An electrical probe for mechanical vibrations in suspended carbon nanotubes

The transport properties of a suspended carbon nanotube probed by means of a STM tip are investigated. A microscopic theory of the coupling between electrons and mechanical vibrations is developed. It predicts a position-dependent coupling constant, sizeable only in the region where the vibron is located. This fact has profound consequences on the transport properties, which allow to extract information on the location and size of the vibrating portions of the nanotube.

Anomalous charge tunneling in the fractional quantum Hall edge states at filling factor ν= 5/2

We explain effective charge anomalies recently observed for fractional quantum Hall edge states at $ν=5/2$ [M. Dolev, Y. Gross, Y. C. Chung, M. Heiblum, V. Umansky, and D. Mahalu, Phys.Rev. B. \textbf{81}, 161303(R) (2010)]. The experimental data of differential conductance and excess noise are fitted, using the anti-Pfaffian model, by properly take into account renormalizations of the Luttinger parameters induced by the coupling of the system with an intrinsic $1/f$ noise. We demonstrate that a peculiar agglomerate excitation with charge $e/2$, double of the expected $e/4$ charge, dominates the transport properties at low energies.

Coherent properties of nano-electromechanical systems

We study the properties of a nano-electromechanical system in the coherent regime, where the electronic and vibrational time scales are of the same order. Employing a master equation approach, we obtain the stationary reduced density matrix retaining the coherences between vibrational states. Depending on the system parameters, two regimes are identified, characterized by either ($i$) an {\em effective} thermal state with a temperature {\em lower} than that of the environment or ($ii$) strong coherent effects. A marked cooling of the vibrational degree of freedom is observed with a suppression of the vibron Fano factor down to sub-Poissonian values and a reduction of the position and momentum quadratures.

Transport properties of quantum dots in the Wigner molecule regime

The transport properties of quantum dots with up to N=7 electrons ranging from the weak to the strong interacting regime are investigated via the projected Hartree-Fock technique. As interactions increase radial order develops in the dot, with the formation of ring and centered-ring structures. Subsequently, angular correlations appear, signalling the formation of a Wigner molecule state. We show striking signatures of the emergence of Wigner molecules, detected in transport. In the linear regime, conductance is exponentially suppressed as the interaction strength grows. A further suppression is observed when centered-ring structures develop, or peculiar spin textures appear. In the nonlinear regime, the formation of molecular states may even lead to a conductance enhancement.

Phonon distributions of a single bath mode coupled to a quantum dot

The properties of an unconventional, single mode phonon bath coupled to a quantum dot, are investigated within the rotating wave approximation. The electron current through the dot induces an out of equilibrium bath, with a phonon distribution qualitatively different from the thermal one. In selected transport regimes, such a distribution is characterized by a peculiar selective population of few phonon modes and can exhibit a sub-Poissonian behavior. It is shown that such a sub-Poissonian behavior is favored by a double occupancy of the dot. The crossover from a unequilibrated to a conventional thermal bath is explored, and the limitations of the rotating wave approximation are discussed.

Structured environments in solid state systems: crossover from Gaussian to non-Gaussian behavior

The variety of noise sources typical of the solid state represents the main limitation toward the realization of controllable and reliable quantum nanocircuits, as those allowing quantum computation. Such ``structured environments'' are characterized by a non-monotonous noise spectrum sometimes showing resonances at selected frequencies. Here we focus on a prototype structured environment model: a two-state impurity linearly coupled to a dissipative harmonic bath. We identify the time scale separating Gaussian and non-Gaussian dynamical regimes of the Spin-Boson impurity. By using a path-integral approach we show that a qubit interacting with such a structured bath may probe the variety of environmental dynamical regimes.

Characterization of coherent impurity effects in solid state qubits

We propose a characterisation of the effects of bistable coherent impurities in solid state qubits. We introduce an effective impurity description in terms of a tunable spin-boson environment and solve the dynamics for the qubit coherences. The dominant rate characterizing the asymptotic time limit is identified and signatures of non-Gaussian behavior of the quantum impurity at intermediate times are pointed out. An alternative perspective considering the qubit as a measurement device for the spin-boson impurity is proposed.

Spin projected unrestricted Hartree-Fock ground states for harmonic quantum dots

We report results for the ground state energies and wave functions obtained by projecting spatially unrestricted Hartree Fock states to eigenstates of the total spin and the angular momentum for harmonic quantum dots with $N\leq 12$ interacting electrons including a magnetic field states with the correct spatial and spin symmetries have lower energies than those obtained by the unrestricted method. The chemical potential as a function of a perpendicular magnetic field is obtained. Signature of an intrinsic spin blockade effect is found.

Spin and rotational symmetries in unrestricted Hartree Fock states of quantum dots

Ground state energies are obtained using the unrestricted Hartree Fock method for up to four interacting electrons parabolically confined in a quantum dot subject to a magnetic field. Restoring spin and rotational symmetries we recover Hund first rule. With increasing magnetic field, crossovers between ground states with different quantum numbers are found for fixed electron number that are not reproduced by the unrestricted Hartree Fock approximation. These are consistent with the ones obtained with more refined techniques. We confirm the presence of a spin blockade due to a spin mismatch in the ground states of three and four electrons.

