Random walks on finite lattice tubes

Exact results are obtained for random walks on finite lattice tubes with a single source and absorbing lattice sites at the ends. Explicit formulae are derived for the absorption probabilities at the ends and for the expectations that a random walk will visit a particular lattice site before being absorbed. Results are obtained for lattice tubes of arbitrary size and each of the regular lattice types; square, triangular and honeycomb. The results include an adjustable parameter to model the effects of strain, such as surface curvature, on the surface diffusion. Results for the triangular lattice tubes and the honeycomb lattice tubes model diffusion of adatoms on single walled zig-zag carbon nano-tubes with open ends.

Thermodynamic properties of an integrable quantum spin ladder with boundary impurities

An integrable quantum spin ladder based on the SU(4) symmetry algebra with boundary defects is studied in the framework of boundary integrability. Five nontrivial solutions of the reflection equations lead to different boundary impurities. In each case the energy spectrum is determined using the quantum inverse scattering method. The thermodynamic properties are investigated by means of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. In particular, the susceptibility and the magnetization of the model in the vicinity of the critical points are derived along with differing magnetic properites for antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic impurity couplings at the edges. The results are applicable to the strong coupling ladder compounds, such as Cu_2(C_5 H_12 N_2)_2 Cl_4.

Magnetization Plateaux in Bethe Ansatz Solvable Spin-S Ladders

We examine the properties of the Bethe Ansatz solvable two- and three-leg spin-$S$ ladders. These models include Heisenberg rung interactions of arbitrary strength and thus capture the physics of the spin-$S$ Heisenberg ladders for strong rung coupling. The discrete values derived for the magnetization plateaux are seen to fit with the general prediction based on the Lieb-Schultz- Mattis theorem. We examine the magnetic phase diagram of the spin-1 ladder in detail and find an extended magnetization plateau at the fractional value $ = {1/2}$ in agreement with the experimental observation for the spin-1 ladder compound BIP-TENO.

The Rotor Model and Combinatorics

We examine the groundstate wavefunction of the rotor model for different boundary conditions. Three conjectures are made on the appearance of numbers enumerating alternating sign matrices. In addition to those occurring in the O($n=1$) model we find the number $A_{\rm V}(2m+1;3)$, which 3-enumerates vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices.

The dilute A$_4$ model, the E$_7$ mass spectrum and the tricritical Ising model

The exact perturbation approach is used to derive the (seven) elementary correlation lengths and related mass gaps of the two-dimensional dilute A$_4$ lattice model in regime 2- from the Bethe ansatz solution. This model provides a realisation of the integrable $ϕ(1,2)$ perturbation of the c=7/10 conformal field theory, which is known to describe the off-critical thermal behaviour of the tricritical Ising model. The E$_7$ masses predicted from purely elastic scattering theory follow in the approach to criticality. Universal amplitudes for the tricritical Ising model are calculated.

The quantum symmetric XXZ chain at Delta=-1/2, alternating sign matrices and plane partitions

We consider the groundstate wavefunction of the quantum symmetric antiferromagnetic XXZ chain with open and twisted boundary conditions at $Δ=-{1/2}$, along with the groundstate wavefunction of the corresponding O($n$) loop model at $n=1$. Based on exact results for finite-size systems, sums involving the wavefunction components, and in some cases the largest component itself, are conjectured to be directly related to the total number of alternating sign matrices and plane partitions in certain symmetry classes.

Magnetization Plateaus in a Solvable 3-Leg Spin Ladder

We present a solvable ladder model which displays magnetization plateaus at fractional values of the total magnetization. Plateau signatures are also shown to exist along special lines. The model has isotropic Heisenberg interactions with additional many-body terms. The phase diagram can be calculated exactly for all values of the rung coupling and the magnetic field. We also derive the anomalous behaviour of the susceptibility near the plateau boundaries. There is good agreement with the phase diagram obtained recently for the pure Heisenberg ladders by numerical and perturbative techniques.

