All-in-all-out magnetic domain wall conduction in pyrochlore iridate heterointerface

Pyrochlore oxides possessing "all-in-all-out" spin ordering have attracted burgeoning interest as a rich ground of emergent states. This ordering has two distinct types of magnetic domains (all-in-all-out or all-out-all-in) with broken time-reversal symmetry, and a non-trivial metallic surface state has been theoretically demonstrated to appear at their domain wall. Here, we report on observation of this metallic conduction at the single all-in-all-out/all-out-all-in magnetic domain wall formed at the heterointerface of two pyrochlore iridates. By utilizing different magnetoresponses of them with different lanthanide ions, the domain wall is controllably inserted at the heterointerface, the surface state being detected as anomalous conduction enhancement with a ferroic hysteresis. Our establishment paves the way for further investigation and manipulation of this new type of surface transport.

Effective Carrier Doping and Metallization in LaxSr2-x-yBayIrO4-delta Thin Films

We fabricate LaxSr2-x-yBayIrO4-delta thin films by pulsed laser deposition, in an effort to realize the effective carrier doping and metallization in the Sr2IrO4 system. We design ideal in-plane Ir-O-Ir frame structure by utilizing tensile substrate strain and Ba substitution, as well as control La doping and oxygen deficiency. This enables us to elucidate relation between the charge transport and the carrier density through systematic changes from original p-type spin-orbit Mott insulator to highly doped n-type metal.

All-in-all-out magnetic domain size in pyrochlore iridate thin films as probed by local magnetotransport

Pyrochlore iridates have attracted growing attention because of a theoretical prediction of a possible topological semimetal phase originating from all-in-all-out spin ordering. Related to the topological band structure, recent findings of the magnetic domain wall conduction have stimulated investigations of magnetic domain distribution in this system. Here, we investigate the size of magnetic domains in Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ single crystalline thin films by magnetoresistance (MR) using microscale Hall bars. Two distinct magnetic domains of the all-in-all-out spin structure are known to exhibit linear MR but with opposite signs, which enables us to estimate the ratio of the two domains in the patterned channel. The linear MR for 80 ${\times}$ 60 $μ$m$^2$ channel is nearly zero after zero-field cooling, suggesting random distribution of domains smaller than the channel size. In contrast, the wide distribution of the value of the linear MR is detected in 2 ${\times}$ 2 $μ$m$^2$ channel, reflecting the detectable domain size depending on each cooling-cycle. Compared to simulation results, we estimate the average size of a single all-in-all-out magnetic domain as 1-2 $μ$m.

Formation and observation of a quasi-two-dimensional $d_{xy}$ electron liquid in epitaxially stabilized Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$TiO$_{4}$ thin films

We report the formation and observation of an electron liquid in Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$TiO$_4$, the quasi-two-dimensional counterpart of SrTiO$_3$, through reactive molecular-beam epitaxy and {\it in situ} angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The lowest lying states are found to be comprised of Ti 3$d_{xy}$ orbitals, analogous to the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface and exhibit unusually broad features characterized by quantized energy levels and a reduced Luttinger volume. Using model calculations, we explain these characteristics through an interplay of disorder and electron-phonon coupling acting co-operatively at similar energy scales, which provides a possible mechanism for explaining the low free carrier concentrations observed at various oxide heterostructures such as the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface.

Odd-parity magnetoresistance in pyrochlore iridate thin films with broken time-reversal symmetry

A new class of materials termed topological insulators have been intensively investigated due to their unique Dirac surface state carrying dissipationless edge spin currents. Recently, it has been theoretically proposed that the three dimensional analogue of this type of band structure, the Weyl Semimetal phase, is materialized in pyrochlore oxides with strong spin-orbit coupling, accompanied by all-in-all-out spin ordering. Here, we report on the fabrication and magnetotransport of Eu2Ir2O7 single crystalline thin films. We reveal that one of the two degenerate all-in-all-out domain structures, which are connected by time-reversal operation, can be selectively formed by the polarity of the cooling magnetic field. Once formed, the domain is robust against an oppositely polarised magnetic field, as evidenced by an unusual odd field dependent term in the magnetoresistance and an anomalous term in the Hall resistance. Our findings pave the way for exploring the predicted novel quantum transport phenomenon at the surfaces/interfaces or magnetic domain walls of pyrochlore iridates.

Splitting of ISGMR strength in the light-mass nucleus $^{24}$Mg due to ground-state deformation

The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) strength distribution in $^{24}$Mg has been determined from background-free inelastic scattering of 386-MeV $α$ particles at extreme forward angles, including 0$^{\circ}$. The ISGMR strength distribution has been observed for the first time to have a two-peak structure in a light-mass nucleus. This splitting of ISGMR strength is explained well by microscopic theory in terms of the prolate deformation of the ground state of $^{24}$Mg.

