Quark Singlets: Implications and Constraints

Quarks whose left- and right-handed chiral components are both singlets with respect to the SU(2) weak-isospin gauge group, offer interesting physics possibilities beyond the Standard Model (SM) already studied in many contexts. We here address some further aspects. We first collect and update the constraints from present data on their masses and mixings with conventional quarks. We discuss possible effects on $b\to sγ$ and $Z\to b\bar b$ decays and give fresh illustrations of CP asymmetries in $B^0$ decays differing dramatically from SM expectations. We analyse singlet effects in grand unification scenarios: $d$-type singlets are most economically introduced in ${\bf 5+5^*}$ multiplets of $SU(5)$, with up to three generations, preserving gauge coupling unification with perturbative values up to the GUT scale; $u$-type singlets can arise in ${\bf 10+10^*}$ multiplets of $SU(5)$ with at most one light generation. With extra matter multiplets the gauge couplings are bigger; we give the two-loop evolution equations including exotic multiplets and a possible extra $U(1)$ symmetry. Two-loop effects can become important, threatening unification (modulo threshold effects), perturbativity and asymptotic freedom of $α_3$. In the Yukawa sector, top-quark fixed-point behaviour is preserved and singlet-quark couplings have infrared fixed points too, but unification of $b$ and $τ$ couplings is not possible in a three-generation $E_6$ model.

Constraints on SUSY-GUT unification from $b\to sγ$ decay

The top-quark Yukawa infrared fixed-point solution of the renormalization group equations, with minimal supersymmetry and GUT unification, defines a low-energy spectrum of supersymmetric particle masses in terms of a few GUT-scale parameters assuming universal boundary conditions. We give predictions in this model for the inclusive $b\to sγ$ branching fraction and investigate the impact of non-universal scalar mass boundary conditions. We find our results do not depend significantly on the value of the GUT-scale trilinear coupling $A^G$. The small $\tan β$ region favors predictions for the inclusive $b\to sγ$ branching fraction close to that of the Standard Model value. Nevertheless forthcoming experimental results can eliminate some regions of the GUT parameter space.

Strong WW Scattering at Photon Linear Colliders

We investigate the possibility of observing strong interactions of longitudinally polarized weak vector bosons in the process $γγ\to ZZ$ at a photon linear collider. We make use of polarization of the photon beams and cuts on the decay products of the $Z$ bosons to enhance the signal relative to the background of transversely polarized $ZZ$ pairs. We find that the background overwhelms the signal unless there are strong resonant effects, as for instance from a technicolor analogue of the hadronic $f_2(1270)$ meson.

Multilepton SUSY signals from R-parity violation at the Tevatron

The expected trilepton signals from $p \bar p \to χ^\pm_1χ^0_2 \to (χ^0_1\ell^\pmν) (χ^0_1\ell'^+\ell'^-) $ will be converted into hadronically quiet multilepton signals, if the two final $χ^0_1$ have leptonic $R$-parity-violating (RPV) decays $χ^0_1 \to \ell \ell' ν$. We make illustrative calculations of the acceptance for these spectacular RPV signals, and point out that distinctive multilepton signals are possible even when the $R$-conserving trilepton signals are blocked by the ``spoiler mode" $χ^0_2 \to h^0 χ^0_1$. Other channels such as $p\bar p\to χ_1^\pm χ_2^0 \to (χ_1^0\ell^\pmν) (χ_1^0νν)$, $p\bar p\to χ_1^\pm χ_1^0 \to (χ_1^0\ellν)χ_1^0$ and $p\bar p\toχ_1^+χ_1^-\to(χ_1^0\ell^+ν)(χ_1^0\ell'^-ν)$ can also give quiet multileptons from RPV. We investigate these signals in the context of supersymmetric models with radiative electroweak symmetry breaking, using examples in the low-$\tanβ$ $λ_t$ fixed-point region.

Supergravity Solutions in the Low-$\tanβ$ $ λ_t$ Fixed Point Region

There has been much discussion in the literature about applying the radiative electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) requirement to GUT models with supergravity. We motivate and discuss the application of the EWSB requirement to the low $\tanβ$ fixed-point region and describe the solutions we find.

Implications of Supersymmetric Grand Unification

Unification of the interactions of the Standard Model is possible in its simplest supersymmetric extension. The implications of the $λ_t$ fixed-point solution on the top mass and on Higgs phenomenology is discussed. Expected correlations between the masses of various supersymmetric particles are detailed.

The Supersymmetric Particle Spectrum

We examine the spectrum of supersymmetric particles predicted by grand unified theoretical (GUT) models where the electroweak symmetry breaking is accomplished radiatively. We evolve the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters according to the renormalization group equations (RGE). The minimization of the Higgs potential is conveniently described by means of tadpole diagrams. We present complete one-loop expressions for these minimization conditions, including contributions from the matter and the gauge sectors. We concentrate on the low $\tan β$ fixed point region (that provides a natural explanation of a large top quark mass) for which we find solutions to the RGE satisfying both experimental bounds and fine-tuning criteria. We also find that the constraint from the consideration of the lightest supersymmetric particle as the dark matter of the universe is accommodated in much of parameter space where the lightest neutralino is predominantly gaugino. The supersymmetric mass spectrum displays correlations that are model-independent over much of the GUT parameter space.

