Breathers in a single plaquette of Josephson junctions: existence, stability and resonances

We present a theoretical study of inhomogeneous dynamic (resistive) states in a single plaquette consisting of three Josephson junctions. These breather states are found to exist in a large range of control parameters (dc bias, anisotropy and self inductance). We perform an analytical analysis of these states, and their stability and resonance behaviour. Numerical calculations confirm our results and show that instabilities arise due to resonant interactions between the breather and electromagnetic oscillations mediated by the breather state. These instabilities manifest themselves by various nonlinearities, resonant steps and voltage jumps in the current-voltage characteristics.

Breathers in Josephson junction ladders: resonances and electromagnetic waves spectroscopy

We present a theoretical study of the resonant interaction between dynamical localized states (discrete breathers) and linear electromagnetic excitations (EEs) in Josephson junction ladders. By making use of direct numerical simulations we find that such an interaction manifests itself by resonant steps and various sharp switchings (voltage jumps) in the current-voltage characteristics. Moreover, the power of ac oscillations away from the breather center (the breather tail) displays singularities as the externally applied dc bias decreases. All these features can be mapped to the spectrum of EEs that has been derived analytically and numerically. Using an improved analysis of the breather tail, a spectroscopy of the EEs is developed. The nature of breather instability driven by localized EEs is established.

Resonances in one and two rows of triangular Josephson junction cells

We present an experimental and analytical study of resonances in the current-voltage characteristics of single and double row triangular Josephson arrays. The magnetic field dependences of the voltage positions of the resonances have been measured for various cell inductances and junction critical currents. In double row arrays, we have observed a peculiar resonance, whose voltage position decreases with magnetic field. We derive the spectrum of linear electromagnetic waves propagating in the arrays. In the double row array, the spectrum consists of many branches that differ by the behavior of the Josephson junctions transverse to the bias current direction. The measured magnetic field dependence of the resonance voltages is mapped to the linear mode spectrum and good agreement between experiments and model is found.

Symmetry broken motion of a periodically driven Brownian particle: nonadiabatic regime

We report a theoretical study of an overdamped Brownian particle dynamics in the presence of both a spatially modulated one-dimensional periodic potential and a periodic alternating force (AF). As the periodic potential has a low symmetry (a ratchet potential) the Brownian particle displays a broken symmetry motion with a nonzero time average velocity. By making use of the Green function method and a mapping to the theory of Brillouin bands the probability distribution of the particle coordinate is derived and the nonlinear dependence of the macroscopic velocity on the frequency and the amplitude of AF is found. In particular, our theory allows to go beyond the adiabatic limit and to explain the peculiar reversal of the velocity sign found previously in the numerical analysis.

Experimental Critical Current Patterns in Josephson Junction Ladders

We present an experimental and theoretical study of the magnetic field dependence of the critical current of Josephson junction ladders. At variance with the well-known case of a one-dimensional (1D) parallel array of Josephson junctions the magnetic field patterns display a single minimum even for very low values of the self-inductance parameter $β_{\rm L}$. Experiments performed changing both the geometrical value of the inductance and the critical current of the junctions show a good agreement with numerical simulations. We argue that the observed magnetic field patterns are due to a peculiar mapping between the isotropic Josephson ladder and the 1D parallel array with the self-inductance parameter $β_{\rm L}^{\rm eff}=β_{\rm L}+2$.

Broken symmetry of row switching in 2D Josephson junction arrays

We present an experimental and theoretical study of row switching in two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays. We have observed novel dynamic states with peculiar percolative patterns of the voltage drop inside the arrays. These states were directly visualized using laser scanning microscopy and manifested by fine branching in the current-voltage characteristics of the arrays. Numerical simulations show that such percolative patterns have an intrinsic origin and occur independently of positional disorder. We argue that the appearance of these dynamic states is due to the presence of various metastable superconducting states in arrays.

Annular Long Josephson Junctions in a Magnetic Field: Engineering and Probing the Fluxon Interaction Potential

The interaction of a Josephson fluxon with an external magnetic field-induced potential in a long Josephson junction is investigated experimentally. The thermal activation of the fluxon from a potential well is observed and experiments probing its predicted quantum properties are discussed. A method for engineering a magnetic double-well potential for a fluxon is proposed and the use of the coupled fluxon states for quantum computation is suggested.
