Orbital characters of three-dimensional Fermi surfaces in Eu2-xSrxNiO4 as probed by soft-x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The three-dimensional Fermi surface structure of hole-doped metallic layered nickelate Eu2-xSrxNiO4 (x=1.1), an important counterpart to the isostructural superconducting cuprate La2-xSrxCuO4, is investigated by energy-dependent soft-x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In addition to a large cylindrical hole Fermi surface analogous to the cuprates, we observe a Gamma-centered 3z2-r2-derived small electron pocket. This finding demonstrates that in the layered nickelate the 3z2-r2 band resides close to the x2-y2 one in energy. The resultant multi-band feature with varying orbital character as revealed may strongly work against the emergence of the high-temperature superconductivity.

Thermoelectric response in the incoherent transport region near Mott transition: the case study of La1-xSrxVO3

We report a systematic investigation on the high-temperature thermoelectric response in a typical filling-control Mott transition system La1-xSrxVO3. In the vicinity of the Mott transition, incoherent charge transport appears with increasing temperature and the thermopower undergoes two essential crossovers, asymptotically approaching the limit values expected from the entropy consideration, as known as Heikes formula. By comparison with the results of the dynamical mean field theory, we show that the thermopower in the Mott critical state mainly measures the entropy per charge carrier that depends on electronic degrees of freedom available at the measurement temperature. Our findings verify that the Heikes formula is indeed applicable to the real correlated electron systems at practical temperatures (T>200K).

Pseudogap of metallic layered nickelate R2-xSrxNiO4 (R=Nd, Eu) crystals measured using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have investigated charge dynamics and electronic structures for single crystals of metallic layered nickelates, R2-xSrxNiO4 (R=Nd, Eu), isostructural to La2-xSrxCuO4. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the barely-metallic Eu0.9Sr1.1NiO4 (R=Eu, x=1.1) has revealed a large hole surface of x2-y2 character with a high-energy pseudogap of the same symmetry and comparable magnitude with those of underdoped (x<0.1) cuprates, although the antiferromagnetic interactions are one order of magnitude smaller. This finding strongly indicates that the momentum-dependent pseudogap feature in the layered nickelate arises from the real-space charge correlation.

Large Magnetoresistance and Spin-Polarized Heavy-Mass Electron State in a Doped Valence Bond Solid (Ti1-xVx)2O3

A heavy-mass electron state is realized in a doped valence bond solid (Ti1-xVx)2O3. In this system, itinerant holes mediate the mainly ferromagnetic RKKY interaction between the localized magnetic moments and become readily spin-polarized under a magnetic field, while showing large negative magnetoresistance. In spite of the ferromagnetic interaction among the carriers, their effective mass is found to be 1 or 2 orders of magnitude larger than that of usual doped semiconductors. Such strong mass renormalization is ascribable to the polaron formation on the Ti-dimer, where the spin-singlet state is originally formed. Doping dependence of the electronic specific-heat coefficient implies that the dimeric lattice fluctuation or softening is responsible for the enhanced electron-phonon interaction.

Measurement of Spin-Density Matrix Elements for $ϕ$-Meson Photoproduction from Protons and Deuterons Near Threshold

The LEPS/SPring-8 experiment made a comprehensive measurement of the spin-density matrix elements for $γp \to ϕp$, $γd \to ϕp n$ and $γd \to ϕd$ at forward production angles. A linearly polarized photon beam at $E_γ$=1.6-2.4 GeV was used for the production of $ϕ$ mesons. The natural-parity Pomeron exchange processes remains dominant nearthreshold. The unnatural-parity processes of pseudoscalar exchange is visible in the production from nucleons but is greatly reduced in the coherent production from deuterons. There is no strong $E_γ$-dependence, but some dependence on momentum-transfer. A small but finite value of the spin-density matrix elements reflecting helicity-nonconserving amplitudes in the $t$-channel is observed.

Measurement of the incoherent $γd \to ϕp n$ photoproduction near threshold

We report measurements of differential cross sections and decay asymmetries of incoherent $ϕ$-meson photoproduction from the deuteron at forward angles using linearly polarized photons at \Eg=1.5-2.4 GeV. The nuclear transparency ratio for the deuteron shows a large suppression, and is consistent with the A-dependence of the ratio observed in a previous measurement with nuclear targets. The reduction for the deuteron cannot be adequately explained in term of isospin asymmetry. The present results suggest the need of refining our understanding of the $ϕ$-N interaction within a nucleus.

