

Techniques and strategies for discovering and measuring the properties of Higgs bosons via $s$-channel production at a $μ^+μ^-$ collider, and the associated requirements for the machine and detector, are discussed in detail. The unique feature of $s$-channel production is that, with good energy resolution, the mass, total width and partial widths of a Higgs boson can be directly measured with remarkable accuracy in most cases. For the expected machine parameters and luminosity the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson $\hsm$, with mass $\lsim 2\mw$, the light $\hl$ of the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), and the heavier MSSM Higgs bosons (the CP-odd $\ha$ and the CP-even $\hh$) can all be studied in the $s$-channel, with the heavier states accessible up to the maximal $\sqrt s$ over a large fraction of the MSSM parameter space. In addition, it may be possible to discover the $\ha$ and $\hh$ by running the collider at full energy and observing excess events in the bremsstrahlung tail at lower energy. The integrated luminosity, beam resolution and machine/detector features required to distinguish between the $\hsm$ and $\hl$ are delineated.

Thresholds in $α_s$ evolution and the $p_T$ dependence of jets

We point out that high-mass thresholds in the evolution of the strong-interaction coupling parameter $α_s$, due to gluinos, squarks and possible new heavy quarks, could introduce appreciable corrections to the transverse momentum dependence of jet production at the Tevatron. If the new thresholds were near scale $μ= 200$~GeV, then within the limits of asymptotic freedom they could introduce up to $11\%$ increase in $α_s(μ)$ (and hence $23\%$ increase in jet production) at scale $μ=500$ GeV, compared to Standard Model extrapolations.

Renormalization group evolution of R-parity-violating Yukawa couplings

We study the evolution of $R$-parity-violating (RPV) couplings in the minimum supersymmetric standard model, between the electroweak and grand unification scales, assuming a family hierarchy for these coupling strengths. Particular attention is given to solutions where both the $R$-conserving and $R$-violating top quark Yukawa couplings simultaneously approach infrared fixed points; these we analyse both algebraically and with numerical solutions of the evolution equations at one-loop level. We identify constraints on these couplings at the GUT scale, arising from lower limits on the top quark mass. We show that fixed points offer a new source of bounds on RPV couplings at the electroweak scale. We derive evolution equations for the CKM matrix, and show that RPV couplings affect the scaling of the unitarity triangle. The fixed-point behaviour is compatible with all present experimental constraints. However, fixed-point values of RPV top-quark couplings would require the corresponding sleptons or squarks to have mass $\agt m_t$ to suppress strong new top decays to sparticles.

The ttbar threshold at a muon collider

The beam energy spread is a major issue in future attempts to study the $t\overline{t}$ threshold at $e^+e^-$ colliders. Muon colliders are expected to naturally have narrow band beams making them an ideal place to study the excitation curve. We present the parameter determinations that are possible from measuring the total cross section near threshold at a $μ^+μ^-$ collider.

Physics Goals of a $μ^+μ^-$ Collider

This working group report focuses on the physics potential of $μ^+μ^-$ colliders beyond what can be accomplished at linear $e^+e^-$ colliders and the LHC. Particularly interesting possibilities include (i)~$s$-channel resonance production to discover and study heavy Higgs bosons with $ZZ$ and $WW$ couplings that are suppressed or absent at tree-level (such as the $H$ and $A$ Higgs bosons of supersymmetric models), (ii)~study of the strongly interacting electroweak sector, where higher energies give larger signals, and (iii)~measurements of the masses and properties of heavy supersymmetric particles.
