Carbon and Oxygen Galactic Gradients: Observational Values from HII Region Recombination Lines

We present results of deep echelle spectrophotometry of eight Galactic HII regions located at Galactocentric distances between 6.3 and 10.4 kpc. The data have been taken with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) Ultraviolet Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) in the 3100 to 10360 A range. We have derived C++ and O++ abundances from recombination lines for all the objects, as well as O+ abundances from this kind of lines for three of the nebulae. The intensity of recombination lines is almost independent of the assumed electron temperature as well as of the possible presence of spatial temperature variations or fluctuations inside the nebulae. These data allow the determination of the gas-phase C and O abundance gradients of the Galactic disk, of paramount importance for chemical evolution models. This is the first time the C gradient is derived from such a large number of HII regions and for such a wide range of Galactocentric distances. Abundance gradients are found of the form $Δ$log(O/H) = -0.044$\pm$0.010 dex kpc^-1, $Δ$log(C/H) = -0.103$\pm$0.018 dex kpc^-1, and $Δ$log(C/O) = -0.058$\pm$0.018 dex kpc^-1.

A reappraisal of the chemical composition of the Orion nebula based on VLT echelle spectrophotometry

We present VLT UVES echelle spectrophotometry of the Orion nebula in the 3100 to 10400 A range. We have measured the intensity of 555 emission lines, many of them corresponding to permitted lines of different heavy-element ions. This is the largest set of spectral emission lines ever obtained for a Galactic or extragalactic HII region. We have derived He+, C++, O+, O++ and Ne++ abundances from pure recombination lines. This is the first time that O+ and Ne++ abundances are obtained from this kind of lines in the nebula. We have also derived abundances from collisionally excited lines for a large number of ions of different elements. In all cases, ionic abundances obtained from recombination lines are larger than those derived from collisionally excited lines. We have obtained remarkably consistent independent estimations of the temperature fluctuations parameter, t2, from different methods, which are also similar to other estimates from the literature. This result strongly suggests that moderate temperature fluctuations -t2 between 0.02 and 0.03- are present in the Orion nebula. We have compared the chemical composition of the nebula with those of the Sun and other representative objects. The heavy element abundances in the Orion nebula are only slightly higher than the solar ones, a difference that can be explained by the chemical evolution of the solar vicinity.

Chemical abundances of the Galactic H II region NGC 3576 derived from VLT echelle spectrophotometry

We present echelle spectrophotometry of the Galactic H II region NGC 3576. The data have been taken with the VLT UVES echelle spectrograph in the 3100 to 10400 angstroms range. We have measured the intensities of 458 emission lines, 344 are permitted lines of H0, He0, C+, N0, N+, N++, O0, O+, Ne+, S++, Si0, Si+, Ar0 and Ar+; some of them are produced by recombination and others mainly by fluorescence. Electron temperatures and densities have been determined using different continuum and line intensity ratios. We have derived He+, C++, O+, O++ and Ne++ ionic abundances from pure recombination lines. We have also derived abundances from collisionally excited lines for a large number of ions of different elements. Remarkably consistent estimations of t2 have been obtained by comparing Balmer and Paschen to [O III] temperatures, and O++ and Ne++ ionic abundances obtained from collisionally excited and recombination lines. The chemical composition of NGC 3576 is compared with those of other Galactic H II regions and with the one from the Sun. A first approach to the gas-phase Galactic radial abundance gradient of C as well as of the C/O ratio has been made.

Evolution of the Nuclear Accretion Disk Emission in NGC 1097: Getting Closer to the Black Hole

We study the evolution of the broad, double-peaked Halpha emission-line profile of the LINER/Seyfert 1 nucleus of NGC 1097, using 24 spectra obtained over a time span of 11 yrs - from 1991 Nov. through 2002 Oct. While in the first 5 yrs the main variation was in the relative intensity of the blue and red peaks, in the last years we have also observed an increasing separation between the two peaks, at the same time as the integrated flux in the broad line has decreased. We propose a scenario in which the emission originates in an asymmetric accretion disk around a supermassive black hole, whose source of ionization is getting dimmer, causing the region of maximum emission to come closer to the center (and thus to regions of higher projected velocity). We use the observations to constrain the evolution of the accretion disk emission and to evaluate two models: the elliptical disk model previously found to reproduce the observations from 1991 to 1996 and a model of a circular disk with a single spiral arm. We favor the latter, because the whole set of data is consistent with a monotonic precession of the spiral pattern, which has completed almost two revolutions since 1991. The precession period implies a black hole mass of approximately 5x10^7 solar masses. Finally, we have found tentative evidence of the emergence of an accretion disk wind, which we hope to explore further with future observations.