Universal power laws in the threshold network model: A theoretical analysis based on extreme value theory

We theoretically and numerically investigated the threshold network model with a generic weight function where there were a large number of nodes and a high threshold. Our analysis was based on extreme value theory, which gave us a theoretical understanding of the distribution of independent and identically distributed random variables within a sufficiently high range. Specifically, the distribution could be generally expressed by a generalized Pareto distribution, which enabled us to formulate the generic weight distribution function. By using the theorem, we obtained the exact expressions of degree distribution and clustering coefficient which behaved as universal power laws within certain ranges of degrees. We also compared the theoretical predictions with numerical results and found that they were extremely consistent.

Proton decay from the isoscalar giant dipole resonance in $^{58}$Ni

Proton decay from the 3$\hbarω$ isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in $^{58}$Ni has been measured using the ($α,α'p$) reaction at a bombarding energy of 386 MeV to investigate its decay properties. We have extracted the ISGDR strength under the coincidence condition between inelastically scattered $α$ particles at forward angles and decay protons emitted at backward angles. Branching ratios for proton decay to low-lying states of $^{57}$Co have been determined, and the results compared to predictions of recent continuum-RPA calculations. The final-state spectra of protons decaying to the low-lying states in $^{57}$Co were analyzed for a more detailed understanding of the structure of the ISGDR. It is found that there are differences in the structure of the ISGDR as a function of excitation energy.

Anomalous metallic state in the vicinity of Metal to Valence Bond Solid insulator transition in LiVS2

We investigate LiVS2 and LiVSe2 with a triangular lattice as itinerant analogues of LiVO2, known for the formation of valence bond solid (VBS) state out of S = 1 frustrated magnet. LiVS2, which is located at the border between a metal and a correlated insulator, shows a first ordered transition from a paramagnetic metal to a VBS insulator at Tc ~ 305 K upon cooling. The presence of VBS state in the close vicinity of insulator-metal transition may suggest the importance of itinerancy in the formation of VBS state. We argue that the high temperature metallic phase of LiVS2 has a pseudo-gap, likely originating from the VBS fluctuation. LiVSe2 was found to be a paramagnetic metal down to 2 K.

Direct proton decay of the isoscalar giant dipole resonance in 208Pb

The excitation and subsequent proton decay of the isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in $^{208}$Pb have been investigated via the $^{208}$Pb($α, α^{\prime}p)^{207}$Tl reaction at 400 MeV. Excitation of the ISGDR has been identified by the difference-of-spectra method. The enhancement of the ISGDR strength at high excitation energies observed in the multipole-decomposition-analysis of the singles $^{208}$Pb($α,α^{\prime}$) spectra is not present in the excitation energy spectrum obtained in coincidence measurement. The partial branching ratios for direct proton decay of ISGDR to low-lying states of $^{207}$Tl have been determined and the results are compared with predictions of continuum random-phase-approximation (CRPA) calculations.

Ground-state electric quadrupole moment of 31Al

Ground-state electric quadrupole moment of 31Al (I =5/2+, T_1/2 = 644(25) ms) has been measured by means of the beta-NMR spectroscopy using a spin-polarized 31Al beam produced in the projectile fragmentation reaction. The obtained Q moment, |Q_exp(31Al)| = 112(32)emb, are in agreement with conventional shell model calculations within the sd valence space. Previous result on the magnetic moment also supports the validity of the sd model in this isotope, and thus it is concluded that 31Al is located outside of the island of inversion.

Photoproduction of Lambda(1405) and Sigma^{0}(1385) on the proton at E_γ= 1.5-2.4 GeV

Differential cross sections for $γp \to K^+Λ(1405)$ and $γp \to K^+Σ^0(1385)$ reactions have been measured in the photon energy range from 1.5 to 2.4 GeV and the angular range of $0.8<\cos(Θ)<1.0$ for the $K^+$ scattering angle in the center-of-mass system. This data is the first measurement of the $Λ(1405)$ photoproduction cross section. The lineshapes of \LamS measured in $Σ^+π^-$ and $Σ^-π^+$ decay modes were different with each other, indicating a strong interference of the isospin 0 and 1 terms of the $Σπ$ scattering amplitudes. The ratios of \LamS production to \SigS production were measured in two photon energy ranges: near the production threshold ($1.5<E_γ<2.0$ GeV) and far from it ($2.0 <E_γ<2.4$ GeV). The observed ratio decreased in the higher photon energy region, which may suggest different production mechanisms and internal structures for these hyperon resonances.

