Macroscopic quantum tunneling in high-$T_c$ superconductors: the role of collective charge oscillations

We present a theoretical study of an escape rate for switching from the superconducting state to a resistive one in series arrays of strongly interacting Josephson junctions. At low temperatures such a switching is determined by macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) of a spatially extended Josephson phase. An increase of the crossover temperature from the thermal to quantum regimes, and a giant enhancement of MQT escape rate is obtained. Such an effect is explained by excitation of collective charge oscillations forming a {\it charge instanton}. Using a model of screened Coulomb interaction we found that our analysis is in a good accord with recently published experimental results on an enhancement of the MQT in single crystals of high-$T_c$ superconductors.

Magnetotransport in the presence of a longitudinal barrier: multiple quantum interference of edge states

Transport in a two-dimensional electron gas subject to an external magnetic field is analyzed in the presence of a \textit{longitudinal barrier.} We show that \textit{quantum interference of the edge states} bound by the longitudinal barrier results in a drastic change of the electron motion: the degenerate discrete Landau levels are transformed into an alternating sequence of energy bands and energy gaps. These features of the electron spectrum should result in a high sensitivity of thermodynamic and transport properties of the 2D electron gas to external fields. In particular, we predict giant oscillations of the ballistic conductance and discuss nonlinear current-voltage characteristics, coherent Bloch oscillations and effects of impurities

Resonant plasmon scattering by discrete breathers in Josephson junction ladders

We study the resonant scattering of plasmons (linear waves) by discrete breather excitations in Josephson junction ladders. We predict the existence of Fano resonances, and find them by computing the resonant vanishing of the transmission coefficient. We propose an experimental setup of detecting these resonances, and conduct numerical simulations which demonstrate the possibility to observe Fano resonances in the plasmon scattering by discrete breathers in Josephson junction ladders.

Multiphoton antiresonance

We show that nonlinear response of a quantum oscillator displays antiresonant dips and resonant peaks with varying frequency of the driving field. The effect is a consequence of special symmetry and is related to resonant multiphoton mixing of several pairs of oscillator states at a time. We discuss the possibility to observe the antiresonance and the associated multiphoton Rabi oscillations in Josephson junctions.

Microwave-induced flow of vortices in long Josephson junctions

We report experimental and numerical study of microwave-induced flow of vortices in long Josephson junctions at zero dc magnetic field. Our intriguing observation is that applying an ac-bias of a small frequency $f \ll f_p $ and sufficiently large amplitude changes the current-voltage characteristics ($I$-$V$ curve) of the junction in a way similar to the effect of dc magnetic field, well known as the flux-flow behavior. The characteristic voltage $V$ of this low voltage branch increases with the power $P$ of microwave radiation as $V_{s}\propto P^α$ with the index $α\simeq 0.5 $. Experiments using a low-temperature laser scanning microscope unambiguously indicate the motion of Josephson vortices driven by microwaves. Numerical simulations agree with the experimental data and show strongly {\it irregular} vortex motion. We explain our results by exploiting an analogy between the microwave-induced vortex flow in long Josephson junctions and incoherent multi-photon absorption in small Josephson junctions in the presence of large thermal fluctuations. In the case of long Josephson junctions the spatially-temporal chaos in the vortex motion mimics the thermal fluctuations. In accordance with this analogy, a control of the intensity of chaos in a long junction by changing its damping constant leads to a pronounced change in the shape of the $I$-$V$ curve. Our results provide a possible explanation to previously measured but not yet understood microwave-driven properties of intrinsic Josephson junctions in high-temperature superconductors.

Enhancement of Josephson phase diffusion by microwaves

We report an experimental and theoretical study of the phase diffusion in small Josephson junctions under microwave irradiation. A peculiar enhancement of the phase diffusion by microwaves is observed. The enhancement manifests itself by a pronounced current peak in the current-voltage characteristics. The voltage position $V_{\rm top}$ of the peak increases with the power $P$ of microwave radiation as $V_{\rm top}\propto\sqrt P$, while its current amplitude weakly decreases with $P$. As the microwave frequency increases, the peak feature evolves into Shapiro steps with finite slope. Our theoretical analysis taking into account the enhancement of incoherent superconducting current by multi-photon absorption is in good agreement with experimental data.

