Two-dimensional polymer networks at a mixed boundary: Surface and wedge exponents

We provide general formulae for the configurational exponents of an arbitrary polymer network connected to the surface of an arbitrary wedge of the two-dimensional plane, where the surface is allowed to assume a general mixture of boundary conditions on either side of the wedge. We report on a comprehensive study of a linear chain by exact enumeration, with various attachments of the walk's ends to the surface, in wedges of angles $π/2$ and $π$, with general mixed boundary conditions.

Surface width scaling in noise reduced Eden clusters

The surface width scaling of Eden A clusters grown from a single aggregate site on the square lattice is investigated as a function of the noise reduction parameter. A two-exponent scaling ansatz is introduced and used to fit the results from simulations covering the range from fully stochastic to the zero-noise limit.

Mean field analysis of Williams-Bjerknes type growth

We investigate a class of stochastic growth models involving competition between two phases in which one of the phases has a competitive advantage. The equilibrium populations of the competing phases are calculated using a mean field analysis. Regression probabilities for the extinction of the advantaged phase are calculated in a leading order approximation. The results of the calculations are in good agreement with simulations carried out on a square lattice with periodic boundaries. The class of models are variants of the Williams- Bjerknes model for the growth of tumours in the basal layer of an epithelium. In the limit in which only one of the phases is unstable the class of models reduces to the well known variants of the Eden model.

Excitations in the dilute A_L lattice model: E_6, E_7 and E_8 mass spectra

On the basis of features observed in the exact perturbation approach solution for the eigenspectrum of the dilute A_3 model, we propose expressions for excitations in the dilute A_4 and A_6 models. Principally, we require that these expressions satisfy the appropriate inversion relations. We demonstrate that they give the expected E_7 and E_6 mass spectra, and universal amplitudes, and agree with numerical expressions for the eigenvalues.

Correlation lengths and E_8 mass spectrum of the dilute A_3 lattice model

The exact perturbation approach is used to derive the elementary correlation lengths $ξ_i$ and related mass gaps $m_i$ of the two-dimensional dilute A_L lattice model in regimes 1 and 2 for L odd from the Bethe Ansatz solution. In regime 2 the A_3 model is the E_8 lattice realisation of the two-dimensional Ising model in a magnetic field at T=T_c. The calculations for the A_3 model in regime 2 start from the eight thermodynamically significant string types found in previous numerical studies. These string types are seen to be consistent in the ordered high field limit. The eight masses obtained reduce with the approach to criticality to the E_8 masses predicted by Zamolodchikov, thus providing a further direct lattice determination of the E_8 mass spectrum.

Collapse of a polymer in two dimensions

We numerically investigate the influence of self-attraction on the critical behaviour of a polymer in two dimensions, by means of an analysis of finite-size results of transfer-matrix calculations. The transfer matrix is constructed on the basis of the O($n$) loop model in the limit $n \to 0$. It yields finite-size results for the magnetic correlation length of systems with a cylindrical geometry. A comparison with the predictions of finite-size scaling enables us to obtain information about the phase diagram as a function of the chemical potential of the loop segments and the strength of the attractive potential. Results for the magnetic scaling dimension can be interpreted in terms of known universality classes. In particular, when the attractive potential is increased, we observe the crossover between polymer critical behaviour of the self-avoiding walk type to behaviour described earlier for the theta point.

Magnetic Correlation Length and Universal Amplitude of the Lattice E_8 Ising Model

The perturbation approach is used to derive the exact correlation length $ξ$ of the dilute A_L lattice models in regimes 1 and 2 for L odd. In regime 2 the A_3 model is the E_8 lattice realisation of the two-dimensional Ising model in a magnetic field h at T=T_c. When combined with the singular part f_s of the free energy the result for the A_3 model gives the universal amplitude $f_s ξ^2 = 0.061~728...$ as $h\to 0$ in precise agreement with the result obtained by Delfino and Mussardo via the form-factor bootstrap approach.

Free energies and critical exponents of the A_1^{(1)}, B_n^{(1)}, C_n^{(1)} and D_n^{(1)} face models

We obtain the free energies and critical exponents of models associated with elliptic solutions of the star-triangle relation and reflection equation. The models considered are related to the affine Lie algebras A_1^{(1)}, B_n^{(1)},C_n^{(1)} and D_n^{(1)}. The bulk and surface specific heat exponents are seen to satisfy the scaling relation 2α_s = α_b + 2. It follows from scaling relations that in regime III the correlation length exponent νis given by ν=(l+g)/2g, where l is the level and g is the dual Coxeter number. In regime II we find ν=(l+g)/2l.

Spin excitations in the integrable open quantum group invariant supersymmetric t-J model

The integrable quantum group $spl_q(2,1)$-invariant supersymmetric t-J model with open boundaries is studied via an analytic treatment of the Bethe equations. An $su(2)$ feature is seen to hold for states at or close to half-filling. For these states the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix of the t-J model satisfy a set of $su(2)$ functional relations. The finite-size corrections to the relevant eigenvalues, and thus the surface effect on the spin excitations, have been calculated analytically by solving the functional relations.