RGE Results for Supersymmetric GUTS

The scaling behavior of gauge couplings and fermion Yukawa couplings in the minimal supersymmetric model is discussed. The relevance of the top quark Yukawa coupling fixed point in establishing the top quark mass is described. The evolution of mixing angles is presented.

Supersymmetry with Grand Unification

Supersymmetry (SUSY) has many well known attractions, especially in the context of Grand Unified Theories (GUTs). SUSY stabilizes scalar mass corrections (the hierarchy problem), greatly reduces the number of free parameters, facilitates gauge coupling unification, and provides a plausible candidate for cosmological dark matter. In this conference report we survey some recent examples of progress in SUSY-GUT applications.

The $W$ Boson Loop Background to H -> ZZ at Photon-photon Colliders

We have performed a complete one-loop calculation of $γγ\rightarrow ZZ$ in the Standard Model, including both gauge bosons and fermions in the loop. We confirm the large irreducible continuum background from the $W$-boson loop found by Jikia. We have included the photon-photon luminosity, and find that the continuum background of transverse $Z$ boson pairs prohibits finding a heavy Higgs with mass $\gtap 350$ GeV in this decay mode.

General Issues in the Evolution of Fermion Masses and Mixings

General issues in the renormalization group evolution of fermion masses and mixings is discussed. An effective fixed point in the top quark Yukawa coupling can strongly constrain its value at the electroweak scale. Predictions following from Yukawa coupling unification are affected by threshold corrections at the grand unified scale. The Landau pole translates into an upper limit on the strong gauge coupling $α_3(M_Z)$. Given the hierarchy in the fermion sector, the evolution of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix can be expressed in terms of a single scaling parameter $S$. Using this scaling factor and analogous scaling factors for the quark and lepton masses, we outline a systematic strategy that readily yields electroweak predictions for any GUT scale texture.}

Phenomenological Implications of the $m_t$ RGE Fixed Point for SUSY Higgs Boson Searches

In minimal SUSY-GUT models with $M_{SUSY}\ltap 1$ TeV, the renormalization group equations have a solution dominated by the infrared fixed point of the top Yukawa coupling. This fixed point predicts $m_t=(200\; {\rm GeV})\sin β$; combined with the LEP results it excludes $m_t\ltap 130$ GeV. For $m_t$ in the range 130-160 GeV, we discuss the sensitivity of the $m_t$ fixed point result to GUT threshold corrections and point out the implications for Higgs boson searches. The lightest scalar $h$ has mass 60-85 GeV and will be detectable at LEPII. At SSC/LHC, each of the five scalars $h$, $H$, $A$, $H^{\pm }$ may be detectable, but not all of them together; in one parameter region none will be detectable.

Implications of $b\rightarrow sγ$ decay measurements in testing the MSSM Higgs sector

The observation that the $b \rightarrow sγ$ decay rate is close to the Standard Model value implies a large mass for the charged-Higgs boson in the Minimum Supersymmetric Standard Model, that nearly closes the $t \rightarrow b H^+$ decay channel. For $m_t = 150$ GeV, the parameter region $m_A \ltap 130$ GeV is excluded; this largely pre-empts LEP II searches and also partially excludes a region that would be inaccessible to MSSM Higgs boson searches both at LEP II and at SSC/LHC.

Universal Evolution of CKM Matrix Elements

We derive the two-loop evolution equations for the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. We show that to leading order in the mass and CKM hierarchies the scaling of the mixings $|V_{ub}|^2$, $|V_{cb}|^2$, $|V_{td}|^2$, $|V_{ts}|^2$ and of the rephase-invariant CP-violating parameter $J$ is universal to all orders in perturbation theory. In leading order the other CKM elements do not scale. Imposing the constraint $λ_b=λ_τ$ at the GUT scale determines the CKM scaling factor to be $\simeq 0.58$ in the MSSM.

Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories: Two Loop Evolution of Gauge and Yukawa Couplings

We make a numerical study of gauge and Yukawa unification in supersymmetric grand unified models and examine the quantitative implications of fermion mass ansätze at the grand unified scale. Integrating the renormalization group equations with $α_1(M_Z)$ and $α_2(M_Z)$ as inputs, we find $α_3(M_Z)\simeq 0.111 (0.122)$ for $M_{SUSY}^{}=m_t$ and $α_3(M_Z)\simeq 0.106 (0.116)$ for $M_{SUSY}^{}=1$ TeV at one-loop (two-loop) order. Including $b$ and $τ$ Yukawa couplings in the evolution, we find an upper limit $m_t\ltap 200$ GeV from Yukawa unification. For given $m_t\ltap 175$ GeV, there are two solutions for $β$, one with $\tan β> m_t/m_b$, and one with $\sin β\simeq 0.78(m_t/150\;{\rm GeV})$. Taking a popular ansatz for the mass matrices at the unified scale, we obtain a lower limit on the top quark mass of $m_t\gtap 150 (115)$ GeV for $α_3(M_Z)=0.11 (0.12)$ and an upper limit on the supersymmetry parameter $\tan β\ltap 50$ if $α_3(M_Z)=0.11$. The evolution of the quark mixing matrix elements is also evaluated.

Test of an Equivalence Theorem at One-Loop

We show that the equivalence theorem approximating one-loop gauge sector diagrams by including only Goldstone bosons in the loop gives a remarkably poor approximation to the amplitude for the decay $H\rightarrow γγ$ and for the process $γγ\rightarrow HH$. At one loop, large logarithms can arise that evade power counting arguments.