The inversion relation and the dilute A_{3,4,6} eigenspectrum

On the basis of the result obtained by applying Baxter's exact perturbative approach to the dilute A_3 model to give the E_8 mass spectrum, the dilute A_L inversion relation was used to predict the eigenspectra in the L=4 and L=6 cases (corresponding to E_7 and E_6 respectively). In calculating the next-to-leading term in the correlation lengths, or equivalently masses, the inversion relation condition gives a surprisingly simple result in all three cases, and for all masses.

Exactly solvable su(N) mixed spin ladders

It is shown that solvable mixed spin ladder models can be constructed from su(N) permutators. Heisenberg rung interactions appear as chemical potential terms in the Bethe Ansatz solution. Explicit examples given are a mixed spin-1/2 spin-1 ladder, a mixed spin-1/2 spin-3/2 ladder and a spin-1 ladder with biquadratic interactions.

Phase diagram of the su(8) quantum spin tube

We calculate the phase diagram of an integrable anisotropic 3-leg quantum spin tube connected to the su(8) algebra. We find several quantum phase transitions for antiferromagnetic rung couplings. Their locations are calculated exactly from the Bethe Ansatz solution and we discuss the nature of each of the different phases.

Exactly solvable quantum spin ladders associated with the orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras

We extend the results of spin ladder models associated with the Lie algebras $su(2^n)$ to the case of the orthogonal and symplectic algebras $o(2^n),\ sp(2^n)$ where n is the number of legs for the system. Two classes of models are found whose symmetry, either orthogonal or symplectic, has an explicit n dependence. Integrability of these models is shown for an arbitrary coupling of XX type rung interactions and applied magnetic field term.

Ground state energy and mass gap of a generalised quantum spin ladder

We show that a 2-leg ladder hamiltonian introduced recently by Albeverio and Fei (cond-mat/9807341) can be made to satisfy the Hecke algebra. As a result we have found an equivalent representation of the eigenspectrum in terms of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic XXZ chain at $Δ= - 5/3$. The values of thermodynamic quantities such as the ground state energy and mass gap follow from the known XXZ results.

Exactly solvable quantum spin tubes and ladders

We find families of integrable n-leg spin-1/2 ladders and tubes with general isotropic exchange interactions between spins. These models are equivalent to su(N) spin chains with N=2^n. Arbitrary rung interactions in the spin tubes and ladders induce chemical potentials in the equivalent spin chains. The potentials are n-dependent and differ for the tube and ladder models. The models are solvable by means of nested Bethe Ansatz.

The integrable open XXZ chain with broken Z_2 symmetry

The hamiltonian of an asymmetric diffusion process with injection and ejection of particles at the ends of a chain of finite length is known to be relevant to that of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain with integrable boundary terms. However, the inclusion of boundary sources and sinks of particles breaks the arrow-reversal symmetry necessary for solution via the usual Bethe Ansatz approach. Developments in solving the model in the absence of arrow-reversal symmetry are discussed.

The O(n) loop model on the 3-12 lattice

The partition function of the O(n) loop model on the honeycomb lattice is mapped to that of the O(n) loop model on the 3-12 lattice. Both models share the same operator content and thus critical exponents. The critical points are related via a simple transformation of variables. When n=0 this gives the recently found exact value $μ= 1.711 041...$ for the connective constant of self-avoiding walks on the 3-12 lattice. The exact critical points are recovered for the Ising model on the 3-12 lattice and the dual asanoha lattice at n=1.

Exactly solved lattice models: from polymer networks to an Ising model in a magnetic field

Some recent developments in the study of exactly solved lattice models in statistical mechanics are briefly reviewed. These include work with Debbie Bennett-Wood and Aleks Owczarek on polymers at surfaces (cond-mat/9805148) and with Katherine Seaton on the calculation of correlation lengths and the E_8 mass spectrum of the dilute A_3 lattice model (hep-th/9712121).

Continuum model for radial interface growth

A stochastic partial differential equation along the lines of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation is introduced for the evolution of a growing interface in a radial geometry. Regular polygon solutions as well as radially symmetric solutions are identified in the deterministic limit. The polygon solutions, of relevance to on-lattice Eden growth from a seed in the zero-noise limit, are unstable in the continuum in favour of the symmetric solutions. The asymptotic surface width scaling for stochastic radial interface growth is investigated through numerical simulations and found to be characterized by the same scaling exponent as that for stochastic growth on a substrate.
