Spin-pairing instabilities at the coincidence of two Landau levels

The effect of interactions near the coincidence of two Landau levels with opposite spins at filling factor 1/2 is investigated. By mapping to Composite Fermions it is shown that the fluctuations of the gauge field induces an effective attractive Fermion interaction. This can lead to a spin-singlet ground state that is separated from the excited states by a gap. The magnitude of the gap is evaluated. The results are consistent with the recently observed half-polarized states in the FQHE at a fixed filling factor. It is suggested that similar anomalies exist for other spin configurations in degenerate spin-up and spin-down Landau levels. An experiment for testing the spin-singlet state is proposed.

Theory of measuring the "Luttinger-g" of a one-dimensional quantum dot

We study electron transport through a quantum dot in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid with an inhomogeneity induced either by a non-uniform electron interaction or by the presence of tunnel resistances of contacts. The non-analytic temperature behavior of the conductance peaks show crossovers determined by the different energy scales associated with the dot and the inhomogeneity despite the Coulomb blockade remains intact. This suggests an explanation of recent findings in semiconductor quantum wires and carbon nanotubes.

Non-universal power laws in transport properties of one-dimensional quantum dots

We investigate discrepancies between recent experimental results on transport through one-dimensional quantum dots and universal power laws predicted by an idealized Luttinger Liquid description. The temperature dependence of Coulomb blockade peaks in one-dimensional quantum dots obeys non-universal power-laws from which different values of the interaction strength can be deduced. We find that, depending on the temperature range, measurements probe local or global properties of the interaction. In particular, we investigate the role of contacting semiconductor quantum wires and nanotubes connected to leads through tunnel junctions and compare to recent experiments. We conclude that a conventional Luttinger Liquid description of the quantum wire does explain the observed behaviour if specific properties of either experimental setup are carefully taken into account.

Photoconductance of a one-dimensional quantum dot

The ac-transport properties of a one-dimensional quantum dot with non-Fermi liquid correlations are investigated. It is found that the linear photoconductance is drastically influenced by the interaction. Temperature and voltage dependences of the sideband peaks are treated in detail. Characteristic Luttinger liquid power laws are founded.

Transport through a one-dimensional quantum dot

We examine the effects of long-range interactions in a quantum wire with two impurities. We employ the bosonization technique and derive an effective action for the system. The effect of the long-range interaction on the charging energy and spectral properties of the island formed by the impurities and the linear transport is discussed.

Transport in quantum wires with impurities at finite temperatures

The temperature dependence of Coulomb blockade peaks of a one dimensional quantum dot is calculated. The Coulomb interaction is treated microscopically using the Luttinger liquid model. The electron interaction is assumed to be non-homogeneous with a maximum strength near the quantum dot. The conductance peaks show non-analytic power law behaviour induced by the interaction. It is shown that there is a crossover in the power law which is related to the inhomogeneity of the interaction.

New selection rules for resonant Raman scattering on quantum wires

The bosonisation technique is used to calculate the resonant Raman spectrum of a quantum wire with two electronic sub-bands occupied. Close to resonance, the cross section at frequencies in the region of the inter sub-band transitions shows distinct peaks in parallel polarisation of the incident and scattered light that are signature of collective higher order spin density excitations. This is in striking contrast to the conventional selection rule for non-resonant Raman scattering according to which spin modes can appear only in perpendicular polarisation. We predict a new selection rule for the excitations observed near resonance, namely that, apart from charge density excitations, only spin modes with positive group velocities can appear as peaks in the spectra in parallel configuration close to resonance. The results are consistent with all of the presently available experimental data.

Charge and spin addition energies of one dimensional quantumn dot

We derive the effective action for a one dimensional electron island formed between a double barrier in a single channel quantum wire including the electron spin. Current and energy addition terms corresponding to charge and spin are identified. The influence of the range and the strength of the electron interaction and other system parameters on the charge and spin addition energies, and on the excitation spectra of the modes confined within the island is studied. We find by comparison with experiment that spin excitations in addition to non-zero range of the interaction and inhomogeneity effects are important for understanding the electron transport through one dimensional quantum islands in cleaved-edge-overgrowth systems.

Tomonaga-Luttinger features in the resonant Raman spectra of quantum wires

The differential cross section for resonant Raman scattering from the collective modes in a one dimensional system of interacting electrons is calculated non-perturbatively using the bosonization method. The results indicate that resonant Raman spectroscopy is a powerful tool for studying Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behaviour in quasi-one dimensional electron systems.

Subdiffusive and superdiffusive quantum transport and generalized duality

As a generic model for transport of interacting fermions through a barrier or interstitials in a lattice, quantum Brownian motion in a periodic potential is studied. There is a duality transformation between the continuous coordinate or phase representation and the discrete momentum or charge representation for general frequency-dependent damping. Sub-Ohmic friction is mapped on super-Ohmic friction, and vice versa. The mapping is exact for arbitrary barrier height and valid at any temperature. Thus all features of the continuous model can be investigated from analytical or numerical analysis of the discrete model. New nonperturbative results for the frequency-dependent linear mobility including subdiffusive and superdiffusive behaviors are reported.

Low-temperature transport of correlated electrons

Transport properties of a single-channel Luttinger liquid impinging on a barrier have been studied for $g=1/2 - ε$, where $g$ is the dimensionless interaction constant and $|ε| \ll 1$. The relevant diagrams contributing to the conductance are identified and evaluated in all orders. Our approach represents a leading-log summation which is valid for sufficiently low temperature and small voltage. The asymptotic low-temperature corrections exhibit a turnover from the $T^{2/g-2}$ behavior to a universal $T^2$ law as the voltage is increased.

Asymptotic tunneling conductance in Luttinger liquids

Conductance through weak constrictions in Luttinger liquids is shown to vanish with frequency $ω$ as $c_1 ω^2 + c_2 ω^{2/g - 2}$, where $g$ is a dimensionless parameter characterizing the Luttinger liquid phase, and $c_1$ and $c_2$ are nonuniversal constants. The first term arises from the ^^ Coulomb blockade' effect and dominates for $g < 1/2$, whereas the second results from eliminating high-energy modes and dominates for $g > 1/2$.