Anomalous suppression of the shot noise in a nanoelectromechanical system

In this paper we report a relaxation-induced suppression of the noise for a single level quantum dot coupled to an oscillator with incoherent dynamics in the sequential tunneling regime. It is shown that relaxation induces qualitative changes in the transport properties of the dot, depending on the strength of the electron-phonon coupling and on the applied voltage. In particular, critical thresholds in voltage and relaxation are found such that a suppression below 1/2 of the Fano factor is possible. Additionally, the current is either enhanced or suppressed by increasing relaxation, depending on bias being greater or smaller than the above threshold. These results exist for any strength of the electron-phonon coupling and are confirmed by a four states toy model.

Signatures of fractional Hall quasiparticles in moments of current through an antidot

The statistics of tunneling current in a fractional quantum Hall sample with an antidot is studied in the chiral Luttinger liquid picture of edge states. A comparison between Fano factor and skewness is proposed in order to clearly distinguish the charge of the carriers in both the thermal and the shot limit. In addition, we address effects on current moments of non-universal exponents in single-quasiparticle propagators. Positive correlations, result of propagators behaviour, are obtained in the shot noise limit of the Fano factor, and possible experimental consequences are outlined.

Negative differential conductance in quantum dots in theory and experiment

Experimental results for sequential transport through a lateral quantum dot in the regime of spin blockade induced by spin dependent tunneling are compared with theoretical results obtained by solving a master equation for independent electrons. Orbital and spin effects in electron tunneling in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field are identified and discussed in terms of the Fock-Darwin spectrum with spin. In the nonlinear regime, a regular pattern of negative differential conductances is observed. Electrical asymmetries in tunnel rates and capacitances must be introduced in order to account for the experimental findings. Fast relaxation of the excited states in the quantum dot have to be assumed, in order to explain the absence of certain structures in the transport spectra.

Modulation of dephasing due to a spin-boson environment

We study the reduced dynamics of a spin (qubit) coupled to a spin-boson environment in the case of pure dephasing. We derive formal exact expressions which can be cast in terms of exact integro-differential master equations. We present results for a SB environment with ohmic dissipation at finite temperatures. For the special value of the ohmic damping strength K=1/2 the reduced dynamics is found in analytic form. For K<<1 we discuss the possibility of modulating the effect of the SB environment on the qubit. In particular we study the effect of the crossover to a slow environment dynamics, which may be triggered by changing both the temperature and the system-environment coupling.

Shot noise in charge and magnetization currents of a quantum ring

The shot noise in a quantum ring, connected to leads, is studied in the presence of electron interactions in the sequential tunneling regime. Two qualitatively different noise correlations with distinctly different behaviors are identified and studied in a large range of parameters. Noise in the total current is due to the discreteness of the electron charge and can become super-Poissonian as result of electron interaction. The noise in the magnetization current is comparatively insensitive to the interaction but can be greatly enhanced if population inversion of the angular states is assumed. The characteristic time scales are studied by a Monte-Carlo simulation.

Spin effects in transport through non-Fermi liquid quantum dots

The current-voltage characteristic of a one dimensional quantum dot connected via tunnel barriers to interacting leads is calculated in the region of sequential tunneling. The spin of the electrons is taken into account. Non-Fermi liquid correlations implying spin-charge separation are assumed to be present in the dot and in the leads. It is found that the energetic distance of the peaks in the linear conductance shows a spin-induced parity effect at zero temperature T. The temperature dependence of the positions of the peaks depends on the non-Fermi liquid nature of the system. For non-symmetric tunnel barriers negative differential conductances are predicted, which are related to the participation in the transport of collective states in the quantum dot with larger spins. Without spin-charge separation the negative differential conductances do not occur. Taking into account spin relaxation destroys the spin-induced conductance features. The possibility of observing in experiment the predicted effects are briefly discussed.

Negative differential conductance induced by spin-charge separation

Spin-charge states of correlated electrons in a one-dimensional quantum dot attached to interacting leads are studied in the non-linear transport regime. With non-symmetric tunnel barriers, regions of negative differential conductance induced by spin-charge separation are found. They are due to a correlation-induced trapping of higher-spin states without magnetic field, and associated with a strong increase in the fluctuations of the electron spin.

Shot noise of a quantum dot with non-Fermi liquid correlations

The shot noise of a one-dimensional wire interrupted by two barriers shows interesting features related to the interplay between Coulomb blockade effects, Luttinger correlations and discrete excitations. At small bias the Fano factor reaches the lowest attainable value, 1/2, irrespective of the ratio of the two junction resistances. At larger voltages this asymmetry is power-law renormalized by the interaction strength. We discuss how the measurement of current and these features of the noise allow to extract the Luttinger liquid parameter.

Composite Fermions with Spin at $ν=1/2$

The model of Composite Fermions for describing interacting electrons in two dimensions in the presence of a magnetic field is described. In this model, charged Fermions are combined with an even number of magnetic flux quanta in such a way that the external magnetic field is compensated on the average for half filling of Landau levels and the interaction is incorporated into an effective mass of the new composite particles. The fluctuations of the Chern-Simons gauge field, which describes formally the flux attachment, induce new interactions between the Composite Fermions. The effective interaction is investigated with particular emphasis on the role of the electron spin at filling factor $ν=1/2$. For a system with equal numbers of spin-up and spin-down electrons it is found that the dominant effective interaction is attractive in the spin-singlet channel. This can induce a ground state consisting of Cooper pairs of Composite Fermions that is separated from the excited states by a gap. The results are used to understand recent spin polarization measurements done in the region of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect at different constant filling factors.