Field-direction control of the type of charge carriers in nonsymmorphic IrO2

In the quest for switching of the charge carrier type in conductive materials, we focus on nonsymmorphic crystals, which are expected to have highly anisotropic folded Fermi surfaces due to the symmetry requirements. Following simple tight-binding model simulation, we prepare nonsymmorphic IrO2 single-crystalline films with various growth orientations by molecular beam epitaxy, and systematically quantify their Hall effect for the corresponding field directions. The results clearly demonstrate that the dominant carrier type can be intrinsically controlled by the magnetic field direction, as also evidenced by first-principles calculations revealing nontrivial momentum dependence of the group velocity and mass tensor on the folded Fermi surfaces and its anisotropic nature for the field direction.

Interplay of Spin-Orbit Interactions, Dimensionality, and Octahedral Rotations in Semimetallic SrIrO$_3$

We employ reactive molecular-beam epitaxy to synthesize the metastable perovskite SrIrO$_{3}$ and utilize {\it in situ} angle-resolved photoemission to reveal its electronic structure as an exotic narrow-band semimetal. We discover remarkably narrow bands which originate from a confluence of strong spin-orbit interactions, dimensionality, and both in- and out-of-plane IrO$_6$ octahedral rotations. The partial occupation of numerous bands with strongly mixed orbital characters signals the breakdown of the single-band Mott picture that characterizes its insulating two-dimensional counterpart, Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$, illustrating the power of structure-property relations for manipulating the subtle balance between spin-orbit interactions and electron-electron interactions.

Correlated vs. conventional insulating behavior in the Jeff=1/2 vs. 3/2 bands in the layered iridate Ba2IrO4

We employ molecular beam epitaxy to stabilize Ba2IrO4 thin films and utilize in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the evolution of its electronic structure through the Neel temperature TN. Our measurements indicate that dispersions of the relativistic Jeff=1/2 and 3/2 bands exhibit an unusual dichotomy in their behavior through the Neel transition. Although the charge gap survives into the paramagnetic state, only the Jeff=1/2 state exhibits a strong temperature dependence and its gap softens with increasing temperature approaching TN, while the nearly fully occupied Jeff=3/2 state which remains nearby in energy exhibits negligible changes with temperature.

Isoscalar Giant Resonance Strengths in $^{32}$S and possible excitations of superdeformed and $^{28}$Si + $α$ cluster bandheads

Isoscalar giant resonances and low spin states in $^{32}$S have been measured with inelastic $α$ scattering at extremely forward angles including zero degrees at E$_α$ = 386 MeV. By applying the multipole decomposition analysis, various excited states are classified according to their spin and parities (J$^π$), and are discussed in relation to the super deformed and $^{28}$Si + $α$ cluster bands.

Testing the Mutually Enhanced Magicity Effect in Nuclear Incompressibility via the Giant Monopole Resonance in the $^{204,206,208}$Pb Isotopes

Using inelastic $α$-scattering at extremely forward angles, including $0^\circ$, the strength distributions of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) have been measured in the $^{204,206,208}$Pb isotopes in order to examine the proposed mutually enhanced magicity (MEM) effect on the nuclear incompressibility. The MEM effect had been suggested as a likely explanation of the "softness" of nuclear incompressibility observed in the ISGMR measurements in the Sn and Cd isotopes. Our experimental results rule out any manifestation of the MEM effect in nuclear incompressibility and leave the question of the softness of the open-shell nuclei unresolved still.

Search for $K^-pp$ bound state via $γd \rightarrow K^+ π^-X$ reaction at $E_γ=1.5-2.4$ GeV

A search for $K^-pp$ bound state (the lightest kaonic nucleus) has been performed using the $γd \rightarrow K^+ π^- \rm{X}$ reaction at E$_γ$=1.5-2.4 GeV at LEPS/SPring-8. The differential cross section of $K^+ π^-$ photo-production off deuterium has been measured for the first time in this energy region, and a bump structure was searched for in the inclusive missing mass spectrum. A statistically significant bump structure was not observed in the region from 2.22 to 2.36 GeV/$c^2$, and the upper limits of the differential cross section for the $K^-pp$ bound state production were determined to be 0.1$-$0.7 $μ$ b (95$%$ confidence level) for a set of assumed binding energy and width values.

Backward-angle photoproduction of $ω$ and $η'$ mesons from protons at $E_γ=1.5-3.0$ GeV

We report the measurement of differential cross sections for $ω$ and $η'$ photoproduction from protons at backward angles ($-1.0<\cosΘ_{C.M}^{X}<-0.8$) using linearly polarized photons at $E_γ=$$1.5-3.0$ GeV. Differential cross sections for $ω$ mesons are larger than the predicted $u$-channel contribution in the energy range $2.0\leq\sqrt{s}\leq2.4$ GeV. The differential cross sections for $ω$ and $η'$ mesons become closer to the predicted $u$-channel contribution at $\sqrt{s}>2.4$ GeV. A bump structure in the $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the differential cross sections for $η'$ mesons was observed at $\sqrt{s}\sim$2.35 GeV.