AC field induced quantum rectification effect in tunnel junctions

We study the appearance of directed current in tunnel junctions, quantum ratchet effect, in the presence of an external ac field f(t). The current is established in a one-dimensional discrete inhomogeneous "tight-binding model". By making use of a symmetry analysis we predict the right choice of f(t) and obtain the directed current as a difference between electron transmission coefficients in opposite directions, $ΔT = T^{LR}-T^{RL}$. Numerical simulations confirm the predictions of the symmetry analysis and moreover, show that the directed current can be drastically increased by a proper choice of frequency and amplitudes of the ac field f(t).

Quantum dissociation of a vortex-antivortex pair in a long Josephson junction

We report a theoretical analysis and experimental observation of the quantum dynamics of a single vortex-antivortex (VAV) pair confined in a long narrow annular Josephson junction. The switching of the junction from the superconducting state to the resistive state occurs via the dissociation of a pinned VAV pair. The pinning potential is controlled by external magnetic field $H$ and dc bias current $I$. We predict a specific magnetic field dependence of the oscillatory energy levels of the pinned VAV state and the crossover to a {\it macroscopic quantum tunneling} mechanism of VAV dissociation at low temperatures. Our analysis explains the experimentally observed {\it increase} of the width of the switching current distribution $P(I)$ with $H$ and the crossover to the quantum regime at the temperature of about 100 mK.

Quantum escape of the phase in a strongly driven Josephson junction

A quantum mechanical analysis of the Josephson phase escape in the presence of both dc and ac bias currents is presented. We find that the potential barrier for the escape of the phase is effectively suppressed as the resonant condition occurs, i.e. when the frequency $ω$ of the ac bias matches the Josephson junction energy level separation. This effect manifests itself by a pronounced drop in the dependence of the switching current $I_s$ on the power $W$ of the applied microwave radiation and by a peculiar double-peak structure in the switching current distribution $P(I_s)$. The developed theory is in a good accord with an experiment which we also report in this paper. The obtained features can be used to characterize certain aspects of the quantum-mechanical behavior of the Josephson phase, such as the energy level quantization, the Rabi frequency of coherent oscillations and the effect of damping.

Josephson vortex interaction mediated by cavity modes: Tunable coupling for superconducting qubits

A quantum-mechanical model for the interaction of Josephson vortices (fluxons) embedded in superconducting transmission line is presented. The vortices interact through emission and absorption of linear waves (electromagnetic cavity modes). We show that in a classical regime this peculiar type of interaction is determined by the product of instantaneous velocities of fluxons. In a quantum regime, this property provides tunable coupling between vortices which can be used for entanglement of vortex qubits. The physical mechanism of the vortex interaction is similar to that proposed for qubits based on trapped ions. Different types of transmission lines mediating the vortex interaction are proposed.

Fano resonances with discrete breathers

A theoretical study of linear wave scattering by time-periodic spatially localized excitations (discrete breathers (DB)) is presented. We obtain that the wave propagation is strongly influenced by a local coupling between an open and closed channels generated by the DB. A peculiar effect of total reflection occurs due to a Fano resonance when a localized state originating from closed channels resonates with the open channel. For the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger chain we provide with an analytical result for the frequency dependence of the transmission coefficient, including the possibility of resonant reflection. We extend the analysis to chains of weakly coupled anharmonic oscillators and discuss the relevance of the effect for electronic transport spectroscopy of mesoscopic systems.

Wave scattering by discrete breathers

We present a theoretical study of linear wave scattering in one-dimensional nonlinear lattices by intrinsic spatially localized dynamic excitations or discrete breathers. These states appear in various nonlinear systems and present a time-periodic localized scattering potential for plane waves. We consider the case of elastic one-channel scattering, when the frequencies of incoming and transmitted waves coincide, but the breather provides with additional spatially localized ac channels whose presence may lead to various interference patterns. The dependence of the transmission coefficient on the wave number q and the breather frequency Omega_b is studied for different types of breathers: acoustic and optical breathers, and rotobreathers. We identify several typical scattering setups where the internal time dependence of the breather is of crucial importance for the observed transmission properties.