VLT Echelle Spectrophotometry of the Planetary Nebula NGC 5307 and Temperature Variations

Echelle spectrophotometry of the planetary nebula NGC 5307 is presented. The data consists of VLT UVES observations in the 3100 to 10360 A range. Electron temperatures and densities have been determined using different line intensity ratios. We determine the H, He, C, and O abundances based on recombination lines, these abundances are almost independent of the temperature structure of the nebula. We also determine the N, O, Ne, S, Cl, and Ar abundances based on collisionally excited lines, the ratios of these abundances relative to that of H depend strongly on the temperature structure of the nebula. From the OII/[OIII] ratio we find a t^2 = 0.056+-0.005. The chemical composition of NGC 5307 is compared with those of the Sun and the Orion nebula. From the study of the relative intensities of the OII recombination lines of multiplet 1 in this and other nebulae it isfound that for electron densities smaller than about 5000 cm-3 collisional redistribution is not complete, this effect has to be taken into account to derive the O abundances for those cases in which not all the lines of the multiplet are observed. From the 4649 OII versus N_e$(ClIII) diagram we find a critical electron density of 1325 cm-3 for collisional redistribution of the OII lines of multiplet 1. Also based on this diagram we argue that the OII and the [OIII] lines originate in the same regions. We also find that the radial velocities and the FWHM of the OII and [OIII] lines in NGC 5307 are similar supporting the previous result. These two results imply that for NGC 5307 and probably for many other gaseous nebulae chemical inhomogeneities are not responsible for the large temperature fluctuations observed.

The CYDER Survey: First Results

We present the Calan-Yale Deep Extragalactic Research (CYDER) Survey. The broad goals of the survey are the study of stellar populations, the star formation history of the universe and the formation and evolution of galaxies. The fields studied include Chandra deep pointings in order to characterize the X-ray faint populations. Here we present the results on the first fields studied. We find that the redshift distribution is consistent with that found in the Chandra Deep Field North. The distribution of hardness ratios is, however, softer in our sample. We find a high redshift quasar, CXOCY J125304.0-090737 at z=4.179, which suggests that the abundance of low luminosity high redshift quasars may be larger than what would be expected from reasonable extrapolations from the quasar optical luminosity function.

Evidence For A Precessing Accretion Disk in the Nucleus of NGC 1097

We present new spectroscopic observations of the LINER (and now Seyfert 1) nucleus of NGC 1097, and discuss the evolution of its broad, double-peaked Balmer lines. When originally discovered in 1991, the red peak of the double-peaked H-alpha line was stronger than the blue, while by 1994 the H-alpha profile had become almost symmetric and the integrated line flux had decreased to half its original value. Our new spectrum, taken in 1996, shows that the broad, double-peaked lines have returned to almost their original strengths, the profiles of H-beta and H-alpha are identical to within errors, and the broad-line emitting region is unreddened. However, the profile of the Balmer lines is now such that the blue peak is stronger than the red, opposite to the asymmetry observed in 1991. Various models are considered for the observed behavior, all assuming that the emission lines originate in an accretion disk. We present a refined version of the precessing, planar, elliptical accretion ring model proposed by Storchi-Bergmann et al. and Eracleous et al. This model provides an acceptable fit to the line profiles. We also consider the possibility that the line profile evolution results from a precessing warp in the disk, induced by irradiation from the center, and show that the range of radii and precession time scales expected in this model are consistent with the observations. The sudden appearance of the "disk-like" broad line profiles in NGC 1097 could have resulted from the formation of a new accretion disk due to, for example, the tidal disruption of a star, or the illumination of a pre-existing disk by a transient ionizing source at the center of the disk.