Topological Surface States and Superconductivity in [Tl$_4$](Tl$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$)Te$_3$ Perovskites

Materials with strong spin-orbit coupling have attracted attention following the prediction and subsequent discovery of strong two- and three-dimensional topological insulators in which a topological property of the bulk band structure of an insulator results in metallic surface states with Dirac-like dispersion. Here we report the discovery of Dirac-like surface states in the perovskite superconductor [Tl$_4$]TlTe$_3$ (Tl5Te3) and its non-superconducting tin-doped derivative, [Tl4](Tl$_{0.4}$Sn$_{0.6}$)Te$_3$, as observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict a single spin-orbit driven band parity inversion at the $Z$ point above the Fermi level of Tl5Te3, suggesting the surface states are protected by Z$_2$ topology. Calculations on [Tl$_4$]SnTe$_3$ show no parity inversions, implying that a topological transition from non-trivial to trivial must occur upon doping with tin, i.e., [Tl$_4$](Tl$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$)Te$_3$. Thus [Tl$_4$]{\it M}Te$_3$ perovskites are a possible new, non-trigonal class of Z$_2$ topological compounds. Additionally, as Tl5Te3 is a stoichiometric bulk superconductor, these perovskites are ideal materials in which to study the interplay between surface states and bulk superconductivity.

Pseudogap-related charge dynamics in layered-nickelate R2-xSrxNiO4 (x sim 1)

Charge dynamics and its critical behavior are investigated near the metal-insulator transition of layered-nickelate R2-xSrxNiO4 (R=Nd, Eu). The polarized x-ray absorption spectroscopy experiment clearly shows the multi-orbital nature which enables the x2-y2-orbital-based checkerboard-type charge ordering or correlation to persist up to the critical doping region (x sim 1). In the barely metallic region proximate to the charge-ordered insulating phase, the nominal carrier density estimated from the Hall coefficient markedly decreases in accord with development of the pseudogap structure in the optical conductivity spectrum, while the effective mass is least enhanced. The present findings combined with the results of recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy show that the pseudogap in the metal-insulator critical state evolves due to the checkerboard-type charge correlation to extinguish the coherent-motion carriers in a characteristic momentum (k)-dependent manner with lowering temperature.

Giant Monopole Resonance in even-A Cd isotopes, the asymmetry term in nuclear incompressibility, and the "softness" of Sn and Cd nuclei

The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in even-A Cd isotopes has been studied by inelastic $α$-scattering at 100 MeV/u and at extremely forward angles, including 0deg. The asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility extracted from the ISGMR in Cd isotopes is found to be $K_τ = -555 \pm 75$ MeV, confirming the value previously obtained from the Sn isotopes. ISGMR strength has been computed in relativistic RPA using NL3 and FSUGold effective interactions. Both models significantly overestimate the centroids of the ISGMR strength in the Cd isotopes. Combined with other recent theoretical effort, the question of the "softness" of the open-shell nuclei in the tin region remains open still.

First study of η_c, η(1760) and X(1835) production via η'π^+π^- final states in two-photon collisions

The invariant mass spectrum of the η' π^+ π^- final state produced in two-photon collisions is obtained using a 673 fb^{-1} data sample collected in the vicinity of the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We observe a clear signal of the η_c and measure its mass and width to be M(η_c)=(2982.7 +- 1.8(stat) +- 2.2(syst) +- 0.3(model)) MeV/c^2 and Γ(η_c) = (37.8^{+5.8}_{-5.3}(stat) +- 2.8(syst) +- 1.4(model)) MeV/c^2. The third error is an uncertainty due to possible interference between the η_c and a non-resonant component. We also report the first evidence for η(1760) decay to η' π^+ π^-; we find two solutions for its parameters, depending on the inclusion or not of the X(1835), whose existence is of marginal significance in our data. From a fit to the mass spectrum using coherent X(1835) and η(1760) resonant amplitudes, we set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the product Γ_{γγ} \BR (η' π^+ π^-) for the X(1835).

Exploring the anomaly in the interaction cross section and matter radius of 23O

New measurements of the interaction cross sections of 22,23O at 900A MeV performed at the GSI, Darmstadt are reported that address the unsolved puzzle of the large cross section previously observed for 23O. The matter radii for these oxygen isotopes extracted through a Glauber model analysis are in good agreement with the new predictions of the ab initio coupled-cluster theory reported here. They are consistent with a 22O+neutron description of 23O as well.