Charge dynamics in thermally and doping induced insulator-metal transitions of (Ti1-xVx)2O3

Charge dynamics of (Ti1-xVx)2O3 with x=0-0.06 has been investigated by measurements of charge transport and optical conductivity spectra in a wide temperature range of 2-600K with the focus on the thermally and doping induced insulator-metal transitions (IMTs). The optical conductivity peaks for the interband transitions in the 3d t2g manifold are observed in the both insulating and metallic states, while their large variation (by ~0.4 eV) with change of temperature and doping level scales with that of the Ti-Ti dimer bond length, indicating the weakened singlet bond in the course of IMTs. The thermally and V-doping induced IMTs are driven with the increase in carrier density by band-crossing and hole-doping, respectively, in contrast to the canonical IMT of correlated oxides accompanied by the whole collapse of the Mott gap.

Gamow-Teller strength for the analog transitions to the first T=1/2, J^pi=3/2- states in 13C and 13N and the implications for Type Ia supernovae

The Gamow-Teller strength for the transition from the ground state of 13C to the T=1/2, J^pi=3/2- excited state at 3.51 MeV in 13N is extracted via the 13C(3He,t) reaction at 420 MeV. In contrast to results from earlier (p,n) studies on 13C, a good agreement with shell-model calculations and the empirical unit cross section systematics from other nuclei is found. The results are used to study the analog 13N(e-,v_e)13C reaction, which plays a role in the pre-explosion convective phase of type Ia supernovae. Although the differences between the results from the (3He,t) and (p,n) data significantly affect the deduced electron-capture rate and the net heat-deposition in the star due to this transition, the overall effect on the pre-explosive evolution is small.

On the extraction of weak transition strengths via the (3He,t) reaction at 420 MeV

Differential cross sections for transitions of known weak strength were measured with the (3He,t) reaction at 420 MeV on targets of 12C, 13C, 18O, 26Mg, 58Ni, 60Ni, 90Zr, 118Sn, 120Sn and 208Pb. Using this data, it is shown the proportionalities between strengths and cross sections for this probe follow simple trends as a function of mass number. These trends can be used to confidently determine Gamow-Teller strength distributions in nuclei for which the proportionality cannot be calibrated via beta-decay strengths. Although theoretical calculations in distorted-wave Born approximation overestimate the data, they allow one to understand the main experimental features and to predict deviations from the simple trends observed in some of the transitions.

Proton elastic scattering from tin isotopes at 295 MeV and systematic change of neutron density distributions

Cross sections and analyzing powers for proton elastic scattering from $^{116,118,120,122,124}$Sn at 295 MeV have been measured for a momentum transfer of up to about 3.5 fm$^{-1}$ to deduce systematic changes of the neutron density distribution. We tuned the relativistic Love-Franey interaction to explain the proton elastic scattering of a nucleus whose density distribution is well known. Then, we applied this interaction to deduce the neutron density distributions of tin isotopes. The result of our analysis shows the clear systematic behavior of a gradual increase in the neutron skin thickness of tin isotopes with mass number.

Coexistence of long-ranged charge and orbital order and spin-glass state in single-layered manganites with weak quenched disorder

The relationship between orbital and spin degrees of freedom in the single-crystals of the hole-doped Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{1+x}$MnO$_4$, 0.3 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.7, has been investigated by means of ac-magnetometry and charge transport. Even though there is no cation ordering on the $A$-site, the quenched disorder is extremely weak in this system due to the very similar ionic size of Pr$^{3+}$ and Ca$^{2+}$. A clear asymmetric response of the system to the under- (respective over-) hole doping was observed. The long-ranged charge-orbital order established for half doping ($x$=0.5) subsists in the over-doping case ($x$ $>$ 0.5), albeit rearranged to accommodate the extra holes introduced in the structure. The charge-orbital order is however destabilized by the presence of extra localized electrons (under-doping, $x$ $<$ 0.5), leading to its disappearance below $x$=0.35. We show that in an intermediate under-doped region, with 0.35 $\leq$ $x$ $<$ 0.5, the ``orbital-master spin-slave'' relationship commonly observed in half-doped manganites does not take place. The long-ranged charge-orbital order is not accompanied by an antiferromagnetic transition at low temperatures, but by a frustrated short-ranged magnetic state bringing forth a spin-glass phase. We discuss in detail the nature and origin of this spin-glass state, which, as in the half-doped manganites with large quenched disorder, is not related to the macroscopic phase separation observed in crystals with minor defects or impurities.