Incommensurate dynamics of resonant breathers in Josephson junction ladders

We present theoretical and experimental studies of resonant localized resistive states in a Josephson junction ladder. These complex breather states are obtained by tuning the breather frequency into the upper band of linear electromagnetic oscillations of the ladder. Their prominent feature is the appearance of resonant steps in the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. We have found the resonant breather-like states displaying incommensurate dynamics. Numerical simulations show that these incommensurate resonant breathers persist for very low values of damping. Qualitatively similar incommensurate breather states are observed in experiments performed with Nb-based Josephson ladders. We explain the appearance of these states with the help of resonance-induced hysteresis features in the I-V dependence.

Quantum resonances in a single plaquette of Josephson junctions: excitations of Rabi oscillations

We present a theoretical study of a quantum regime of the resistive (whirling) state of dc driven anisotropic single plaquette containing three small Josephson junctions. The current-voltage characteristics of such a system display resonant steps that are due to the resonant interaction between the time dependent Josephson current and the excited electromagnetic oscillations (EOs). The voltage positions of the resonances are determined by the quantum interband transitions of EOs. We show that in the quantum regime as the system is driven on the resonance, coherent Rabi oscillations between the quantum levels of EOs occur. At variance with the classical regime the magnitude and the width of resonances are determined by the frequency of Rabi oscillations that in turn, depends in a peculiar manner on an externally applied magnetic field and the parameters of the system.

Broken symmetries and directed collective energy transport

We study the appearance of directed energy current in homogeneous spatially extended systems coupled to a heat bath in the presence of an external ac field E(t). The systems are described by nonlinear field equations. By making use of a symmetry analysis we predict the right choice of E(t) and obtain directed energy transport for systems with a nonzero topological charge Q. We demonstrate that the symmetry properties of motion of topological solitons (kinks and antikinks) are equivalent to the ones for the energy current. Numerical simulations confirm the predictions of the symmetry analysis and, moreover, show that the directed energy current drastically increases as the dissipation parameter $α$ reduces. Our results generalize recent rigorous theories of currents generated by broken time-space symmetries to the case of interacting many-particle systems.

Magnetic field induced control of breather dynamics in a single plaquette of Josephson junctions

We present a theoretical study of inhomogeneous dynamic (resistive) states in a single plaquette consisting of three Josephson junctions. Resonant interactions of such a breather state with electromagnetic oscillations manifest themselves by resonant current steps and voltage jumps in the current-voltage characteristics. An externally applied magnetic field leads to a variation of the relative shift between the Josephson current oscillations of two resistive junctions. By making use of the rotation wave approximation analysis and direct numerical simulations we show that this effect allows to effectively control the breather instabilities, e. g. to increase (decrease) the height of the resonant steps and to suppress the voltage jumps in the current-voltage characteristics.

Penentration of dynamic localized states in DC-driven Josephson junction ladders by discrete jumps

We give a theoretical study of unusual resistive (dynamic) localized states in anisotropic Josephson junction ladders, driven by a DC current at one edge. These states comprise nonlinearly coupled rotating Josephson phases in adjacent cells, and with increasing current they are found to expand into neighboring cells by a sequence of sudden jumps. We argue that the jumps arise from instabilities in the ladder's superconducting part, and our analytic expressions for the peculiar voltage (rotational frequency) ratios and I-V curves are in very good agreement with direct numerical simulations.

AC induced damping of a fluxon in long Josephson junction

We present a theoretical and experimental study of Josephson vortex (fluxon) moving in the presence of spatially homogeneous dc and ac bias currents. By mapping this problem to the problem of calculating the current-voltage characteristic of a small Josephson junction, we derive the dependence of the average fluxon velocity on the dc bias current. In particular we find that the low frequency ac bias current results in an additional nonlinear damping of fluxon motion. Such ac induced damping crucially depends on the intrinsic damping parameter and increases drastically as this parameter is reduced. We find a good agreement of the analysis with both the direct numerical simulations and the experimentally measured current-voltage characteristics of a long annular Josephson junction with one trapped fluxon.