Reflection equations and surface critical phenomena

A brief review is given of recent developments in the study of surface critical phenomena from the viewpoint of exactly solved lattice models. These developments include exact results for the polymer adsorption transition and the surface critical exponents of the eight-vertex model.

Surface Critical Phenomena and Scaling in the Eight-Vertex Model

We give a physical interpretation of the entries of the reflection $K$-matrices of Baxter's eight-vertex model in terms of an Ising interaction at an open boundary. Although the model still defies an exact solution we nevertheless obtain the exact surface free energy from a crossing-unitarity relation. The singular part of the surface energy is described by the critical exponents $α_s = 2 - \fracπ{2μ}$ and $α_1 = 1 - \fracπμ$, where $μ$ controls the strength of the four-spin interaction. These values reduce to the known Ising exponents at the decoupling point $μ=π/2$ and confirm the scaling relations $α_s = α_b + ν$ and $α_1 = α_b -1$.

Integrable O(n) model on the honeycomb lattice via reflection matrices : Surface critical behaviour

We study the $O(n)$ loop model on the honeycomb lattice with open boundary conditions. Reflection matrices for the underlying Izergin-Korepin $R$-matrix lead to three inequivalent sets of integrable boundary weights. One set, which has previously been considered, gives rise to the ordinary surface transition. The other two sets correspond respectively to the special surface transition and the mixed ordinary-special transition. We analyse the Bethe ansatz equations derived for these integrable cases and obtain the surface energies together with the central charges and scaling dimensions characterizing the corresponding phase transitions.

Exact solution for the spin-$s$ XXZ quantum chain with non-diagonal twists

We study integrable vertex models and quantum spin chains with toroidal boundary conditions. An interesting class of such boundaries is associated with non-diagonal twist matrices. For such models there are no trivial reference states upon which a Bethe ansatz calculation can be constructed, in contrast to the well-known case of periodic boundary conditions. In this paper we show how the transfer matrix eigenvalue expression for the spin-$s$ XXZ chain twisted by the charge-conjugation matrix can in fact be obtained. The technique used is the generalization to spin-$s$ of the functional relation method based on ``pair-propagation through a vertex''. The Bethe ansatz-type equations obtained reduce, in the case of lattice size $N=1$, to those recently found for the Hofstadter problem of Bloch electrons on a square lattice in a magnetic field.

Exact solution and interfacial tension of the six-vertex model with anti-periodic boundary conditions

We consider the six-vertex model with anti-periodic boundary conditions across a finite strip. The row-to-row transfer matrix is diagonalised by the `commuting transfer matrices' method. {}From the exact solution we obtain an independent derivation of the interfacial tension of the six-vertex model in the anti-ferroelectric phase. The nature of the corresponding integrable boundary condition on the $XXZ$ spin chain is also discussed.

Exact Results for the Adsorption of a Flexible Self-Avoiding Polymer Chain in Two Dimensions

We derive the exact critical couplings ($x^*, y_{\rm a}^*$), where $y_{\rm a}^*/x^* = \sqrt{1+\sqrt2} = 1.533\ldots\,$, for the polymer adsorption transition on the honeycomb lattice, along with the universal critical exponents, from the Bethe Ansatz solution of the O($n$) loop model at the special transition. Our result for the thermal scaling dimension, and thus the crossover exponent $ϕ=\frac{1}{2}$, is in agreement with an earlier result based on conformal invariance arguments. Our result for the geometric scaling dimensions confirms recent conjectures that they are given by $h_{\ell+1,3}$ in the Kac formula.

Integrable vertex and loop models on the square lattice with open boundaries via reflection matrices

The procedure for obtaining integrable vertex models via reflection matrices on the square lattice with open boundaries is reviewed and explicitly carried out for a number of two- and three-state vertex models. These models include the six-vertex model, the 15-vertex $A_2^{(1)}$ model and the 19-vertex models of Izergin-Korepin and Zamolodchikov-Fateev. In each case the eigenspectra is determined by application of either the algebraic or the analytic Bethe ansatz with inhomeogeneities. With suitable choices of reflection matrices, these vertex models can be associated with integrable loop models on the same lattice. In general, the required choices {\em do not} coincide with those which lead to quantum group-invariant spin chains. The exact solution of the integrable loop models -- including an $O(n)$ model on the square lattice with open boundaries -- is of relevance to the surface critical behaviour of two-dimensional polymers.

Exact Results for Hamiltonian Walks from the Solution of the Fully Packed Loop Model on the Honeycomb Lattice

We derive the nested Bethe Ansatz solution of the fully packed O($n$) loop model on the honeycomb lattice. From this solution we derive the bulk free energy per site along with the central charge and geometric scaling dimensions describing the critical behaviour. In the $n=0$ limit we obtain the exact compact exponents $γ=1$ and $ν=1/2$ for Hamiltonian walks, along with the exact value $κ^2 = 3 \sqrt 3 /4$ for the connective constant (entropy). Although having sets of scaling dimensions in common, our results indicate that Hamiltonian walks on the honeycomb and Manhattan lattices lie in different universality classes.
